Literally everything you said is spot on. I'm from Montevideo but I've been living in New York for years and every time I go back home I cannot believe how expensive Uruguay is like omgggg. Wonderful country but only if you can afford it
Well, don't forget we had 15 years of Socialism who rose taxes really high to support their huge system and part of that money was for people who didn't work or didn't like to work (plus all the bad business they made... debts paid by people through taxation...) and we can't forget the multiplied by 4 the external debt... And even though there was a change in government, we got hit by the pandemic right away... which has not been cheap at all! Supporting a lot of people who got laid off, plus vaccines, medical expenses, etc. etc. etc.
no one is denying all of this! But it doesn't change the fact that Uruguay is an expensive country compared to its neighbours. Again, this is all justified by the higher quality of life here, but the fact is not everyone can afford to live here they way they would want to!
How do uruguay locals afford it? Most of them do not make that much?
@@botubeful by cutting down expenses. Uruguayans are really good at recycling and reusing stuff like furniture, cars, kitchen appliances etc, they make everything last longer. And whenever something breaks down instead of throwing it away they find a way to repair it.
@@santisilver10 - That seems to be a global trend lately with rising prices. People everywhere are
becoming more frugal and resourceful out of necessity.
I was born in the netherlands but my dad is from uruguay. I always felt closer to my uruguayan side to be honest. Having said all that, bienvenido en mi pais 🇺🇾💙
where are you living now? I'd love to at least visit the netherlands, such an interesting place!
@@MaddieAle i live in the best city named Amsterdam. Truly an amzing place you should visit

netherlands SUX BIG TIME, its the total opposite of arg uru bra countries. weather is total shit, for the rest full of Maroccon turkish nationalists total nothing with europe. and fucking expensive! 17.8m people squashed in a tiny wetland. I hope to move to uruguay or argentina soon. netherlands wont survive next 10y cuz of the SEA LEVEL Rising. the government is LYING THat it can survive next 80years. same as they are lying this country has an strong economy: 80% or more is German economy. but really sucks big time, some people waiting 10y or more for an appartment. and society is totally shit... no sunshine MEAT IS EXPENSIVE! I heard meat is very very cheap and TOP quality in uruguay. working on a ranch is like a dream come true...
Bienvenido a mi país, no “en”.
Enjoying your videos! Thanks for sharing your insights. The good, the not so good, and the subjective. Much appreciated!
My pleasure!
I'm an Uruguayan and I'm currently living in California. Despite is super convenient to order everything in Amazon, I simply miss going shopping in the center of Montevideo or in Tristan Narvaja on Sundays. I miss going for shopping. Amazon is convenient but it makes life much more boring too.
Thanks for the information. As a person who has lived and worked in South Korea for 30 years, and who desires a less hectic retirement destination, your information was quite helpful.
I'm glad it was helpful! If you have any other questions please ask! :)
Hi. I live in Uruguay too. I've been here almost three years. I agree with your points. I came here for a job so perhaps some of my attitudes are different, and I have to bear in mind that I moved here from Los Angeles. I think that the issues around shopping are actually the more minor ones, at least for me. My issues are more around social acceptance. Uruguayans are very tolerant in many ways, but very rigid in others and it's a hard society to break into, even if you speak Spanish. People here tend to always say "well, we're a small country" which is a relevant reason for some matters but not so much for others. A former student of mine once said that Uruguay is a very liberal but conformist society. In many ways I think that hits the nail on the head.
Couldn't agree more. I think people are very set in there ways and I never want to come across as trying to come in and "change things" but it really is noticeable the longer you're here. the excuse we hear most is "its a pandemic" which we understand... but that also doesn't mean that the government offices cannot answer their phones? I think at it's core its a wonderful country but there are many surface level things that could be improved, and while the people all generally mean well, its just a VERY different culture than I'm used to and has been an interesting adjustment.
@@MaddieAle The themes I keep coming back to are around lifestyle, dress and expression. Oh, and food.
As an Uruguayan, I agree
Uruguayan born and raised. I have been reflecting on this after I moved to California last year. Uruguayans we can love migrants but as long as they remotely behave like us. And is not about the language. I think is because largely we haven't had a big migration since the 40' and we simply didn't grow up with a diverse environment.
@@Lic51I really like your comment because it helps me & others understand it. It reminds me of areas away from the coast, and bigger cities in my country. And whenever big city move to these areas, we know it's different territory. Like the culture, expectations, how people make relationships, etc 😊I haven't visited Uruguay yet, but would like to for a couple months. 😊 Especially seeing that it's safe for women, lgbt, just wonderful!
