A part of the shift does come from Maruyama Masao left MAPPA in 2016. During his tenure as one of the main producers at Madhouse, he was known for giving opportunities to a LOT of creators if he believed that their talents were worth cultivating. It could be argued that this stance was the reason for Madhouse's push into both critical and popular success for the 80s to the mid-2000s.

It’s just capitalism. The guy who made MAPPA from what I’ve heard had escaped from an older studio that wasn’t allowing him to make “shows for the arts”. That kind of content brings an audience, which brings more money grubbers who tear down what made the new studio successful. They don’t know or care how or why the big bucks came in to begin with. They strangle and discards the ppl who make what ppl like. Then the executives escape with hefty paychecks they made from exploiting ppl, leaving a smoking crater behind. From the remnants, ppl strive to create new content elsewhere. And the cycle begins anew.
      This is basically every company.

@@znotetakureviews9138I totally agree that this is where things went wrong. Coming from Madhouse he had all of the right connections, and he seemed to have a mindset where he placed considerable trust and respect in the creatives behind the shows. It's sad to have watched Mappa go down this path, especially when I look at Trigger who seems to have managed to stick to their guns creatively over the years 😢

Mappa is eating themselves alive. I have no idea what other outcome they expected when they started collecting IPs like Infinity stones, and treating their employees like dirt, even higher-up ones like directors. Creating art, especially hand-drawn animation, isn't a process you can treat like it's a factory were the workers are interchangeable, without repercussions.

No kidding. MAPPA has over the past two years very quickly ascended my list of most-reprehensible anime studios, and now everything from them moving forward is going to be tough to watch without seriously wondering what is going on behind the scenes.
I remember back in December 2022, a Tweet came to light that MAPPA needed to hire some outsourced help to finish the in-betweens for "Chainsaw Man." Between that and the grumblings about "Attack on Titan's" final season as reported by Anime News Network, MAPPA has been putting a giant target on its back.

@@natalimoinaIn the case of "Chainsaw Man," the Tweet I spoke about came to light 5 days before the final episode was supposed to air with picture evidence to back up the claim, and apparently asked for 3000 frames of in-betweening / cleanup. If we assume about 23 minutes per average anime episode, that totals about ~29,000 frames per episode, which means that in the days leading up to the finale, nearly 10% of the episode wasn't done yet.
The problem is not outsourcing as a concept - the problem is that MAPPA is consistently putting everyone in-house through the grinder, and we can also therefore assume that the people MAPPA is outsourcing to are ALSO put into the grinder.

Yeah, sad as it is, the writing was on the wall for "Ice Adolescence," but it doesn't make it hurt any less depending on who you are. Even as someone who did not like the original series, I wanted to see this movie and see what it could narratively offer. A shame that it looks like that will never be.
A property changing studios is not unheard of ("Full Metal Panic!" went from Gonzo to Kyoto Animation, and then to Xebec, and "To Your Eternity" moved from Brain's Base to Drive between seasons 1 and 2), but it's generally true that properties tend to stay within the same studio. But here's an interesting wrench in the gear: no studio--to my knowledge, anyway--has been announced for the new season of "Dorohedoro," which was a MAPPA adaptation. Now, a movie production is different from a TV seasonal, but it is worth pointing out that MAPPA doesn't seem to be in control of the new season for that.
What does that mean for "Ice Adolescence?" Well, nothing really since that's an entirely different property. Still though, only time will tell if another studio decides to take it on.

Yuri on Ives blueray first week sales are still to this day the highest sales the company has ever made. Jjk and chainsaw man aren't even close in comparison despite being more recent series and supposedly having a bigger fanbase with wider appeal. If mappa was worried about money they wouldn't be canceling the YOI movie, they'd be milking the fans for every cent. I think the uproar over it's cancellation goes to show just how active and large the fanbase still is after seven odd years of NOTHING. Most studios would kill to have such a huge fanbase so heavily invested in an IP but Mappa has done literally nothing with YOI outside the anime and OVA. Money isn't the concern.

