  • Today I'm reviewing The Thing Omnibus by John Byrne and Mike Carlin from Marvel Comics! This collection of Thing solo adventures, particularly after Secret Wars, are definitely entertaining '80s comics.

Have you read The Thing by John Byrne and Mike Carlin? 🤔📚

I loved John Byrne's Fantastic Four, and if John Byrne was on art duties, i would have picked this up. But, without Byrne's art, i will give this Omni a miss.
I remember picking up #31 and #34-36 from UK newsagemts, and, i believe around those issues Marvel introduced the Power Broker character. The Power Broker will be Sharon Carter in the MCU.
    Great overview.

Understandable! I definitely had fun with the run though :)

This is a great series. The Byrne script is... slightly above average. Nothing groundbreaking, but fun, and it captures Ben's character well. This series was spun directly out of my favorite Marvel comic series of all time - Marvel Two in One, a team-up book that starred The Thing and a slew of other Marvel heroes. It ran for 100 issues and 7 annuals. It was canceled in 1983 to make way for the solo series. A significant portion of the art for both series was by Ron Wilson - my personal favorite Thing artist.
Fun fact: Marvel Comics exists inside the Marvel Universe. They have a contract with the FF and Avengers to publish comics about the teams' adventures. There's a short in the back of one of the Thing comics, written and drawn by Byrne, where Ben got... upset... because Byrne and Co. had taken... liberties to make one of his adventures more... exciting. He went down to the Marvel offices and told writer Byrne, artist Wilson, and Editor Louise Simonson to check their clock, because they clearly didn't know what time it was.
This volume and the Rom omnibus are on my must-have list.

Appreciate you writing this out and giving context :) I was aware of some of this but not all! Ha
Yeah, I had a lot of fun reading this! Especially reading Secret Wars last year it was very fun reading the Rocky Grimm on Battleworld stuff 💪👏
I am curious about ROM but may be one I pass on personally

I’ve been wondering how I should go about reading this when I read Byrnes FF run. I feel like they would cross over so I would need to read this with Byrnes FF run at the same time.

There is certainly a bit of overlap but I’d say overall I was surprised how disconnected it felt. I’d say it’s almost more important to coordinate around Secret Wars and this

Thanks for the overview! I was thinking about checking this out after I finished the second Byrne FF Omni but never got around to it

Yeah I started the first Byrne FF Omni and read the secret wars Omni and I knew this was one I hoped to get to!
It can be a lot of fun if you know what you’re getting :) 📚

It was good when Byrne was writing it, but when Carlin took over, let's just say he's a better editor than he was a writer.

that is interesting how he can congtrol and go back and forth between the thing and his normal human body... so he has to fight to become and stay a man. I never knew that!
