If they wanted a female herald for Galactus, there already is one in the comics (Nova aka Frankie Raye) and her inclusion could be really good. As the girlfriend of Johnny Storm who learns she has a past tied to his and powers a lot like his, she would introduce some great dramatic tension. The movie (like the comic) could show them bonding over Johnny showing Frankie how to use and come to grips with her powers, the two of them becoming really close, before Frankie decides to become the herald of Galactus. A move that devastates Johnny. It could be a really good, powerful story arc.
But I forget, Marvel Studios doesn't do arcs anymore, especially ones where the female characters grow. They come in as girl bosses and let us know that we should be ashamed for not recognizing how amazing they are. Too bad. The introduction of Frankie could be really good, powerful and introduce a female character could care about. Easier (for Marvel) to just genderswap the Silver Surfer and tell us we should care.

Good idea, but they most likely won't since Marvel/Disney is still planning on doing a Nova(Richard Ryder) movie or series and didn't want the confusion that is if they don't gender swap Ryder as well.

I concur. compelling characters and writing is what is needed. I grew up with Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor (Terminator) and Sigourney Weaver in Alien(s) series. Tough, compelling, well written characters. I'd be extremely torqued off if anyone attempted to reboot those films with a male protagonist.

Thanks for your stand on this! The reason they do the gender-bending is probably that you just cannot fix STUPID. I want more of the cool, historically-female Marvel characters like Black Widow, Mystique, Rogue, Wasp, Storm, Jean Grey, etc, etc. But, NOT at the expense of historically-male characters. I guess their next stunt will be to give us a Trans-Galactus.

FriendlySpaceNinja posted a video about CW’s Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist that I feel is one of the most prominent early examples of senseless gender-swapping. The most standout line in that video was that the CW didn’t write Supergirl; they wrote a female Superman. The differences between Superman and Supergirl’s characters in the comics were so much more than just gender. Their entire personal history, upbringing, and personalities all significantly contrasted each other. This contrast is what made Supergirl’s relationship with Superman and their interactions so interesting because readers were able to see two very different perspectives on how Kryptonians live amongst humans. However, all that is lost in the CW show where Supergirl is basically given Superman’s backstory and personality with only slight superficial differences and the only relationship she has with Superman is when he’s used as a measuring stick for them to compare heroics. Talk about lazy, uninspired writing.

Don't get me wrong, Tilda is great, but they didn't have a good reason to make that change.

That's unfair, at least in part.

@@mnomadvfx it’s 100 percent the truth and fair. Firefly, Brother Eye, Bronze Tiger, Talia, Anarky, Ra’s Al Ghul, Dollmaker, Deadshot, and his relationship with Waller and Constantine. They didn’t trust accurate GA could get it done while also not being able to get Batman. So they utilized his villains, storylines and traits.
Ra’s Al Ghul is his name as his real name is lost to history. It’s not a title to be passed down to successors as he’s leads for 700 years. CW writing basically all he does is walk around with his arms behind his back. This Ra’s Al Ghul walks and talks in a way a dumb person would when trying to portray wisdom, intelligence and being regal. Like a fortune cookie with their messages.
You can look this up Ra’s Al Ghul was created to be Batman’s Moriarty (intellectual villain) the potential end all villain. He’s a foil villain to Batman. They mainly only looked at the Batman Begins film and thought let’s do that but worse with a mixture of some of the comics version.
Comic Ra’s Al Ghul like Batman is an super genius polymathic intellectual scientist first and a legendary Grandmaster level ninja/Kung fu warrior with great integrity second. Batman like Ra’s want to rid the world of crime, corruption, pollution and restore nature they just have different ways to try and accomplish their goals. Comic Ra’s wants to cull like 90 percent of the human population to do it and we know that Batman is definitely not on board with that leading to their respectful but brutal conflict.
Having those things in common is why he is why he wanted Batman to be his heir. Ra’s Al Ghul was intrigued by Batman that’s why he tested him through his intellect, warrior prowess and morality. Thinking that we wanted but couldn't have Batman let's just use a powerful Batman villain and water him down to make the hero competent.
This is why I ABSOLUTELY HATE his portrayal in Arrow CW because they FUNDAMENTALLY misunderstood him. So they had to water him down for Oliver to be competent. In Arrow, he was just an immortal ninja warlord with an army of assassins. Since they couldn't get Batman (S-Tier) they instead utilized the B team with Oliver (Green Arrow) and took away Ra’s Al Ghul intellect and morals by having him look for his heir with a sword prophecy. Batman doesn’t need a stupid sword prophecy that allowed someone as immoral as Malcolm Merlyn become the new leader of the League.
They should have used a Green Arrow villain.
If Ra’s Al Ghul was written like his INTELLECTUAL comic book version he would’ve clowned team arrow. Once Maseo turned over the virus and told him about the vaccine Ra’s himself would’ve bioengineered the virus to make it stronger and overcome the vaccinated. Then released it on Star City just like he to Gotham with the Ebola A virus in the Batman Contagion story. This Ra’s didn’t even take this into consideration because he’s a dummy.
Lastly the whole destroy the city because all of the past Ra’s Al Ghul had to was stupid. So I have to destroy my home to become Ra’s Al Ghul what real purpose does that have? Like it was an initiation even if he came from a good place with wholesome people.

