The Cadillac CT5-V, like the CT4-V, is no longer a true 'V' like monster-engined Cadillacs of the last 15 years. 'V' now replaces 'V-Sport' as the middle performer, with a new, unnamed product set to slot in above next year. The CT5-V is much like the CTS it replaces, but with more rear seat room, less of the miserable CUE interface, and a 10-speed automatic gearbox mated to the familial 3.0L twin-turbo V6. On paper, it seems promising, but falls well short in how it responds to driver commands.
Cadillac provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

"Downshift you loser". Ha.
I felt that loser bit haha
That really sum it all up
and the v is supposed to stand for victory
And this is the last time cadillac give this guy a car to review 🤣🤣
Cadillac is dead. They killed the one good thing about the brand. Now it's just another GM trashpile that lists its models for double their worth
@@greatcolor How many people bought the V-series? You know very little.
@@arts.8721 not a lot, but they were only thing in the whole lineup that was worth asking prices for decades. How many non V-series does Cadillac sale in the US that arent fleet or rental sales? Excluding the Escalade how many of those are for the under-55 market? Gonna guess hardlly any.
Guess I don't know anything, though. Caddy and Buick are zombies and if it weren't for the Chinese and Middle Eastern market, they'd be taken out back like Pontiac and Saturn.
@@greatcolor I think they sell quite a lot of Escalades and crossovers to retail customers. Look at their sales releases. Cadillac sedan sales plummetted when they increased prices on the CTS to match the 5 Series. Traditional Cadillac customers were not accustomed to paying that much for a vehicle. Now we are in a market shift towards crossovers and SUVs. At least this V series will sell more units than the CTS-V ever did.
@@arts.8721 Not sure it will with this car.
Wow Matt really got angry with this gearbox. I dont think i have seen him that disappointed in a long time.
HackiH I think it’s a one-off issue with this particular car. I’ve seen zero complaints about the gearbox in other reviews. This is simply a software patch away from correction, verified by a CT5-V owner’s comment above.
@@wesleywalls7582 Yeah good point, but how many of those reviewers have standards like Matt?
Maybe it’s the changes in elevation? The throttle management system is so confused by the lack of oxygen while braking that it take a second for it to recalibrate the air/fuel mixture, then deliver it to the trans safely?
Idk much about how these systems work, but like someone said, an update would fix it. The C8 had a similar issue during pre-production.
@@wesleywalls7582 Yea If this can be fixed after the fact i don't think its a big deal. This is the most attractive sedan out at the moment. For mortal pockets. LOL I would still take one.
I’ve never seen Matt complain so much in one OneTake
Frustration does that to people haha
Visit the Bullit Mustang review. 😆
GM will do that to people....
Blackwing! 6 speed manual!
Do you fault him though? I’ve never seen a transmission hesitate so poorly. My auto ‘00 vw Passat was like a Hypercar comparatively
CZcams need to get off this advertisement every 10 seconds
Performance aside, this is the second gorgeous Caddy you have shown...I totally dig the proportions and look....Great job by GM!
I feel Cadillac knows the people buying their cars won’t care about the gearbox performance, as in they’ll barely even use the car in manual mode.
I have this car and a true manual. I always use the standard drive mode.
When you're screaming at the Transmission, "GO DOWN !!!!"
I had a flashback to Joe Pesci grabbing Sharon Stone's head in the movie, Casino.
at a. . . medium pace
_Suburban_ 😂
They’re all gonna laugh at you!
"Now go home and get ya fuckin' -shine- gear box!!"
When it comes to cars it is better to drive one yourself, never rely on another driver ,decide for yourself.
Kinda sad when Kia and Genesis can make an 8spd auto transmission that behaves significantly better than this thing...for less money...
Correct me if I'm wrong but kia/Genesis use the ZF 8HP right?
@@tehgzizlauw1787 It's developed in house. May somehow use parts from/or based off the ZF unit (in all likelihood), but it is an in-house transmission tuned by Kia/Hyundai/Genesis. And for not being a ZF unit, it is tuned VERY well as it is.
I absolutely would drive a genesis before this.
@@tylerbetthauser7647 Do It!!!
