Alright, guys, when it comes to using AI, don't use it if you have no idea what is going on. Only use it if you are confident in your own abilities to detect whenever Chat GPT lies to you. It is a TERRAIBLE way to learn how to code, or use an engine, or whatever technical thing you are trying to do. Its a good way give you an IDEA of what to do, but that's it. Read documentation. You might not like it but trust me, it'll take you way further.
This is great advice! And definitely lines up with what I’ve experienced too. AI is an amazing tool but it’s only as good as your knowledge on how to use it.
I actually disagree. I’ve been using chatgpt and it’s been 99% accurate and have increased my output about 1,000%
When the information is already out there (such as in the form of unity documentation and stack overflow). I find our current implementation of AI to be invaluable. Just for example I just asked chatgpt4 “using dotween write me a script scales a sprite as well as shake the screen and flashes him white”
Not only did it write working code for everything, but it also wrote it better than I probably would have wrote it. How it knew about dotween? Idk as I can’t even find good examples of usage online but chatgpt for learning and programming is beyond legit.
I’ve been using it nonstop for the last year at work and during my indie dev stuff. And it’s only been wrong one time. Hallucinated a function that didn’t exist. Once I told it the function didn’t exist it corrected its self and gave me a working script
A lot of great advice. The most important thing is to get good at planning and estimating as early as possible. That's why making short games is essential.
Could have not said it better myself!
Lots of great advice. I'm just starting my solo game dev career and your enthusiasm is encouraging!
You got this! This community is great for staying encouraged.
Thanks for your shared tips~ They're really really useful!
I’m so glad you like them and found them useful!
you got me... thanks for the advices.
We’ve got to encourage each other!
You’re a great communicator,and great tips too 👍🏻
Thank you so much, I appreciate that!
If I have 1 tip to give is this
Fail, i want you to fail time and time again, fail make mistakes, get frustrated and learn
There are no shortcuts, no one will do it for you, while it's okay to ask for help, no one will make your game for you
Do you want to make a game, Go do it, I believe in you
So true, and great advice! Failing is a fantastic way to learn and grow.
Thanks! Great video, subscribed. Some thoughts on your points: 1) Clear goals, so important. Also with this I'd say: having solid internal deadlines for milestones is important to. Especially if you are FT indie solo dev, not having a boss breathing down your neck is nice, but also not great for hitting milestones sometimes. 2) CZcams channel: marketing is the most challenging thing in 2024 for us. The worst would be making an amazing game, but no one ever seeing it. I've been thinking of doing this YT thing but man, what a time sink and its not something I'd enjoy doing... 4) Thanks for being pro AI! And not just for making the game, but using the new potential in gameplay. In my current game I'm making, Roadhouse Manager on Steam, I'm embracing this new tech wholly, by having live-AI powered NPCs. I want to be in the first wave of AI-powered games, as we can now make games that were never possible before... 5) Avoid isolation. Totally important! I recommend the how to market a game discord that I just joined. 8) Tough call. I see what your saying, but for me I love being a solo dev and paying for assets or contractors for game parts as opposed to working on a team or getting a partner. Think it's a YMMV thing. Anyways great video, thanks!
Thank you so much! Everyone has a different experience when it comes to game dev, and somethings may not work for others! Thank you for sharing your perspective!
These really hit home for me.
Love to hear this! So glad you’re here.
Great Tips. What game are you using for footage in the background?
Thank you! It’s Hyperlight Drifter!
great video
Thank you!
Yea, my biggest supporters of my game I'm making are my YT community right now. \m/
Glad you’re here!
"I've never published anything. Here's 8 tips on how to publish something." - random youtube guy
That's not actually the title, but nice try. All 8 tips are great 👌
Haha! Thanks for the comment. Our studio actually has released jam games on itch.io, but I would argue that regardless, you don’t have to have published anything (yet) to be considered a game dev. We’re all learning and growing and going after our dream to make games. I just think CZcams is a great place to find support and offer encouragement to others, so I thought I would share what we’ve learned because I wish I would have known this stuff earlier!
Thanks for sharing these tips
Absolutely!
The second advice is wrong. You won't build a players community by talking about game development. Real players don't care about dev things.
YT channel is also will drain a lot of time and effort for few views.
Thanks for checking out the video! These are just tips for game devs looking for ways to better themselves and their process. Not everything will make sense for every person-but I’ve found a lot of support from game devs on CZcams for our game jam games in the past. And I’ve found that putting time and energy into CZcams has helped me focus my goals and vision! But that’s just me. Glad you’re here!
