  • This acclaimed animated tale by director Hayao Miyazaki follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.

God watching your reacting gave me flashbacks to watching this with my mom. She used to cry so hard watching this movie, it was only when I was older I learned that when she was little she was stuck looking after her little sister while her mom was deathly ill. This movie is so much more intense when you get older and have all the emotional baggage for the the stakes to feel deadly serious.

I know I'm late to this party but I wanted to chime in. This is a *very* Japanese movie. The belief in spirits and ghosts is so baked into Japanese culture that everyone either believes in these things or just accepts them the way westerners accept Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy as cultural touchstones. Children being independent and self-sufficient is a big thing as well, so it's not so unusual that all the adults in this film let the kids run around by themselves. And this kind of quiet, melancholy, nothing really happens storytelling is very Japanese as well.

  • @SallieAndrea
    @SallieAndrea Před 10 měsíci +37

It so funny to see the cultural difference of mei being outside alone for long hours, cause in certain cultures such as Japan it’s very common for young kids to play around by themselves or with friends

    • @ravenzyblack
      @ravenzyblack Před 3 měsíci +2

It was like that in the US too. When I was growing up we would spend hours and hours outside, and we’d only come home when it started getting dark. In the summertime my mom would kick us out of the house after breakfast and we even eat lunch out on the patio and then we would disappear into the neighborhood. If you wanted to find out where the kids were, you would just look for where the all the bikes were piled up or call around. Everyone knew eachother’s phone numbers.

The dad is reflecting the native beliefs of Japan, Shintoism. Which is a nature based belief system. It is important to honor & respect the nature spirits that give life to the land and thereby people.. keeping everything in balance. So that is why he discusses Totoro with the girls the way he does. And why he doesn't dismiss or discourage them. Many Japanese honor the spirits at temples or shrines (like the one you saw Satsuki & Mei waiting in the rain in) so it is just a natural part of life in that culture. My grandmother had a small shrine in her house that she would leave offerings like oranges or incense at often, with a picture of my grandfather, to honor our ancestors and the nature "kami."
Miyazaki also took inspiration from his own life for this film, as his mother was hospitalized for several years when he was a child.
Great reaction, I had a smile on my face & many laughs :) this movie will always be connected to my childhood and heritage. And I'm so glad when new people discover what a gem it is. 🍃🦝🌱🕷🌿

It's actually kind of wonderful that you guys were so over-worried, because I remember watching this as a child (maybe around 4yo?) and being scared and worried at the same times. There's this childhood dread of the dark and the unknown that he really captures in this movie with the early soot sprites scene, and the danger Mei is in and Sasuki's terror that she's hurt towards the end. It all turns out well, but of course you were swept up in the worry, you're supposed to be!

It's a gem for sure, but I feel like it's also become a bit overglorified because of people thirsting over Howl's looks and his voice, as well as the soundtrack being used in every other yt/insta/tiktok reel. It still tells a captivating story and the artistry is phenomenal as always, but as of late, I feel like a lot of the film's appreciation is stemming from these shallow places more so than because of its actual story and artistry, otherwise I'd imagine other emotionally-captivating and beautifully-crafted Ghibli films would also be on parr with HMC's popularity, but that doesn't seem to be the case. At least not on the internet.

    I use a translation site.
If you have only seen Totoro in English audio, I urge you to see it in its original audio. There are a number of parts that are so different that you may think it is a different movie.
The whispered lines in the original audio have been changed to exaggerated shouts in the English audio, and loud laughter has been added to the dialogue when it was silent in the original. ......
    29:12
Furthermore, the line "I shouldn't have shushed my sister" is not in the original.
I think this part is completely subjective to the translator. Why did Ghibli allow such dubbing and translation?
I was also shocked to see that the scene where the two argue was also a line in the original where the viewer could understand the limitations of Satsuki who is still in elementary school and trying her best to be a mother figure, but in the English dubbed version, she just became a mean older sister who scolds her younger sister.
Please listen to and watch the original audio. I understand that the dubbing and translation were done based on the decision that this would be more supportive in the U.S., but I would like you to know the difference between the original and the English version.

Great reaction! It never gets old watching older people experience Japanese Anime for the first time. This is the right rabbit hole to jump into! We all need Miyazakis movies in our lives. Disney is left in the dust behind Studio Ghibli in my opinion. Miyazaki is THE Master of animated movies and storytelling. If I may suggest two things; watch the Miyazaki movies in chronological order, not because they have anything in common but you can see how Miyazakis style evolve throughout his movies, and you will recognize details later that you know you've seen before like the soot spirits. 😉 The second suggestion is that you watch the movies with Japanese sound as they were ment to be. They have the perfect actors chosen for each role and dubbing actors will sometimes not be up to par with those actors. I know that you perhaps miss some stuff having to read the subtitles but it is well worth it in my opinion. I never watch dubbed Anime anymore. The ONLY one with good dubbing was Princess Mononoke because there you have some solid Hollywood actors doing the job.
How about checking out "Castle in the sky" next? 😃👍
I'm looking forward to more anime reactions on this channel! Keep up the good work!

These movies are just so chill.

