    Enjoyed the video as always, Tennessee!
    I was incredibly excited about this omni when it was announced, right up until the solicits noting it was standard sized. I could put up with the recoloring (even though Frank Thorne disliked it), the lack of a dust jacket, the absence of any new extras (beyond the forewords from the TPB collections), all of that. But just slapping three existing TPBs into a hardcover and charging $100 for it, without even making it oversized? I went back and forth, but ultimately couldn’t make myself buy it. (Plus as you alluded to, because of the different dimension sizes between comics and magazines, the SSoC reprint stories are actually *smaller* than standard size, with extra large borders.)
    I did email Dynamite and (very politely) noted that I and many other fans would be happy to pay a little extra for a nice, oversized hardcover that could sit on a shelf next to our Marvel and Titan REH character oversized hardcovers. Not holding my breath, but here’s hoping they make that happen someday.

      Thanks for the support!
      Yep, that sizing was an odd thing for me. Not sure what the rationale was on that and all I can think of was that they were trying to have a lower price point than the comparable Omnibus' and this was where they decided to make that happen. Seemed odd by comparison but it really jumped off the page to me when I opened up the first issue and saw all that empty white space on the page.
      Good job on emailing Dynamite! We don't get what we don't ask for and perhaps if enough of us ask for that they may listen? I don't see comic companies listening too often to the consumer (with one noted recent exception that made me quite happy), but I have faith that everyone wants to do their best so if we just communicate it, perhaps that will yield results.

    Love the coloring on this, but yeah, why not charge me a little more and at least have the size match all my Conan and Kull Omnis?

      Right??? How much harder would that have been to follow the format already out there? So strange, but I guess they just wanted to follow their own format.

    Titans conan books will not have the marvel issues. They have the same problem as dynamite: copyright issues.

    • @tennesseefats
      @tennesseefats  Před 10 měsíci

      Yep, that is what I had figured afterwards. I think that copyright issues are in fact something that is going to really hamper any sort of "all-inclusive" collection of any one character or the other. It's a shame really.

    Great video! Love hearing your thoughts on this book. When you mentioned the movie Girl, Interrupted I had just thought that to myself as well haha. It’s funny how words just remind us of things like that sometimes

      Thanks and glad you liked it. I kept this one shorter and just did a general review instead of really diving into the minutia.
      That movie reference was a surprise even for me but you are totally right about the word association. It’s weird sometimes where it takes us!

      Excellent video! Great job, as it became a trademark of your channel.
      Unfortunately, the licensed/copyright materials also plagues Conan's Omni. If you pick up "The Original Marvel Years" Omni either Conan, the Barbarian or Savage Sword of Conan, any story where Red Sonja is a "guest" character it is okay to be published as originally she appeared under the banner of Conan's product line. Any Red Sonja story which Conan pops up as a "guest" cannot be included in the Omni. As a side note, I believe Titan will be reprinting and continuing these Conan's Omni.
      Sir, that part "beggars cannot be choosers" resonates with me and I have learnt to ignore small issues, such as blunt corners or smudges, I am on the stage that is is better to have the material rather than not :)
      And thank you for posting the follow-up video on the shipping conditions of the books.

      @@Plague_Archangel Yep I had wondered about that. I've the Omni's for Kull and the King Conan one and a few of the later Conan and Savage Sword ones but I have not opened those yet as I want to make sure I have the earlier ones to actually read the story as it goes forward. It'll likely be a MANY year project to make that happen but eventually I'll get there. I guess if there's no Red Sonja content that's under her banner then I guess I really do have to have this Omnibus (or at least the pertinent components of it that you need).
      I totally agree with you, it's far better to have 90% of something as opposed to 100% of nothing - so I'll take my creased copy and just consider myself lucky for having it.
      No problem with the followup component! I filmed the opening with myself rambling away when I did that last week as I assumed I would use it at some later point and I thought "why not just include it here?"
      Thanks for the ongoing support and the positive response!👍

      @@tennesseefats I pulled from my bookshelf the vol 1 omnibus of the "Original Marvel Years Savage Sword of Conan" and double-checked the info about Red Sonja.
      Mild-spoilers:
      On this omnibus they start it off by reprinting the magazine "Savage Tales" where Conan was firstly published and I mean they reprinted the entirety of it, including other Character stories, not related to Conan (as it was a mixed magazine) such as Kazar, Man-thing, Black Brother, etc.
      However, any Red Sonja material, even pin-ups are not reprinted, you will only see it listed in the Reproduction of the Content page of Savage Tales where Red Sonja appeared.
      There is a long and detailed introduction by Roy Thomas and he in passing mention the copyright/license materials that could not be used when preparing the omnibus.

