Remember in the beginning the broom Kiki made was too small and unreliable. She had to depend on her mom's broom for a while. But eventually, as she matured, she would need to choose another broom of her own, which she did. And she had to struggle to master it so she could save Tombo. Kiki's relationship with the brooms is a metaphor for Kiki trying to find her own inner voice and set of beliefs as she grows up.

Even Dora said she could making a new broom when she'll be good in her new town.
I think this movie is a good way to show how hard an artist has to work for being successful.

No matter how many times I look at it, it's a masterpiece.
When the old man of the deck brush is talking about "That's the deck brush I lent you," Hayao Miyazaki appears in the scene. 😊
    l love this movie ❤

When and where the story in Kiki's Delivery Service is happening is a fun thing to track down.
Almost certainly Europe (with only some of Central Europe or southern Scandinavia likely).
Cars are from the 1930s to the 1940s (did not change much externally in that period), train could be that time as well, the small Japanese radio and the songs it plays are mid-1960s, some of the buildings are Italy during the fascist years, architecture is North European or Alpine such as Germany or Austria, and Kiki's journey crosses that of the Imperial Airways flights south from London (the Handley-Page HP.42 airliner), and appears to pass by Paris (the other witch's city with the windmill visible).
That airship is definitely World War One period and just after, as those of the 1930s were almost all larger and of elliptical shape.
Kiki's arrival town is on a Western coast that is oriented North-South, which narrows it down to Portugal, part of Spain, France's Atlantic coast, the West of Italy, somewhere near Albania on the Tyrrenian Sea, or perhaps in Scandinavia such as Sweden (though the weather, even assuming the film happens over a single spring and summer) is very clement.
I assume Kiki flies from Scandinavia, Denmark, Netherlands or Belgium, south past Paris, takes the train West across France (it is usually going right to left on screen), and arrives in the Charente-Maritime or similar part of France on the Atlantic coast.

Jiji is voiced by the late Phil Hartman who sadly was murdered by his mentally unstable wife, who commited suicide almost instantly (out of regret presumbely). He died before the movie was released and it was dedicated to his memory.
His other credits are Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure on The Simpsons and The Air Conditioner and The Hanging Lamp in The Brave Little Toaster plus appeared in Little Soilders and SNL.

Almost all movies from Studio Ghibli the main character is a Woman, in all movies the women is very important, at least in movies like the wind rises or Porco Rosso "my favorites" the history is about a Woman or powered woman doing great things, And kiki for me is one of the best and spiring movies for a independent woman

    • @stevetheduck1425
      @stevetheduck1425 Před rokem +4

'The Wind Rises' main character is the man who designed aircraft for Mitsubishi, though his designing of the famous WWII Zero fighter and his help in designing the bombers Japan used on China in the late 1930s are played down.
Yes, there is a very significant woman in that film; he marries her.
'Porco Rosso' main character is a male WWI veteran, and several other such men who cannot re-connect with society, but the film also contains a significant couple of women, one an ex-revolutionary (judging by her choice of French songs), the other the daughter of an aircraft designer who, it is implied, designs her own planes by herself in later years (the redhead flying the jet flying-boat at the end), as well as the many older women who actually make the planes the men fly.

Hayao Miyazaki and his team visited many places in Europe including Stockholm and Visby in Sweden (he went to Sweden in the late 60's to get permisson from Astrid Lindgren to make an anime adaption of Pippi Longstocking but she declined, so instead he made Panda! Go, Panda! which took some inspiration from Pippi Longstocking), in addition to Amsterdam, Paris and San Francisco.

Osono is voiced by Tress MacNeille who is very prominent within voice acting in animation, especially as the current voice of Daisy Duck and Chip (of Chip n Dale) every since the 90's, Babs Bunny in Tiny Toon Adventures, Dot in Animaniacs (both versions), Gadget Hackwrench in Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Charlotte Pickles in Rugrats, a surly box office attendent in 2 Stupid Dogs episode The Snack Bar, a phone voice in Wile E Coyote and Road Runner short The Whizzard of Ow and even in LucasArts adventure game Full Throttle (and its Remaster) as Suzi, the leader of the Vultures.

I remember watching this at 13 and vibing with it very hard, watching it again at 18 and not understanding what Kiki's problem was, and then recently rewatched it as someone who works with young people and realized that most of the issues she has throughout the film can be summed up with, "Oh, right, she's thirteen and being thirteen is just Like That." Glad i can appreciate this film again as an adult with that in mind.

From what I understand, in some versions, Jiji is able to speak to Kiki again but in others, he's not. I believe in the Original Japanese, he's not able to, as it signifies that Kiki has grown up.

It was in an earlier dub Jiji was able to speak again but in the newer release, they cut away all the lines that Phil Hartman adlibbed to make it more to the japanese original. In the swedish dub which used the english dub's lines, though it followed with the original version including Jiji still can't speak human to Kiki.

I honestly think that the 1998 Disney version was funnier, but less faithful to the Japanese version, than this one. It is getting harder and harder to find the original Disney version because of the re-release. Jiji has more sarcastic and funny lines, and the songs are by an American singer. One should look at both releases to get an appreciation for the movie. I grew up with the 1998 version, so that's what I'm going with.
