- Melatonin might be the only underrated supplement in the world. In this episode, I discuss everything you need to know about this amazing sleeping pill.
I don't recommend relying on pills when it's not necessary, so if you can optimize your sleep quality without them, that's even better. This is for those who need a little extra to optimize their sleep.

Anecdotally, my experience with melatonin has been positive. I used to have epilepsy when I was a kid, thankfully I've had it "cured" (based on my neurosurgeon's definition of "cured") via surgery. Used to take me ~1-2 hours to sleep, both pre and post-surgery, melatonin (around ~10 mg/night, fairly high dose) knocks me out within an hour.
Keep up the good content, Menno 👍
I work night shifts in a hospital ICU. Melatonin is very useful for adjusting my sleep schedule relative to my work schedule.
Thank you for creating this video.
Thanks for the educational video! It’s crazy how the time-release melatonin products have claims to keep you stay asleep longer. I thought it really helped but it might as well be a placebo based on your findings.
Not having problem with sleep but still useful. Might try it in the future if i start having problems. Thanks for the video.
You highlighted one of the best uses of melatonin imo, which is as an aid to change your sleep schedule...I do rotating shift work, so there can be large variability in when I need to go to bed day to day. This was wrecking my overall sleep, until I started taking melatonin 30min before I needed to go to bed. I'd say it made things about 80% easier, I can actually fall asleep 3 hours earlier than the day before instead of just staring at the ceiling.
Awesome information and delivery - thanks for making this one, Menno!
Love this lecture style, would love more, even long form stuff
Myo Inositol (750 mg) actually works best for me in regards to how fast I fall asleep and the perceived depth/quality of sleep.
What do you think about the studies showing the negative effects on dopamine production the next day? Andrew Huberman talks about this in his podcasts on sleep and recommends avoiding it like the plague. I still take it from time to time Ive had trouble sleeping my whole life
Which studies?
Very good video. Is there any chance that you would do video like this about ginkgo biloba for studying and its other effects?
Great video. Would like to hear the pros and cons for other sleep supplements such as magnesium, theanine, gaba, Htp 5 and other like chamomile…
"Perfect Sleep!" Well it doesn't keep you asleep or improve your sleep at all, but yeah!!!
You should discuss this with Matthew Walker or at least look into what he has said on the topic. IIRC his biggest problem with melatonin was its effect on other hormones and people tend to take far too much (which you addressed already).
I have tried melatonin for extended periods to help my inability to fall asleep, and it severely fucked me. I had an extremely hard time waking up, I had nightmares, and I was exhausted
Does supplementing with exogenous MT lead to downregulation of endogenous MT production by the brain?
He said in the video that it doesn't.
The only downside I get from melatonin is that I am way drowsier during the first part of the day upon waking up, I think it's because of the effect of it lasting longer than expected.
That's an indication you may benefit from a lower dose.
Not available in the UK, and you can't have it shipped over either.
Available on prescription, however.
I find that stuff is a damn miracle for moving my body's natural "wakey wakey!" time. Especially useful if I need to adjust my sleep schedule to get up earlier, without losing sleep.
Something I wonder is the effect of naps. If the sleep quality at nights isn't good or optimal, can naps in the day can somehow "compensate"? Eg. I lack 1h of sleep but get one extra hour through a nap later.
What about the effects of melatonin on testosterone production?
There are none, unless you're a rodent. In mammals some research even suggests upregulation.
"Doesn't stop you from waking up"
Can't stress this enough, if you try to fix your sleep schedule with this, by sleeping earlier, you will likely wake up. Making it good for naps at best.
Presumably great if you're tired but can't sleep for some reason, but it absolutely fails at making you sleep significantly earlier in one go.
Not a silver bullet, but perhaps a decent aid. (His one hour remark seems to be on point for my experience with it)
It can delay puberty in children. It's insane that a hormone is sold OTC as gummies specifically for kids at astronomical doses.
Tried it. No effect!
I actually fall asleap quickly. But only when naturally tired. And that happens very late. So, if melatonin had worked, it would help me keep regular hours. Unfortunately it has no effect on me.
I first tried 3 mg, then 6 mg.
Try a fast acting one. I use one brand that didn't do anything then I tried a quick dissolving one that worked really well.
Any advice for a supplement for those who wake up frequently during the night?
Magnesium citrate sometimes works, but it depends on what's waking you up.
@@menno.henselmans hi menno, what's your views on the melatonin and L theanine combination supplement?
thx!@@menno.henselmans
Bro it's Dr Mike but with legs do more
For me I use 1.5 mg...but 1 hour before I make my own capsule with 100mg l Theanin and ca.500 till 600 mg GABA... I put this 2 things in a capsule and take it ça. 2 hours before sleep. As a finisher😅I take 2 drops of 10% CBD.
This all with blueblocker glasses of course..made me good sleeping and waking up.
Melatonin gave me nightmares and sleep paralysis. This is a very common side effect of it. Lowest dosage possible. Never again.
What do you say to the tiny effect sizes in the general population (and even in some predisposed populations)?
Some people don't need it, as they produce enough on their own, but overall, melatonin is top tier.
What do you think about taking magnesium before bed? Seems to improve my sleep quality.
placebo
@@angelvenegas6143no it is not a placebo at all.
There's not much research on it, but yes, I've experienced the same with many clients. It's mostly when someone's deficient in it, but that's super common these days.
All your videos should be liked more or less. Premium content.
i infact have problem in staing asleep, not falling asleep; and infact melatonin makes nothing for me!😩
on the contrary… i felt super tired even when i woke upmin the morning, and that’s the reason why i never liked it and i stop taking after very short time!
Interesting. Andrew Humberman does not recommend it, if i recall correctly.
Excuse me? No side effect even at high dose? No way!
Can i use this 3/4x a week?
Sure, yes.
"This natural supplement produces perfect sleep without addiction".
Can it get more clickbait than this?
Exactly

Huberman podcast says the opposite.
Huberman also talks a lot of shit, with all due respect of course, he is definitely a positive figure in the health world.
Huberman talks about allot of things he isn’t an expert on. He also falls into the naturalistic fallacy very frequently.
@@RostamTorki he brought in an expert for that podcast.
Huberman is also wrong.
