This is a very good anime. The characters shine and you'll end up loving them all, plus the skating animation is consistently beautiful. Viktor is...extra, in everything he does, while Yuri is endearing and the other Yuri is a tsundere spitfire. Fun times ahead for you! (And us, if you keep posting the reactions.)
I fall in love with the theme song first 😂 (in particular, the opening sequence).

I just realized I actually had never really watched the series fully (but I saw A LOT of clips and kinda managed to get the overall story 😂).
Those skating animations were amazing (i've read somewhere that they recorded the sounds of real sequences with the exact choreos and everything so that the animation and the soundtrack are accurate). Such level of details! This anime is really top notch quality. I look forward to watch this together with you 😍

Yuuri walked away from Viktor's offer of a photo because it was as though Viktor hadn't even recognised him as a fellow competitor and just thought he was another fan.
Has to be humiliating to have your idol not notice you even when you were one of the only other 5 people in the Grand Prix final with him.
Untrue.
It is normal for figure skaters to make photos with each other at competitions (and upload them) It is a flashy sport by necessarity.
Yuri walked away because what should have been the best day in his career was the worst. Before the competition he found out his dog dead. He placed dead last: He didn't manage to do a good score to show he finally is as good as Victor or even near that (the first being actually his dream).
He did not want to stand as a looser next to his Idol Victor but as an equal.
Victor on the other hand saw a competitioner who managed to go to the GPF (I'd say at least the top 10 figure skaters in the world) he did not have many meetings with. (In all likelyhood they have met at shows, possibly the GP and Worlds... just not the same training breaket as Victor would be in the top/last one and Yuri hadn't qualified for it, yet. So he wasn't his equal and therefore did try to stay away.
That is Yuri's pride speaking nothing more. That and he is an unrelible narrator. Which makes the story fun in the first place.
There are very few skaters in these breaket and they all meet at those competitions again and again. They are all vagualy aquainted with each other. It is just a question of personality/rivaly if they are friends/talk to each other. A lot of them are surprisingly friends with each other.
Perhaps because their own score has nothing to do with what the others earn. There are very many pictures of skaters posing with each other + younger & retired skaters. It's a small family.
@@ruthfischer7615 I think it's safe to say that we're each guessing when it comes to Viktor's actual thoughts in that moment, so Yuuri is our only window into the scene.
I do agree that Yuuri is an unreliable narrator and that he would love to stand next to Viktor as an equal, but it's pretty clear that he's not in a great headspace at that moment. So even if Viktor is thinking nothing of the sort, in Yuuri's eyes the interaction between them when he is offered a photo seems more akin to a celebrity accommodating a fan rather than an elite athlete acknowledging a peer.
@@gavanhill5132 And whose interpretation is that? Someone who knows nothing about how figure skating at the top senioor level works? Someone who mistook it for simlar of an actor or musician meeting fans?
I have watched figure skating for years... watched Yuzuru Hanyu and the others goof of with the each other at training for the show and taking selfies. Like Phichit does in the show. Or all the others in the photos we see at the end.
So many skaters and so many photos. Fans love that. The fun they have and that you can clearly see. Only another competitive figure skater knows how it is living a life like that:
Training and school, maybe university and not much else if you skate in the top circles. There are jokes about it. Like about that Russian pair skater couple that went with Lambiel on holidays to ski.
It is a pretty closed community. A skater as good as Yuri? would have been at many of the events Victor was. Victor would have noticed him even when he wasn't interested in getting to know that introverted skater. Victor is not that blind. He probably tried to reach out to welcome a younger, more insecure skater. In all likelyhood he already took photos with all the other figure skaters at the event; even retired ones that were there.
At the competition they trained on the same ice for multiple days. Victor - like all other skaters - watches the other skaters compete. Everyone does. It is part of how figure skating functions.
I am just at the beginning of the video but I can tell you right now that I can't wait to see your reaction to this! It's one of my favourite animes of all time because since I was a little girl in the 90s, my mom and I would (and still) bond over figure skating (which is one of my favourites sports). And of course we bonded watching this when it came out in 2016 (and she isn't really into anime or animation in general).
This anime was an absolute success, even famous figure skaters love it (which is rare for professionals to like a sports anime of their sport) and some even cosplayed. Also, I think I speak for everyone who loves this show: we love watching reactions to it! We are still waiting for the prequel movie to come out! It was announced a few years ago that a movie would be coming...but so far we've only gotten a poster, a teaser trailer and an official trailer...we're still waiting! So, in the meantime, we watch reactions XD I actually found one of my favourite reactors through her reaction to the teaser and she is now re-watching the whole season!

I love how much of the first episode has funnier meanings when you realize what happened the night before :> It makes everthing so much funnier. He's so deperssed not remembering, but everyone else is reacting to that not what he thinks they are.
Yuri threw himself on victor to be his coach, then was cold to him later making victor confused, but sees yuri reinact his routine making him decide to go see him :> And the other Yuri was not upset with how badly he skated, but how he acted the night before :> Making so many things a completly different story :>
