Thank you for watching the video, It means a lot to me .
I will leave this pinned message here to REMIND everyone that i do not have TELEGRAM and there is no GIVEAWAY. Those you see are bot scams . Keep yourself safe and know that I would not ask for your info. ❤ ❤
The song was about them not getting any airplay for their music
late to your video, and you probably already know what the song is about, but IMO, Rush is criticizing commercial radio for being corrupted by under the table money payments to radio stations/DJs to play songs/records to make money, whether or not the music is good/popular or not, and also to praise "pirate radio" stations for being heroes, and playing records that people want to hear, not what makes record companies money, they also didn't have to deal with censorship of songs, because they were broadcasting from boats/ships anchored in international water, first off the coast of UK, then off the coast of Canada
RIP Neil, a true legend who inspired SOOO many drummers of his time and will continue to for generations.
He inspired me to step up my game in lyrics, too.
Been playing the drums for 4 decades because of Neil. Playing the bass for 3 decades because of geddy!!
Go Canes!!!!
The Professor, RIP
As they say..."your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." 💯✌
Rush... so much can be said about this amazing band. One of their greatest lifelong achievements, was that they grew their fan base, the sold out arenas, they were respected and cherished by their peers, all without much radio play. Radio just continued to play "the hits" from bands throughout the years, and Rush didn't let that stop them for a single minute. They gained fans (not so much music critics, the dregs of the musical world), they toured as as the same band for over 40 years, gained a huge following from every corner of the globe, for generations of family members, all because they didn't compromise for a quick buck. They gave 110% every single show. They treated each fan as if they meant the world to them and never forgot the fans when they did become more well known. 3 of the most talented musicians to ever play an instrument, and never let it go to their heads. It's worth watching some interviews with them. It's worth watching the documentaries made about them. And it's worth listening to more of their stuff. It's not for everyone, but even if you don't become a fan, you still respect the way they master their music and treat other humans. When people ask "who is Neil Peart?", the best answer I've heard was "he is your favorite drummers favorite drummer!" Kiitos! 🤗🤘🏼
Well said I remember a Rolling Stone interview with Eddie Van Halen and the interviewer said to Eddie what's it like to be the best guitarist in Rock Eddie said go ask Alex Lifeson
@@robertboston7872 I remember that answer and yeah, that stuck with me. It's a touching and worthwhile comment on Alex's playing. Eddie throughout the years has always surprised me by his super positive comments and actions towards other musicians. All people could focus on went from how he burst on to the scene as this godlike shredder straight into his marriage of all things. I don't think the "real" Eddie was ever first and foremost, it was always, to me anyway, superficial praise of him. Another of his touching stories, which really became a huge story after he passed, was him placing one of his prized guitars into dimebags coffin, after years of him trying to buy it from Eddie. And no one really ever talked about how good of a father he was to Wolfgang. I'm sure his ex is equally guilty raising such an outstanding, intelligent and hugely talented son. But again, gossip always got in the way.
Thank you for this. I feel like I just learned something essential to life. I've heard the name Neil Peart before but didn't know where. I used to look for drum solos online though to calm my eldest son down when he was crying, so maybe that's where.
@@millerbeer8743 An irony related to the story you told is that once Rush got on the radio (rock radio anyway), radio couldn't get enough of them. Even in 2013 my local station in Phoenix was playing stuff from 'Clockwork Angels' [The Anarchist to be specific]. It just blew my mind given all the trends that occurred w/in the genre that Rush still had a toehold in the new millennium that only fell off when the band finally broke up.
@@robertboston7872 I remember that interview. I heard a similar thing from a few guitarists. Alex was a low-key GOAT apparently.
Rush is the most technically instrumental 3 piece band ever. This song was released in 1980
Try ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be.
The time changes and apparent style/song changes are meant to represent 'changing the dial' ( moving from one station to another) on the old analog radios.
It is 2024... FOUR years since Neil passed....I still get choked up at the end...the drum set and 'in loving memory of our brother'..... anyone else?
