In the last several years, Mercedes, BMW, and Audi have all launched "Performance-lite" versions of their AMG, M, and RS vehicles. These vehicles have performance attributes such as adjustable suspensions, bigger wheels and tires, and sporty interiors, but without the big war-hammer engines. Mercedes uses appropriate badging to show what engine is in the vehicle. BMW names the car in an entirely different fashion to the true "M" range of cars, to differentiate. Audi writes "S-Line" on the trim panels. But the Caddy's new "V-Series" range of cars, which are decidedly not "V" cars, are badged just like last year's "V" cars were. So everyone thinks this is a true V car. But it is most definitely not. It has a four-cylinder engine from a truck. It has a poorly programmed gearbox. And, most disappointingly, it's just not very engaging to drive, compared to what it's outwardly promising with this badging. Certain things are improved from (not-a-replacement for) the ATS, such as the absence of CUE, which should never be spoken of again.

they saw how lexus, benz, and bmw were cashing in on putting the F, amg, and M badges on slow cars as appearance packages and said "oh lemme get in on that". Makes it really confusing for consumers who dont actively research cars (most people)
Consumers who don't actively research cars don't care and buy new. I don't like this but it makes sense. Make the V line cheaper and people who want "top of the line" will line up for it.
Sadly it works marketing wise.... People are suckers for badge.
Except the Germans actually make decent models like the M340i and C43 that better split the gap. This CT4 is such a poor and cheap attempt to compete.
@@seanpittacora9668 The CT5 V series has the 3.0 twin turbo.
I've already heard a whole bunch of people say "I bought an AMG" or "I bought a BMW and it's an M car!!". They didn't though.

@@bossudude420 jejeje, but they do use it as company cars. BTW Hertz lists the CTS and 911's too.
Thank you for taking Cadillac to the woodshed over the naming. They should have made a new intermediate line or trim level rather than destroy the brand of V.
Should of stuck with "Vsport" for the non "V" v cars.
these are slower than vsports lol

CA Simmons yeah that was a CTS which was a bigger car
I dont think we’ll be seeing the CT5 review after Cadillac sees this 😜😜😜
He didnt really bash the actual car too much. But you have to admit the branding is all over the place lol
why not? He only griped with the engine and transmission. he said the steering and suspension was great, and it looked great taking those corners too.
Last crew show with Zack, he mentioned reviewing them both.
Nah, he can just stop in at a local Hertz and rent one for $50.

