    The $700 wheels aren't *really* intended as a product to be purchased. Don't get me wrong - they sell them and you CAN purchase them, but the wheels exist to psychologically manipulate buyers of a Mac Pro. The default configuration includes the wheels. You can then choose to remove them and "save" $700, so you become convinced that you've gotten a spectacular deal. It's a tactic as old as retail itself.

    "they are huge, they're ugly, and they're awful"..... UK plug's/socket's are simply the best:
    Safer with strong chunky prongs that are shielded where they'd become live, ground on top because gravity, on/off switch to isolate supply and arcing/sparking, fused which is never a bad thing although not required in the US. And they supply higher wattage at the socket.
    The badly placed socket shown was a poor example to make a point, I'm sure the same could happen anywhere. We do suffer with more bulk, true, and sadly many just stick a UK plug onto their power adapters and call it a day or do it for aesthetic like Apple rather than designing it for the market. But if you want a safe, robust, capable plug/socket to deal with deadly electricity then nothing beats it.

    Funny story here: I actually just bought a usb SuperDrive yesterday brand new from the Apple Store. I have a 16” 2021 MacBook Pro and needed a dvd player for some old media I have, and while reading/playing back a dvd works perfectly fine, I got a very similar error when trying to burn a disc. The stupid thing is that on Apple’s website it explicitly says (at the time of writing this) it is compatible with any Mac made since 2008 as long as you have a USB-C to USB-A adapter, including for burning discs, and mentions nothing about compatibility problems on modern Macs. They REALLY need to either change that or just discontinue it altogether.

    Without those you would need to rely on circuit breakers to detect shorts which rarely happens before something actually catches fire.
    I'm not from UK, but their plugs ARE better. Imagine a power strip can handle at max 2kW before catching fire. The embedded fuse would prevent it from burning, but a 15A circuit breaker, which is 3.4kW would not.

    That 30 pin still serves a purpose! I still use my old iPod (updated with an SD card) when I want distraction free music. It is very refreshing not having to use a distraction filled phone all the time.

  • @axonn101
    @axonn101 Před měsícem +6

    Something I really appreciate about Apple is that they sell some of this old stuff still. As someone who collects iPods from time to time being able to just go out and buy a first party genuine Apple 30-pin cable is wonderful.
    Also while EarPods don’t sound as good as some other earbuds at their price point I will argue that they are quite practical. They don’t insert into your ear canal so if you are a person who has difficulty with in-ear buds you’re good. This also means you can easily put them in and take them out of your ears if you are in an environment that requires you to do so often. They don’t bleed sound in any way close to the version of the Apple earbuds they replaced. They also still sound pretty good for what they are. For phone calls, podcasts, audiobooks, and non-critical listening they sound pretty good. Especially for phone calls that microphone is absolutely superior to any wireless alternative.

      @a1white Před měsícem

      Really odd how he was critiquing them by showing how damn good the Mic quality is (mainly because the are not Bluetooth) and how they sound decent (that coming from a self professed audiophile) but then said Apple shouldn't be selling them becuase you can get cheap Chinese ones instead (that are bluetooth anyway, so the Mic won't be as good).

  • @DoctorX17

    I loved the 30 pin for the era -- one of my favorite older connectors probably. I'd bet it's still sold because some folks still use really old iPods/iPads! Especially iPods; I have an iPod Classic I still use for music because it just works, and feels silly to replace it since I don't have to worry about things like security vs. a phone or iPad.

    That MagSafe adapter saved my bacon. I grabbed an old MacBook Air from goodwill a few months back, but only had MagSafe 1 adapters, no MagSafe 2. I was so suppressed when I found out I could just hop over to my local Apple Store and buy it for a reasonable $10. The clerk didn't even know what it was when they gave it to me, which I thought was funny 🤣

      Definitely, it also saved my sister from having to buy a second power brick for her 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, as I just happened to have both an 85W and 65W MagSafe 1 chargers for my two MacBook Pros.

    Snazzy, honestly, you truly make THE best Apple/tech videos on the web. I simply just love your production style and format. The topics are interesting, the script is always polished, the cuts/edits and visuals are always clean and professional. I especially love that you get into the nitty gritty details about the hardware & specs, the software, and use cases of whatever you’re discussing, and I really enjoy when you include a historic perspective as well by sharing your knowledge of the past - you’re so well informed. This video, like the rest of your content, showcases all of these elements. Always a subscriber, notifications on :)! Keep it up!!

  • @d3xbot

    I do like that you can add the extension cord to the international-style dual usb-c adapter. I remember when I was a student, I had 2 extension cables: one for my backpack and one that stayed in my room. I'd just swap my brick between the two cables and didn't have to unplug/unwire my desk setup. I'm not planning on replacing my desktop multi-device charger any time soon, but if I replaced it with Apple's dual usb-c one, I'd use my spare extension cable to make it reach.
    though I'm a lot more likely to use something like a UGREEN 65W USB C Charging Station

    The earpods with the 3.5mm jack are still very popular in some countries. I know a lot of folks that keep buying them for use with their laptop. I think long-time Apple fans have gotten used to the sound profile on Apple buds and want to keep using something they know, rather than trying another pair that they don't know.
    Others keep a pair around to have a wired option/ headphones that don't need to charge. In South Africa, we have loadshedding. That basically means that the power goes off for between 2 to 4 hours, sometimes 2 times a day. If you forgot to charge your AirPods, Galaxy Buds, etc, a wired backup is useful.

When I need them once or twice a month they are always ready, I just take the out from my backpack sidepocket, no need to worry about charge like the wireless ones. These being wired they just work and for as long as I need them, they never run out of "charge".

    28:24 here's a little tip: if you want to preserve your battery while your macbook is used plugged in (as constantly charging from 98-100% and keeping the battery at 100% degrades it rapidly), you can put something on the central pin and it won't charge.
    My 2013 macbook air still has a battery health of 95% this way with about 500 cylces in total.

    So funny enough, I was a major user of USB on iPad going back to the iPad 4 which I had in school. At my family house, we had suck terrible wifi that everything had to be wired by ethernet for decent use. This included my iPad. I used a iPad 4, with the USB 2.0 connector to a powered USB hub, to a USB-to-Ethernet adapter for years. I continued to use this setup into my iPad Air 2 when my 4 got too slow, and then a major upgrade to 3.0 with my original iPad Pro 12.9 inch. iPads were necessary at my highschool and I kept using my iPad as my daily driver for notes, zoom/teams meetings, and much more through University. I only stopped using most of those when I got the first gen 2018 USB-C iPad pro 12.9in which I still rock today.
    My first job in highschool and into college was working IT for schools and we managed fleets of iPads and the USB connection was so useful for so many things. It's crazy to me to look back at how limited iOS for the ipad used to be and yet we got as much as we could out of those machines.