The song is on one level happy and uplifting, but also has a cynical side in its observations of the how the music industry operated. And, yes, there's a little Reggae thrown in near the end. The idea behind the song's many transitions was to emulate changing a radio dial. Though the song was from 1980, the animated video was created recently to celebrate its 40th anniversary. As a result, there are many historical references about radio and the band itself. One of the featured DJs, Donna Halper, was instrumental in giving Rush its first real break in the USA. The brain in the jar you noticed was a reference to the album Hemispheres (and how our brains are divided: logic vs. creative). There is A LOT to unpack in the video.
Interesting take on the time changes emulating radio dial change. I like it! Though the band is littered throughout there history with time changes. Best ever to do it. Also reggae would be hinted from this point on for the next two albums.
The link is radio!! The most wonderful gift to music.
Welcome to planet Rush. Better strap yourself in for the ride of your life 🙂
My favorite band ever. You keep listening and you'll see why.
This song came out long before you were born....it is just the celebration of magic of FREE radio...for EVERYONE!!!
Congratulations! You just discovered the best drummer in the universe. RIP Neal.
Me and a few friends we had our own webradio station for about 12 years. And "Spirit of radio" was the opening song for my show.
Rush were around for a very long time ...1968 to 2015...3 incredibly gifted musicians who will always live in my heart...welcome to a very big rabbit hole!
just a bit of a back story about this song for you, Neil Peart wrote this song (also he wrote most of Rush's songs) about how Radio and bands are selling out to commercial corporation, the idea came to him while driving (back to my home town, he is from the area I was born and raised lol just throwing that in there) home from Toronto, he was coming down the Burlington Skyway listening to a Toronto radio station (102.1 CFNY) and was not happy with what the stations new format was (commercialism)
With the last couple of lines mimicking The Sound of Silence.
Your analysis was correct! This was released in 1980 on the Permanent Waves album! Watch them live!!!
Nothing unites countries more than music… “Spirit of radio”.. classic great song.. love rush
It is amazing ❤️
1.) Neil Peart aka every drummers favorite drummer.
2.) It should be illegal to be this adorable and cute, but I'm actually pretty glad it's not illegal because those hand talking part just made my day.
The best band out of Canada 🇨🇦
The 'BRAIN IN THE JAR' is a reference to the Rush Album 'HEMISPHERES'.
Gotta love Rush for acknowledging all the people (I mean... Who does that!??) that recognized how potentially good they could be and gave them airplay in their formative years..
RIP Neal. You now rest with your wonderful wife and daughter. (God, I'm tearing up just writing this.)
Subdivisions and Tom Sawyer.....two iconic songs of RUSH.
Thank you so much Biss for giving Rush a chance! They are my favorite band of all time! I have been blessed to see them live probably 8 times. These were 3 hour shows, not these 90 minute sets that exist today. They would take you on a journey and leave you so happy. Really hope you enjoy young lady! Be well, be happy and be safe! God bless you and all your friends here!
This is the best song about music of all time
RIP Neil! This has to be one of the best songs ever written. This song is timeless.
Rush put me in a trance 48 years ago and I'm still in that trance and will be for the rest of my life.
Check out Neal Peart's drum cam from his solo with Rush in Frankfurt. I think you'll be impressed by his technical prowess in a variety of genres.

RUSH is wise lyrics, pauses in every energetic music, and three guys with bass, guitar, drums, and synthesizer. This song is about radio being free, but man is trying to add to it all the things salesmen and businesses want to get their hands on. Yet the message and the freedom we have wins in this one.
Thanks for sharing your reaction to The Spirit of Radio!
This is a popular song that Rush released in 1980. Their first full album was released in 1974 and they continued making music as a band through 2012. They released 19 studio albums and 11 live albums, 14 of which went platinum in the US (and 17 went platinum in Canada). They had three multi-platinum albums and were nominated for seven Grammy awards.
They are phenomenal musicians.
Great song!! As a proud Canadian myself, Rush is a GREAT EXPORT. Hugely popular in the 70's/80's and a little through the 90's.. The drummer Neil has passed a while ago, but the other Teo members are still living.n🇨🇦🇨🇦
Brilliant musicians!