Yea because genesis actually cares
The exhaust sounds awful honestly, is that synthetic engine noise or is it how it actually sounds in the cabin?
yeah def synthetic noise in the cabin; sounds abysmal
Sounds like xbox or playstation noise , yuk!
Sounds like a quiet gtr
@@richards1816 ikr it sounds obnoxious
@@RCXDerp Which is already a horrible sounding car
Whats the point in a 10 speed if you cant down shift? Your not going from 4k rpm to 7k like in a 6 speed. The gears are longer!
P1st0ls it’s an entirely economy-minded gearbox. It wasn’t developed with performance applications in mind. The gearbox itself is fine. Putting it in what purports to be a sports sedan is not.
No other review has criticized this gearbox...just the opposite in fact. Either way, you don’t “manually” drive a 10 speed auto...let the programming do its thing, which is otherwise quite good.
@@wesleywalls7582 We get it, you like this abomination. You don't need to defend its honor arguing with people in every comment thread.
Wesley Walls Then why did Cadillac put paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The Cadillac V’s from inception are performance vehicles
P M feel free to do the research yourself. I’m not defending it, but basically every other review does.
Cadillac is just trying to make their brand more accessible, easier for people who don't have 80 grand to get into a decent sedan and hopefully they stay with the brand and upgrade. Their old lineup was only leading them to bankruptcy. This is no different of a lineup scheme than other German brands. People need to stop expecting this to be a CTS-V and taking a dump on it because it doesn't have 650hp. It's just a freaking name folks. The big daddy is coming be patient but don't hate on this right away because its half the power...and price
Well considering it’s apparently from the year 202, I’d cut the transmission some slack
All hail Emperor Septimius Severus! For he has returned to Rome after the triumph in Garama.
A Cadillac V car shouldn't end a drive with smoking brakes...
"" V ""
" GM "
A few years ago GM actually seemed close to making Cadillac a legitimate global contender luxury brand, if not Standard of the world. They had crisp styling, ok-ish interiors and in several cases best or near best in class performance. Now it seems like they’ve backtracked on all their strengths while hardly addressing the weaknesses.
They just have to half-ass something I swear. What’s stopping them from putting an Escalade interior in their other cars? Why can’t they use the tremec dct from the vette instead of a torque converter?
Is it that Barra person
@@freshjnew Mary Barbra’s GM CEO.
What an awful excuse for a performance sedan. I absolutely loved the previous CTS-Vs and even the V-Sport, but everything cadillac has done recently will only continue to bury them. That's one of the worst sounding engines I've ever heard (inside the car at least), I could not stand to listen to that on a daily basis.
Also, how does Cadillac screw up such a good transmission so badly? In the newer Camaros, especially the ZL1, that 10 speed is one of the best on the whole market. Super fast up shifts, downshifts, and the PTM shift logic is so good at prediction that you basically don't need to manually shift unless you just feel like it. It's a shame their chassis and suspension engineering will be overlooked by the rest of the massive flaws.
Summed up my thoughts perfectly. I used to work at a Cadillac dealer and absolutely loved the previous models (albeit the auto gearboxes in those were still crap as well). I love how these new ones look inside and out even more but sadly Cadillac seems to be getting even lazier on the powertrain side of things...
I'm sure they will fix the programming.
You stated the problem. Matt insists on using the paddles. With ten gears, the steps are too small. Leave it in auto and it will shift better.
Dude, seriously...this is one guy’s opinion. The car has generated (nearly) universal praise from just about every other review, INCLUDING the gearbox. You don’t “manual” shift a 10 speed auto for one thing.
@@jakelee5456 He did put it in auto and it was even worse, watch the whole video
Wow.. The Cadillac makes more noise than the F8! 😂
fake noise on the inside, but they do sound pretty nice with an exhaust, the ATS-V with the right exhaust sounds really good
@@phillipberk5767 the ATS-V has a different engine I believe, 3.6
@@phillipberk5767 What's the difference between the 4 and 5?
@@dragospahontu about 10 grand, 4-500 lbs, Inline 4 single turbo vs a v6 twin turbo, and a little bit of more space, thats about it.
@@machucast ok thanks for letting me know.
Nothing like the dulcet tones of Matt yelling at a gearbox lol
The more this guy complains about the car the more I like it.
Before I buy a car this is where I come and this car was on my purchase list.