    • @johnbox271
      @johnbox271 Před 9 měsíci +5

In my opinion it depends. There is a difference between just gender swapping a character, and saying good enough (Representation); and changing the character to female and working to build that character. For example Ronald D. Moore decide to gender swap a character, but him, the writers, and the actress worked hard to make the character something more. Thus Dirk Benedict and Katee Sackhoff character's share the same name, and a few characteristics, but the really are written as different characters. I think most fans found Kara "Starbuck" Thrace an interesting character and a positive part of Battlestar Galactica.

Hi Jay, I think the problem , with Disney and many otters today, is that they are run by people are not creative themselves. If Walt Disney were still running the company, he would strive to tell only stories he and his fans wanted. To make said stories, he would surround himself with other creatives.
Sadly Walt is long gone, and his dream is now overseen by bankers. When bankers are presented with something , like The Fantastic Four, that they bought rather then created, , they ask is," How much will we make, and, how will it take to see profit?'" Unlike Disney , they are more interested in how many boxes get ticked and what it will cost. We have reached a point where we have " creatives" who do not know how to create a compelling character,so, they do this instead. LOVE YOUR WORK!!!

There are two female heralds of Galactus that I know of.
First one is Frankie Raye aka Nova (no not Richard Rider Nova) who got her powers from the inventor of the original android Human Torch and had her memories and powers repressed intil she started dating Johnny Storm.
The second is Juno who is from another universe, specifically universe 829, and supposedly the granddaughter of a deceased Hercules. She's the only who basically looks like a gender swapped Norrin Radd (Silver Surfer).
So they'll either just genderswap Norrin, or use either one of those.
Also Galactus will be in it but je won't be a brown fart cloud this time around and i dont think he'll debut and be killed off in the same movie.
Maybe if he shows up with 4 heralds right off the bat: Nova, Juno, Firelord and Silver Surfer, then it could be interesting.
Perhaps Norrin has a change of heart and helps the FF against the other three and Galactus and the three get defeated or killed and Galactus yeets off somewhere; maybe a Celestial shows up or the Beyonder himself beckons him.

A great Commentary! I agree that that Silver Surfer does not need to be the Silver Suffragette! There are many other female heroes in Marvel that could be focused on. A lot of the female heroes that have already been in movies could have been better if they weren't so busy trashing men to elevate themselves. Why can't all the heroes be presented just like they were in their respective comic books? That's what sold the characters, the books, and the earlier Marvel movies. Review the formula that was used to make Iron Man 1, Captain America 1, and Thor 1and then use that proven formula to make all the new movies. If Disney and Marvel don't get it right with the next round of movies, they will completely lose the fans/moviegoers.

I’ve been a fan of the FF since I was a kid reading their comic books in the 70’s. Literally nobody is mad about Sue Storm being a female, and nobody is claiming she should be gender swapped. I find it the height of irony that people will complain that the fans want the Silver Surfer to remain a male character, when he’s been a male character for over 50 years!

