  • Skincare trends can be a fun way to enhance your skincare routine while saving money, but unfortunately, not all skincare trends are created equal --- and some have the potential for causing immense harm to the skin that could take several years and thousands of dollars in treatments to reverse.
In today’s video, I am responding to a recent video by Dr. Rajani on the topic of Castor Oil. In just a few months, this video has garnered millions of views, and today I’d like to weigh in on the topic with an expert opinion as a double fellowship trained cosmetic dermatologist.

She’s providing information about *some* of the negative side effects she’s seen, and how everyone’s skin has different needs. If it works for you, great!

I am sure Dr Rajani does not believe it is the same thing or mechanism of action as botox and filler. He's just trying to offer cheaper options for people to use on their wrinkles.
Also, he did a video recently on how filler can block lymphatic flow which can negatively impact immune system and increase risk for cancer. Can you comment on this video?

    • @DrStefaniKappel
      @DrStefaniKappel  Před 3 měsíci +44

Dermal filler (HA not biostimulatory fillers) when done incorrectly (too much and in the wrong plane) could cause many issues. As a cosmetic derm I'm not a big fan of dermal fillers as I feel lasers and skin tightening treatments give more natural and longer lasting results.
I appreciate the fact that he gives cheaper alternatives but some people can misinterpret that information and take it as truth. I had a patient who applied it to her face for a little over a week and not only did it not give the same effects as botox but she broke out with cystic acne on her lower face and was in tears.

I love the perspective of both doctors. I’ve had oily skin in my T-Zone, horrible acne, cystic acne, scars etc since elementary school. I’m 50 now and the battle isn’t as bad but still there. I tried an oil based moisturizer prescribed by a dermatologist for 3 months and when I was done I started using castor oil. Both were game changers for me. My skin is no longer oily nor dry in my chin area. Last night I put on castor oil, waited a bit and then put on my makeup and went out. Normally, within an hour of putting on makeup I’m greasy looking and have to dab my face with a napkin throughout the night. But nope, not this time 😮 I’m still shocked. Castor oil seems to be minimizing my nasal labial folds and jowls as well. Great video Dr.

I think that it is important for anyone who is commenting about castor oil, needs to mention Edgar Cayce, who developed Castor Oil Packs. You did not, and I think you should add it to your show notes. It is very important that it is done as he said, many do other things than what he said to use. He was a medical intuitive, and it is important to do what he said, not what you or others think will help it only with castor oil. You have to put on the castor oil and then use clean organic WOOL flannel over the castor oil - it is the keratin in the wool that breaks down and heals tumors or cysts. You will not get that benefit with cotton or other fabrics. And then put a hot water bottle on it, not an electric pad. Many have made variations, yet it is important to do it, as he said. Thanks for listening, I have done Edgar Cayce methods to heal many things. Look him up. peace

Just found your channel and I’ve subscribed. I’ve only tried castor oil recently on a thickened and darkened skin patch on my back because it was always itchy, that area cleared up like nothing happened. It did not however clear my eye bags and dark circles the way it did for other people, it did for my friend. So yeah, I appreciate you explaining the mechanism of how castor oil can and can’t improve all skin problems. Thanks for a very informative explanation.

I love castor oil for lashes and eyebrows, for detoxing as a pack on the belly. However, I have had one of the WORST breakouts of my life after using hexane-free, cold pressed, amber glass bottled castor oil all over my face for a week. Nothing else changed in diet, routine, water intake. Cleansed before and after applying as an overnight moisturizer, clean pillowcase each night. So, I’m right on the fence for this product. I won’t stop using castor oil for other benefits, but will not go for it all over my face again. Everyone is different! ❤

Your patients who didnt have good results with their acne night have used the wrong castor oil, such as nonorganic, with hexane in it, or from a plastic bottle.
Castor oil is great for crepey skin, for arthritis inflammation.
I also think its important to use a mild abrasive cleaner on the skin at least three times per weeks, to ckean the pores.
I'm against Botox and fillers, I believe that neurotoxins should not be used in our faces. Weve all seen what fillers do to a face, distorting the shape of the face making it puffy.

Dr. already explained on several clips that oils dry out the face if they are applied alone, and that they are only applied to the face on wet skin with something like glycerine, only then the oil is applied, so the skin this way will not be dehydrated, and no more than 6 drops. So what you think about this way
(I am interested on light oils like sunflower oleic, grape oil, not castor oil) ? How I read not all oils cause chaos, but those heavy that clog pores, but ect sunflower oil does not clog pores and is quickly absorbed by the skin. I have dry skin around eyes and for now only coconut oil help me, I dont know what else nature to use I put him only around eyes. I start whit him before week or two for dry skin, but not on face is heavy for me.