As an ATS owner, I love the 2.7t in the CT4.
Glad you gave em your honest opinion, they need to hear this...Spent 15 years building brand cache, all to flush it, because of some short sighted vision from someone who doesnt understand how long it takes to build the heritage. Fire that Individual GM/Cadillac, please! Looking forward to the CT5 review, will pick one up as a daily eventually and retire my ATS
Not sure if its just my audio setup but the audio is quite blown when the volume peaked
It isn't just you
What I enjoy about your channel/reviews are : no goofy sidekick, corny music or placating the OEM products. The Caddy review was spot on,no holds barred slamfest on what the "V" used to be and now what it has now been watered down to... btw any manufacturer that pipes in fake engine sounds into the cabin will never have me as a customer..
I test drove one of these. I can’t fathom how it’s 2020 and GM door cards still feel like they’re barely attached
I guess some things never change lol
@@Syncopia HA I came here to say the same thing
My rental GMC Yukon XL door card actually split off from the door , and I just laughed, thank God I'm just renting it for 2 weeks
What in the world is a “door card”?
@@wesleywalls7582 another word for door panel. apparently they yeet themselves in GM products.
To further destroy brand equity, this is the engine that GM promised was ONLY for trucks...
to be honest.. I am actually seriously buying this car.. it edged out the manual G70 for me, an no RWD 330i in Canada. I wouldn't buy a V or a base model.. so the V lite is perfect for me
snakedoktor just because their branding is confusing and inconsistent doesn’t mean they don’t make good cars!
I have this engine in my Silverado - one of the first off the line. It's phenomenal in a truck... when I heard they were putting it in a car with performance intent, I nearly fell off of my chair. It is a low revving, torquey engine that likes to chug along under boost. It is closer in driving dynamics to a Diesel than anything else, and will be terrible in a car. He hit the nail on the head though - big bore 4 cyls are great for torque but there is only so much that can be done to smooth out that much rotating mass.
LMAO. I was about to blame Johan de Nysschen for this for the same reason. "I am become Johan. Destroyer of brands..."
But did you ever find the pups?
Damn! This is one busy review! Matt is on fire. And the road also.
Keep up the good work! A million subs are just around the corner!
Couldn't disagree with you more, how hard is it. V means middle ground, Blackwing is the new pinnacle. I'm 💯 fine with it, for many this V car has way more power and handling than average drivers would need. Great job Cadillac, keep up the good work!!!
Nice review matt, even if the car you drive sometimes lacks excitement, your videos are always top of the line in terms of entertainment.
Just about shat myself when I saw the dog, good driving Matt 👍
I loved the 4 minute rant. This man speaks our mind.
Press F to pay respects to the V badge
Review on point. Been waiting for a review. Thanks Matt!
She was actually walking on the proper side so she can see traffic coming towards her. It's how it's done when there is no sidewalk unless you enjoy getting hit by an idiot on the phone. And that dog... Jeez...
On the V bit: I feel you on it. They shouldn't slap a V badge on a non fire-breathing caddie. Still plenty of grunt though! And proper wheel drive.
It's like Matt was implying she walk across the road to get to the most visible spot for each turn. Like that's any less dangerous lol.
@@smittysmitherson1952 I'll sometimes do that on particularly bad blind corners-obviously you have to cross far enough before the corner that you're not just putting yourself in the middle of the road in the blind corner. But yeah, wouldn't normally do it on _every_ corner.
@@autotempest that's a fair point, but given her age I'd say Matt was still a bit off-brand in his comments. But hey, if it wasn't for Matt it probably would have taken me a couple more years before discovering your site. I've been a near-daily visitor since you sponsored TST. Cheers!
@@smittysmitherson1952 also fair. I guess you have to expect the occasional imperfect comment with a one-take. He's certainly more coherent than I would be! Glad you like the site. :)
Not using the actual Blackwing motor is the final nail in the coffin for Cadillac as a performance brand.
Engine was too large to fit in any reasonably sized car
Going to an all EV lineup is the final. Nail in the coffin
Its going to be weird and awesome the day we see Matt Farah starting to look buff and fit, hes already 75% there, its really great progress and happy he is staying health conscious
The exterior DNA has been holding up well for so long, but the rear needs an update.
Would this engine, better with a +compressor and or a hybrid torque system?
Shameful what Cadillac did to the V name.
Shameful what Cadillac did to the Cadillac name.
Like BMW isn't guilty of the same thing
I love when you torch people cause they usually deserve it 😂😂 its always funny
This seems like a nice daily, I would rock this
If we're calling out GM for their terrible naming convention, we might as well blame BMW for charging $2k+ for "M" stickers.
Loved the honesty here. Great work as always. Insane the they would torch the equity built up in the V name. I would be curious how this drives compared to the larger G70 3.3TT which weirdly goes for the same price as this with one of two options ticked.
Recently drove both. The G70 3.3 sport feels like a wallowy boat compared to the CT4-V. The Powertrain overall is better in the G70 but not enough to overcome the handling prowess of the CT4-V. Matt's not exaggerating on the handling and steering being excellent. I did not find the transmission to be anywhere near as frustrating also, and I drove it pretty hard...
So incredibly stupid what they’ve done with V and blackwing... and most of the time us car guys get upset and then get over this kind of stuff, but I’ve been following this from the beginning, and it’s still one of the stupidest things I’ve seen
I think it's great marketing
Dragos Pahontu wrong
What do you mean they got rid of the blackwing motor? Per the website, the CT6V has the blackwing v8? Agreed on the dilution of the name V though.. I suppose they thought they were doing what BMW does with M, where M2 is not the same as M3 or M6, but it’s still not the same when what they call a V is more like a sport version or V series as you said.
This is a step backwards for Cadillac in terms of performance but I have to say I really like their material and interior design choices
this time around, that burgundy color leather looks really unique.
Anyone know where the mustang 2008 chassis number is located?
Only true nerds can get stuck up on naming and completely overlook the actual review of a competitively priced vehicle in this class.
Wonder what the aftermarket holds for the 2.7l though ltg 2.0l gained a lot of horses from a tune
Probably a decent bit. I don't think the head studs will hold up to a lot though. This thing is far more utility
Well the back
Looks nice.... what’s the difference from the ct5 and ct4
I'm getting a lot of peaking in my right ear throughout the whole video but most noticeable between 2:00 and 4:45. Just a production note, thanks as always for the free and quality content!

