The problem is that the studio is more interested in promoting "the message" than telling a good story.
The Problem is the Writing. 'Nuff Said. 😞
Damn right.
And the acting, and the political agenda, and the continually comments of racism, sexism, Fascism, etc. etc. even before marvel is released with any movies it’s DOA……. The Director is the producer is the writers have forgotten that movie should be about entertainment, and not about pushing their own political agenda. Nuff said
Hot Take: Ed Norton is a better Hulk than Mark Ruffalo
THANK YOU!
He was, but he was also a terror to work with and a massive on set headache.
Idk why that movie gets so much hate I loved that shit
Nope😂
@@chrisonloc729because the Hulk was weak compared to 2003. Throughout the MCU he’s been handled poorly.
Funny point of fact, audience percentages for "The Marvels" are tracking over 60% male in target demo. So much for 'Muh misogyny', right? I'm almost sad you didn't see it. The depths of the cathartic rant would have been the stuff of legends!! 😆 Great stuff Jay!
They also saw Barbie in droves and Ken was the most lauded aspect of it. So as it turns out much to the furor of feminazis, women do in fact prefer the patriarchy.
Thank you for watching!
The same numbers and excuses for Elizabeth Banks' Charlie's Angels.
The Race and Misogyny card ain't working any more even hardcore female and male fans that I know in my city were laughing at the idea of going to watch it in the comment section of our theatre FB pages and people who watched it were warning others to not waste their money and I never saw that before with any other movie.
I mean how bad is the movie ? As bad as she hulk serie or Worst ? And How can you even make a movie worst than the she hulk series😂
The real MARVEL is that anyone thought this movie was a good idea.
I can't wait for the marvels 2.
I hear the girls really form a strong bond and all sync up with their period and really become formidable opponents!
Come on. We can make comments about the movie without being misogynistic. This ain't it.
Let’s be serious, the moment that light in Stark’s chest went out, so did the life out of the MCU!
I read Stark as Snark and it still made sense.
That is so true! Well said.
Beautifully put
I maintain that Captain Marvel only did well by virtue of the fact it was billed as build up to Endgame. Fast forward to now, Marvel has had more misses than hits as opposed to the 50/50 or 60/40 win-lose ratio previously, they have no grasp on what story they want to do or how to do it well, and Marvel/Disney made it abundantly clear they wanted to go the “Force is female” route like Star Wars did. Just like with Ghost Busters 16, Charlie’s Angels and Ahsoka, they went chasing after a demographic that is by and large NOT INTERESTED in comic book films (more men still saw this movie than women did, and Barbie did way better by comparison). So yeah, the audience Marvel thinks is out there doesn’t exist and they chased off everybody else that already was the core audience (not to mention the fact the characters they are pushing are ones that aren’t known as much or in general nobody likes regardless). And even if somehow they did get the numbers they wanted, the films and shows are mediocre at best, gutter trash at worse (Guardians 3 and No Way Home are not enough to save the Lusitania that is the MCU at this point in time). Hell, Godzilla: Minus One, a Japanese film where the budgets are considerably less than Hollywood’s, looks far better than most of Disney’s schlock these days. Heck Toho is so confident in the film that they moved up the US release date over a week than was originally planned.
Imagine if there had been no Hulk, or Thor, or Iron Man before Endgame and they pulled an actual popular character out to introduce instead of the Fem-icon repeated Comic failure. If it was the MCU Hulk Debut, it would have drowned Capt. Marvel's Box Office like a baby in the bathwater, fans would have been losing their minds, as it was, the all goodwill MCU fans just kind-of showed up to see what Capt. Marvel was all about, and they were OVERWHELMINGLY "Meh" in their reception and that's a fact.
@@korycassel5197 Correct
Not gonna lie I believe The Incredible Hulk (2008) was the best hulk adaptation we ever had. Sad we didn't get to see it in the avengers movie and other movies leading up to endgame. PS: To me the Marvels movie made me feel like I was watching the powerpuff girls but less enjoyable and less impactful.
Exactly I was thinking the same thing. The difference women like the powderpuff girls.
I agree. I liked that movie. I thought Edward Norton got closest to Bruce Banner's personality.
I decided to watch the original Iron Man to compare to the new Marvels, and it is like watching a Varsity Football game compared to a grade school game. There is nothing at stake in the Marvels, there is no gravitas, there is nothing to aspire to. It is like what "Sweet Like on Deck" with Zac and Cody. It is silly, not serious. It is something that causes you to yawn, not be thrilled about. Thanks Snarky for another brilliant monologue.
Thank you for watching, Christopher!