I am biased towards Classical interpretations of comic book characters. So, out of every gender swap of a comic book character, the Silver Surfer bothers me the least. Symbolically the feminine is closer aligned with the raw, chaotic (perhaps divine) force of the Power Cosmic. Channeling it into order is something classic associated with the masculine, but better illustrated by Galactus, imo.
Also, as the Surfer progresses and his feets become more and more complex and generate greater causalities, to the point where he creates lifeforms. He, in effect, becomes an agent of chaos, and thus more classically feminine.
I’m not naive enough to believe that this is the logic they’ll go with, cause “diversity is our strength” but yeah, in a vacuum, the gendswap doesn’t bug me
TLDR: gender swap fine, female characters better align with chaotic-good archetypes.

The problem I have with this decision is that it signals the ongoing problem that Disney is ashamed of its source material and audience.
Leaving that aside, Silver Surfer, even if Disney changes their mind on the sex change...
He's not a good starter villain. He's too powerful a threat, and locks them into the Galactus storyline too early. It is a decision which reminds me of what went wrong with the DCEU - the creators being in too much of a rush.
The first movie already has to establish four superheroes and the dynamics between them. Personally I'd go with Mole Man, he was the first in the comics after all.
While in the comics the Silver Surfer starts out as a FF4 villain, I'd actually save him for an Avengers movie.

To this day I'm still confused as to why anyone would think "re-imagined for modern audiences by subverting expectations" is a good working model for entertainment.
Every single time it's resulted in bad writing, boring characters and a litany of "you're evil if you don't love this" marketing ... followed by ever-decreasing box office returns.
    .
And the old "all publicity is good publicity" doesn't hold true when it's 99% saying "this is garbage" and 1% whining about "representation" (that same 1% never buys tickets by the way).

I totally agree. On a side note, for me the big problem with the Fantastic Four is that they all have cool powers--except for Reed Richards. Having an elastic body is just plain goofy. It looks silly and it's hard to have him do anything with it that isn't silly. So I'm not sure a Fantastic Four movie can work even if they do it responsibly.

The Silver Surfer is, and has been my favorite Marvel character since I was old enough to read comic books, back in the late 1960's. What made him interesting was the driving motivational force behind his entire existence - to reunite with his beloved wife, Clea. The gender differences in how a male vs. a female would choose to go about rebalancing the scales of justice after she was killed, or in stasis forever as was the case, leads to completely different outcomes if the Silver Surfer now is a woman, which completely and utterly fucks with not only the original story content, but loses the masuline drive to do anything it takes to once again be with the woman he loves - very different from what a woman would do. There is no equivalency and there never will be because men and women are both amazing, BUT DIFFERENT!!

Gender-swapping roles speaks to a larger problem, implying that the movie space (or comic movie space) is so small that we have to push out characters that were coded male in order to bring in other genders, when in fact the space is so much larger for all genders and orientations to begin with, starting from the media the movies originated from --- comics. The comics space already has TONS of presentation with original characters that are already diverse to begin with.

I've been saying to myself recently the problem isn't a character getting their gender or race swapped, it's the unnecessary "woke" message that follows. I don't mind watching a movie about a woman saying to herself she can be just as successful as any man so long as she doesn't say it to anyone else. Unless the movie came out before 2000 we do not need to hear woman say they can do something better than a man. As a matter of fact, we need to hear them say is they can do it better than they thought previously or better than they did before.

  • @doyscherr

I think a good reason for Disney Marvel to change normal Fantastic Four conventions is that the usual FF doesn't really work. The original movies were pretty close to canon but still are considered disappointing. The 2015 was devoted to the Ultimate Comics property and that is considered a joke.
Even the comic doesn't sell well unless a top tier writer is involved.
So there is little incentive for the studio to stay devoted to comics with Fantastic Four.

Great discussion. Funny, but the writer's of Amazon's Reacher seem to have written pretty decent female characters into the show that integrate nicely with their male counterparts without unnecessary put downs. A female isn't the de facto group leader, but a critical team component, and Maria Sten plays her character with strength, guile and intelligence.

I like your point thank you. I believe the main problem with female characters in comics is that they arent ever written by women in the first place so some have an unrealistic feel because thier lines and responses are written to push forward tbe story alone and dont nessesarily have any real personality in them. But changing silver surfer to a woman feels like a slap to the creators face, y diddnt they use silver surfer's nova instead? as a character she had an awesome ability as she was a mutant before galactus changed her and she isnt well known so they could have had her origin on another planet