Why did they make it look like an Accord? RIP cars, accountants killed them
That side view looks exactly like a Kia Stinger
Honda and GM are going to share platforms in the future. Its starting with EVs with GMs battery tech
The Accord still looks better
Love this, Matt getting angry with the gearbox 😂
Instead of calling it v.... sport they could of just called it the carbon trim package. That's really all you're getting it seems.
I test drove the CT5-V. It does much better on long stretches and sweeping turns. The magnetic ride is amazing. Sounds way better in person. This car was built for the highway, not necessarily canyon carving.
Yeah makes sense, seems like a great daily
Thanks for the review; I enjoyed Matt’s agony thoroughly 😀
You crack me up Matt, great review!
Glad you touched on downshifts in it. I have the luxury trim/2.0/10spd and downshifts offer no decel and it has pretty awful gearing. Hopefully the V is better. Still sounds like it would annoy me too.... Can't get the $ for the Blackwing of course though so I guess I might stick with the base trim CT5.
I just knew Caddy was going to mess up the CTS on the redesign.
Matt stay healthy, your body is all that matters
I know what they were thinking with the downshifts, it only revs to just over 6k, and it pulls best in the mid range of the revs. Despite not feeling the fastest it may actually be the best way to drive it, BUT, should let you bounce it off the limiter if your in manual. He’s correct in his criticisms.
I could feel Matt's frustration coming through the screen.
cadillac's always sound so droney to me. definitely don't sound as good as the German 6 cylinders. but seems like a nice sedan
Yea and they sound soooo generic
V6 vs inline6. After listening to the Nissan v6s though I'm not even sure it's due to this.
Sounds good to me. So do the Bimmers though.
Turbos interfere with the exhaust sound
It's piped in through the speakers which is why it sounds artificial... It is.
Six gears that shift when you tell it to would be just fine here. GM: Continuing to build a track record of disappointment. That’s a sweet road. May I recommend SR245 south out of Kings Canyon as another epic road less traveled? Cheers and thanks for the video.
Shhh don't tell people about that road
The Smoking Tire had smoking brakes.
Does anyone make a tune for the transmission? or do you think anyone will?
Going to be pretty hard to replace that standard bearer CTS.
I got to say I was a GM guy myself but I left a couple years ago the quality alone is what drove me away from them and they don’t even stand behind their shit I can see them going out of business within the next 10 years customers are going to be tired of it because I’m not the only one
This will probably be the last Cadillac he gets to review.
In D and track mode, it does a good job of downshifting by itself when you'd want it to. Just an FYI.
This gearbox is like the gearbox in my Acura TL. Shifting with the paddles can be frustrating sometimes
Hate paddle shifters...dumbest idea in automotive engineering...
@@marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938 thank u 🙏. Give me a stick shift any day
Exactly...sad thing is, in 10...20 years at most...I fear sticks will be only found on antiques...among enthusiasts or in museums. We are the last, I think.
@@marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938 we are. I’ll keep manuals alive for as long as I can
@@JaredR1996 hats off to a fellow stick enthusiast...I don't even think we represent 10% of drivers out there anymore...oh well...at least we are still around to enjoy them...
Love to watch this guy drive like a mad man , and then say "medium pace" 😂. And I'm pretty sure that car is broken , because even my chevy malibu will downshift straight back to redline.
That car's design is all over the place. It's not difficult to look at until you get used to it like a Gallardo, which looks great now but had a mixed reception initially.
It's like the grille from car A, lights and fake intakes from car B, sides and roof from car C and rear from car D.
Couldn’t agree more I have the 10 speed in the ct4-v, wished they stayed with the 8 speed of the prior ATS.
Caddicrap has definitely earned their reputation
Angry Matt reviews are great! Honestly, every time a car CZcamsr talks about Cadillac I remember that Cadillac actually still exists outside of the Escalade. They've lost their way even more than BMW has.
I had to come back and check this one after Blackwing 🤣
This is the only other CT5 I’ve ever seen with the two tone like mine! But I have a CT5 Sport.
Love it Matt! Putting Cadillac in its place and telling it like it is!!! Simple things that were overlooked without justification.
BTW, I believe the 4WD does not have MagnaRide.
It’s does, on the v, it’s the ct4 awd that can’t have magride
@@larrywoods8871 - I stand corrected. Thank you!