      @@Plague_Archangel Well Poop! Sounds like this copyright issues is making us buy both the Dynamite and Marvel/Titan books if we want the whole content.
      Well I guess that's not so bad...but would definitely be nicer if this license could just fall to the same company...
      Thanks for checking that! 👍

      I just took a look-see to see what she would have written that I may have read and I think I did read a few of the individual issues within her Red Sonja run, but I definitely have not done a review.
      Is there something in there that I should take a look for? I believe there is a hardcover collection out there of just her work on Red Sonja.

  • @findango
    @findango Před 11 měsíci +1

    I did collect all the Marvel Sonja's, as there wasn't that many issues. But, I'm not as stringent of a collector with the Red Sonja stuff today. In that case, it's not really the story so much, but the art, when it's decent. I did pick this up, as a companion piece to the Marvel Omnibuses, and the upcoming Titan ones to get the story, or as much as possible, in hardcover format for the shelf. It's annoying dealing with the copy right issues, but I do have the originals too.

    • @tennesseefats
      @tennesseefats  Před 11 měsíci +1

    The re-coloring job is terrible with muddy colors and makes it unreadable. Was it too much to ask to keep the original coloring?

      @tennesseefats  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @asimian8500 Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@tennesseefats Complete change. They used a terrible colorist(s) who shaded with black, creating muddy colors. You see the same nonsense in many collections. The EC treasury books come to mind with the same crappy coloring.

      @@tennesseefats It's EC Archives. I'm looking at the EC Archives Haunt of Fear, Weird Fantasy, and Vault of Horror volumes which I own and they have the same re-coloring problems. Even looks like the same colorist, but what happened likely was there was a set of guidelines on what colors to use and how to use lights/shadow along with the colors. Likely outsourced outside of the United States to color them quickly and cheaply. Also, almost everyone has the same flesh color and shadow colors which makes it monotonous.
      Marvel Masterworks has a different issue. While they used the original colors, it's garish as the original comics were printed on grainy, low quality, matte newsprint and used Dr. Ph Martin's colored inks which had muted colors on the newsprint. The Masterworks uses higher quality glossy paper and the "original" colors scream out due to the intense saturation which could have been muted in Photoshop to be more readable and realistic.

    • @Graphicxtras1
      @Graphicxtras1 Před 10 měsíci +2

      That was the main reason I didn't buy this, I thought the colours made the whole thing totally unreadable (as they were when they brought them out in paperback). Very disappointed with this book, thought they were going to do a totally decent oversized omnibus with good re-colouring of the work (if needs be). Been buying the Black and white versions here in the UK, they look so much nicer. If only they did the colouring like the new Atlas Library from fantagraphics

    First off, thanks for the review, was humming and hawing about picking it up, i think ill pass on this one. Im slowly completing my Savage Sword run, im just past issue 200 now so looking forward to 207-210. Now i love that you do "easter eggs" every now and then and this topic is something im very interested in your review on. Im no mint hunter by any stretch but it really annoys me when i want a copy to put away and it looks like a reader copy before you even flip page one. That foil movie poster variant is killer and one i really wanted, if you don't mind what did it cost you?
    Now i know you will break it all down when you complete your study, but the $$$ conversion must hurt a bit.

    • @tennesseefats
      @tennesseefats  Před 11 měsíci +1

      No problemo! I was somewhat excited about this one when I first heard of it so I knew I was going to read it, and after that doing the quick review was just the fun that ended off the process!
      Yep, if you're a core Conan guy this one may not be the one for you (as I found out).
      That SSOC run is a TOUGH one to get - great work on getting what you have together on that one - I know I'm no-where close as what I have is all over the map at this point, but I'll continue plunking way on it.
      Glad you're enjoying the after-video rants! I like to thrown them in. I know it screws with the CZcams Algorithm a bit but I think it's fun and that's not what I'm here for anyways.
      This topic is one that has been bothering me for decades now but I've never really cared about anything that's new to the market enough to really want those higher grade copies.
      That changed though with new Titan run beginning; I wanted to make sure I was getting what I actually wanted with these so this is what triggered me finally doing this "quiet" test. I'll let you know how it goes when I do put together the findings and I'll likely hide that in the back of another video later on.
      That one was a great cover and I think that came out when I was somewhat dumb-struck for a second when I first put eyes on it. The raw cost wasn't that bad as I just checked my order and that was $9.09 USD. Not too bad when you have the subscription discount on it, but then there's shipping and conversion which just adds it all up.

    I only have one single gripe,(Minor though it may be) Dynamite Entertainment has a tendency to color Red Sonja's eyes green, whereas in Marvel, her eyes are blue. My personal theory for Red Sonja is that REH's Red Son-Ya of Rogatino is caught in a Time-Loop where she was sent back to The Age of Hyboria roughly a year or so after the events of "Shadow of the Vulture". Additionally she lost a good portion of her memories during her trip.
