- The Commodore Amiga is a computer close to the hearts of many retro computer fans, but as time goes on the Amigas are dying, not least because of the dreaded Varta battery leak so common in the A500+. Today we build the worlds newest Amiga. A new PCB, a new case and new upgrades will all come together to create my ultimate new Amiga.
Today we test drive the Vampire upgraded machine and see what it's capable of.

@@BrokenCircuitRanch hey there, I can certainly add them if you're interested
There is also CSS capable web browser in Coffin called NetSurf.
Earlier version could even play CZcams : czcams.com/video/Mvnsolxuh4o/video.html .
You can use FastIDE 1 speed not only 0.
Kickstart 3.1.4 is not needed , CD ROM works also with 3.10 if you use CacheCDFS.
@@BrokenCircuitRanch The terms say they will not claim even when you cancel, providing you were a subscriber at the time the video was published
Ordered a slimline SATA to FullSizeSata But my CDRom has MicroSata! Uff another style, where did you order that?
Aw I was looking forward to an RMC Nukem impression ;)
Been fun to see this come together! Booting into ST mode by accident, haha.
What an awesome selection of features in one box, I'm impressed.
Duke Nukem is trash
@@IanC14 oh boy you sure told him
HAHAH, Jack Tramiel's revenge! 😂😂😂 Atari will not be denied.
Sadly as history has pointed out, using a brand of something at work or school means more than likely you will start to use that brand or something very similar at home. See IBM PC-compatibles and to a somewhat lesser extent, the Apple ][e.
I'm crying with laughter at TOS on the screen.
"I turned on my brand new Amiga and it booted as an Atari ST".
I had a nightmare like that once!
I bootcamped my friends mac to boot windows vista... he wasn't impressed as he couldn't figure out how to switch it back lol.
@@wishusknight3009 What...I don't understand! he didn't like the upgrade? ;-)
@@daishi5571 He has never used a windows machine in his life. Once i got him to go to my place to log my computer in so I could remote in while on vacation. And even over the phone he was in a panic trying to figure out how to click to enter a password. So this was a bit upsetting to him to say the least. I left him like that for a couple days and he actually figured out how to use a web browser to get to MSN.... and that was it.
Great stuff! I laughed my a$$ off at it booting as an ST at the start!
VERY FUNNY!!!
It kinda looks like an ST , but not quite..
icons /color are not quite the same ,
But hey , as long as you guys can make fun of the ST huh? :-)
No bad feelings , i've had both(Amiga 500 with mem expansion) , but the ST(e) is an underappreciated machine!
Too bad there are not a lot of games making use of the blitter chip of those versions.
@@eurocrusader1724 looks like a TT desktop to me. we all know the amiga was superior but i like many had an st and loved it to bits.
@@eurocrusader1724 It's not the standard TOS/GEM - it is MultiTOS - a modern rewrite
@@eurocrusader1724 Yeah, don't get me wrong! I love the ST and Amiga! Amiga was certainly more capable at games imho, but the ST has a certain charm with some great games to boot!
I just finished my Amiga 500 ++ few days ago and it's great !!! Thank you Peepo !
Fantastic 4 part series *RMC*.
A real pleasure to see this beast come to full life.
THis brought back so many fond memories. I was the SysOp for the Tampa Bay Amiga Group [T-BAG] You may have heard of us. We ran the only Multi-Line BBS Using an A-2000 tied to a Sun Unix system. We have hundreds of PD files on Floppies that have languished in a back room for years. Best of luck to you in your continued builds.
Amazing video Neil. I felt your pain and frustration at the beginning of the video; I too have had many a day like that. Glad you got it all working in the end. The end result is one fantastic Amiga!
Nicely done Neil. Thanks for sharing when things don’t go well. I’d a similar crappy day in the lab last week, but it always works out with a bit of perseverance. What a fabulous setup.
Oh man, I love the delivery of the slight 'booting into' problem. Made my day!
Very nicely done - not just the awesome Amiga / Vampire / Checkmate build, but just the video production itself a well. very very well done, awesome pro job. :)
I like your cable management, very 90's authentic . Brilliant series and what an amazing machine, thanks
Fair play Neil, made me laugh for a fair bit., but you took it on the chin with the utmost humility.
