      Yep. Nirvana had been around a few years by then, but once this song hit music as we knew it from the 80s was OVER. Literally, within a few months, Grunge was the biggest thing on the planet. I loved it, because metal at the time became extremely boring and formulaic. Just like music is today.

      @@mregobuster Not ALL metal. I mean the commercial hair metal that was in the late 80s and early 90s. It's not boring now, but back then it became a parody of itself. Every band looked and sounded very similar, and every band had a formula. They would have one rocking song, then one ballad for the radio. There were dozens of hair metal bands doing that same thing over and over. It was fun in the mid-80s, but by 1991, it became stale.

    Nirvana was one of the greatest bands to ever rise in the early 90s. Simple yet highly energetic and Kurt was an assassin with his music. So many great songs. What a time to witness. You should react to Aneurysm definitely one of Nirvana's best songs

    Nirvana was a very simple, effective and heavy band... closer to punk rock than heavy metal, but still heavier than most bands.
    Some of their biggest songs are - 'Lithium' ... 'Come as you are' ... 'Heart-shaped box' ... 'In bloom' ... 'Aneurysm'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
    Their song 'Something in the way' is a haunting track, featured in the new movie 'The Batman'.
    There are some acoustic songs that Nirvana recorded for 'MTV Unplugged' - 'The man who sold the world' (David Bowie cover) ... 'About a girl' (Unplugged version)... 'Where did you sleep last night?' (Leadbelly cover).

      It just hit hard after a decade that was mainly known for synth pop and hair metal. Obviously there was a lot more to the 80's than those two genres but they dominated the charts and after a decade of that the public was ready for something simple and heavy and here came Nirvana just in time to fill that need.

    Good reaction, Bisscute....and I really love the outfit, btw...lol. 😊 But just to add some context, this song changed the game when it came to 'rock' --- it was the song that basically killed the 'Glam Rock' 1980s era, and officially began the mainstream movement of the Grunge Rock (Alternative Rock) era of the 1990s to today (and yes, there were other bands such as 'The Pixies' that were doing Grunge Rock years prior around 1987 etc, but Nirvana was really the first to bring Grunge Rock to the mainstream, hitting #1 on the Billboard charts).
    Anyway, this song and 'Nirvana' represent the voice of the 1990s Gen-X generation...as did Biggie Smalls and Tupac. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the Gen X anthem...lol

Nirvana completely changed the musical landscape. 3 members, 3 chords, gritty vocals/guitar and a don't-give-a-shit attitude blew a lot of us away back in 91. One of the pieces that changed music-history and made Nirvana a cult.
    This music is called "Grunge" or "Seattle Sound", and is a later genre of "alternative rock". It stood in contrast to all this glam-rock-band like "Europe" or "Bon Jovi" and adressed more difficult themes like social alienation and self-doubt.
    The song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is about a perfume, that kurt cobains girl friend used. In wider context it is about the hollow promises of the advertising industry for a young generation, that is lost in meaning (that' my interpretation).

    The best thing about this one, is Weird Al's parody, Smells Like Nirvana, which is _amazing_ on so many levels.
    Historically, a "mulatto" was usually a person who was half black and half white, or occasionally a person of mixed race in general. The term has not been in widespread use for quite some time and would probably be perceived as derogatory or otherwise inappropriate these days, if used to refer to an actual person or even a fictional character. Nirvana got away with it mostly because they clearly didn't use it for its meaning (it's in the middle of a word salad), and perhaps also because their target audience consisted mainly of disaffected teenagers, who were unlikely to either know the word, or bother to drag out a dictionary and look it up. (This was before most people had internet access, but after most high school English classes stopped teaching books that had words like "mulatto" in them, albeit with an occasional special exception for the N word in Huck Finn because of how blatantly egalitarian and anti-slavery that book is.)

Unfortunately, although craving adoration, unable to actually feel he deserved it or be comfortable with it, due to adaptive strategies formed from feelings of rejection in his formative years, as his parents seemed to fight over who had to take him. Please do more.... And maybe some Deftones (Change or My Own Summer) or System of a down (Sugar, Spiders or Chop Suey) Love the reactions 😁👌You can see when you feel the music, its nice.

