I am a GIS Coordinator on the county level. I send updates to Google for new roads and addresses. Tesla's have not been on every road in the country as of yet and obviously have not been to every address in the country. This would be an add on to Google's GIS data, it could replace street view and improve which lanes to be in but keeping updated data on new constructions and new roads is not something that Tesla has shown to me the mechanisms to take on right now. Selling the camera footage to Google is the better way to go here. This is a wholly different industry than just driving around and collecting data.

You're right. I live in Georgia, and when I'm driving on the I-85 freeway, the speed limit suddenly shows as 40 mph on the Tesla screen. The car either slows down or ignores the speed limit and keeps driving. This is a real problem and needs to be fixed quickly. The speed limit is 70 mph, so why does it suddenly show 40 mph out of nowhere? This is an issue.

My model y is AWFUL at updating speed signs. On a recent trip the speed limit changed from 55 mph to 65 mph. I counted at least eight speed signs over the next ten miles or so and the Model Y never picked up on the speed limit change. This has been a recurring problem for me for the past year. I scheduled a session at the local Service Center to debug and check camera calibration. The Service Center canceled my appointment and said this was a known problem that would be addressed in a future update. On road trips I use Waze (owned by Google) in conjunction with the Tesla Navigation. Waze nails the speed limit changes every time and is far more dependable than the Tesla seeing and updating the speed limits.

I think you're overestimating the geographical Tesla coverage. There are still many places that have never seen a Tesla.
To replace Google Maps, it has to have a coverage close to 100% so that navigation works from any point to anywhere.
That is almost impossible without satellite data.

How detailed is the information surrounding the roads? Do they get house or apartment numbers? Do they get business names? What about up to date information on road conditions, construction or even traffic? Can they use this data to create a digital twin of the areas they get camera coverage on and what could be done with that data? Privacy issues could abound but there could be a lot of potential advantages to it too. Imagine being able to feed a town manager or highway maintenance organization real time data on pot holes or obstructions.

Their map story is more complicated than google maps. There where main roads here Tesla would not navigate through for a long time (old streets, hundreds of years old, now main roads for ages too). Google showed them, every map I looked at had no issue navigating them. It took Tesla years to fix that.
But in general they can of course take OSM and basically update them themselves (kind of, some markers to put into the NN could be enough initially)

Then there is still the problem of temporary roadworks, where road crews do not adequately display de-restriction signs. Also, whilst massive data input from heat maps must be very helpful, there will always be “the road less travelled” to account for, not to mention older road markings that deteriorate over time. We are currently driving around Australia (15,000+ km). Here, FSD is not legal, but we indulged in EAP, when updating to a Model 3 Highland for this trip. It is quirky, especially in detecting occasional phantom speed signs and persisting with restrictions that don’t exist.

  • @darwinboor1300
    @darwinboor1300 Před 16 dny

John, Nice pod cast. Yes one potential fix for FSD would be to merge the current navigation system with near real time whole world geomapping. Even in the US the process of generating and maintaining those maps has been limited by at least two main factors.
The first factor has been compute. Generating a real world geomap is compute and storage intensive. Until recently, Tesla has been compute restrained. Maintaining such map adds layers of complexity to the necessary compute.
The second factor involves the logistics necessary build the whole world geomap and more importantly to maintain the map in near real time. Just like there are still supercharger deserts in the US there are similar Tesla deserts in most cities (including cities like San Fracisco where in many downtown locations it is hard to go a block without seeing a Tesla). Here in Greenville there are still many neighborhoods without a Tesla. Some of those neighborhoods rarely (if ever) see a Tesla. I suspect there may still be a few neighborhood streets in Greenville that have never seen a Tesla. If you map out all the Tesla drives in any city you will see a map that looks like a nighttime fireworks display with many lines leading to and from high freqency locations, a scattering of random lines across the background, and numerous regions of darkness within the city boundaries. Thus, acquiring a wholeworld geomap will require a large fleet of Teslas to drive EVERY navigatable roadway to acquire the map. Unfortunately it would also require a prohibitally large fleet to maintain the whole world geomap in real time. This is true even if the fleet of existing personally owned Tesla is used to build out and maintain the geomap of commonly traveled routes.
That said, fleet built and maintained geomapping could be very useful for improving FSD performance of innercity robotaxis.

Fix old low-speed zones through (long lasting) construction zones. The wrong speed lasts for _years_ after construction is finished before it's changed in the maps. There is so much phantom braking due to this.

All the data you are referring to is open source - Open Street Maps is a good alternative or redundant source for Google Maps. It would be an unnecessary distraction for Tesla to create it's own street map system

I believe Tesla is already doing this and this is why we have such bad map data. I have found every time the Tesla maps incorrectly if I use Google maps on an Android if it works perfectly. Tesla may have started with a base Google map but they've been adding and annotating their own features which is where we get the problems. In all these comments, it would be more clear if people would say Tesla navigation. Which is not the same as Google navigation on Android.

Bing indicates that Google is estimated to make between 4.3 and 11.1b per year from Google maps. If tesla can make a superior product they could take at least a part of that pot. Of course they could sell the information to other parties but they could also do something like incorporate maps into their app and/or have a tesla maps app that would be useful to everyone, not just tesla owners but could open a lot of opportunities. They could of course make an Android auto app and what ever the apple equivalent to that is as well.

Maps has a bug where it will announce your next turn is left or right but when you get to the turn it is the opposite.
I think it's determining the direction of the turn based on the cars orientation at the time it pre announces the turn but I'm not positive that's why it's making the mistake.

This is a really attractive idea, but creating maps would require a different set of objectives for the inference NN (i.e.: location & classification of signs etc.). This will be a challenge to fit on V3 hardware which seems to be near its max capacity right now. Once Tesla has a strong level 4/5 FSD, they may be able to optimize enough to allow useful map data to emerge.

Tesla will do this out of necessity in order for FSD to work properly in the face of road changes. Case in point: a local road was changed from a 2-way stop to a roundabout and FSD was unable to correctly and safely navigate the intersection for many weeks, until the Google Maps data was updated.

  • @felix9x

I find actual Google Map on my phone to be more accurate then Tesla map. Sometimes Tesla has send me wrong way or there was a glitch in map. The problem is that Tesla can't update their car data in realtime with fresh Google data while Google has perfected the phone app and is always streaming the most realtime data to the phone.
Replacing google by your own thing is attractive on paper but then you realize the thousand things Google actually does to keep their map data up date date and accurate and you realize this is not cheap or easy. It is possible as a strategic shift as Apple did but for Tesla they already well integrated with Google and i think this is not a necessary effort.

Great topic/suggestion. I had to stop using Google maps for our app a few years ago when Google increased their license fees obnoxiously.
I assume you know why Google bought Waze - otherwise asked as; I assume you know how Waze built their own map when Google made their license fees too high for Waze. (If not look it up.)
Absolutely, Tesla must do exactly what you describe. I’m sure their contract with Google prevents them from doing this. I hope that ends soon and Tesla licenses their map to all those being ripped off by Google today - and to Google who would pay for this data as you said.

Don't wrap your CyberTruck or you will lose the real reason for getting a stainless steel truck. To be able to park it anywhere, next to anyone and know they cannot door ding you is amazing. If you are worried about the silly fingerprint thing, just run it through the big brush car wash. Can't get paint swirls if you do not have paint. Also, the fingerprints disappear if you leave it in the sunlight for a while.