"I Just turned the lights off and went home!" - LMAO!
Great video as always and a fantastic start to the end episode of the Worlds Newest Amiga series.
Top man!
Amazing work, as usual! Thanks @RetroManCave
Dude that's so awesome you got the CD drive working!
This machine really is quite beautiful, well done!
Wait, if I build this and hold down the fire button on boot, I get an Atari ST? Sold!
Lol no you dont, you just need to buy a vampire and install coffin for that :)
I love this system and you're bringing back fond memories with the Public Domain discs! Fantastic, you've inspired me to dig out some PD discs too! :)
Literally at the point RMC said "enable turtle mode" my computer froze for a few seconds- LOL (common occurrence- no worries). Speaking of LOL, I had to pause the video for several seconds at the part where the Amiga turned into an Atari. Vampires really *are* evil. :D
Always fun to see Eric Schwartz's old animations pop up, especially in an appropriate environment such as their native Amigas.
It doesn't matter how many times I see a Vampire in action, it's never failed to amaze me how powerful it is! And the Checkmate case works so well with it, too!
"The reason I gave up on the Amiga was I could not get it to reliably write a CDR, this was before they had mechanisms to continue after an interruption as they have now. I wish I had just put all my stuff away instead of selling it all off for peanuts.
I’ve still have my Amiga stuff. Big boxed games, PD disks, joysticks and joypads, magazines, cover disks and CDs. The list goes on.
And the 1200, 1500, 500 and CD32.
Similiar issues are not unheard of from early PC CD-writers as well, at least until perfectly dialed in.
Really great to see you do this! Well done.
What a great series. I wish I had time to take on this project too - I'd love to resurrect my Amiga days. Thank you!
A wonderful ending to this series Neil. Looking forward to seeing more of this machine in future vids. Cheers.
Incredible build and wonderful series RMC! The Atari ST Easter Egg is hilarious. I didn't know about that. Awesome skills building this beast from scratch. Congrats on a job well done and enjoy this amazing Amiga!
Nice work, impressive results and great music from Fury of the Furries. Thank you for this
That CD drive has a level of CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY that would make Krazy Ken proud.
It was well worth the effort and you got it there in the end. It's a beautiful setup, wonderful to see the amalgam of vintage and modern. And the Atari boot up was priceless, I wish I had seen your face at the time! 😄
It certainly seems to have been putting you through the mill lately, but wow, is it worth it! It's a very impressive machine indeed, and I look forward to seeing more if what it can do, and more upgrades/fettling.
COMPLIMENTI,hai fatto un computer da paura,e uno dei più belli A500 che si siano visti, sia esteticamente che tecnicamente.un AMIGA veramente all'avanguardia, sei un grande, ciao.
If I'd put all that effort into building an amiga and it booted as an st, it would now be in pieces decorating my garden.
Bloody Amazing !!!!! Very good video series
Great serie, and respect for the building and the video's :D
Very nice project, Bravo man!
I always enjoy your wacky adventures, Neil. Having been a computer tech for so many years, I can relate to your misery...your video reminds my why i'm happy to be outta that vocation. Great stuff man!
Lovely case. Great video thanks
I did enjoy this series, thank you!
Great video, glad the Dvd player worked out in the end! 👍 😉
I believe the way you looked at the screen when it booted into that ST desktop the first time must have been priceless... 😳😳😳🤣
Re: Bootings as an Atari ST. Oh my word, that must have been a very confusing and extremely frustrating problem, whoever spotted that needs a medal. We've all been there with seemingly problem after problem only to be nearly defeated by a problem that had a very simple solution. Your head must have been spinning.
This is amazing and makes me happy ... Well done... You x
This computer is a true craft a real mastership it,s not only for play old games ... This is the system just I was waiting for .... upload more videos with more accesories for the Amiga.
Would love to see Geoff Crammond's F1 Grand Prix running on that beast :)
Oh man, I'd never heard of Nightlong. A point-n-click I've missed, and a cyberpunk one to boot!
And a Team17 game at that!
A thing of beauty, as long as you keep the cover on ;-) Well done Neil.