The Incredible Hulk is severally underrated. Edward Norton is the best Hulk. Just my hot take though.
I been saying this since jump: after Endgame, the MCU should've focused on the Netflix characters. Focus on the Defenders. Make some changes in the actors (we all know who needed to go) and focus on street level/ city level stories. Marvel got too bloated. They tried to be too ambitious and it backfired massively.
Would've been cool to see for sure.
Disney has gone from being a bunch of adults who make content for kids to a bunch of kids that make content for adults and somebody needs to tell them play time is over
_"Going to watch a MARVEL movie was once the kind of event that you'd go book a wax appointment for."_ 🤔
Wasn't it?
Hey Jay, I'm surprised you didn't bring up "Barbie", which was female focused but actually ended up appealing to everyone and either made close to or beat "The Mario Movie". You actually talked me into seeing Barbie from your review, and not only did I enjoy it in the theatre, but even bought it on digital.
They are already trying to push the narrative of us men being ists/phobes, etc, for giving "The Marvels" negativity, but then the statistics came out that mostly men went to see it. The media and Disney just can't hide behind the name calling anymore and have to face the fact that they made a bad movie.
in all fairness, "ists" on the internet have been spreading hate about this movie for over a year BECAUSE it had non-white & female leads... those are entirely NOT the reasons why it sucked though. so i think a lot of push-back is a reaction to that, & all of it, on both sides, only muddies the waters.
I'm so glad you ended up liking Barbie that much!
@@davidletarte214 There will always be those kinds of people but that is not the main hate towards this movie. It is a direct result of Disney's constant pandering. Hence the South Park episode.
There have been plenty of successful female led movies like Kill Bill, Wonder Woman, Charlies Angels (the early 2000's ones), or even Barbie actually, that have been successful that didn't push the diversity tag and were just either good or fun and catered towards everyone that didn't provoke fanbases to lash out at them.
@@dualisticmix sure, but south park went after the panderers as well as the haters alike so i don't know if that's the strongest example to use.
well barbie was just a good movie, the marvels is not. i don't know if one had a bigger diversity push than the other, they both have white women leads & plenty of POC. neither has a narrative about diversity though unless maybe i missed it i mean these are just characters straight from the comics.
for me the marvels is just safe. there are no stakes, they took absolutely no risks, it contains nothing i haven't seen before many times & nothing is earned by anyone. it's like being in the kiddie pool except with enough chlorine to melt my eyeballs.
@davidletarte214 Actually Barbie was the opposite. It had a hard feminist theme to it but it knew what it was made for which was a female audience. It did have similar negativity like the Marvels about the feminist theme but it also had masculine energy from Ken which made it entertaining to men like me which made it a fun movie for everyone and the creators never really lashed out at the audience. There was some from the media but the movies success and word of mouth overcame the negativity.
I almost didn't see it due to that negativity but word of mouth and certain reviews like Snarky Jay pushed me to give it a chance and I didn't regret it.
Hahaha 😂 this is one of those I told you so kinda videos Jay. You have been warning us of this potential failure for Marvel and I do think this is the biggest L they ever had. At this point, they should take a break on everything and regroup. When they stop caring about their core fanbase; this is the result. Just wait til Madam Web comes out. I love the editing you did here too. Great video my friend and can't wait for your next content. Have a lovely day!🌼
Thank you my friend! Much love to you.
Yeah, we all saw this coming. And it's going to get worse. Young Avengers is not going to work and it looks like Sony wants to go down with Disney with Madame Web or whatever it's called. Have to give props to not just Snarky, but Grace Randolph's video from maybe 3 days ago on what happened to the Marvels. I couldn't believe her take! One of the best videos on why these movies aren't working! And keep calling this crap out too Snarky! Props!
I think marvel knew it will flop so they just said nope we ain't spending more cash on the marketing 😂
Thanks to this madness of WOKE or whatever we will never really be able to tell if a movie could have succeed or failed due to merit.
You also need to remember the $55 million opening for Incredible Hulk was 2008 money. That is equal to almost $78 million today and it didn't have any IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and/or 3D showings like The Marvels had. Then the strike excuse doesn't work because Five Nights At Freddy's had no press at all and opened with $80 million on a budget of only $20 million. People didn't go see The Marvels because of the strike, superhero fatigue, lack of press, or misogyny. They didn't go because they weren't interested. Plus the marketing they did have was cringe.
Hulk SMASH!!!!!!! Hulk say Hulk had enough comparisons to The Marvels. Hulk say Hulk is still the man. Hulk say, why no one mention rate of inflation when talk about box office? Hulk say not only was Hulk badass in 2008, but Hulk blaze trail in 2003 with 62 million opening weekend before puny Ironman every came on scene. Hulk no like disrespect.
