    Thanks for the video, guys! When I come back to Uruguay I found the electric bill to be crazy expensive, mainly when the country has more than 83% renewable energy that gets exported in almost its entirety. But I guess that is the price to pay for safety and even more freedom than the US. With USD $1500 to $2000/ month you can live comfortably in my opinion.

    • @MaddieAle
      @MaddieAle  Před 3 lety +1

      yes I agree. and the country is very interesting regarding recycling and renewable energy! I'd love to see some improvements soon, and there is talk of making some changes! But yes, for around $2000 you could do most things if you live somewhere small or further out of the city! Our apartment is SUPER cheap for our location, more rental prices and walk through videos coming VERY soon, but keep in mind most rentals will be over $400 USD which is what we pay, but also our place is a comfortable home for 1 person, not a couple with pets! hence the moving soon xx

    I'm from Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil's southest province) and I've been thinking quite a lot about moving to Montevideo and watching your videos is helping me a lot making a reasonable and not just emotional decision.
    What is surprising me the most is that Rio Grande and Uruguay are, when it comes to culture, lifestyle and history... the same thing!? O.o With the difference that Uruguay is safe, cares about education, isn't poor (generally speaking) and isn't overpopulated.
    I guess I just managed to be born at the wrong side of the frontier 🤣

    • @MaddieAle
      @MaddieAle  Před 3 lety +3

      yes there are a lot of differences! I've never been to brazil (maddie) so i might have Ale share his opinion too as he has travelled more, but at least from what you see in media, Brazil is, yes, a LOT busier! A lot more crowded, less safe, but also... a lot more vibrant! I love Uruguay but its definitely more of an "older people" latin country haha. Although to be fair, clubs have been closed almost the whole time I've been here so I'm really looking forward to when parties and clubs are open and I can get the full south american experience!

    Well, I live here in Montevideo with a much much lower budget than that, but I do have many "saving" (?) Habits. That is, I try to spend as little as possible. I don't pay rent but even if I did, my budget would be a bit below 1000 USD. I'm saying this mainly for someone who might really want to come to Uruguay and is concerned about making ends meet with a low salary. It's doable. Not the most comfortable but doable. To give you some examples, I mostly cook all my meals, I buy all my vegetables at the street market on Sundays, I don't take buses (mainly because of covid) so I walk a lot and that's my way of doing at least some exercise, I don't use any kind of heating or a.c (temperatures here aren't that extreme that you can't fix it with clothes or curtains), and a couple of other things here and there. Basically, when there's a will, there's a way.

      We can look into it! I just made a video on renting here, because thats what we are doing. The housing market is obviously wildly cheaper than in the US but as far as getting all set up it can be tricky! Start by searching on ArquiBrokers and Mercado Libre, they provide listings for both Rent (alquiler) and buy (vender) properties all over uruguay! the video I made the other day will have more information that is useful, and while i was specifically talking about renting, a lot will also apply to purchasing a house! good luck!

    • @allison2848
      @allison2848 Před 2 lety

      @@MaddieAle hi there! Thanks for replying to me. Since commenting I have learned that financing a home isn't a possibility there, in our situation. They require you to have all of the money up front, so you have to have quite a substantial savings in order to first give a 10-15% deposit to the seller, which you are at risk of losing should you not be able to close. Then after the Notary has made sure everything looks good to transfer ownership immediately, which takes about 6-9 weeks, you pay the seller the remainder of the purchase price after signing all the documents, and get the keys to your new home. So for a family wishing to buy and move there, but requiring financing to do so, it is not possible.