Thanks for the video. As a retiree, I think I would like it. I really appreciate you giving us this information.
Glad it was helpful! if you have more questions please ask
Thanks for the info as always.
Any time!
Great videos. Please keep coming.
Thanks, will do!
Hi Maddie. I'm new to your channel. Do you have videos discussing the life of retired people from the US? Also about the Free Trade Zone? How do you get around the import duties? If it's shipped as Used with low value?
Truer words were never spoken. I do so much miss my beloved Uruguay, warts and all.
well i'm happy to show you a little window into life here now. Don't forget to ask any requests you have for videos!
What do you mean warts?
@@lupitacajero7185 I see that I need to avoid the appearance of any displeasure or anything that questions the integrity or culture in Uruguay. It seems too easy to offend some people even when there is no such attempt. I will have to explain everything I say and apologize for having views that don't coincide with those of everyone within earshot.
I love how politely you speak about my country, which now it's YOURS too
Uruguay noma 🇺🇾🇺🇾
I've learnt to be careful how i say things! I do love Uruguay, despite its flaws, so I never want someone to miss-interpret me and believe that I dislike the country!
What a nice comment!
If I own a house , what will be the monthly expenses for 5 family members .. 2 adults and 3 children
I think that Uruguay 🇺🇾 might work for me during retirement, but I’d have to drastically change my expectations. Never been there and I really should try it. 😄
I hear time goes by very slow there... love it... have to go and visit it
i mean... i guess it depends on your perspective! the bureaucracy moves slowly, but i don't know that time changes at all haha especially since time is all fake anyway.
Thank you very much for information I have a question about Canadian citizen how long take for PR one month or two months
honestly I don't know! We have met a few Canadians while here actually... and both times they were disappointed in the wait times and communication. It's just a very different system here and can be frustrating to adjust! (both Canadians had married a local and were getting a partner visa essentially, and even that was a hassle!) BUT some people say it's an easy process so it's hard to know what to believe!
Its been 8 years since I was in Montevideo, they need a département store there, I didnt find the clothing stores to be that great, and they could use mre better resturants in the capital
Please can you make a vlog of hospital visits in Uruguay? I just want to get an idea of what the experience could be like?
Most medical centres or government buildings don't allow you to use your phones which is really strange to me! But I do plan to make a video about the healthcare system here, i just want to find someone who WORKS in healthcare to answer some questions and get a better understanding!
@@MaddieAle Please do make the video!
Si haces la declaración de aduanas con el contenido no te cobran. Cual son las curiosidades de Uruguay según tú?
Thank you for the information. I am from America and I am thinking about visiting Montevideo. Any tips for an English speaking person like you and I? Are there a lot of translators down there? Do people speak English down there fluently?
Uruguay is in America. That's the first piece of advise for you 😂
Most people are not fluent in English. Unless you are in a circle of people who do speak it. Generally speaking, most of the population is not fluent.
Most middle and upper middle class millennials and centennials are fluent because English instruction is complulsory in Uruguayan schools, and private schools use to encourage children to take standard English tests such as FCE, CAE, PCE, etc.
I like this video keep going 🤠 greeting from Morocco
Thank you for the video. My wife and I are considering retiring there in 5 years. We will be early 50's. As we do more research would you mind if I ask you a few questions?
Sure please ask away! (this is from Maddie's spanish channel I'm just on here going through the comments) but please ask more questions I use them for future video ideas and i try to reply to most comments!
@@maddiemalann I would like a video on safe neighborhoods for solo women and how much for 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in safe neighborhoods in Montevideo, please.
HI! our apartment hunt video might be helpful! we were looking for exactly that. We live in Pocitos nuevo, and previously lived in Pocitos (one suburb over) and this is a very safe and central area.
Other good options are punta carretas and Carasco... but these areas area all on the more expensive side!

Is there any plan for Amazon to be available in Uruguay in the future? They have been expanding all over the world, even Argentina.
honestly i don't know! a lot of people here are very against it, but young people would like the options it brings!
I hope not. Amazon is a predatory company
Short answer: yes
Curious I earn $1600 U.S a month retired and my girlfriend earns money from her job which she can still do in Uruguay even though she’s in Brazil we want to move to Uruguay and rent a small apartment outside the city any advice ?
