What's the Coolest Japanese Computer? 🎌 | Rare, Exotic, Popular and Odd Retro Tech
Back in the days we did he right thing and ripped out all the pc board things and converted it to an Amiga :D
This was a PC I'd have sold my soul for as a kid!
i started my pc fun with an SC 3000 an i had a tape deck that i stored data on an games that i made with BASIC it was the coolest thing id ever seen lol
As an interesting side note, Egyptian (ex Kuwaiti) company Al Alamiah also brought out the AX-660 and AX-990 in 1992. Both were MSX 1 computers even though MSX 2 and 2+ already existed. Both systems had integrated MegaDrive clones and you could switch between MSX mode and MegaDrive mode.
Really interesting system. I look forward to part 2.
Ever get this running NetBSD? NetBSD 10.0 in 2024? 🤔
Replace ALL the electrolytic capacitors in this bad boy. Something this difficult to obtain screams preemptive strike! Why wait for them to fail? Aluminum polymer capacitors should prove fine for most spots and IF you decide to stick with straight electrolytic caps some conformal coating to reduce damage from leaking capacitors is a solid idea.
this is REMARKABLE. Do you think once the project has been completed that the files will be available to others to attempt?
For those wondering, no Americans at least don't know why everywhere in the UK sounds like its a place in Middle Earth.
Over 20 years ago..around the new 21st century..i first saw a clone of this in Beige in a games store in Notting hill west London..i remember it had MegaPC on it..a little Google search shows it was made by Amstrad...it's Alan Sugar again...copying the competition...it was a bargain price of about 500 pounds if i recall..never seen one since except photos..same 386 processor as this Tera Japanese version..a collectors item nowadays
I can tell you what’s wrong with it: it’s got SEGA on it. Next…
It sure is pretty. I’d absolutely love to play MegaCD Lunar on this in a room full of cigarette smoke and laserdiscs.
a historic beauty everyone wants in his collection, you did a really great job, fantastic!!!
Also, the SMD caps on the drive will start to leak at some point for sure, they all do on that kind of drive.
thanks for all you do ! one day I'll come to hug you !
So basically...this is a WannaBe Amiga (which is a True Computer and Console at the same time)
Ah, the good old times where "compatibility" meant slapping the entire processor of the guest device in an expansion card and hooking that wholesale to the host
In related news: has somebody tried to make the CD drive compatible with the Sega Mega CD add-on? And what about the 32X?
I remember seeing these back in the ‘90s when I was living in Asia. I was around 9-10 yrs old and had an Mega Drive. Owning one was the ultimate dream at the time since PCs weren’t common for home use yet. I was familiar with PCs and DOS games because I saw them in the office where my dad worked. Back then, PCs were all beige, and most didn’t even have CD drives or sound cards yet. So, seeing such a modern-looking, cool black PC with a matching monitor made by Sega that could also play Sega cartridges was unreal.
reminds me of the Amstrad Mega PC. I have one of them in my collection. Weird thing but absolutely cool.
Didn't we get some form of sega pc in the UK? I remember way back when, Argos catalogue (remember them?!) had a Mega PC of some sort?!
looking forward to the repair video :D
I picked the best time to become a Patreon :D
well, you said it yourself, 5 years late, so i skipp this, but hanks
LOL IT WAS A POS AND TOO EXPENSIVE
ABOMINATION!
@16:06 - I wonder, could you "PC-link" w/ a copy(ies) of Zero Tolerance (similarly to "console-linking" on a [sole] Genesis / Mega-Drive consoles, with the before-stated game)? 🤔 Also, looking forward to Part ✌😎!
Hey Neil, i don't suppose you've got a RAM Music Machine for the ZX Spectrum? apparently Aphex Twin used it in his music back in the day which is awesome.
I don’t have one of these no, sounds fun
This board is weird! Your typical Mega Drives never had a discrete YM3438. Neither did I ever see a fine pitch DIP 68HC00 made by Toshiba, or an SOIC/SOP Z80! The regular consoles originally had the huge standard DIP NMOS CPUs, and then switched to PLCC for the 68k and QFP for the Z80.
Apparently Amstrad had an upgrade for the Mega PC called the Mega PC Plus, which used an 80486 processor and had a RAM upgrade. That's probably the rarest Megadrive PC.
I think Sonic 1 and 2 will play just fine if you use the PAL carts as long as they fit--there isn't a significant difference in the ROMs. You should probably get a Japanese controller to display it with though--that PAL red start button jumped out at me immediately 😁(Japanese controllers have blue start buttons and the 6-button controller actually has smaller grips--everything else is the same though).
For arcade cabinets, Computer Space, Pong, Space Invaders, Pac Man, Tempest, and Tron. I'd pick differently if the actual gameplay were the overriding factor, but Tron and Tempest would easily cross over.
very cool, I miss Sega and arcade gaming
Wait, this video is from two days ago? I thought this was released a while back!
Interesting that they used an AMD 286.
I’m in the U.S. and am sad they never brought it here because I would have gobbled up that system like candy apples in black no less!
Obviously outside the scope of a museum, but it would be really interesting if it were possible to reverse engineer this and/or the Amstrad and see if it wouldn't be possible to make a 486 version of this concept. That would've been the ultimate early 90s machine.
awesome content, as good as LGR, Subscribed!, Cant wait for part 2!
Mega Drive is a much better name than Genesis. Unfortunately their hands were tied, because there was a computer company in the US that had already trademarked the name (Mega Drive Systems).
Looks like they really could have invested in a Steadicam for those recorded scenes. A lot of wobble whenever the camera is moving around
I remember Agon from the TV series F Truup!
thanks , I live is the United States , be Barely had any cassette tapes , we had mostly floppy Disks . I did see a lot imports converted Tape Games to One Single File on to a Disk which were multiple Single file games on a Floppy 5.25 disk from the UK and other parts of Europe . that was the only way too see U.K. games for the most part . well from the Pirate Scene that is .. for US it was the only Option , although we had a Slight problem playing the imported games because of the PAL / NTSC issues some played fine , some played Fast , some would just hang , some would not at all run .. the the simple consequences of importing of a PAL game running on a NTSC Computer .. its how American / Canadian kids got too see UK/Europe Games converted Tape too Floppy Disk
A mister fpga core would be awesome
As a product, Gun4IR still Trumps Sinden I think. Though Sinden making it in to commercial products is the real key. I'm all for the out-of-the-box experience and still hopeful that Namco/Sega will get involved with Sinden for a legit commercial product. As it is, I'm very happy with an Aimtrak IR set up that is plug & play with PS2. Doesn't work for all games, but I don't need much more than TC2 and Gunfighter 2. 😂
Just use a MiSTer and you will be fine.
3:24 - 2 CPU, 1UP.
I have the same grey jumper.
Saw one on sale as a kid, in 1997, but seeing as I was on holiday it would have been impossible to haul back. I was 12 and here I see people not knowing about this, 30 years later, to my great surprise. I wish more people would have paid attention back then, like a few of us did, when it came to games :(
I remember first discovering this out of random during when I starting to collect for the Genesis and looking up what good game are available and founded this out of nowhere. Although something worth noting in regards to the Expansion slot, I remembered that someone did disassembled a Mega CD to get it working on the Terradrive. Idk if the video is still there or not.
As always a very stiff narration. Always to the point. Never a smile or a laugh. Always informative and entertaining none the less.
Really interested if any software from the PC side could trigger the 68000 or the z80 or vice-versa. Using the megadrive FM from the PC side is very appealing also. Same for some common data storage area. A 386 DX would be perfect.