It honestly downshifts worse than the CVT out of the wrx
K C haha haha, clearly, no idea what you speak off
I started this video to learn more about the CT5-V....and only stayed to watch it to hear him complain about it lol.
I agree, hopefully it’s not named black wing. Maybe VR? VS? Just not black wing please
GM probably saves a whole 36 dollars per unit NOT licensing a ZF transmission....
You can license the best transmission in the business and still fuck it up. See also: Audi S/RS/4/5 and their slightly lethargic shifts using the ZF8.
vomErsten Jeep also has shitty ZF’s
Wow this video felt so fast. I like it.
So Matt, how did you like the gearbox?
I recently drove a VW Passat with DSG and I felt exactly the same about the shitty slow shifting. So much more fun with e.g. Honda or Mazda manual.
My 2000 Passat was sooo much quicker on the downshifts than this caddy. Embarrassing to say the least
Hey Matt (or Zack) idk if you guys read these but I’d love to see a review of the now mostly defunct CT6 Blackwing, never really seen somebody with the dynamic vocab/references that Matt has review one.
this is some of the most animated reviewing I have seen from you lol
How does this compare to a Q50 Red Sport AWD without DAS driven in manual mode and nannies turned off?
Saw the new video post on Instagram, still unsure if this was a comedy show of Matt yelling or a decent review of a car platform in need of better powertrains (with better sound, too!). LOL
2021 with the digital dash makes the performance section very simple to get into and change, you can even assign the PTM mode you want to the vmode button to make it idiot proof.
Matts got his cranky pants on this morning. Hopefully they go to work on the trans, a shame I was looking to pick one up. My ATS w/6MT will live on for another few years
Naw. It's a great car, don't change it so a grumpy old man can drive to drive like a lunatic. Lol.
Take this review with a grain of salt, because the CT5-V has garnered (nearly) universal praise from nearly every other reviewer. I honestly don't know what Matt's beef is here, because as a more reasonably priced "V-Sport" replacement, it addresses nearly every imperfection with that car, at a SIGNIFICANTLY discounted price over it's predecessor and current competition. Jonny Lieberman even went so far as to say the CT5-V is "better" than the M340i and S4. As a current S4 owner who's test driven the CT5-V, it's a very impressive car.
It is 2020 when you hit a button you expect it to react now. Not mid air off a cliff.
It kinda says something when Matt is able to speak an entire sentence after he clicks the paddles before it downshifts LOLLL. GM cars did this in 08. Shouldn't be happening now. Was that behavior present on your test drive? This has to be simply pre-production software tuning I hope. Otherwise looks like a solid car!
justin beamon then this must be a one-off software issue, because I’ve seen ZERO complaints about that issue in any review...and trust me, I’ve watched/read them all...nor did I experience that in my test drive.
Are there any companies that have a tune to change the transmission?
No it does not replace the the cts-v. Every review that states this is a fail. It’s a ct5 -v Perfect mid range performance car.
At about 7mins in, I heard you click a paddle for a downshift and then get out an entire sentence before the transmission actually downshifted. What a disappointment, especially when it makes a great sound and apparently handles quite well.
That was me trying to drive a Stinger GT (both motors). I really ended up hating that car for the wank gearboxes. Couldn't imagine driving a Caddy with the once vaunted V badge and having such an experience. Shame
Just get an almost new ATS-V with a manual and call it a day. At least until the supercharged V8 with the manual comes out.
Saw about GM Honda coop. As much as it hurts some (mostly the oldies, myself included). This relationship might produce something well. An "X"000 (S2000, reference), with the GM research on chassis handling and structure.
LMAO at John Daly 😂👏
Looks wise, looks better than most of the cars in the same class.
Anyone know what watch Matt is wearing? I like it!
That review, honestly, remind it me self the first two days I got this car, plus I had the honor of a check engine light, from the first night of ownership. Also some panels wasn't aligned properly, especially the passengers door that was hitting the rear door panel. LOL
I returned the car back to the dealership and they re-programmed it. The downshift problem is resolved once and for all, no more check engine lights and every panel was properly aligned. I believe the CT5-V, wasn't ready to hit the market. The 1st factory ECU program wasn't even the right for this car since is a "V" model. The Covid-19 strike played a major roll to this car factory flaws. GM skipped many quality controls and protocols at it's factories in order to shut them down as soon as possible when Covid-19 was a major risk.