My dad is from upstate New York and said the same thing... in fact he went back east to visit during the heat wave 😂
Hopefully Cadillac will listen to people like you and bring the big engines back.
Exterior quality control on these things is a huge step back from my 3rd gen CTS. Panel gaps are totally unmanaged and half of the ones I've seen while wandering the lot while my car is in service don't even have their badges applied straight.
LOVE THE VIDEOS!! Why take a car that's built for luxury and expect sport car performance?
How’s this thing still have the cobalt gauge cluster?
Because digital gauge clusters stop being cool when they break and you have to spend a small fortune to fix them
We should have seen this coming when they released the CTS-V Sport. This is like how VW are now attaching an R badge on their basic models.
Reminds me of the "V Sport" cars.
I think that's what they've basically done. They moved the V Sports to V and the V to the V Blackwing. Makes zero sense why they'd shuffle the chairs on the Titanic, but that's the path they picked.
I can't believe I just sat through the whole video about a hoo-hum car.
It's Monday morning, and I'm still asleep I suppose... lol
Congrats Caddy, you made your first bangle butt.
The front lip area reminds me a lot of the 2014+ S60 R-design.
brilliant entertainment. thank you.
What the hell is up with the stitching on the back side of the steering wheel? That looks gnarly.
Nice of you to be more critical than usual even at the risk of not getting as many press cars. Caddy seems to still be floundering. I suspect part of the problem is it’s a sedan and GM just doesn’t care much about sedans anymore. As of 2021 Buick’s entire line up will be SUVs. I also wonder if the same road is deep in smoke now?
Great reaction with that dog. Holy shit. Another great One Take 🤘🏻
Good rant about the whole v blackwing thing
Love this road
I am also curious to see this engine with a massive turbo. Wonder if it can handle boost. Why don't more people take these and plop them into miatas?
Because you don't want a miata to drive like a tractor.
Matt is really clipping the apexes wearing a WSCCS shirt at WSCCS while doing an ad read.
Love this car
This or a Scat Pack widebody Charger? Easy choice
I used to drive by the tech center all the time on my way to class and I can’t get over the rear end on those. Idk why but it just looks god awful to me
It's got a real bangle-butt
The state of GM at this time: Volvo makes a better performance sedan than any GM brand. VOLVO!
They are also funded by the Chinese, then again so is GM probably at this point.
Ya ve are sweedish and we use the _oohlins_ dampers, they are very, as you say... _creamy_ yes mmhmm? The mooses like them and also we have the loveli lakes.
I own two modern Volvo’s, and your statement couldn’t be more INCORRECT! I love what modern Volvo’s offer, but legitimate sports sedans they are not. Cadillac builds some of the best handling sports sedans on the planet, as evidenced by this very review (though I prefer the CT5-V, which I found to be pretty brilliant on a test drive).
13:00 random dog on the road.
Yay more Stunt and Piuma vids!
No way I would spend $50k on a 4-cylinder Cadillac....or any 4-cylinder car really.
I would have respected if Cadillac would have just called it a platinum or premium.
good to know i'm not the only social guy who thinks its getting a bit humid here
Could you also drive the 330i? I'd be interested to hear which one you prefer.
S-Line does say it is S-Line - usually it is even stitched on the seats and steering wheel, and not a true S. For example, there's A4 S-line and S4.
Why is it that in the US these type of roads are double yellow whilst in the EU they may not even be marked sometimes!?!?
Love the cars - but do agree they should have stuck with "V Sport" and "V" - people were just starting to figure that out then they changed it up.
I think Cadillac messed up the naming a bit, but it's in line with what M and AMG have done. Certainly, car enthusiasts don't like it, but for selling to a broader market, it's a good move for them. Non-car people are just going to think all these cars are the high-performance versions. Manufacturers hoping to broaden their appeal and increase sales at the expense of diluting their performance equity with enthusiasts.
The M-performance/43 AMG lineup, which is one step down from true M/AMG cars, also have M/AMG badges everywhere. Look on the back of an m-performance 3 series and it says ///M340i. Cadillac is more cavalier with this and just put V on the back of your tester instead of something like V-350, but I have a feeling when the Blackwing launches, it will have badging unique to the line. Either way, I don't like it and the messaging from Cadillac on the change has been poor, but the direction is not so much different from BMW/Mercedes.
ALL CARS GO TO HEAVEN PART 2
2.7 inline 4...my buddies Hyundai tiburon had a V6 that was only 2.7 liters lmao, Chrysler had a 2.7 V6 too. That’s pretty big for a 4 banger.
I feel like you can tell how few people get to the very end of videos because of the lack of questions about the dog. I hope it was okay, glad you were able to avoid it!
Regardless this seems like a decent car. It would probably be good for my dad who likes to pretend he likes sporty cars but really just wants comfort.
52k for a dressed up Malibu
Its just AMG and BMW M. Putting AMG and M badges on everything
It's like IMAX vs IMAX experience. Totally different product.
$54k for the 4 cylinder from a base model Chevy truck..?
Why does it look like a Korean car?
Will it match the reliability?
So basically this competes with base Alfas, bmw 2 series gran coupe, base kia gt/g70, , base merc cla etc....entry level luxury aspirational vehicle.
Enjoyed review and agree the naming is a cluster-fart, yet it is still a nice car - why not a 5 cyl - better sound, more rpm, more power ??
That center dash pop up display just makes it look soo dated in 2020. Those ugly 1st gen Ipad like bezels just urk me to the core!! The heck were they thinking?
Why not the twin turbo v6 for this guy?
Look at the CT4-V BLACKWING and CT5-V BLACKWING models for the top performance models. He is testing the MIDDLE V models.

Wonder where they got idea for V-Series, sounds familiar ///M340i 😃. They shouldn't get hated for that. I like how it looks, probably it even drives better than 3 series. Wish GM makes come back to Europe and offer us Cadillac in every country.
This monstrosity wouldn't sell in europe. I mean damn that's a new kind of ugly.
I never liked to look of the "new" cadillacs, but this one takes it to a whole new level.
