Janita Poe i agree with you. One drop rule was racist. In the case you’re talking about where two siblings look different even though they share the same mix, they’re obviously equal, raised in the same culture. Unfortunately some people will choose to treat them differently just based on how they look. That’s what I was trying to say before. For instance my dad looks very dark compared to his other mixed siblings who look totally white. Some people assumed they weren’t even related. At the end of the day we all deserve the same respect, love and access to opportunities. I hope our children grow up
      In a better world.

  • @lerinjensen8938

You should get one of your brothers to take a test. Ancestry traces autosomal DNA, which is like a composite of all your DNA. As opposed to mitochondrial which traces your mother's lineage all the way back through her mother's mother's mother, so on and so forth. Y-dna does the same for men.
Anywho, men actually pass on slightly more DNA to their daughters than their sons, and as such men will have slightly more of their mother's DNA than their fathers. The reason for this is that the X chromosome has about 28,000 cells (and cells may not be the term I'm looking for, but you get the point), whereas the Y chromosome only has about 17,000. So men can get about 2% more of their mother's DNA, because they are not getting as much from their father.
Okay, so my point was that autosomal DNA is a composite of all your DNA. But we all get different parts and amounts of each of our parents genes. If your mother is, indeed, Irish and Black, you may have gotten 30% of her Irish DNA and 20% of her black DNA. Your brother, on the other hand, could've got 40% of her black DNA and 10% of her Irish, making your brother, technically, more black than you. All that, despite you guys having the same parents and sharing 50% of your DNA.
I hope this all made sense and was useful. Also, try out Prometheus. My bf used it with his 23andme results. I think it's like $8. It's got some cool info

Your results make a lot of sense. Your dad is white and your mom might be 50/50. So your black percentage was predictable. I think your mom might be the more interesting test subject. As far as the indian component Ive seen ssooooo many ancestry results were people were shocked they had no indian in them. The theory goes that to cover up the shame of rape in slavery days many would say they had indian in them but they were actually just biracial. Nevertheless its always valuable to know were your roots are from.

Why would anyone that finds out they have white in them automatically assume rape??? Not saying that none were but I'm sure their were more that were not than what people think. Also, why would anyone try to tell this girl that she was not what she said she was? Why would anyone care? She's a human being and very lovely. When people talk about ancestors I always say I have a mix of everything and I'm sure the majority of us do. I know why many people want to think they have Native American in them because then you feel that you are native! You feel like no matter what you are supposed to be here! We all feel that way! I'm white but I'm sure I'm mixed with enough other that just being white or being just black is not easy for anyone to say!

    • @colishaharris613
      @colishaharris613 Před 8 lety +26

Denise Dspain It's not necessarily assumed that white ancestry always came about via rape, but the good majority of it was. Even in "consensual" relationships at that time, there was an unequal balance of power where black women really had little choice but to go along to get by. Most of us aren't proud of that history so it's downplayed and denied.

I did 2 DNA tests...the first one was that one that George Lopez used on his late night talk show with some of his guests--I can't remember the name of it now--it's been so many years now. The 2nd one I did was with "23 and Me"....Although the ancestry info was similar with both tests (give or take 1 or 2 percentage points), I found that the "23 and Me" test was better, because it broke it down a little bit more for me and "23 and Me" also provides a medical component, where you can see if you have the BRACA gene, for instance, which determines your cancer risks, etc. My percentages show that I'm approx. 43.8% African, 49.9% European, 5.5% Asian and 0.8% "Unassigned". I basically say that "I'm Black & White". I appear ambiguous, but since I'm from Latin America, with a Latin surname and culture, I'm simply considered "Hispanic", which is not a race--I KNOW!!! ...but if you googled "Hispanic" and clickd on "Images" the general look of a "Hispanic" would look like me! ...Simple as that!! lol ...But even Phenotype is subjective to people....some will say I look black....some will say I look Italian...some will say I look Filipino...some people, at my job will call me "that white lady"....but most will say I look "Hispanic" ...I KNOW IT'S NOT A RACE....but you interpret that as you wish!! lol

I remember either watching a video or reading an article where it explained that we only get a certain portion of DNA from our parents/ancestors ethnicity pool, which won't completely be reflected in our own DNA results.
Apparently it's why when siblings do this test, that the results may come back with different percentages of ethnicities, or one sibling may have inherited different variation of ethnicities, compared to their other siblings.
I've not explained it very well, but there may be Native American within your family tree, but you just may not have inherited it.

When they talk about mixed people they're talking about first degree ethnicity so in whole they mean like the country you or your family were born in LAST or the ethnicity your family LASTLY identified as so therefore when two people meet with two different ethnicities they both last identified as, then the child becomes mixed. YES everyone is mixed because we are all human and came from one starting place BUT we all spread out and experienced different things and look different ways, THIS WHOLE MIXED PROCESS i explained makes it more simpler to understand than what you commented as "Humans are mixed as a whole" because SOME PEOPLE LIKE IDENTIFICATION and SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO KEEP THEIR CULTURE. Hope it helps

It's just that some people wanted to be "approved" for doing something; for example, if I'm at least 10% black, I can "justify" myself on having cornrows or commenting on black people's culture since if I'm pure white by 100%, cornrows or explaining black culture is "culturally inappropriate" nowadays. I guess that's the trend. It's like all those people who claimed they have 0.5% Cherokee-Native American in them so that they can be "legally" living in America without being called "an immigrant / invaders", but never really care about the 100% Native Americans' life anyway.