I called your office a year ago to ask about skin whitening/ethnic recoloring as I get made fun of a lot for my darker skin tone and the receptionist said you do offer these bleaching procedures. Do these in-office procedures help boost collagen?

please dont bleach your skin, I understand what you're going through, I am a very darkskin Black American and was made fun of growing up. But now I look younger and better than everyone who taunted me, because my darkskin preserves my youth and turns out to be a true blessing. Please stay dark as possible trust me!!

I don't believe that people have completely ruined their skin and ended up with the long list of acne conditions you describe. There is no way anyone would continue to use the oil on their face to let it get to that degree. I'm sure most people would discontinue it's use at the first sign of pimpling.

This science nerd is glad to have found your channel. It seems like the castor oil fad comes around every few years so to have a dermatologist give sound advice is refreshing. People love a "miracle" potion that can cure everything, especially acne, but if it was really that simple then no one should ever suffer from acne again! Thanks for being the voice of reason.

Castor oil caused a massive allergic reaction on my face. I’ve used it on other parts of my body with no issues. My skin in my face turned red and bumpy and made it so sensitive to everything I subsequently put on it. Days later my skin crusted and peeled. It was terrible.

I have a serious question for you. If you could please reply it would be so greatly appreciated. This is going to be a little long winded. So I suffer from pcos. I started using bruan silk expert 5 and was getting great results but enough. So I started doing electolsis appts to get Rida the hair faster and more permanent. I told the ladies at the place how I been using IPL device they essentially laughed Al that “I wasted my money on that device.” So I resold it for half my money. Then I started hearing all this about castor oil. So I started using it & realized ppl say it makes ur hair grow in thicker and darker. Even most lash serums factually contian castor oil. I asked my electolsis lady if I should avoid areas where I have hair growth to ensure it wasn’t strengthening the root of the hair like the study I read stated. They again laughed and said this is impossible. Fast forward 6 months and now I’m growing in much more hair, much more dense and darker. I can’t help but think castor oil is to blame? Or is it that I no longer use the IPL inbwteeen electolsis sessions? Idk? But one or the other or possibly both have made tremendous differences 🤦🏼‍♀️😳😭 thoughts?

I appreciate you so much. I have been watching your videos since the beginning. You taught me how to layer my skincare. I learned from you years ago that oil is not good for our skin, nor is it going to help us with anti-aging. As soon as I stopped using it and I focused on Peptides, Vitamin C and Tretinoin, I saw a huge shift in my skin and people are always surprised at my age. I have two daughters, ages 22 and 18 and everyone thinks we are sisters! 🥰 I am the same age as you! Thank you for explaining everything in detail so that we can understand why something is or isn't good for our skin. You're amazing and your channels is amazing. I appreciate all of your hard work and your kindness. If I could afford your skincare line or some lazer treatments, I would definitely invest in it. That would be amazing, but since I can not afford to do all that, I am extremely grateful to you that I know what to look for in skincare products. There are some really amazing affordable brands out there. I have been using The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA as well as The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10%. I combine that with my Tretinoin and a great eye cream and moisturizer. I use Vitamin C during the day. I hope you have a great weekend. Happy Easter!💜💕💜🕊🦋🌻💮🌼🌹🌸

One of the few that suffered horrible effects from castor oil. I wished it worked for me, but am now on an oral antibiotic and antibiotic cream to treat the rash/dermatitis caused by placing oil on my face. I mix it with my skin cream for my arms and legs, but keep castor oil away from my face now.

What's to disagree with? The Dr's message was that for SOME individuals it is recommended to exercise caution and to perhaps consider adding an additional step of a spot test before using it on such a visible and important part of the body as our facial skin. Can you clarify for me please what's to disagree about with that? 🤔

I am the woman who’s suffering from post inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to C02 laser in my poor neck. Thank you🌹

Castor oil, and yes the tanning booth with led for face totally took away my eyelid excema. I have been binge watching Dr. Steffani's videos for 2 weeks now. I love doing red light therapy, and I do go into the sun, and the tanning booth before vacations, which really has helped my my 59 year old skin. That's all I have time for for skin care right now, but I would love to do fraxel laser treatment, but I assume I can't until my tan goes away, and I am half Mexican and German, so i feel like I might be a problem for laser therapy. My problem areas are Eye bags, and jowls. It's crazy I don't have crows feet, and I have a smooth face. My eyebags, and lids have always bothered me the most. But yes, I have combination skin, combination meaning Hispanic and Caucasian.

I’m 1 month in using a castor oil patch at night on a lipoma and it has reduced from the size of a golf ball to a grape. I also apply it liberally on my eye area making sure to get some in my eyes. There are multiple uses for castor oil all of which are safe and effective. No need to fear.