What's wrong with these movies is that, throwing people in costumes and telling people to love them just because the outfit is similar or close to the heroes that people specially man, been following since the first comic book and expecting the audience to be attached, when they can't even put a effort and check the original material it's really stupid. This comics already have their own plots and history, nobody can't change that. All you can do it's be fucking original and come up with your own superheroes. It's like the same with the superman thing, every fucking sup shoots fucking lasers out of their fuckiyeyes. Nobody can think of something original nowadays!
This movie only validated my point that i was having some 6 years ago with an Asian American feminist.
The conversation started off strange. I was doing rideshare via Uber. I'd picked her up late in the evening, to take her to her destination. She has this big suitcase that I'd put inside the trunk. She'd started off by saying hi and for some ofd reason, went into this conversation that felt like an explanation, saying, "I know that you're wondering, what in the world why i have a suitcase at this time of night." After saying that. She tells me that she was leaving a cosplay at the house where I'd picked her up at, where she'd dressed up as a 'Storm Trooper' from 'Star Wars.' To be frank. Her having luggage didn't cross my mind as odd. Nor did I care. But. After the explanation. It felt more like guilt to cover up some type of kinky role play for a John.
The conversation went from that, to us talking about comics and comic book movies. So immediately, she'd started out talking about representation for women and minorities. That was a red flag. When I'd told her that I'm not really about representation. She was caught off guard. At that point, she'd went on the defense and turned into a feminazi bitch. Very condescending, but in a passive aggressive manner. But I'd played along, to see what her angle or motive was about. I think that she was surprised because I'm a Black male. I'd told her that representation doesn't always equate to a good movie. I'm all about quality over representation quantity. Filling a quota nowadays is more about having an agenda that takes away from a good movie where for example, the female is the lead because it was meant to be and not forced. Your Pam Grier and Sigourney Weaver playing their characters, fit and was natural. When
I'm all about representation. But for a different reason.
Well Marvel keeps on making the same movies over and over thinking they will become hits.
Always speaking facts and the truth unlike some of these disingenuous Disney payed reviewers on this platform, great channel and great work you do keep it up🤙🏾
Thank you for your support!
You and the Critical Drinker are by far my favorite movie critics.
Thank you so much!

...I think I just fell in love with you.😍😄
Not even close to breaking even at 500 mill. They say advertising is usually the same as the actual budget. So they break even point is like 700 mill potentially
At least she grew her hair back out.. That Endgame haircut was abysmal
Flop is too kind. The Marvels is an unmitigated box office bomb that is in leagues with DCEU's bombs.
Makes me wonder if there could be another MCU movie that'll make less money than The Marvels.
I was hornswaggled into seeing Captian marvel. We were led to believe that it was a direct link to infinity war...a clever ruse to be sure
LMFAO they got you huh.
@@snarkyjay me, both of my sons, and my brother. My daughters and wife had the sense to say noooo
Other than the film itself for how it flopped in the box office, another significant factor (other than the actor strikes) is the repercussions of the choices made by the executives of Marvel and Disney (especially head honcho himself Iger) to increase the content after Endgame instead of scaling back both story and scale to steadily build up to the next big storyline of the multiverse, leading to increased mediocrity fatigue within the MCU.
Superhero fatigue is inevitable when studios flood the market with product - DC learned this the hard way with The Flash and Blue Beetle and now its Marvel's turn. I for one refuse to hand over my money to be lectured.
The Marvel's is a Breathtaking Masterpiece that will set your entire World on Fire!! 🔥.
Never before seen Special EFX that should ONLY be shown and consumed in IMAX Theaters.
Women UNITE!! Who needs Tony Stark or the AVENGERS? Don't miss out on the #1 Movie in America. The #1 Movie/Cinema experience of ALL TIME - The Marvels 🎉
Thank You for always using the Macho Man clip. It never misses!
Love the reviews Ms. Jay. You killed me with the Macho Man clip there 🤣👏👏
Hah, I'm so glad!
$17 a movie? Holy crap in glad I only do matinees
Kinda like eating the same food everyday but like EVERYDAY. Even if it's your favorite, gets to a point that it makes you sick .
Love your reviews Snarky!
Happy Friday Eve Jay!
You too Kaden!
"Marvel Trash Fatigue" lol, nailed it.
Yes, well, this is a current year Disney product we are discussing. Anybody expecting something with the quality of Citizen Kane were BOUND to be disappointed.
