I will speak from experience here. While house sitting in Spain, I passed out at the computer. I came around right away but the wife and I decided that I needed to visit the local hospital in Alicante. Well, long story short after almost a week in ICU, I left with a new souvenier from Spain, a pacemaker. Thank God, I had Travel Insurance. I used a different company than your video is about but that is not the point. Folks listen to Jen and Stevo and get travel insurance before you leave your home country. Take a look at what they have to say.

That sounds like such a scary experience! We're so glad you're okay! Totally agree, no matter which plan you go with, whether travel insurance or more comprehensive health insurance, it's good to be covered. When I had to have unexpected surgery in Thailand I was so happy to be covered by insurance. Thanks for sharing your experience!

We are traveling for the next 4-6 years between Mexico and Argentina, and maybe SE Asia. We are healthy, 56 and 61, we hit the gym and do long walks and eat a plant based diet.
Health insurance or not….either way there is a risk. We have decided to pay out of pocket. If insurance is say $400/month for us, that’s $4800/year….10 years is $48,000. All of the cities we are traveling to have pretty low costs for even big events. A major heart attack may cost $10,000-$20,000.
We instead have savings and continue to add to it. AND , our savings account never denies our claims !
In the meantime we get physicals, check ups, and regular blood panels, to make sure we stay in good shape.
Everyone has to decide what is right for them.

Thank you for sharing this. First off, your upcoming journey sounds incredible! We spent six months in South America in 2023 and met so many people like you doing big trips across the continent and having awesome adventures! Regarding insurance, we 100% agree that you have to do what feels right for you. We also set aside money for routine care such as physicals, annual check-ups, dental appointments, etc. Those things are much more affordable in other countries. For example, we just got excellent dental cleanings in Panama for $25 each. I (Jen) need to have annual check-ups related to my endometriosis. I've done them in Thailand, Malaysia, and Albania over the past four years and have never paid more than a couple hundred dollars out of pocket for a visit which included multiple ultrasounds and seeing the gynecologist. We like having travel insurance to cover big, unforeseen medical emergencies, but for preventative care, we pay out of pocket and go as needed. This works for us, but everyone needs to decide what they are comfortable with and the risk/benefit for their circumstances, especially if you have pre-existing conditions that may not be covered by any insurance. Wishing you both all the best and maybe we'll see you on the road!

Fund your HSA accounts. That gets overlooked. I am here in Mexico and I do not see the value in paying a premium when I have funded my healthcare ahead of time.

That's interesting to hear. We haven't used HSA accounts and don't know much about them. Are you able to use the money in your HSA accounts abroad? We were under the impression that you could only use that money for healthcare in the US.

I have no health insurance here in the USA ,even when I did have coverage in reality I still had no coverage. Thanks to the greatest health-care system in the world I lost my peripheral vision because of poor quality health-care.

Great video. I can tell dude is really smart.
    What insurance did you choose?
Not sure but I’m just on tourist visas. So every 2-4 months I buy a new travel insurance policy for the country’s I’m going. But looking into real policy. But I like emergency evacuation coverage since I’m in Asia.

Thanks! Agreed, dude is really smart.
We currently have SafetyWing. We like that it automatically renews every month so we don't need to worry about buying a new policy while we travel around to different countries. Where are you traveling in Asia? We miss it over there!

Watched your older video and this update is awesome! We plan to travel for a year across Asia/Europe (from US) wanted to ask:
    1. What E-sims do you use
    2. Have you/do you recommend porting your US number with Google voice for calls?

    • @Twocantravel
      @Twocantravel  Před 7 měsíci +1

We're so glad it was helpful!
      1. We usually get local physical SIM cards in every country when we arrive. The eSIM company GIGAGO gifted us a 1GB eSIM last year which was helpful when we first arrived in Peru late night. Then I blew it all on Reddit in 1 hour because I am dumb and didn't realize how it worked lol. We'll probably stick with physical SIMs tbh because of the price difference and it's easy enough to get local SIM cards everywhere you go.
      2. We have not ported our US numbers and haven't used Google voice. We kept our US numbers on WhatsApp though. Hope that's helpful info!