Right?❤️
The video is a wonderful tribute to the actual radio DJs that spread Rush’s music in the early days-the names they show are real people that played and promoted Rush songs when they were unknown. In particular they show Donna Halpern who played their records when no one else would. It’s quite touching.
How often have you gotten in car starting your day turning on the radio to your favorite station. Then that perfect song come on.makes your day. Thats what it is about
My favorite station 97.5 krock st johns nl canada
In case you were wondering what that “talking hand” motion I guess what you call it was, Geddy used to do that live to signal everyone to sing along with him and my god was it freaking incredible. When I say EVERYONE sang along, I mean EVERYONE. There will never be another band like Rush man. 40 years, 3 of the same friends for practically all of it. And of course Rest in piece to Neil Peart…one of the best drummers there ever was.
Be careful. Rush might change your life if you go deep. Greatest collection of musicians ever.
Neil Peart's lifetime in music and images...❣❣❣🕯
This is from the album that started my musical appreciation of Rush. Permanent Waves is still my favorite Rush album. But, they all are great. Loved your reaction. 😊😊❤❤
I was a much later acolyte of Rush (Roll the Bones was the one that got me into them), but Permanent Waves is one of my "PERFECT" albums. Every song is at least good, and almost every song is great! "Different Strings" I enjoy, but it doesn't thrill me. Every other song on the album is absolutely amazing! "Natural Science" is in my top 5 Rush song of all time!
Rush was around making music 1968 - 2018. This song was released in 1980.
Very cool.
This is modern as there were no widespread music videos in 1980
Yes, it's a brain in a jar. A wonderful in-joke for all Rush fans (and fans of Steve Martin).
i saw RUSH at my home coming dance at Clarke high school.im 68 yrs.old.
the brain in the jar is a reference to the cover art of their 1978 album "Hemispheres" There are several album cover easter eggs in the video.
Amazing band!!!
Great reaction! The reason the video started off with a radio signal going from Canada to Italy is because the patent for radio was given to Guglielmo Marconi and Rush was from a suberb of Toronto Canada. The first verse is "Begin the day with a friendly voice a companion, unobtrusive plays the song that’s so elusive and the magic music makes your morning mood" which means someone is getting into their car to go to their job and they turn on their radio to listen to music. The band members dreamed of making it big as a band so they could change the world with the message their lyrics offered. They worked hard, practiced, made contacts, worked in dives trying to build an audience and a name and then when they finally get a record contract the record executives start bribing the radio stations to make sure they play their music more often and the radio stations offer prizes so the listeners will listen and call in to play. The verse "One likes to believe in the freedom of music but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity" means that the band was disgusted with the business side of the music business because they couldn't tell if they were popular because the fans liked their message or because the fans were trying to win prizes because they were getting played more than other bands. They weren't competing fairly so it shattered their integrity. Rush is a very deep band and they have a lot of messages. You should listen to the songs "The Trees", "Manhattan Project", "Territories", "Mission", the full 20 minute version of "2112", "Subdivisions", "Tom Sawyer", "New World Man", "The Body Electric", "Red Sector A", "Freewill" and a 9 minute drum solo called "Der Trommler"!
What a band, what a song. Yours is a very astute observation of one part having a Reggae feel to it. Excellent chair-dancing, ha! Glad you liked it.
At last you’re listening to some real music 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Nice reaction, you definitely enjoyed it, Rush were absolutely magic!
Definitely take in some more Rush!
The brain in the jar is a reference to their album titled "Hemispheres".
Bonus -- in this video, Rush pay tribute to the radio employees who helped put Rush on the map, particularly Donna Halper. There was a core of believers in Rush's early days who worked their asses off alongside the band, and the band never forgot them. I've never seen a band do a video that puts the spotlight on the DJs who believed in them like that.
