    My current speedrun trick to gamedev success (details omitted):
    *Step 1:* Combine 2 or more sub-genres.
    *Step 2:* Create a paper trailer with only squares and text.
    *Step 3:* Make a narrow vertical slice.
    *Step 4:* Create the actual trailer.
    *Step 5:* I'm so close to falling asleep and drop my phone to the floor.
    *Step 6:* ... Alright that's it. Goodbye.

    Success has nothing to do with skill or talent. That applies to all areas of life where you see people and wonder how on earth THAT person ever became famous, rich, popular or any combination thereof because they clearly can't tell their arse from their elbows.
    In gamedev you see this even moreso where clearly lots of time, effort and careful planning was poured into a title and it just didn't get enough visibility, launched during a time where there was little interest in that aesthetic or genre or even just wasn't the kind of game which is capable of being showcased in eye-catching marketting because of what it is.
    Success starts with first being in the right place at the right time which makes the start of the process completely beyond your control, but how far that success goes DOES depend upon putting forth effort to milk that opportunity for all you can get.

    to be honest, we need a legit competition against monster hunter, especially with how terrible Crapcom is...
    Also, Everhood>Undertale.
    Also also, the best description of success:
    Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal
    Also, also, also, you don't know the dark side of being a popular developer...the world is a disgusting place full of BS, blackmail, backstabbing and lies. Truthfully, you don't want your game to be well known because when it is, that's when the vultures swoop in....I only know of it because I caught a stream of a developer willing to slightly expose the truth, but not name any names.

    • @gryzlaw
      @gryzlaw Před 28 dny +1

      It may be subjective but I don't see how Capcom is terrible in relation to Monster Hunter. Still isn't there quite a few competition for Monster Hunter already? Including God Eater and the free to play Dauntless, and now recently Wild Hearts?

    • @kukukachu
      @kukukachu Před 28 dny

      @@gryzlaw DRM, the war and attack on mods, their shitty DLC practices...layered armor and WEAPONS actually costing real money...the lack of having apex armor and weapons along with the monster. They were doing some pretty gross monetary stuff in World, with all that DLC crap, but it was easily ignorable, but paid DLC weapons and armor is absolutely unacceptable. One of the things I always respected about Monster Hunter is that you couldn't ever buy any of the armor or weapons, you always had to earn it if you wanted it....Crapcom has disrespected the core values of Monster Hunter. They have shown they have no respect for it and only see it as a way to get more money from more suckers...I'm disgusted...
      You're funny, those aren't competitors because they're failures. We need a competitor that can stand toe to toe with MH. A REAL competitor would be a franchise that would be loved and rememberd, would be brought up in conversation and praised.Wild Hearts was doomed from the start due to it being EA, Dauntless doesn't have the skill to pull it off, God Eater is just anime crap that is easily forgotten.
      People can try to mimic MH, but if they keep making bad business decisions, they'll never compete against the OG...and that's what I'm saying. Crapcom needs a real challenger, someone that threatens to actually take their playerbase away due to how good it is.

      Oh man, not my intention. As I mentioned in the video, this is not about quantity over quality. It’s about getting more efficacy in the process, so that we can bring more of our ideas to life. Games are incredibly difficult to bring to life. And hopefully the more we do it, the better we get. Anyway, thanks for being here!

    I dislike the implication that game dev needs to be done faster. There are a lot of pressures when making a game, and videos like this amplify that.
    Whilst the tips and advice are good, I think they're more about learning how to finish projects and gain experience rather than be faster.

    • @alex_oiman

    • @SoulEngineDev

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree, it’s not really about making games faster. It’s about being efficient in other ways that help you result in making games faster.
      I don’t think you should ever rush game development at all! I hope that comes through in this video. My hope is that we can all learn to be more efficient with our time in order to do what we love better. I appreciate the comment!

    • @SoulEngineDev
      @SoulEngineDev  Před 28 dny +1

      I’d hoped to encourage other game devs by showcasing what some really successful devs are doing, not necessarily claiming to have found incredible success on my own. However, I think the definition of “success” really is different for every dev.
      Regardless, glad you’re here! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      There is value in learning to make games faster. I'm all for speed (with quality).
      Like most things in life, it might look "less" fun at first, but with time you'll be able to get into flow state and have lots of fun making exactly what you want, quickly and effectively : ))
