Is taking melatonin as a supplement a good idea? | Dr. Satchin Panda

- Melatonin, also called the sleepiness hormone, is produced primarily in the pineal gland of the brain. In response to waning daylight levels, melatonin levels rise, typically two hours before habitual bedtime, and decline in the morning. Melatonin is also produced in the gut and is available as a dietary supplement. Some people with primary sleeping disorders use melatonin to help them fall asleep. While some research indicates that melatonin helps with sleep latency - or the ability to fall asleep - it may not support a person's ability to stay asleep. The increasing popularity of melatonin as a sleep aid may be due to its lower side effect profile than other sleeping medications. In this clip, Dr. Satchin Panda describes the pharmacokinetics and possible benefits and drawbacks of taking supplemental melatonin.

Rhonda, have you heard of Doris Loh and her melatonin research on its antioxidant value?
@@mellen5598. yes this description does not go into the anti-inflammatory property of melatonin and how it affects the mitochondria
I had this exact question! Cant wait to watch this!
I am taking 5-6 drops which is just under 1 mg. I have felt great effects. I find it easy to go back to sleep if I wake up.
3mg liquid 2 hours before usual bed time works well, done for decades now. I do found liquid version works much better than pills/caps. I have never found as he claims, the need for higher and higher doses for the same effects, 1-3mg appears optimal for most. Some need as little as 500mcg for good effects.
2 hours before bedtime…. 1mg knocks me out within 20-30 min. I literally have to drop everything and go to bed 🙈
I can't believe how much misconception there is about melatonin i'd written it off for ages out of fear of physical dependency and hormone dysfunction
it shouldnt be used for a long time. pineal gland will stop working
@@nagruvajsewhat, thats cap and your own opinion
no, thats an actual word from serious doctors like dr paul mason, dr steve ekberk, dr wilhemi de toledo etc, you are just having a mental issue called WISHFULL THINKING. you wish i wasnt right, but i am. there are no cheat codes in life, no magic pills, fix your life, or wreck your health, your choice.@@honobuyonezawa2054

@@willbrink ive stated few doctors and showed you the way. find it yourself. i would start with steve ekberk
I can't find any information re long term melatonin use is safe and beneficial or not.
Wonder about sublingual versions........
do you still take melatonin after this interview rhonda?
Sooooo is it ok or not?

What about timed release??
What about timed release???
I would also like to know this!
I don't have the source links, sorry, but personally don't do time release
Finally, Rhonda, a researcher whose FACTS align with many years of personal experience.
in Europe melatonin maximum dose you can buy without prescription is 1.96 mg
I take 40mg melatonin with Thorne's multivitamin PM. Sometimes I will add some chamomile tea and a hot bath with epsom salt. I am also going to eliminate all unnatural light and use candles a couple hours before bedtime.
40mg?? If that's not a typo then you need to seriously take a lower dose. Anything more than even 2mg will destroy your bodies natural melatonin release after just a week. You should be using less than 0.5mg, ideally 0.05-0.3mg for optimal mid to long term results.
Please disregard @uiji . Clearly if you're at 40mg you know very well that you can handle that amount quite easily. I've used melatonin for 8 years and at first had the same fear and caution around it that others do but this was based on misinformation. Eventually I found the videos of Russell Reiter Ph.D who is the world's leading expert on this master molecule. Dr. Reiter has admitted to taking personally as much as 100mg daily, and this is from a man who has researched melatonin for over half a century. The anti-aging effects of this hormone are absolutely tremendous and there is no lethal dose established, you could literally take an entire bottle at once and it would not harm you. Also, supplementing with melatonin does not cause habituation or a diminished secretion from the pineal gland. Anyone saying otherwise has not done their research or have data to back up that claim.
@@JeffreyRGriese Perhaps there is an ineffective middle dose then? whenever I take more than 1 or 2mg consistently I have trouble sleeping within a week, and definitely trouble sleeping as soon as I stop taking the doses. The brain only produces around 2mg of melatonin itself. Perhaps you are right that very high doses can have good benefits, but that seems counter intuitive to me considering how little of a dose is naturally produced. I got my information from Matt walker who is a professor of neuroscience and specializes in sleep science.
@@JeffreyRGriese thank you! Yea his comments are most likely based on something he heard or read that was based on bad science. Melatonin is a miracle supplement!!
@@default2826 pls don't spread misinformation. Not ideal , but it does not do that.
Crazy dreams including nightmares!
Oddly enough, most have that issue resolved by upping their dose
Yes I also get headaches and feel like a zombie during the day
What are the effects and side effects of taking together Clonazepam (0.5 mg) + Escitalopram (5 mg) + organic Melatonin supplement?
Melatonin shrinks ovaries in rat studies.
Why not just get free light therapy by being outside in the sunshine?
People work indoors. People have allergies. And it's 100 degrees out.
@@ShowMeWhatINeedToKnow People get breaks usually. People need to repair their bodies so allergies don't bother them. In such an area employers can have misting areas in a sunny area. Temperature should not be an excuse. I'm living in Texas where there was highs of 36C and I'm not using AC or any plugged in fans.
@@lightdark00 i'm suffering from horrible anxiety where i feel like everyone is looking at me and judging me, it comes from the narcissistic abuse i endured. So while i'm recovering i can't really go outside, least i can do is get some fresh air and take melatonin.
@@rover5058 Part of recovery should be to go outside. The only issue I have is cameras all over. I have learned though, people generally do not care and are busy doing their own thing.
Im outside all day...
