    A note regarding this exercise's safety: it's all about stress management, but this exercise can be hard on the knees, anecdotally (no research indicates it's injurious). So can most exercises that go into deep knee flexion. When you do the exercise for high reps with a controlled tempo, retaining muscle tension in the bottom, the risk-reward is good in my experience.

      Is there a brand that you recommend? I am going to ask our gym to purchase one of these. Thanks so much!

      I think you should note that this exercise is uniquely stressful on the ACL due to the forward pressure on the upper tibia (from behind). Almost no other squat pattern has this kind of pressure, so this makes this exercise different from regular squatting, lunging, or leg extensions. The risk here is not due to depth, but due to this unusual translational pressure. While almost any exercise can have a time & place, this one seems particularly risky. I wouldn’t recommend it.

    i don't think this is a sissy squat. a sissy squat is when you put your knees over your toes and touch the floor with them whilst keeping a straight back. this is more of a matrix leg extension without the straight back element

      IMO you are absolutely right. The real sissy squat targets the quads in a STRETCHED position, specifically the rectus femoralis, wich as opposed to the other muscles of the quadricep, is involved not only in knee extension but also in hip flexion, therefore giving a better hypertrophy stimulus according to recent data.

    I do them with a very thick band around an immovable object and the back of the top of my lower legs and call them Spanish squats. Done with a slow deep eccentric I find them really useful pre- squat or leg press.

    Why not do the traditional Sissy Squat? It's way less harsh on the knees.

    Does this machine train the Rectus Femoris at all?

    • @supersad123
      @supersad123 Před 9 měsíci +1

      No

    • @reallyeffingcooltechnodude
      @reallyeffingcooltechnodude Před 8 měsíci

      Yes it does since rectus femoris is one of the muscles which flex the knee joint. It's probably not optimal since rectus femoris is never fully stretched during this movement.. Good exercises to target rectus femoris: regular sissy squat, pedulum sissy squat, reverse nordics.

      Depends on the machine. Often, I'd say yes, but leg extensions will probably win out for the RF.

      Sissy squats are for the quads, not the glutes.

    • @abso1773
      @abso1773 Před 9 měsíci

      @@sovietpigeon1364yes, but not these sissy squats. This is mostly quads but also involves the glutes because they go through their full range of motion and have good leverage for the movement. Normal sissy squats keep the glutes 100% contracted the entire motion so the only thing contracting are your quads.

  • @liamfrancis71
    @liamfrancis71 Před 9 měsíci +2

    This is not a sissy squat. A sissy squat has no movement at the hip and is purely a knee extension movement. Why do people call this a sissy squat? Is just a squat.

  • @LisaBalmer
    @LisaBalmer Před 15 dny

    I know this to be a Spanish squat not a sissy squat.... I do both of these exercises

  • @jameshegeman5660
    @jameshegeman5660 Před 27 dny

    I like this channel, but this exercise, in this position, is a bad idea. It’s not the depth - it’s the forward pressure on the upper tibia. While no exercise is inherently “bad”, the stress on the ACL from this particular arrangement will be far, far higher than almost any other choice of squat pattern. It seems unnecessarily risky.
