  • I want to talk about paper today. But not just any ordinary paper, this paper has print on both sides! There are a lot of video games that have artwork for the inside of the case, and some of this artwork is intended to be an alternative version to the game case box art. I love having the option to be creative with how I display my collection! These reversible game covers are a perfect way to change things up, but only if they fit my very specific criteria with I use any.
    Music Used:
"Rito Village (Night)" from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
"The Professor's Trunk (Minicar)" from Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
    "Fronteir Village" from Xenoblade Chronicles
"3DS eshop" from the Nintendo 3DS
    "Got an amiibo" from Miitopia
"Syrup's Theme" from Wario Land Shake It!
    "Main Menu" from Sonic Mania
"11 PM" from Animal Crossing New Leaf
"Yoshi's Island" from Super Smash Bros. Brawl
"Windmill Hills" from Donkey Kong Country Returns
"It Happened Late One Evening" from Secret of Mana
"Main Theme (Evening)" from Nintendo Land
"Analysis" from Big Brain Academy Brain vs. Brain
"Super Pipe House" from Super Mario RPG
"This Horizon (& Knuckles Ending)" from Sonic Mania
"Ilia's Theme" from The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
    "Victory!!" from Super Mario RPG

Just looked it up and I really like that one too! It's close enough to the default switch case design that I don't think I would mind having it stick out just a bit to be able to have that displayed. Now the Splatoon 3 box art having the yellow may be a bit too far but that pink is nice! The more stylized art is really good too!

Here in Germany we have quite a lot reversible covers for smaller releases (almost never AAA games. Those devs need the money to survive, apparently /s). A lot of them just depict the same art, but without the big Age Rating on the cover. Which is much appreciated. A few dont have the info on the backside but still the spine, which is a bit half assed. And a few have completely unique designs.

    • @SamTuckMan
      @SamTuckMan  Před 12 dny

I was noticing that the PAL regions tended to get more reversible covers. That's great that they do that, I wish the states had a similar treatment because I would love to have the option to get rid of the age rating on the front. I hate when they get rid of info on the back but at the same time it is an extra option that the publishers didn't have to include so hard to complain too much I suppose.

Well, Final Fantasy XV does have a proper reversible cover. The one you showcase in the video is the "Day One Edition" which does not have the proper Spine. Whereas if you look at the standard box art you can reverse it to either to have the gang walking with the car or flip around to have the throwback cover with a proper spine. I don't know why the "Day One Edition" does not have the proper spine with a PS4 logo and blue border, but this entry did in fact do it first and FFXVI did take notes.

I like to appreciate the art of manuals, covers, the disc itself and everything else, so I think it's a horror to buy a new game and immediately see that the "reverse cover" is just a bunch of text and the game comes without a manual...
it seems that many producers have lost their passion for doing these things, I believe that most of those that still do it are just to give the impression that this is a higher quality game, which is why almost all of them are always special editions or AAA games

    • @SamTuckMan
      @SamTuckMan  Před 11 dny +1

The Wii era really was the peak for game manuals, disc art, and box art in my opinion. I used to admire, and still do when I go back to those older games, all the art in and on the game case. It's a real shame that those practices are gone. Some games just feel so devoid of personality and charm. I love that a lot of the indie games or smaller releases try to do either a tiny manual or some sort of art on the inside of the case to pick up the slack of AAA games

I had no clue they rusted! That honestly defeats the whole purpose of having a "premium" case to be honest

@@SamTuckMan yeah. Unless you apply some sort of protective coating maybe twice a year, rust will get to it. I'd recommend spray painting on something called clear coat and wait for maybe a week for it to dry

@teneesh3376 I'll definitely have to look into that for the few steel books I've got. They may not be my favorite, but that doesn't mean I can't take good care of them! The more ya know

@@SamTuckMan yeah. Look at car recoating tutorials. It's the same process without the primer and paint. If it's a mostly steel one with no rust on the paint, sand it off. Like the halo 2 one. If rust is already setting, just don't bother. Unless you are a really good artist

Aww no representation of PS1 and PS2,

I only own a couple sports games for the PS1 that were handed down to me from my dad and I don't own a PS2 or any PS2 games so I don't have as much knowledge on those libraries. I did try searching those consoles for any games with reversible covers when trying to find the first games to do that but didn't find anything

For me by far the best implementation of a reversable cover is Rodea The Sky Soldier on Wii U.
The game was originally developed, finished and manufactured for the Wii, very late during the development the decision was made to create a 3DS Port and release both versions at the same time. Problem was, that Port took much longer than expected and the Publisher now had a decision to make: Release the Wii version as is despite the Wii U already being on the market, cancel the Wii Version and only release it on 3DS or make a Wii U version of the game. They then ported the 3DS Version to the Wii U.
Since they still had the Wii version they already printed the first (and only) print run of the Wii U got the Wii Discs and Manuals thrown in as a Bonus, and the Original Wii Art was used as a reversible cover. That way everyone could decide if they shelf Rodea with ther Wii U or Wii games.

How have I never heard of this! That's so cool the treatment that game got despite all that could have gone wrong with that situation. They really made the most of it and ended up with such a unique product to release!
It is a little strange seeing a Wii game in the WiiU blue case but honestly, I think it works perfectly for the circumstances surrounding Rodea.
I'm glad you brought this up because I might not have ever heard about this. Definitely a really unique but very practical reversible cover art for a game