What an amazing work you've done there! I bet this beauty would sell like bread, if produced. I like to imagine you guys could get together and create a top of the line, modern Amiga and bring the system back on the market. I would be your first customer :)
Wonderfull series, I will be doing a similar thing, though using an Amiga 2000. I must say it's a great time to be a retro computer user with so much information being fairly easily available, compared to when these machines were new :)
I see a copy of Amiga Format! I (a US resident) subscribed to AF only a few issues before it ceased to be an Amiga magazine and became Linux Format.
OMG LMAO. I would have loved to see your expression when it booted as an Atari ST 🤣 10/10 for perseverance. Brilliant
Brilliant! awesome series !
Any video that includes the Fury of the Furries Lagoon theme (sometimes mislabelled Forest) gets a solid thumbs up from me.
Same same!
Love the excited little face at 5:13 :D
The Simulant Box, never heard of it. Have one now. Thanks !
Great series !
This build looked very rewarding. Excellent stuff Neil. Don't ever hold down fire on boot again... too bizarre...
This is beyond Awesome... Cheers! I'm Jelly over this... wish I had one!
This is what I call a piece of art!!! KUDOS!!
Great vid, thanks for pointing out where the HD LED need to go onto the SD IDE board. Was wondering where to get that header.
That was entertaining. You met your match a few times in that build, but perseverance and a great community paid dividends.
Let's talk about cable management though, I can see now why I haven't gotten my Agnus back yet! 😋 #FreeTDOsAgnus
[...] always one more thing, one more upgrade [...]" You know, I think that's one of the biggest draws (to me, as far as those I can speak for) to building your own computer, both retro and modern. There's no end to the things you can do with them, the purposes you can build them for, and I think that's what makes computing so unique as a hobby. I'll have to go back through and watch the previous entries in this series, but I'm already excited to watch the whole thing unfold :D
I bet that Atari boot thing had u stumped for a bit so
Funny 😂 great video
Atari FTW ;)
Beautiful build RMC. I wish we could do the same thing in the ST scene. Maybe one day...
Love this channel...
I remember a friend having a few really, really good CDs that came with an Amiga mag. CD32 only I'm guessing. The CDs had tons of demo games. Some were full mini type games but were bloody addictive! They had a ton of music samples for using with a tracker program, which we would spend hours on end making our own little tunes. Ohhh the days !
I had an A1200 with 2 CD drives and it was glorious!
@@daishi5571 Very nice!
I can't believe that until now I believed that RTG meant "Real Time Graphics"... I can't even remember when I first heard it, but it didn't ever think about checking since... Thanks for correcting my 20+ years mistake!
Great video and highly recommended simulant I have a rare Amstrad NC200 floppy gotek conversion kit from them and it works amazingly well
Despite your anti-Atari bias, I have been enjoying your videos so much that I have become an Official Cave Dweller. :-)
Thank you Hamish! We'll get to some more Atari kit soon, they are after all what Amiga grew out of
@@RMCRetro In all seriousness, it does make me laugh now about all the "rivalry" given how much interchange there was between staff and ownership of Atari and Commodore. I suppose it is just because humans are naturally tribal. Anyway - it is nice to see all this stuff together with a clearer look and a fuller picture. I look forward to much more to come :-)
now this is awesome, this is likely going to prompt me to build my own Check Amiga mate 500.
Very very nice mate I love the Amiga computers used to have a a500 then a600 then the a1200 they was great used to love super frog and project X I think it was called love what you built it looks amazing hope to see more videos in this at some stage
I have enjoyed watching this series. And promptly dug my Amiga 500 out of the loft to remove the battery. Then discovered that no on board battery but is on the memory expansion board, so removed that battery which was showing signs of starting to leak and that two wires came of the expansion board that go to a riser socket although i do not know what they are for i will have to solder them back on.
Thank`s for this video which has inspired me to get to work on my old computers of which i have many.
Love the build... In a future episode, please show some nice cable management. A OCD thing. . 😀
I'd love to see how it runs Lightwave ;)
Great final build Neil. That was playing doom far smoother than my 386DX ever did. I'd argue that's on par with a mid 486dx perhaps? Doom was a low res minimised slide show on a 386.
An alternative to the title could be "Help! I've accidentally built an atari ST!"