This one is the biggest of the Vibes of Ghibli, other movies produced by the studio such as Princess Monoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Grave of the Fireflies have much more of a message behind them, and then there are the straight up adventures like Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, or Howl's Moving Castle.
Basically any of the Ghibli movies you pick you're probably gonna have a good time watching it, except probably Grave of the Fireflies.
Note: I've heard that in Japan there were some beliefs that babies and young children were thought of to be more closely related to the spirit world and that as you become older you become more human. That could be why that the children are the ones who see the spirits in the movie, children and especially young ones are "part spirit".

At Expo 2005 park in Aichi, Japan (from the 2005 expo) you can go to Mei's house, they actually have it there! You can tour inside, backyard, and it is exactly as it is! Bucket with a hole at the pump! Then you can go to a lookout and look down from Totoro's view of the house! They have upgraded to even more Ghibli places at the park, not just Totoro.
There are 3 sizes of Totoro, biggest is the "king".
Kids in Japan are very independent, they walk (or used to, especially in the countryside) to school by themselves.

So Totoro was originally released as a dual feature with Grave of the Fireflies.
You have your heart filled with Totoro, you want hardcore Hector, Grave will rip your heart out.
DO NOT WATCH IT IF YOUVE HAD A BAD DAY
Im not kidding, this is not hype.
Grave is brilliant but its hard.
Oh, subs boys, watch the subs.

Y’all’s reaction pretty much mirrored mine. I didn’t see this movie until 2016ish. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, cuz I just *knew* Mei or the mom was gonna die, lol.
It just goes to show the differences in cultural storytelling and how engrained they are within us. Old folktales and legends from Europe have strongly shaped the way we tell stories in the western hemisphere. There has to be some sort of trauma or evil to overcome. So, you can imagine my shock when everything ended hunky dory with zero deaths, lol.
I look forward to seeing your future Ghibli adventures.

Watching you guys on the verge of freaking out, was absolutely hilarious. Fun fact, this movie was a double feature with Grave of the Fireflies. Agustin is right about Grave of the Fireflies, it’s a movie that is pretty much one time only and maybe to be worked up a bit to. Totoro is one of the most wholesome, adorable, feels like a warm hug movies. Can’t wait to watch more.

Totoro is actually one of the Studio Ghibli films I actually don’t have a real attachment to, but I loooooove the Catbus and as sooon as the “Totoro, totoro” music starts playing I start BAWLING! Can’t wait for the reactions to Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Ponyo, and Whispers of the Heart, these are my all time favorite Ghibli films, Spirited Away being my number one. Spirited Away will always be my favorite film, I saw it when it released in the movie theater in 2003, I was 6 years old when I watched it with my newly made best friend, who I’m still best friends with now. This year actually theaters here in Peru showed almost all Ghibli films, one of them being Spirited Away and my best friend and I went together to watch it, we ended up crying bcs this movie means a lot to both of us. She even played 1st violin in the Animatissimo: Ghibli Edition concert this year here in Peru, and I cried!!
    Anyway, this was super fun!

I've watched this movie many times and it took me till like, last year to realize it represents my story. I grew up with a sick mom, always at the hospital. We're talking 15years of sickness and hospitals, surgeries and what not, before she got better. I have a younger brother and we lived with our dad. After I realised that, this movie just hits differently for me. I actually watched this movie with my mom

Such a masterpiece. If you see it this way, the father is remaining positive for the girls knowing the mother is in the hospital. And also knowing that he never disparages the kids when they say they saw Totoro. It's reassuring the kids. It's great!

Guys, thank you all so so much for watching and reacting to this movie. It does my heart good to see people enjoying one of my all-time favourite anime films for the first time, and learning to appreciate the talent and imagination of Hayao Miyazaki. I remember well the first time I watched "My Neighbor Totoro", at the first public screening that I ever attended at my university's anime fan club. After limited exposure to the medium on Canadian TV, it amazed and filled me with wonder to see how beautiful and engrossing Japanese animation could be. This movie has had me hooked ever since.
I'll admit that I found it amusing and strange that you'd be expecting horrors and tragedy around every corner in this endearing film. However, considering that we're all relatively fresh off of "Secret Invasion" and "GotG Vol. 3", I suppose I can understand it.
I can appreciate your (Augustin's?) statement that you feel as though you've visited Japan just by watching this story. It's one of my favourite aspects of the film. The story tends to move slowly in places, but those spots offer some of the most valuable glimpses into everyday Japanese life in the 1950's & 60's. In fact, many rural areas of the country are similar to Mei and Satsuki's village even today, as can be seen in films set in more modern times, like "Summer Wars" and "When Marnie Was Here".
And I'm not surprised that viewing this movie has given Augustin a greater insight into other Ghibli films that he's seen. There are various themes that Miyazaki often liked to explore and depict in movies that he directed. A very common theme was the relationship between humans and the natural/spiritual world. "My Neighbor Totoro" presents the lighter, more whimsical side of that relationship; its message is that people and nature can learn to live together. Although the world of nature (and nature spirits) can be strange and difficult for us to understand, if we pay it the proper respect, we'll find the denizens of nature to be good neighbours to us.
There's so much more than I could say, based on your commentary during the movie, but I'll leave it there for now. In addition to movies from the Ghibli library, I highly recommend recent anime films like "A Silent Voice" and "Your Name". Please consider them for your viewing/reacting pleasure.
