    As you listen to Rush, you have to remember this is a trio where each member is one of the best with their instrument. Rush are known for their tempo changes. Seeing one of their live videos shows just how versatile they were. Geddy switches from bass to keyboards and sometimes plays synth with his feet while performing the craziest bass riffs. Check out YYZ in Rio or Working Man in Cleveland.

    • @AKJACKAL99709
      @AKJACKAL99709 Před 2 lety +4

      Technically, most changes they made were time signature changes, not tempo changes. As a drummer, this is an important distinction for me.
      Tempo (sometimes also called the meter) is usually expressed on this song usuing the term "Allegro" and annotated by a quarter note equal to 135 beats per minute. That is what one would normally set a metronome (click track) to.
      In this song, they go to a "half-time feel" quite a few times. To the pure listener it sounds like they are going half as fast in that break, but in reality the tempo is the same. On drums, this can be done merely by playing the snare on beat four only instead of on two and four. In the case of that reggae feel that Aileen noted, the sole snare hit happens on beat 3.
      Time signature is how those beats are divided up, shown in what looks like a fraction. The top number is number of beats in a measure, and the bottom is the subdivision. Most rock is in "common time" or 4/4, which means four quarter notes each measure. Rush (and other progressive groups) will throw in a measure of 3/4 or 5/4 here and there , or even do whole verses alternating 3/4 and 4/4 (which some folks just count as 7.)

    Rush's YYZ is one of my favorites, and is done really well live in Rio. You can see Geddy Lee's stacks of washing machines that he got as a joke aimed at the guitarist Alex Lifeson's amps. Occasionally you'll see a guy in a chicken suit come out and mess with the machines while they're playing. Rush is easily one of my favorite bands because of their unique sound and their pure talent and skill in musicianship. Great band, and I'm glad to see you finally check them out!

    • @AndrewD3382
      @AndrewD3382 Před 2 lety +4

      He also used the props as a way to balance out the stage. Geddy played direct line into the sound board, he had no amps onstage. In order to balance the stage setup opposite Alex's stacks, they contrived the washing and rotisserie machines to keep it all even.

    My daughter and I did this song back on January 25, 2021. Rush was one of my dad's favorite bands. He would listen to them all the time, so, naturally, I also became a Rush fan growing up. After he saw our reaction to it, and me passing that on to my daughter, he called me and told me he loved the reaction and we had a long amazing talk. Not even a month later, he was in the hospital with Covid. He was put on a ventilator never to wake up. I consider our reaction the last real moment we had together, even though we were 320 miles apart at the time.
    In the end, I can't not click on a good Rush reaction. They always hit me right in the feels.

    Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song

    RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
    With heart felt admiration and sincerity!

      @@Matty0923 so this was the 2nd time I’d seen them on the Hemisphere’s Tour, the first being March of that year. It took multiple listens to truly appreciate Hemispheres (my favorite Rush album) but when I heard Spirit of Radio, I was immediately smitten with the song. The night before the Permanent Waves release there was a syndicated radio preview, and I instantly remembered Spirit of Radio when it played. To me, it’s the perfect Rush song, especially when introducing Rush to new listeners. It’s in my top 3 including La Villa Strangiato, Xanadu and Spirit of Radio. How ‘bout you?

      @@conchrepublictheband The first time I saw Rush was Moving Pictures tour I believe I was 14. Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato are definitely 2 of my favorite Rush songs also. I'd say my favorite 5 Rush albums are 2112, Moving Pictures, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres and Permanent Waves. I'd put these consecutive 5 albums against any 5 albums from any other group. Clockwork Angels was a great album and a perfect way to go out.

    Thank you for your reaction to this WONDERFUL song, The Spirit of Radio. Your reaction was very similar to my own, the very first time I experienced it as a youth. At the end, I didn't expect the great tribute to their wonderful drummer, Neil Peart! Brought a few tears to my eyes. But then I imagined, what a GREAT band it must be up in Heaven with all the wonderful musicians we've lost over the years. Many many Rush fans knew this, but it wasn't really common knowledge. Neil Peart wrote the lyrics to most of the Rush songs. RIP Neil.

    The Spirit of Radio is also the realities that the record company puts on an artist to make a HIT SONG….Their like the hits the hits I don’t hear any hits make hit songs or radio won’t play you! The talent’s manager feels that pressure too that he or she are sandwiched in between the Artist and the record company to make hits and keep them coming!

    For Rush, it's always *much* deeper that the first listening. Consider that the opening riff sounds like you're skipping along the radio dial trying to find something you want to hear....all the while, you're stopping to hear glimpses of every genre the dial has to offer...punk, new wave, rock, reggae, metal, etc. There's even a tip of their hat to Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence!

  • @traceysharpe6330
    @traceysharpe6330 Před rokem

    Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart explained this song in an interview with Billboard magazine: "'The Spirit Of Radio' was actually written as a tribute to all that was good about radio, celebrating my appreciation of magical moments I'd had since childhood, of hearing 'the right song at the right time.' However, [the song's] celebration of the ideals of radio necessarily seemed like an attack on the reality - on the formulaic, mercenary programming of most radio stations, with music the last of anyone's concerns. And yes, it was really ironic that such a song became popular on radio, though it was a kind of litmus test. Some radio guys who 'got it' could hear the song and think, 'That's the way it ought to be,' while others - the shallow, swaggering salesmen-of-the-air - could be oblivious to the song's meaning and proudly applaud themselves, 'That's about me!

    I've really grown to love Rush over the years. I didn't really care for them as a teen in the 90's(too busy listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam) but as I got older I really started to appreciate their music. I really love bass, I am, in fact, not the worst bass player of all time, but I'm pretty close. This lead me to really appreciate Geddy Lee. The man is absolutely brilliant, although playing anything by Rush on bass makes my fingers want to fall off. He's also one of the few bass players who's the lead vocalist as well. Anyway, they're a great band and I'm sure you'll find loads of their songs that you like.

    LOL this video gets everybody doing the duck hand because Geddy's doing it in the animation. And everybody gets the "stink face" because it's so good, like yourself. Or drum to it like myself. Wow are young people like yourself using the word "groovy" now? That's far out, man. You can do just about anything by them but the song Tom Sawyer, and 2112 which is a whole album side of about 20 minutes, but tells a story. And it's a masterpiece. Rush was a truly great band, and all very nice men, who never took themselves too seriously. They also never had any real fights or dramatics. Neil now is my absolute fav. drummer, and went through too much in life before losing his own life. What an intellect and exceptional man .

    Pretty impressive sound for three guys eh? Take the time to listen to the title track from 2112. It was Rush's fourth album. It was do or die for them as they stuck their collective middle finger in the music industry's face.
    You know, from this song, "One likes to believe in the freedom of music but glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah". They opened every show I ever saw with, "The Spirit of Radio", not "Spirit of the Radio"! Aaaaargh! That's all over You Tube! Anyway, Rush has balls. Enjoy your plunge down the rabbit hole.