Thank you for your kind words.
The truth is, in part because of the anime industry being very much behind closed doors, any opportunity to help boost the general awareness or education of how this medium works as a business is worth doing. "Yuri!!! on ICE" has the benefit of a large devoted fanbase collectively mourning / reconciling, so it's being given more of a public face than it might have for some other, more unknown property.
When I talked about "The Age of Delays" in my video of the same title, I tried articulating how the modern anime producing climate is just not conducive to creating or promoting work because there are too many embedded issues that make a simple solution impossible. The sad reality is that, unless SOME kind of fix is found, then no property is safe, no matter how devoted the fanbase or dedicated the creative team :(

For a studio like Mappa I don't really think they'd cut a movie like this because it wouldn't be profitable or being short handed on staff, but then again I also can't prove malice.
Mappa's art is like paintings made with blood, they can be pretty, but you need to accept the rather negative way there were created. I just wish we lived in a world where a cancellation like this wasn't the death nail for a series, rather allowing some other more intrested group to pick it up. Alas, copyright laws and such.
In the end I'm not super informed on the situation and I'm not very attached to the series as my only connection is that my Sister has watched it, but I see how others are sad, and I feel bad for them. Art getting cancelled like this sucks.

    • @znotetakureviews9138
      @znotetakureviews9138  Před měsícem +41

Indeed. It was honestly Ohtsuka's 2023 statement in KOMPASS about the original anime not making MAPPA much of a profit that kind of served as the missing piece, at least as I framed it here. Since it was from the president of the company, that does give it more credence of being "the truth" rather than some random Twitter account saying that "X made no money."
Given MAPPA's recent actions, it's becoming increasingly tougher to not view most things that the studio makes or does through a highly cynical lens. The "Jujutsu Kaisen" fiasco was, along with "Wonder Egg Priority," one of those metaphorical open-the-door moments that made people in the anime community who were not privy to these kinds of issues take note of them. As such, "Yuri!!! on ICE" getting iced reads as especially bad since the text of the show was about the liberation of self-expression through ice-skating and romance. There is, perhaps, a sad reading in that money-concerned MAPPA would crush such an emotional story for so many.

Without saying anything for sure, I think that "PMMM" is safe. The series's original chief director is serving as the movie's director, and Shinbou is slated to be chief director for the new movie. Especially since "PMMM" is arguably even more high-profile than "Yuri!!! on ICE" comparatively, the announcement of a new movie so long after "Rebellion" seems more secure on the surface.
However, Shaft is also not without its own recent problems with productions, as "RWBY: Ice Queendom" and "League of Nations Air Force Aviation Magic Band Luminous Witches" were both struck with serious hiccups in the pipeline. Here's hoping that it goes alright.

As I was working on three different video scripts (one of which is, coincidentally, about a yuri manga), I got a DM from someone asking "Why is everyone getting so upset over this movie?"
I hope that this provides at least some kind of clarity.
There are other aspects I did not touch on (such as there being another example of a female director in anime not being able to get / realize work), but that's an entirely new kind of discussion that far exceeds "Yuri!!! on ICE." Therefore, I do not address it here. My apologies if that was something that you wanted perspective on.

I don't see a lot of people talk about this, but what probably played a big role in getting the movie cancelled is that Russia is officially banned from the Olympics. Russian skaters have to perform under the neutral flag, and they can't use Russian anthem. Considering the Ice Adolescence was supposed to be about a Russian figure skater, this makes sense.

While I understand the thought, I'm not sure if it quite applies to that much of an extent. Especially since it's supposed to be a story from the past (and anime has had stories taking place in the past with Soviet-era influences, like "Schwartzmarken" in East Germany during the Cold War or "Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut" during the Space Race), I don't think "Ice Adolescence" would have transgressed anything on that front.

Yuri on Ice is an anime from 2016, you probably aren’t part of the figure skating community but Russia already had their ban for the 2018 Olympics because of what happened in 2014 in Socchi. When the anime was released Russia already couldn’t compete with their flags, what happened is that with the war in 2022 they got banned at all from official competitions and can’t even compete under “”committe of athletes from Russia”” or something.

There is no way Yuri on Ice did not net Mappa enough revenue to produce Ice Ado, that is a bold faced lie they want to use to push criticism away from the company and onto the show itself and fans. And considering the shows that Mappa produced and snatched up after Yuri on Ice and the quality of said shows, I 100% believe they used the money from Yuri on Ice promotions, events and merch (because there was plenty) to fund these other series. It’s also way more believable that Directors were running into issues getting more lgbtq+ leaning aspects of Ice Ado approved and constantly having to rewrite the script and at some point they probably did run into money issues because they allocated it all on other projects.