They claim that the sexist male demographic won't support a female led movie. Let's see - Katniss Everdeen of the Hunger Games, the first Wonder Woman, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Yep, I can think of a quite a few examples where the supposedly sexist male demographic enthusiastically supported female leads. Even so, men showed up more than women for this film. They blame the demographic that the film was not aimed at (men) for the failure of the demographic it was aimed at (women) to go see it.
"You would book a wax appointment for"
That could not be anymore true for marvel then
and now they're gonna cast Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards. They're never going to learn.
Keep in mind, for it to "break even", it actually has to earn *TWICE* its budget(combined production *AND* marketing), due to the fact that ½ of the grosses go DIRECTLY to the theaters before the studio gets ANY $$$. So, if The Marvels combined budget was $350M, then that means that it's gonna need to bring in at least $700MILLION just to "break even"....🤔 I don't see it coming even close to that🤷
I just love that you know how your channel works😊😅
?
How petty and sad of you to say, LMAO. I dress the same on and off camera because I love myself 🤷🏻♀️ I don’t need to “bait simps,” I actually have something to say.
Happy Friday Eve Jay.
Enjoy your Thursday, Alfred!
Great review! We actually saw The Marvels and actually spent the money for IMAX to give The Marvels every chance to shine. But unfortunately it did not. Your review was spot on and I’m glad you said the things that two
old white guys like us
couldn’t say. 😂 Thanks for keeping it real, you have 2 new followers. 👏🏻
As a woman in her 30s you'd think i'd be the target audience for this film and yet i have zero interest in ever seeing it. Marvel lost me right after Endgame (even though i felt that film wasn't the best either).
They hire people based on their identity rather than their talent. This will NEVER result in a quality product. There is no substitute for talent.
Well, what a shocker!...🤣🤣🤣. Marvel/Disney made a movie for those 15 activists on twitter and forgot the millions of real fans that gave up on this BS long time ago....😎😎
*46.1m final numbers. even lower! and if you guess average ticket of 12 bucks thats 3.5m tickets. hulk would have been 8 dollars per ticket or 7m tickets sold. yikes.
The promblem is that these movies need to make hundreds of millions of dollars to break even, but people dont go to the movies as often as they used to. I wish the film industry was different, but it seems like its going downhill fast.
So I just found out Captain Marvel (1st) movie made 1 billion. How does the sequel only do 50 mil? 🤔
Because it came before the endgame 😅
Maybe the Marvels is the real endgame😂
Good one 😂🤣
7:38 thirst alert!😂 You sexy sexy thing😂😂😂
I think that the MCU has spread itself too thin and seems to be looking for its lost soul in some kind of bizarre way. It seems at times that the MCU was so successful and made so much money that some of its big bosses started to feel ashamed by the fact that they " weren't able to become so successful while being more diverse and inclusive". Better scripts would definitely have helped.
Here’s hoping the next year where they’ll only have two MCU entries (Echo and Deadpool 3) they use that time to rethink their plans.
@Snarky Jay You forgot to add multiple reshoots, cast and crew pay also caused not able to make all tbeir expenses back.😂
I believe the real deal here is that the majority of the American film audience has simply had their full of comic book movies. We've had at least ten years of masks and capes. Too much of a (potentially) good thing. It's time to put the superheroes on the shelf for a while. True, this stuff will never totally go away. But even the biggest comic book fan would admit that the film industry has been overdoing the superheroes for at least the last two years. I know I'm bored with it, for sure.
I would totally understand, for a normal non-Marvel fan going to theaters. You see the title for a Marvel movie called The Marvels, like wtf is that.
What goes around comes around.
Marvel fans talked so much trash about the DCEU. Now look at em.
I'm glad I found this channel.
I was forced to watch "The Marvels" on a flight to Japan. The entire second act is the girls learning to jump rope double dutch.
it did and this was inevitable plus Disney must of anticipated this as well
If they're targeting people who still shop at Target, then they shoudln't be surprised their movie failed. It will never, ever, EVER be okay to walk into a Target store again.
If Brie Larson went out on a marketing tour the opening would have been significantly less than $47 million 😂
snarky Jay what do you think about the reboot of marvel's blade? Do you think it could save marvel cinematic universe
"Marvel Trash Fatigue" is absolutely the truth about "Superhero Fatigue". "Trash Fatigue" also works for much of current Star Wars.
The eyes.. they never lie Chico
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Theres a deleted scene that is promoting the MAP agenda BTW.
Almost all the source material Marvel is tapping into comes from older material - that is because over the last decade or so Marvel has let most of the quality writers go and decided to lean into style over substance.
