@@AdamG1983 That's because it's a $45K van that gets stomped on by the base model of every other minivan you could buy. The Metris passenger van is just about the worst value new vehicle that money can buy in the United States. It's a truly mediocre minivan with a premium minivan price tag. The only reason to use it as the basis of a luxury conversion is to be able to slap Maybach logos on it. If you did the same conversion to a Kia Carnival, the resulting product would be better than this Metris conversion, but as the K900 proved, Kia badges and real luxury are not a winning combination.

    • @MikeDiscusses

The thing is, he compared the metris to normal minivans like the carnival or odyssey or sienna, the purpose of the metris is not the same as those. Yes it’s a van but it’s designed for commercial use. For things like airport shuttle service, so it makes sense that it doesn’t have all those creature comforts designed for family use. True, the price is a bit steep but it’s in line with other vans designed for the same purpose

It’s actually based on the commercial-grade Metris (Vito elsewhere), not on the passenger-grade V class. They have different rear windows. I can’t understand why Mercedes doesn’t just bring V classes to the US; they are nice vans (Americans might even call them minivans ;-)

    • @sir_booty_cakes

They don’t because of the Chicken tax that was implemented decades ago, this would fall into it and adds a 25% price hike on it. Most euro car makers make little trucks that would compete here like the VW amarok, but because of that chicken tax we don’t see them.

The opening rear window is optional on the V-Class. The base trim level comes with the same rear window as the Vito . Proudly designed in Turkey:) The reason why this is so luxurious is that we have super high tax rates for cars but reasonable taxes for commercial vehicles. This vehicle would cost around same price as an entry level c class in Turkey. Compared to a s class, it is 4 times cheaper that even the base model s class. We have around 150 percent tax for 1.6 liters engine and around 290 percent tax for anything bigger than 2 liters. This van get only 25 percent tax. I don't know if this van has it but there are conversion vans with ultra luxurious air suspensions which cost around 15k in Turkey.

The V-Class gets much better interior, options, engines and looks a lot more modern (from the inside atleast). Note that he didn't cover the ride quality for the passengers, just that it's even worse for the driver than a regular Metris, and that it still handles like a garbage scow. The Metris is essentially a cargo van, and if it's known for its ride quality, it's because it's not very good. You would end up with a better luxury minivan conversion using almost any other minivan on the market as a starting point. This is still a 208hp minivan that gets only 20mpg combined running on premium fuel. The Toyota Sienna makes about 245hp from a hybrid power train and gets a massive 36mpg (fantastic for a minivan). The Kia Carnival makes 290hp from a big V6 and gets 22mpg on regular gas. Both of those vans have a reputation for having a pretty nice ride quality from the factory, sometimes even described as "luxurious". They're also cheaper than a Metris as a starting point for a conversion. This company basically took the worst minivan money can buy in North America, slapped a luxury interior in it and a vertical barred grill, all so they could slap Maybach logos on something that is decidedly not a Maybach. Seriously, those badges are lame, and I can't believe Mercedes was cool with that, even if they do appear to have only made 8 of them.