I'm planning to retire there next year, how to receive social security from USA, any bank that you recommend??
Banco republica uruguay BROU
thanks Gerardo! I'm not from the US so everything there works a little different!
We do have an account with Banco Republica, its the most old school and secure i believe. There is a different process entirely for people from the US to open accounts though, because the tellers asked me when i went to sign up if i was from the US to check, but because I'm austalian we got a different form!
I think because uruguay is kinda... the swiss bank of the south americas... at least in the past! they are quite strict on some things but I'm sure plenty of US citizens retire here and manage just fine!
Do you guys live in a house, or a condo, or apartment? If I were to move out of the US, I want a house.
We are renting an Apartment. Of course you can get houses, but within the city, many older houses are being torn down for apartment buildings. I will say compared to the US, prices here are obviously better, and if you're willing to live further out from the city you can find some amazing houses for very cheap!
Hi could you please tell me how indians move from Uruguay to us with work visa
I'm sorry but we do not know specifics! We only know our own situation and I am not sure how to get a work visa here.
if you want chain stores just catch the ferry over to Buenos Aries on occasion..
yes of course usually this is an option, but for me at the time i was unable to leave the country even for buenos aires! But yes now there is that option,
Great video as usual.
One suggestion, please invest in a good mic. The room acoustics are awful.
You want to donate some money so we can buy one? All the half decent microphones here are over $8000 pesos (around $200USD -$600)
@@MaddieAle I'll see what I can do.

Hey. I’m Sri Lanka. Can I travel Uruguay?
I don't know about your countries restrictions, but Uruguay is open to tourists now! So probably :)
Sorry, but it was difficult to follow because there an echo “like” and had to cut. Perhaps you need to adjust the sound.
Lapel mic, like $50
Can you help me
Vague statements about " it's expensive, you need a good income" etc are not helpful. You need to be objective. For example, the minimum income needed for a retiree to get a permanent visa in Ecuador is US $1275 per month, per single person, because it is estimated this is what you need to live comfortably. So how much minimum would a single retiree need??? in dollars please.
Hii Uruguay is developed country Or developing
... Developing? But honestly the city is very developed, but the further out you go, the less developed. Like most countries.
I wouldn't say its first world but i also don't feel comfortable calling it 3rd world (although some locals do!)
A South American in Europe or the US is an immigrant, an European or a US person in Latin America is an expat. Hmmmm.
honestly I know i'm very privileged and never had to think much about this... i don't know I would call myself both? I immigrated... but I am also an expat?
Moving to Argentina.
I think you should be very specific with regards to people finding job's in UY. If you are over 35 years old you will have a hard time finding a job in UY
Good afternoon, yes it is true here import taxes are very high. It's practically 60% of the value of the item....... crazy. In addition, you have to pay the shipping cost.
* Someone who is in the USA does not pay anything, nor do they deliver to their home address. But it is as you say, those who earn in dollars live very well. greetings
I'm australian but yes the import taxes can be a lot! We just don't really import things anymore but i know other people do.
I'm a younger person and don't like Amazon or target . we aren't all shallow
It's not about being shallow... But if I struck a nerve you'll probably love it here. Honestly I don't enjoy amazon either, its BIG business and destroying the environment, but I will say that living here, there WILL be things that you want to buy that you just simply CANNOT find in the stores. Those are the moments when big department stores or amazon, would be helpful. Do i think it could be damaging to other uruguayan businesses, yea, I'm just saying, its easy to judge from the outside but when you move here, i bet there will be something, at least one thing, that you do miss, and then you will understand.
@@MaddieAleSorry i didn't see this till now. You're awesome to take the time to respond like this. .
Can you tell me , I hear a lot of people say you have to be conformist in Uruguay , do you have any idea what the mean ? Conformist to what ?
I live in the US and I hate big stores and malls, nowadays you can even get shot in those places, I would love to live in a place with mama and papa, small businesses type, go to a real bakery, a small boutique, etc.
I can't think of an item, living in a country like Uruguay, that would demand to be bought on Amazon or Walmart "only", I really can't think of one.
Maybe that "necessity" is created by living in places like the USA...
It is hard to understand you because of the sound or microphone; volume goes up and down.
Hi Lupita, yes I know and I'm sorry! We now have a professional microphone so it should be better in the future! BUT i always try to add subtitles so you can watch with captions if needed :)
When you have money, you can live almost anywhere in the world !!