Besides that, the car, runs, drives and feels great. You don't have to floor it all day or live at the red line in order to get back from this car. Sadly, the engine sound is "enhanced" from the speakers, but from the outside, the exhaust sound have a great note and it's really loud at track mode. That's why I'm always driving that car with the windows down. Lol. For sure the car in not 360hp that Cadillac claims. That I believe is to keep the lowest possible insurance rates.
At the end I understand the era that this car came to the market and is a great start for Cadillac to extend its dynamics
Agreed. This is a pretty solid performance sedan that nearly every other review acknowledges.
@@wesleywalls7582 but Matt didn't made a review. He just took a ride with this car. Plus keep in mind most of the journalists are getting paid by the major automotive companies, so they can't honestly review cars.
Alex Simantiras perhaps, but literally the ONLY complaint he had was the downshift times, which you note is simply a software latch away from correction. I wish he’d spent more time acknowledging everything else that’s pretty fantastic about the car.
the only proper review uploaded on CZcams is by "The Straight Pipes"
That thing is more reluctant to downshift than my is200t LOL.
Oh dear, that was a bit of a train reck. Looks like Cadi didn’t do its s/w tuning homework and got caught out.
What road where you driving on Matt?
They really shud have just called this a V-Sport...and maybe pushed the hp closer to 385
But how does it downshift?
You can feel the frustration
Welp they named the fast version Blackwing. This didn’t age well.
Please test the 2021 Acura TLX and compare to this. Especially the transmission. The Type S will really be the competitor to this but still
No ones gonna take GM serious until they commit to one name for a car and stick with it. Ppl loved the CTS and it sold well so why keep renaming the same car? That’s why ppl love Honda’s and Toyota’s because they’re reliable and familiar
I like it better then the CTS
Is the redline seriously at 6k? 10 gears and a low redline... No wonder it doesn't do what you want.
I suppose since the redline is only 6000 that they want to argue that the engine has enough grunt at 3000 to not need a downshift.
But that's no reason for not allowing a downshift at like 4000 in manual mode, specially on a 10speed box with short gears.
6k redline lol what is it a truck ?
In the Camaro it downshifts quicker if you leave it in auto, and let the computer do the shifting, but its never going to be a DCT
Looks like the stress of setting up the garage took a toll on you buddy
Johan de Nysschen: destroyer of car companies.
No, this is just classic GM. If you read the interview with Johan that Automobile Mag did, it's very evident that decisions were made above him and his hands were tied. The HQ move wasn't even his doing.
Seems that low 6k red line just doesn't work with the obviously safe downshift programing.
Ikr it's like their scared to let it land in higher rpms but the car doesn't even redline high xD
Does Cadillac still make any coupe versions of any model?
Nope
Replaces the CTS V sport , but has like 60 less hp than the previous car 😂 oh caddy, and that trans is a deal breaker
The new Blackwing is coming with a manual. Problem solved!! I can not wait for the manual Blackwing. I have never owned or even test driven a Cadilac, but I am cross-shopping CT5 (6MT) vs M3 (6MT). I just want a good driver's car with 5 seats and a manual.
What a road!
I don't recall ever seeing a car frustrate Matt as much as this car did. Crossing this one off the list.
Imagine crossing a car off the list cuz one person doesn’t like it lmao
2020 and they can't still make good automagic transmissions... my Opel Vectra from 1995 had the best automagic transmission I have driven in my 20 years of driving and somehow automakers forgot how to make a good one.
That Opel would dowshift into the best powerband it could at a hint of gas pedal moving faster than normal, never ever had to yell at it to change gears, and in Sports mode it would maintain at least 4000 RPM at all times while raising shiftpoint 700 RPM higher.
Typing this has made me realize why Automakers "forgot" how to make good automagics.. that gearbox was beyond aggressive even when taking it slow and it was scary to drive for most people (sudden burnouts at highway speed etc).
What has gm done
That is a good looking car!
What's the difference between the 4 and 5?
so hows the transmission :)
The HFV6 redline is like, 500 RPM higher than the LT5 isn't it? Sounds like they didn't retune the trans for the different engine.
