This was an eye opener for me and has me reconsidering retiring to Mexico. It seems the private hospitals are the way to go but the costs can be exorbitant. You never hear this from expat channels. Seems I may as well stay here and deal with deductibles/copays. Thank you for this information

The majority of retirees return to their home countries due to health care costs. Emergency hospitalizations can end up costing thousands of dollars. Some have lost their entire savings. Many swear by their travel evacuation policies to return them to their home countries in emergency situations. The reality is, you have to be stabilized before you can be back to your home country. These policies have loopholes! Many hospitals will not admit you unless you pay upfront. Or allow you to leave before paid in full. With pre existing conditions, private healthcare coverage is very expensive, and at retirement age are most likely not covered. Ever.

@@Malibu_Merle So many people’s dreams of retirement in Mexico is no longer an option. Many keep their Medicare to return to the states for non emergency care/treatments. But if you don’t have a place to live… well, I don’t have to tell you how expensive it would be to rent a place during, possibly months of recovery! And it’s not easy to rent something without a lease, AND paying first, last month, plus deposit.

How does Travel Insurance work that I hear lots of nomads use. Especially if we stick to temporary residence rather than Permanent? Thank you.

Retirement planners have been telling people for a lot of years that they need to have about $100,000 saved to meet their Medicare co-pays, fees, deductibles, medicines, etc in retirement. Add to that the fact that Medicare is BROKE in 4 years. It never collected enough anyway, and healthcare costs have been increasing 9% every year, COMPOUNDED, for many years now.
That would probably get you through retirement in MX, with careful planning. I have a friend who was an emergency doc in the states, and surgical nurse wife, who have decided to forego Medicare, and save & invest their Medicare premiums & Part B supplement cost, and self-insure. I have decided to do that myself, and private insurance gets VERY expensive over time.
As an idea of cost, I fell and broke my wrist in 3 places, needed two plates and screws in it, 1 night in the hospital, all anesthesia & drugs, and 2-3 aftercare visits. All told, it cost me, inc transportation, x-rays, splint, brace, etc, about $5000 US. Not too bad.

@@danielsshepherd228 I wouldn't call a "stabilization policy" a "loophole". The liability to the transporter is enormous if the person isn't stabilized. I wouldn't take on that responsibility, either. Every benefit comes with conditions, right?

Some pacific Medicare Advantage Plan C covers you in Mexico: As in the summary of benefits (SOB) Emergency care $100 copay ($0 copay for emergency care outside
the United States) per visit. If you are admitted to the
hospital within 24 hours, you pay the inpatient
hospital copay instead of the Emergency Care copay.
See the “Inpatient Hospital Care” section of this
    booklet for other costs.
Urgently needed services $40 copay ($0 copay for urgently needed services
outside the United States) per visit

One thing to remember about Mexico (and I say this from 50 years experience), is that the MX gov't tends to make grand announcements about changes to come (about anything, not just health care), but don't do much advance preparation to transition to the new system!
And closely related... Many systems that need replacement parts (like a pump for a public well providing water for a municipality), the replacements parts aren't bought ahead of time, they are ordered ONLY WHEN THEY BREAK/FAIL... And it could be 3-4 weeks before the pump comes.
Such is Mexico. And many other countries with marginal health systems.

That's why it's important to eat right and exercise. If you go vegan, you hardly have to worry about cartographic illnesses. I am not talking about people who call themselves vegans when it's convenient, but eat meat, eggs and dairy when it isn't convenient, they are not vegans, I am talking about a lifestyle. You don't worry about these things. You get to sleep well. You have lots of energy.

Yes I agree to a certain degree...I eat healthy as well. But I know several people some related that are total vegan and they are over weight eating to many carbs on vegan diet. Plus you can't help if you inherit certain things from your parents.

People are talking from experience. It seems strange that he is so negative about the government's insurance. It is in his best interest to bad mouth the government insurance. I find it a little suspicious when someone does this kind of thing.