The best Marvel movie to date remains the Winter Soldier and the reason is this. If you eliminate any pretense of individuals with super human abilities - the story holds. It is very well written. If you eliminate the super human elements of the Marvels, you have Nick Fury at the improv trying to sell kittens.
The last two of three Marvel movies didn’t break even either so it’s not exactly unheard of.
The Hollywood people should have a listen to Ben Folds "One Down." Take their time to get things right.
I was just listening to "Still" by him earlier!
The Marvels: 350 million dollar budget
Obi-wan: 90 million dollar
Thank you, customers are tired of paying more and getting less quality for their money.
Marvel has a quality issue, the productions are way over budget, the directors and script writers do not have a vision for their movies and shows. We know this because every time Disney comes out with a movie or series it’s plagued with rewrites and reshoots to try and make it barely watchable. And watchable is questionable.
These movies are not tightly written, the characters are cookie cutter, the humor is tedious and a lot of the time doesn’t fit with what is going on.
Plus every MCU movie feels pretty much the same.
Why would I pay money to see something I’ve already seen before only worse?
Remember that $47 million doesn't mean Disney made $47 million. It means, $47 million were spent on tickets... of which half goes to the movie theaters. So, Disney made about $23.5 million opening weekend. To break even, it will have to make about $750 million in ticket sales for its theatrical run. Very unlikely at this point.
True. Even worse!
I will not be surprise if the Marvels not reach the Flash’s entire box office run especially Hunger games prequel and trolls along horror movie Thanksgiving coming out this weekend in my opinion Marvels gonna have a big hugh drop off this weekend
Adjusted for inflation its even worse.
What makes this worse is ticket prices are higher than they were back in 2008.
Ed Nortan puts more effort as Bruce Banner than Mark Ruffalo.
They won't stop making these terrible films. The disney/marvel execs live in a social bubble where they think what they are doing is good and really don't understand they are patronising us 'plebs.'
50 million in 2008, adjusted for inflation equals around 70 million in 2023. Marvels did even worse than they are reporting.
Video idea in the future for you: reacting to all of macho man randy savage wrestling promos. You will have fun, laugh, and question his madness. Just enjoyable and entertaining.
Don't forget about the live cat streaming they did for promotion , that was genius 😃😃😃
Great video as ever!
Jay, could we ever get your thoughts on Echo it looks like it's been getting nice reactions from the trailer.
When you're right, you're right.
Photoshoot!!! Hellz yeah, you know I am a decent photographer, if you ever need one that works for cheap...as in coffee and donuts, let me know! 😀
I have a photographer, thanks though! 👍🏼
Love your videos keep up the great work, and stay snarky!!!
Color me SHOCKED...🙄
The bait n switch didn't work this time. Disney is like a Narcissistic Ex that gaslights their partner into chasing them for years.
I do think press junkets could have helped, because Iman Vellani is bonkers charming. I found "The Marvels" to be a 4/10 movie with one actress (actor as a whole, really) who goes well past "I still don't regret seeing it." Iman Vellani straight up carried this film.
Good video summary! Also didn't watch this movie yet either since I didn't like the first one and won't be supporting this one (I really hated every single MCU film since Endgame).
Sorry, super late on this but...are there any more 2024 calendars for sale?!?
- Make a movie - Announce that the target audience will not like - Swearing at the target audience beforehand or in the trailer itself - When the movie bombs, blame the target audience. - Make another film with the same standards.
Unfortunately, we no longer see accidentally bad films that were intended to make money. Batman and Robin was one of those films, bad by accident, because people who knew more about business than films decided to have their say in the production. Today we see films that are purposely bad for the target audience, not to make money, but people. It is no longer about money, but about indoctrination.
Mhmm … just realized … did Disney‘s MCU become the new DCEU? And if so … who‘s going to takeover Disney and scrap everything in order to restart the MCU? Who‘s going to be Disneys Gunn?
This is not a surprise to anyone, not even for Disney. They knew this film would bomb. They even cut the movie to be one of the smallest they've released. No one is really denying that Marvel is in some trouble. They understand the consequences of their dumb decisions and are trying to course correct. The question is if it's already too late.
If they make a soft reboot of the this mess of a universe and focus on writing, specially with the x-men, I think they can have another 10 more years of big movies.
As predicted! 🤣 At this point, it will do worse than DC's The Flash! 🤦🏻♂️😬 Marvel Studios/Disney really needs to back to back to what made Phase 1 great....Brie Larson is as annoying as Ezra Miller is too! 🙄
Also… I’d like to point out that 2 weeks prior to the release they started teasing that maybe RDJ was going to come back to marvel. Tons of TikTok people were playing interviews from before iron man 3 about people asking him if he would consider returning to the mcu.
