As a hobbyist indie game developer, I find it inspiring to hear about the hit indie game successes. Although financial outcomes definitely aren't everything, hearing indie game dev success stories helps with a bit of motiviation, especially when game dev burnout is hitting hard.
Despite the odds, there are a handful of very talented solo indie game developers and game designers that have achieved unparalleled levels of success. So I think its beneficial to hear some more of those game dev stories for a bit of inspiraton!
Here are some of the most successful indie games developed by a single person!
First is Kenshi, developed by Christ Hunt and Lo-Fi Games, and released in 2013. Kenshi features a massive open world, where you can do almost anything. Since its release, Kenshi has sold over 1 million copies and made an estimated revenue of $32 million.
Papers, Please is a dystopian border simulator, solo developed by Lucas Pope and released also in 2013. Papers, Please released to massive accolades and was nominated for several awards. Its estimated that Papers, Please has sold over 1.8 million copies and pulled in almost $10 million of revenue.
Geometry dash is one of the most famous mobile indie games ever. First developed by Robert "RobTop" Topala and released in 2013, Geometry Dash is a true indie dev smash mobile success with over $21 million in revenue.
For a indie game fan favorite, Five Nights at Freddy's was solo developed by Scott Cawthon and released in 2014. FNAF has become so popular that there are now a ton of spinoff games, a graphic novel series, and even a rumored movie project. Cawthon has an estimated net worth of $70 million from the entire FNAF franchise.
Bright Memory was solo developed by Zeng Xiancheng and released on steam in 2019. Bright Memory is a fast paced magical FPS. Bright Memory and its successor Bright Memory: Infinite have a combined estimated revenue of $16 million.
Lastly is the metroidvania Axiom Verge, solo built by Thomas Happ, and released in 2015. With a classic pixel art style and vibe, Axiom Verge has reached $1.7 million in revenue just on Steam alone!

I do not claim to own any or all of the pictures/footage that may be shown in this video.

Any financial topics discussed are not financial advice.
Channel produced by Rainy Sunday LLC.
Remember: you don't necessarily have to spend years of hard work to see financial success. Just good gameplay and good marketing.
"Iron lung" was made in a relatively short time and currently sits at 150k copies sold ($740k), because it's author had a following to give it initial visibility and the horror community liked it.
That's a great point! Thanks!
Successful indie game developers: Has years of working as a professional in the industry before making a breakthrough as an indie
My dumb and ambitious ass: "I'll do it in a few weeks as a beginner", "My first game will be my biggest", "How do I code to move my character?"
Nothing wrong with a bit of hope haha
For independent developers, how to increase exposure is the most difficult😭
Don't worry. I got you bro
@@mikhailhumphries Thank you for understanding. Are you also an independent game developer?
@@wonkmy636 I'm trying to develop a mobile game on android.
Marketing is definitely a challenge for sure!
You're not just developing a game, you are selling it too! that means learning how to grab a strangers attention and show them the most exciting aspects of it, educating them why they will like it and why they need it, immediately.
You can easily read or listen to audiobooks on marketing, sales, and storytelling. One simple sentence could increase your results by 100x or more.
The book "made to stick" contains more usable knowledge on getting attention and being remembered than many other books combined.
The world needs your game, so you need to succeed!
Your videos are always good! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much!
this video about to blow up

Bruhsella back at delivering top notch content
aye cheers!
This video is nothing short of amazing! Your game design skills are truly awe-inspiring, and I found myself feeling so inspired by your work. After watching this, I decided to create my own game, and I've made a lot of money from it. I even made a video about it on my CZcams channel. Thank you for being such a wonderful source of inspiration!
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
Wow! Amazing I wouldn't have imagined they made so much money!! You can also check out the game Sapiens made by one person, maybe he is not a millionaire but he made an entire world by himself. It would also be cool to see info of the other 99.9% of indie developers. How much they make and all of that 🙂
Ya there are some interesting stats on what games actually perform well on steam. I think roguelite deckbuilders are towards the top right now!
Add Edmund McMillan to your next video! He made super meat boy and the binding of isaac!
Great shoutout!
Now slash that game money sales by 30% from steam and another 40ish depending on the state you live in and you got.............. Damn I really hate taxes
And that's if a publisher doesn't take any haha
Choo-Choo Charles made by 1 guy 4.8 Mil gross revenue, Cultic also made by 1 guy 860k gross revenue chapter 2 soon soo ez millionaire :)
Choo choo charles is such an interesting game idea haha
can you show growtopia in another video, growtopia was developed by 2 developers in 2012, seth a. robinson and hamumu. but eventually in 2017 game sold for ubisoft but the price that they sold it for isnt available because of a contract.
Interesting, ya I'll take a look at it!
Scott and Robtop are proof that you should follow your dreams.
Binding of isaac is a great one :)
One day ,one of my games will be on this list..m
Cheers!
good research! or so I assume, haven't finished watching yet
Appreciate it!
Lol here i am trying to make the smallest fraction of a million
INSPIRING
Minecraft before sold to Microsoft was a project of a single person.. He made millions already while the game was in the beta and alpha phase...
This video was amazing but I feel like Stardew Valley deserves an honorable mention of some sorts. Just my opinion
Thank you! And I actually called out Stardew Valley in my first video for indie game millionaires here! czcams.com/video/FuZSrSnyRcg/video.html
@@ByteOfMichael Oh, i'll give that video a watch then. Thanks!