Unfortunately
What about taxes, Sales tax? VAT?
Vat is 22%
I wonder what type of life I could have in Uruguay on $1,700 per month. 🤔
pretty good tbh
If you are buying "of the rack" things might be difficult. Find a tailor.
easier said than done! I actually make clothes myself so i can do basic things, but I can't make shoes or jackets or suit pants! I mean i could learn but i have never done it before.
What language is she speaking? Uraguian ?
spanish
Español. In Uruguay they speak Spanish, it's a little different than in Spain, the accent especially but also some of the sentence structures. If you're familiar with Argentinian accents, Uruguay is very similar to that but slightly different. And VERY different from Spain or Mexico or anything you're probably familiar with from media.
i live in uruguay i was born in uruguay
ok...gracias.
Hello. Do you mind we exchange contacts details. I have a few more questions about Uruguay and I would appreciate the perspective of a native. Thank you.
Now you show your a educated person... you gain a like!
What about if your ex military and a gun owner ?
... leave your gun behind. this is not the USA, this is Uruguay
Ooroog-why
What about the political climat? Is it left or right? Is it conservative or liberal?
It’s a more feminist and liberal
@@thedanwriter1 feminist??????????????
@@mclovinnavideno4622 yes they have a growing feminist movement
Idk i would say mostly progressive, but the attitudes of the older populations are a lot more traditional and conservative. you really do get both which is the whole point of free speech
Many young people love the gender equality, sexuality equality, free healthcare, free education, and of course, legalised marijuana, BUT there are still misogynists who think only men can be useful or powerful in a family.
@@thedanwriter1 yeah feminism had a point ages ago. Nowadays Feminist means anti men movement. Also Liberals are only tolerant if people share their views.. the more i find out about other countries the more i appreciate my own country.

"you have to speak 'argentinian/Uruguayan' Spanish" this is rubbish!!! Uruguayans understand and welcome all Castellano/Español speakers.
Is like English, a person from the USA, a person from Australia, a person from England and a New Zealander, they all would have different accents, pronunciations, slang...but would be understood without a problem if they visiting or working in each other's country
👀
I found this video of no value. I cant order from amazon ok i wont go because i cant order from amazon
Ok and that's your opinion. But keep in mind many people look to move to south america looking for a "cheaper cost of living" and that really isn't the case here.
If you don't have a lot of money, no problem to buy your furniture at walmart/target. Here, they do have second hand markets but those are not the most convenient.
All i'm saying is, it's ok that the points i made didn't bother you, no problem, but that doesn't mean the video is useless.
thank you for the info, though a little more on ordinary lifestyle relating to ex- pats would have been helpful. I did struggle to understand your dialect even with trying to keep up with the on screen txt. too many words running into each other. a clearer, more explanative approach would have been much easier to absorb. Sounds to me as if the American influence is going to be a huge game changer for somebody like myself coming from the UK...This puts me off somewhat in making choices. This opinion is based on my having lived in the States for 9 years and I couldn't wait to leave finally. Respectfully I hope that Uraguay is not nearly so modelled as American society. Good luck and thank you again. Tom from the UK.
It is VERY influenced by the us, and most people here who speak english, it's with an american accent! And what exactly did you not understand? I find this interesting because where I'm from in Australia we speak the most "English" of all of australia, the most british sounding I should say! But if you have more specific questions we can answer them in an upcoming video! I plan to make a "what i wish i knew before moving here" but any specific questions are always helpful!
Dont worry too much about that. Uruguay seems to me to be MUCH more european-influenced (italy, britain, spain, france), than USA-influenced. We are a Spanish colony here, with big european influence from all over Europe. Back 50 years ago for example, french was the ONLY compulsory foreign language in schools nation-wide, just to give one example.
If you have more questions im willing to help out with more info.
No entiendo un carajo todo en ingles
A little too detailed and it seems like everything with you sounds like a question.... 6 to 16 minute long videos are much more attractive people are not devoting so much of their life to one single item..
Ok well if you want a less detailed answer: No. Don’t come here. Because if you can’t sit through a 20-30 minute video you absolutely do not have the patience to live in Uruguay 😂
Have a friend from out of country send you a good microphone & better camera for your channel. Your subscribers will increase
Hi michael, while I appreciate your interest it really is not that easy. also my friends all live in australia, Shipping is expensive. we will upgrade our equipment when we can. you are also the only one who has complained about the audio. I know its not great, but its good enough for now!