    Because it’s a safety issue so if you are coming from the states you will have to ge a transformer to reduce the electric to your hair blower or what ever electrical things you have. Just to put that out there living in the 🇺🇸 USA it is more expensive here we’re I live Naples Florida USA but I would think 🤔 that if you and your

    If you are doing these great videos for foreigners, it would be more helpful if you get used to saying going to "centro" instead of going to "the city". Montevideo is the city, Pocitos, for example, is a "barrio", like dozens of others. I am Uruguayan (in Canada), but if I was a foreign I would think that from where you live and "the city" there could be farmland or isolated places.
    Once I rented a place on Bulevar España, between Bulevard Artigas y la Rambla. To go to centro I used to walk several blocks and already be there. I love walking. I have walked Rambla to Centro many times. Keep up the good work!

    • @MaddieAle
      @MaddieAle  Před 2 lety +1

      While I understand your point, many foreigners will probably think the same as me, that Ciudad Vieja (which for the record I do say in most videos, especially the vlogs) is the CITY CITY, most countries would not consider an area the size of montevideo to be the "city", But I also understand that to Uruguayans, the whole of Montevideo is the city... I guess just because it's not the interior haha, so I try to be specific so as not to offend people.
      I am considering making a whole video about terminology though, for example "the interior" because I know it was confusing for me at first! So if you have any other suggestions of things you think people should know about I would love to hear.

    • @sutash9043
      @sutash9043 Před 2 lety +3

      I have relatives and friends in Chile, and I'd say it has its pros and cons. The pro would be that it's a much bigger country than Uruguay in terms of population and infrastructure, and it has some of the most beautiful landscapes ever. The cons though, do tip the balance for me to prefer Uruguay.
      Let's start by the least subjective points:
      1) The health system. Everything is crazy expensive there. A simple check up costs you money and not little. Let alone an important surgery, for which you might end up in serious debt. (to give you a real example, my aunt needed knee surgery a few years ago and she payed about 7000 USD for only one knee. She couldn't possibly afford having surgery for both.) Veterinarians also charge astronomical sums of money for every single thing. A simple consultation might cost you no less than 50 USD, (in a cheap clinic)
      2) The educational system: There's no such thing as public education after primary school (or there might be but it's really bad) and it costs a fortune too.
      Here come the subjective points:
      3) Society. I find Chileans (not every one, though, and maybe I'm mainly talking about Santiaguinos, people from the capital) too indifferent. Like they take things too lightly. Also, they don't commit. They'll agree to meet you, or help with something (even offer to do so) and then never do it (and don't even let you know they won't). They simply don't honour commitments. And the most serious shortcoming of Chilean society: discrimination. They discriminate each other in terms of social class, what school they went to, where they live, what family they come from, etc, and I'd say there's also quite a lot of discrimination for foreigners
      So even though I toyed with the idea of leaving Uruguay for Chile, I discarded the idea mainly for the first two reasons, because you can always find exceptions for the third point, and I'm quite a loner so, it doesn't affect me much (and besides I have my Uruguayan aunt and cousins

    If you walked the dog you wouldn't need a gym membership 😆 how much are cigarettes Winston or Marlboro? Old us veteran was going to Philippines but heard I didn't have to worry about resident visas etc. Btw can I get the stuff I need for stir frys like green beans ramen ginger chicken etc there ?

      If you want to have better cardiovascular fitness I'd suggest quitting smoking. And sorry but I don't know the prices of cigarettes because I don't smoke, and walking the dog and going to the gym are two very different exercises, I lift weights, not just walk on the treadmill. P.s. as we mentioned in the video, our dog walker is to socialise our dog more to hopefully let him settle down as he was a rescue dog with little contact with humans OR dogs before we adopted him, not because we are too lazy to walk him ourselves. Hope that answers your questions.

      p.s. I've also been to the Philippines and while it's lovely, I don't know how I would adjust to living there full time! Maybe once pandemic has settled both options will seem a whole lot better.

      there is simply a lot to cover, and if is just said "we spend __ on rent, ___ on food and ___ on bills" while you might get a 5 minute video, it doesn't actually allow you to realise if it will apply to your own situation! But thankyou for the feedback, in future we can try to make more direct videos with a little less chatter.