Your musical senses were spot on ! RUSH released this song on 1980 on the album, "Permanent Waves." RUSH is a power trio from Canada and had a 40 plus years career. This song is a tribute to the radio and all the great styles of music that one could hear when listening to it, (especially on long, cold, winter nights in Canada). 😊 Thus, the different musical genres in the song, (Yes, there was a nod to reggae as well). Try "Ghost Of A Chance", from their ROLL THE BONES album. It's a nice groove! 🎵
are you aware that the reggae section is also a nod to Simon & Garfunkel The sounds of silence ? "the words of the prophets were written on the subway walls, and tenemant halls"
" and echoes with the sounds of silence" ( i forgot that part )
Check out the guitar solo- it is intended to sound like a rolling radio knob scrolling through the different radio stations/frequencies.
Best Band ever!!!!
The reggae sound was influenced by the band the Police. The drummer Neal was the writer of the lyrics and he loved the Police.
You have a good eye for detail, young woman! 😀 I'd never noticed that brain in the jar myself before 😄 I assume it refers to their 'Hemispheres' album cover, just like the movers carrying those crates are connected to the one of their 'Moving Pictures' album. But there's possibly also some other symbolism behind a brain in a jar 🙂
And thank you for your good, positive vibes! 😊👍☀️
As someone who listened to this great band back when they first blew out of Toronto, I can tell you that they crush all the normal mundane genres of rock we have today. Rush is Rush. There isn't a mediocre song in their entire repertoire. Back in the 60's and 70's, we had but two categories of Rock & Roll: "Right On!' and "Yeah, OK." The Spirit of Radio lets you know how we got our music. We had albums back then, 8-track and cassette tapes came later but it was transistor radios, car radios if the station was AM, that we got the music we traveled with. Blazing down the highway with the radio cranked, hoping the DJ had your favorite song queued up next. However, once it started getting commercialized and corporate in the 80's, it lost its charm. By then new products like the Walkman and Diskman (and various imitators) came on the scene so people had control of the music and not beholden to the whims of corporate pre-recorded playlists. Those early days were fun though. Just sitting on the banks of a lake with your crew, rubber inner tubes floating around filled with half-drunk buddies usually holding a can of cheap beer. The radio not only gave us music, it also let us know when concerts were coming to a nearby town or some news about an upcoming album or new group. The whole vibe was chill, no overload of petty tabloid bullshit just sitting around a campfire by the lake talking shit (and taking shit) from all your friends. Thanks for the great reaction! I love your take on the songs I grew up with. Take care and Gaea's blessing upon you!
According to my music, this one was on the album Permanent Waves in 1980
Rush-from Canada-musicians first-performance oriented tunes and they evolved into the one of the most successful bands of all time over a 40+year period by never compromising their music or values as human beings and individuals. They constantly recorded and toured and pushed the boundaries of popular music with experimentation and technological advances.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦👌👍
I just realized after 40 years that the song type changing is like changing channels on a radio.. Gosh!
Yes, Neil, the drummer, was a huge fan of Reggae and world music as reflected in this song. Love
The change in music styles/timing was supposed to represent changing the radio station. The song was a tribute to independent radio stations that would play little known bands like RUSH. RUSH refused to engage in "payola" to get their songs on the radio. "It's really just a question of your honesty" was directed at radio stations and record labels that engaged in "pay to play" to promote mediocre music. Sometimes the payments weren't in cash they could be free tickets to concerts, meeting band member, or band merch.
I would suggest their Rock opera "2112" and "Red Barchetta" they tell storys that may come to pass.
I first heard Rush as a freshman in high school, and my first rock concert was for their "A Farewell to Kings" tour, in 1977. Over the years, I saw Rush between 20 & 25 times, and they are one of my favorite bands. Their concerts were EPIC, and you knew the band put everything they had into the concert, because after the concert, the fans were both exhausted and exhilarated! This video is both a history of Rush, as well as a tribute to their friend, lyricist, and drummer of 40 years, Neil Peart (RIP.) The video shows among other things, how they were "discovered" in the US by a Cleveland, OH radio station, and they became what's been called the greatest "cult band" of all time, because they rarely got radio air-play, the critics hated them (especially Rolling Stone Magazine,) but they were loved by the people who would come to their concerts. The scene in the video with the young boy driving the red convertible represents Neil as a youngster, driving a car that was featured in a song he would later write, called "Red Barchetta." There are so many scenes in this video that are interesting to new listeners, but bring smiles and memories to the long-time Rush fans. This song became one of Rush's biggest hits.