    Cobain and his band grew up in Aberdeen, Washington, a small coastal fish and lumber town with neighboring towns of Hoquiam and Cosmopolis forming a total population of about 20,000. Obviously to make it big, you need to at least go to the regional big city. In this case that is Seattle. A lot of folks call this music Seattle grunge rock, but the genesis is actually the town of Aberdeen (notice the A on the cheerleaders uniforms in this video). Cobain’s ashes were scattered in the river near his home, and a small park is there in his name.

    Again there are many comments answering the questions, but I need to rant, so here: This song is about what the Japanese call "moe," a child coming into adult hood, and all the trauma and confusion you experience. The title comes from a brand of deodorant marketed to teen girls at the time call "Teen Spirit," spirit having a connotation of scent, but also your "soul," your energy, your mental state, so this song is both "emo" and "comic" at the same time. To that taken to the logical limit, see Weird Al's parody "Smell Like Nirvana," which is a shot for shot video using most of the original actors on THE ORIGINAL SET. A "mulato" is a person of mixed blood (parentage), in particular African and European. An "albino" is someone born with a genetic condition which limits pigmentation in their skin, which can seem white or translucent. Both represent someone who is not seen as "normal" in their culture, in some ways an outcast, but more just a feeling of not belonging. "Mosquito" is of course the blood-sucking insect, and "libido" is the sexual drive or urge, which teens are experiencing for the first time. The 4th member of the band is their producer Butch Vig, who also produced Smashing Pumpkins and many others, and is the drummer for the band Garbage. Dave Grohl (yes that Dave) the drummer and Krist Novoselic the bassist had reservations about this song, which they thought sounded too much like the Pixies, but Butch understood what Kurt was trying to do, got Dave and Krist on board, and they all, together, produced this masterpiece of music. The "ererer" on the guitar is something that Kurt threw in because it is NOT a note, it's noise, again representing the outcast feeling of teens. "We're here now. Entertain us" is something Kurt used to say when he arrived at parties as a form of false bravado so that the others would not see his anxiety. And a dozen other things I can't remember right now. Oh, and Kurt, well the whole band, were listening to Killing Joke's latest album at the time called Night Time (Kurt's favorite band and rightfully so), which led to accusations of plagiarization, but that's another story.

      There’s also a drug reference to mulatto albino mosquito libido…
      Mulatto = dark heroin (has a mixed brownish color)
      Albino = white heroin
      Mosquito = prick from needle aka drawing blood
      Libido = feeling/high afterwards
      Your interpretation was spot on too. Kurt often wrote in very ambiguous terms that were seemingly nonsensical but you could parse out different meanings depending how you looked at them.

    [5:25] A mulatto is a person of mixed race, usually Black and Caucasian. And then an albino is of course the extreme opposite.

    Mulatto = a person of mixed white and black ancestry, especially a person with one white and one black parent.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit expresses anger at a world dominated by the greed of businessmen, but also at the inability of a generation to build a viable alternative. It is a reaction to the impossibility of carrying out a youth revolution, the song was renamed "the hymn of the apathetic boys" of the infamous Generation X, in a world obsessed with success, choose defeat was revolutionary.
    The text is cryptic, like everything written by Cobain, an avid reader of William Burroughs, who was the father of psychedelic beat writing, and cut-up, a form of composition that consisted of mixing up different pieces of text and putting them back together in random order. So looking for real meaning in Nirvana's lyrics is pointless, but inside there are deep tracks that tell us a lot about one of the greatest musicians of our time.

    I’m not religious, I don’t believe in god. But I feel Kurt was a gift to people looking for a different kind of music at that exact time. Though it was short lived, Kurt and Nirvana were the best gift at that time in music history.
    The early 1990’s to late 1990’s gave us some great rock/punk music. Nirvana considered themselves punk. Kurt’s lyric writing is legendary. Even if you don’t like their music (some find it too hard), read the lyrics, they are legendary.
    Music today sucks.

    The name of the song: The story goes that Kurt was out one night, hanging out with a girl from another band (Bikini Kill) they ended up in a motel room where she wrote on the wall "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit". Teen Spirit was a popular girl's deodorant at the time and it was used by her band mate who Kurt was dating.

    A mulatto is a person with 1 black parent and 1 white parent. Apparently it's an offensive word nowadays, because it comes from the slave times.
    I had no idea. My family (we live in Denmark) never used it as anything but a positive, since we felt that they were very often beautiful people.
