I have had some Young Coconuts with clear water, and today, I opened one with brown water. Is brown bad? It didn't smell right, so I tossed it.

Normally, I buy coconuts when I'm at Whole Foods Market and they usually already have the top cut off and all I need to do is to cut the membrane to get the juice.
Why are those coconuts shaped like that with a pointed top?
I also wondered about this, as I have recently consumed quite a bit of coconuts (green, baby), and feel its a shame that I can't do anything with that shell. I guess you can buy something like a wood chipper to cut up the coconut, and add it to your compost pile, but I could be wrong.