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
*RUSH RULES!!!*
Best band, musicians and lyrics EVER!
Definitely check out, Rush in Rio, "YYZ."
💜💫✌🏼🎵
Miss you, every day, Professor.
Marconi who invented radio was from Italy, Rush is a group from Canada, Pirate (free?) Radio occurred in Great Britain. Music for the radio was chosen to make money...not what the artist might have wanted. The music changes in the song as you change channels on the radio.
Switched the sound Reggae like a radio!
❤️
This video was a Neal Peart tribute that came out after his death.
Regarding hidden messages and the imagery in the video that is a VERY deep rabbit hole to explore. The video contains tiny bits about the entire history of radio, reference to many specific people involved, it shows many of the instruments the band used, and there are visual references to every album the band released.
Hello there from the land of Rush fanatics. First, Italy and Marconi, the inventor of the radio. When the album Permanent Waves was released (the Spirit of radio is only one of the great songs) I was probably about your age. It was not played alot on the radio, however, rush fans were blown away. Try the whole album. Next is Free will, thank you for sharing your reaction to this amazing band and song. Practically every musician alive today was influenced by rush
Canada greatest rock band and Neil pert was one of the greatest drummers of all time
he's driving a red barchetta in the first few seconds.. nice
This brought a much needed smile to me today! 😊 I love seeing the younger generation enjoying and appreciating the classics. In my adult years my favorite bands have become blink-182 and Linkin Park, but I grew up with this music, and this is one of my favorite songs (and bands) from my youth. Loved seeing your reaction and appreciation…your smiling and “seat dancing” were awesome and said it all! 🤟🏼
Pirate Radio, were a couple of large ships sitting just outside the territorial waters of Britian, playing Rock and Roll, as it was basically band in Britan at the time. The government of the day tried everything they could to get them off the air, but failed, as "Radio Caroline" continued until 1991, then became an internet station and continues today.
Rush was and remains the thinking person's rock & roll, both in terms of the groundbreaking complexity, technicality, and enduring quality of their musical compositions and the philosophical, literary and poetic content of their lyrics.
Brains are from the album cover hemispheres in about 1978 that followed on the story from Farewell to Kings with cygnus X-1. Within the video there are lots of symbols from the different Rush records. Watch them live
I see ❤️
I ❤️ that you’re doing the ‘hands’ thing 🤘🏽✊🏽🤟🏼🙌 adorable 🥰 Have been a fan of RUSH for 40yrs and fan of yours for 5 minutes. We all start somewhere
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
Gary
The multiple change-ups were meant to represent what it was like listening to the radio in the days of analog tuners, when you could discover many different genres of music with a simple turn of the dial, and that iconic guitar riff was meant to represent the static between stations. And just a little 411 from the video: the hand gestures were what Geddy would use to get the crowd fired up, which he eventually replaced with clapping over his head; Le Studio was where Permanent Waves and their subsequent album Moving Pictures were recorded - the official music videos for Tom Sawyer and Limelight were filmed right in the studio during their recording sessions; the car that Neil is driving in the first verse is a Red Barchetta, referring to another track from Moving Pictures, for which I recommend the Exit Stage Left performance.
🎤🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
The music video has imagery from Rush's numerous album covers. (The late) Neil Peart (drums) wrote the lyrics to 'Spirit of radio' as a reflection of how the medium had evolved from the early days they would listen to music until 1980.
It was radio that got Rush noticed in Cleveland, Ohio when a radio station picked their song 'Working man' in 1974 and it got the Canadian trio signed to a US record label.