In a Amiga case
That was quite a story to start with, the RMC Amiga series of unfortunate events leading too Atari !!! At least it turned out well in the end. I still long for an Amiga that can be used as a modern day machine with all the bells and whistles, I guess we can only dream.
Hi @RetroManCave. Great project and video ! I wish i had budget and time to do the same... this is amazing.
No time and money for this so i'm simply going to make a cheaper FPGA amiga into an A600 case, which is far better than emulation, and keep my good old A500 in a box in memory of my teen age :-)
I just notice that in your video description you forgot to mention one of the musics you used in the video : Forest by Frédéric "Elmobo" Motte (music from the game Fury of the Furries on Amiga).
Good choice this is an great video game sound track ;-)
It is a great system. so many emulated systems - great for archiving and using software from all systems
This is hilarious! Must have felt like you were cursed ;)
Would love to build something like this, this would take me back to when when i had my first AST Laptop Computer and the computer that got me into programming, the IBM PC 360. My parents got me my first computer in 91' and i haven't looked back since, maybe its time to rebuild my old systems.
If I had the money I'd love to work with an Amiga. Never grew up with them since I'm too young to have, but retro hardware that is extremely upgradeable and customizable just sounds so appealing.
Really enjoyed this series and watching the whole build take shape,as for cable management don't worry my main computer looks like an explosion in a spaghetti factory but it works 😂
Great video as always, I've kited my A500 witch wicher- build video is on my channel, a lot of fun too, but you did way better. Congratulations!
I love these aesthetic but I’d love it more if it supported graphics cards that weren’t just the blower style. There’s enough space between the bottom of the case and where a card would sit and with those risers you could add ventilation and a set of magnetic filters for a standard GPU.
Very nice work. I realy would like to have a in detail ShapeShifter video.
What a nice system! I am really looking forward to getting my Vampire - my A500 in my Checkmate case is patiently waiting for it...
I am curious if the ZorroII slot will work with a Vampire installed - I have heard differing opinions on that.
Amigastic retro-present journey, thank you RMC....! 😊
Somewhere out there in a parallel Universe,
Beyond IBM Compatibles.
Beyond Apple PC.
Amiga is King... 👾🎉
Woo! Fury of the Furries! A friend had a number of .mod files on his shell box of the day (1997ish) and had a number of of the zone BGMs for Fury of the Furries. My first experience to MOD/IT/X3M was thanks to him and that game.
Good job you didn't have your "Atari ST cupboard" at the time. That thing may have found itself placed oh-so-gently in it 😆
Imaging booting up windows 7 and being greeted by mac os.. That'd fuck my day up! lol
Amazing to see quake running on an Amiga.
For the IDE situation, look at the KA 60 Dual Port IDE adapter. You might also want to divide up the ribbon cable into smaller groups and bundle them up to make it easier to manage.
I felt a bit mean offering some small criticisms on one of the previous videos in this series (was disappointed no floppy drive planned at the time) - but so glad to see the final result. It wouldn't be an Amiga 500 without a Floppy Drive, and I love the front layout with (non-tray) CD ROM alongside. Great work, amazing stuff!
You forgot it has floppy emulator under base unit (Hx?)
OMG that noise then of the case going on, so 80's sound of working on computers xD.
Nice. Had no idea about Vampire emulating Atari ST.
Black case, mouse and Gotek would look so much better in combination with black monitor and (almost) black keyboard. You also need a black desk. :)
Amazing finish of the project there.
So is the Checkmate your new favourite Amiga?
Hahahaha i hate days like that. I was an Electrical Engineer for a big automotive company in a former life. I can remember having been called to a machine because the barcode scanner wasnt working..... 6hrs later and loads of my hair (which i had at the time) pulled out.... realised that something had fell off the machine inside the guards and was just say lying on the ctrl key on the keyboard.... school boy error...needless to say i made a totally new fault up when i reported it...but me and the lad who was working on the machine still talk and laugh about it to this day lol
Very jealous of that machine and the time and skills it must have taken to build plus the price of all the gear. Would love a standalone vampire that could do all of this without needing to build all the gear for it to sit in.
You need to try Alien Breed 3D 2 on that beast, patched one. Even WinUAE needs major tweaking to run it full speed. ;)
Terrific!!!