Theres something so human in Yuri On Ice. you can feel the creator is a person with their own interests and they want to share their passion with us. ultimately, it got me into bl (and gl) as a whole. theres something pure in romance bl (not the rapey weird ones) and it shows relationships in a state where both parties are completely equal, unlike straight romance. We know that Mappa got a raw deal from their initial contract with the production committee for YOI. However, it was a learning experience for them, and it's a shame Mappa chose to give up on a proven moneymaker in favor of pursuing projects that don't cater to YOI's audience at all. At this point, they're a big enough studio that they should have the bargaining power to renegotiate a contract that nets them more profit. In the meantime, they've effectively abandoned the female audience they initially engaged with YOI. Mind you, Kids on the Slope is a josei adaptation, and they later went on to adapt Banana Fish before going full tilt into picking up popular shonen licenses. It feels like they used female anime fans to gain success and then abandoned them. Not to mention the female creators behind YOI whose work is surely trapped in a licensing agreement they can't get out of. It wouldn't be unprecedented to pursue a second season at a different studio, one that actually sees the potential YOI clearly has artistically AND financially. If Mappa feels scorned by the poor experience they had with YOI then why not let the license go? If they're not making money off it, why hold on to it? It's disrespectful to the creators and their vision, it's disrespectful to the fans, and it's disrespectful to the medium of anime. The profit potential of YOI is not in question, but somehow still, a series with a large female audience gets shafted for petty reasons that are antithetical to art making AND profit!

Plus if it's going to have the quality of the original animation and a similarly amazing sound track, the artists and sound technicians would have to be some of the more experienced ones. Add in paying for the motion cap for the skating plus professional skaters and choreographers... well, they'd have to either hire those or buy rights to use existing performances and neither would be cheap considering YOI's success, everyone would want a piece of the pie. I really wanted this to be made but I do see how it would be very expensive to make.

It is a love story that treats two males that love each other with respect showing it as something that is good. Neither one of them is abused, or in any way a victim. Both are adults. Their relationship is between them, and they don't just go out and tell everyone, but they also don't try to hide it either. They wear their matching rings when with other people. Neither is ashamed of being who they are. This is rare, especially in an animation.

I may be jaded, but I’m pretty convinced the queer element played a big part in the cancellation. The reason fans were as ravenous as they were isn’t coincidental, it’s because YoI came out of nowhere to give starved audiences a healthy, emotionally mature romantic mlm relationship just sitting there, out in the open. YoI made the queerbaiting question seem like just semantics because even if they didn’t explicitly show them kissing or say out loud that they were dating, it did literally everything else in its wheelhouse to make it as obvious as possible that they were in love. But it meant that the studio then had to put its money where its mouth is, cause to test the waters sure, it might make sense in japan’s political climate to be careful the first time around. But continuing the franchise meant having to genuinely engage with queerness as a topic, or risk angering the fanbase who would not likely tolerate veiled allusions for very long, if at all.
Fans were rabid for more, but they were rabid probably for all the wrong reasons (representation matters yall) and I could bet untold worldly possessions that that was at the heart of development hell: a fight over how explicit to make the show’s central queer themes.

Of course it may not take place within the "present-day" Yuri and Victor relationship, but the increased attention on Victor's past may have put certain aspects of their dynamic into newer focus. Why does everyone keep comparing anything that gets canceled or not renewed for another season to No Game No Life? 😅😂 I've watched plenty of other popular things get dropped, like Noragami after 2 seasons (and on a cliffhanger).

Lol it honestly has to do with how much of a meme "No Game No Life" season two is within the anime community more than anything else. Especially given that "Noragami" got a continuation of SOME kind after season one rather than a prequel film like "No Game No Life" did, it doesn't tend to get remembered quite so much as "the show that ended early" compared to other adaptations.
I've seen plenty of things that never got their continuation / conclusion via adaptation, like "Land of the Lustrous," "His and Her Circumstances," or "Girls' Last Tour." But given the social landscape of the anime community as a whole, "NGNL" season two is admittedly an easy joke to make while also reminding people of the cold reality that it will likely never get a season two proper.

This might end Mappa, at least for western fans. Huge loss of faith in them.

I wouldn't go that far. Even amidst this news AND all the behind-the-scenes drudgery that has been happening, they still have the production rights for "Chainsaw Man" and "Jujutsu Kaisen." That alone will be enough to keep eyes on them, for better or worse.