When Rush began recording this album in 1979/ '80, the band members started getting into new wave music by The Police, Joy Division, etc. and they wanted to record a 'fun' album that was not so musically demanding and serious as their previous records... they also incorporated reggae and electronic sounds into their music for the first time. Rush's music has always appealed to the "brainy" crowd... not the pop fans who want boppy lyrics on love & romance... Peart loved to write very deep and personal lyrics, as well as fantasy themes and such. Rush also wrote very strange songs as far as musical compositions.
Some songs u might enjoy by Rush - 'Tom Sawyer' ...'Closer to the heart' ... 'Subdivisions' ... 'Fly by night' ... 'Freewill'... 'Mystic rhythms'... 'Bravado'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
CFNY-FM, now 'The Edge', was the station whose slogan, 'The Spirit of Radio' is referenced in the title. They were a mostly punk/new-wave/"alternative" or "indie" ( before either term was current) station just outside Toronto, perhaps the first local one to give Rush some love despite their sound being different from most of their playlist. btw, the drummer/lyricist's name, Peart, rhymes with ears or feared. Welcome, ttys.
Your command of English is impressive. I love how you roll your r's. Keep doing what you do. ❤
So happy to see you and more people around the world are still discovering RUSH over so many years. Many good songs to explore.
iT WAS RELEASED IN 1980 ... SOME 42 years ago.
Some "Thirty seconds to mars" would be great too❤
SO much sound from just three people!
Having a wife and daughter who are drummer never a day goes by that you don't hear Rush in the house.
The brain in the jar is probably a reference to their "Hemispheres" album which came out right before their "Permanent Waves" album, which features this very song. Look at the original "Hemispheres" album art, and you'll immediately understand why.
All I knew from Rush is a character from the sitcom Goldbergs and that show is set in the 80's. I enjoyed this song and I think more Americans like myself need to know the message in this song. We all have opinions and lets have some joy. A band I should also check out like I did with Tool and Distrubed.
The radio for me growing up was my comfort.
you should check out the drum solo of neil peart in frankfurt he is known as the professor because he retaught himself how to play the drums. always learning to play his cfraft of the drums
Great reaction, especialy with the hand gesture, that was cute.
Rush had been a great influence to prog metal bands and just to think that they were a trio and made such complex and full sounds is amazing.
Definilty listen to "Tom Sawyer", "2112", "Subdivisions" and my personal favourite "Red Sector A" Live Grace under pressure tour.
Neil Peart (RIP) was one of the greatest drummers ever played the instrument and the gentlest soul ever.
Saw Rush 18 times ! Hey, Rush is best live. Check out the live performance of this song from the Maple Leaf Gardens concert,1984. Also want to recommend these songs from the Exit Stage Left concert:. Freewill , Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato.
Those "elements" as you call them are references to previous albums / album art. The animation of this new video to this 1980 tune is full of "elements".
I see, thank you
Rush was a huge band from Canada and has still many true Rush fans. Neil Piert was the drummer who recently died. There were only 3 in the group. Check out the song Tom Sawyer to hear more of their unique sound. Don't concentrate on the lyrics so much but enjoy the music.
Live version is Great!!
That green looks great on you.
The song is about things like listening to the radio late at night or driving to work in the morning when you are often alone, it is about music and how it makes you feel, it is also a dig at corporate radio of the 80s, This song was recorded in 1979 and released as a single in 1980 when everybody listened to the radio still. Neil Peart was the drummer of Rush who died in 2020 RIP Neil, The video is a new interpretation of the song
The song is 42 years old. Released in 1980.
The drummer for this band pretty much influenced every metal drummer on the planet.
This band has been around since the early 70's. Everyone knows this band.
The brain you saw in the jar may have been a reference to the brain on the album cover of their Hemispheres album. They were together from the early 70s until drummer Neil Peart's death a few years back. Neil joined them beginning with the second album and the trio stayed together all that time.
There will never be another band like Rush in our lifetime. Still miss Neil. Rest In Peace, Professor.
I like the subliminal Red Barchetta in the video
It always amazes people when they find out it’s only three guys that can jam on many instruments and make this awesome sound