I live in germany and its no different here. to some everything asian or anything african to them is the same when the cultures and languages from all these countries are different. Maybe in the US its different but from anywhere else i lived in. anything not 100% of one ethnicity is considered as mixed. and the norwegian should take a test before saying that, a lot of people think theyre 100% of one ethnicity before they make a dna test, u dont know everyone who lived before u so u cant 100% know if ur of one ''pure'' ethnicity or not XD

Hello. I just saw this one and was happy to see you are interested in understanding DNA deeper. As the results in this video showed you all of your percentages, there are 2 sides that matter more specifically. Those are your double XX chromosomes that you inherit from both of your parents. One for each. Each X chromosome has a specific mtDna haplogroup it is assigned to.
These haplogroups can most times determine the exact nation or tribe ones ancestors recently originated from. I’m told “And23” and companies alike can produce such results. I was able to determine my Y chromosome originated from a small tribe of Mande speakers in Guinea-Bissau. Hope your results will be as educational for you as mine were for me.

The oldest human remains come from Ethiopian Africa, which is sub-Saharan and nearby (but not in) the Middle East, especially Yemen, for anyone wondering. The evidence is pretty certain that we all are African, and that as close as possible to ancient Ethiopians is "pure human." However, we can't judge how they looked like or acted from modern Ethiopians. Obviously humans have moved around quite a bit in those 2 million years. It seems that gaining our universally equal human intelligence is what allowed us to spread out, being our key adaptive feature other than sweating and long distance running. Hopefully one day we finish mixing back together and find our common ancestry as African once again. Considering how poorly the world has treated African as an identity -- it should be required knowledge that each of us is in fact African. We really have not changed much at all since then. Obviously, "blackness" is a different matter (but there are white cows and black cows and brown cows, and it doesn't matter a bit). The only difference in people is how we've adapted to sunlight/local nutrients in local foods and how we've sexually or ritually selected for facial/body features, based on local tastes. I strongly believe that had there been no language barriers in the world, we could see just how truly intelligent and creative and loving every person in the world is equally, and their worth as such. Unfortunately, its easier to think of accents as sounding "stupid" (when in fact dual language is quite intelligent), and an out dated reliance on color, which has nothing to do with character, and has only to do with sunshine.

I'm the only person on my black side of my family that has any real Native American Ancestry because my paternal grandparents are from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico as that Taino blood still lives on in me. I got about 7% Native American from my father. My black side claimed Cherokee but unfortunately looks doesn't mean anything. I would be alot more Native American than 7% if my blackside real was part Native American. And you would have Native American cousins too if you had Native American Ancestry in your family.

New here. You are absolutely gorgeous!!! Doesn't matter what race you are but I'm glad you're able to acknowledge your black race because of your family-you honor them by having done so. I'm a "white" Puerto Rican and Spaniard. I feel like i always have to justify my race because it doesn't match what people perceive what my culture should look like. So I know the struggle with that. God bless you.

I believe GED match gets your raw data and matches how your total genetic make up matches with the 'average' genetic make up of these populations; that is it could be said how similar, genetically speaking you and those populations are - How 'genetically close' you are, in percentiles (%) to a specific modern population. But folks in the know, please correct me If I'm wrong/inaccurate.

Thank you for sharing. There are many mixed race people similar to yourself and since many of us are unique within our families, we often have a curiosity about other mixed people, since we often have a different experience moving through the world than that of our of those closet to us. Yes. Your being Black does have an affect on your socially, because when you are around white people and someone makes a racist comment, you experience that internal cringe and you will hear these comments much more than someone who presents more Black than you. It is hurtful in a multitude of ways and can cause social ambivalence. You have your own struggles as a mixed person that clearer presenting people have no notion of. Stay strong and never let others define you or tell you that your struggle is less real than theirs because it is less celebrated. I’m also mixed and so is my daughter. I tell her that it isn’t that difficult. Our history is a matter of unwavering FACT. What others FEEL about that is their own issue. Being a good human being is what really matters.

At what point do you think it would be silly for someone to claim the "less than 1%" of them? What would you be like if they walked around saying "I'm Native American" when they have 1% lol I mean I wouldn't necessarily care but I'd roll my eyes.
It's still pretty cool that you got to be brought up within Native American culture somewhat even though that's not who you might really be. Was there a specific tribe that you thought you were or were you raised learning about general "Native American" things

  • @borimirtheboring

You would have to have your mom tested to know for certain that you do or don't have any Native American DNA. Siblings would show completely different DNA percentages.
