For The last part there where you said that you didn't know how such a messy episode turned into a kiss, let me explain. During Yuri's freeskate he changes the jump component that's right at the end of the program to a Quad Flip. Now why is that important? If you remember during the first episode when Viktor is skating the news casters point out Viktor's signature jump: the quad flip.
Now, Yuri's freeskate, Yuri On Ice, tells the story of his journey to get to where he is now, his life and love. So in other words, if he changes the last jump to something that is in relation to Viktor, during a skate that tells about his life, then Yuri's story ends with Viktor. And that is why Viktor kissed him.

One small and sort of understated but in my opinion, pure genius stroke of storytelling is the way that, from the very first scene of the show, from the first internal monologue, the show established, to the attentive viewer, how much of an unreliable narrator Yuri was. In the very first narration, Yuri introduces himself as a dime-a-dozen skater, all while we can see him taking part in a high profile international contest finale, while in the background, the front lage of the Japanese official figure skating website proudly shows him off as their top skater.
Yuri's perspective has always been clouded by his own very low sense of self worth, and it painted every interaction he had in the show, even, as you said, with the skaters who were also his fans.
What better reveal is there, then, other than the fact that this whole time, Yuri was missing the most important information regarding Viktor's view of him? His perspective has been unreliable from the start-that's why, when we're finally given that retroactive reveal, it makes sense! Of course Yuri didn't know what to make of Viktor. Of course Yuri's perspective was limited. He's been an unreliable narrator since the start, cluded by his own poor self-perception, and we've been with him the whole time, but it was still so easy to miss the fact that he was missing that information.
And so the reveal happens. And everything clicks into place.
And it makes sense. Because it's not out of left field. We've always known, to some extent, that we can't fully trust Yuri's limited perspective.

    • @imgayyyy2213
      @imgayyyy2213 Před 2 měsíci +12

Exactly! Also, if I remember correctly, his exact words were: "I'm a dime-a-dozen figure skater certified by the JSF." Which in and of itself is contradictory. You can't be certified by the JSF(Japan Skating Federation) unless you're really good. That line right there in his own introduction really tells us a lot about Yuuri as a character and a person. This line later changes to "I'm one of the top figure skaters certified by the JSF," around episode 2-4 in his little self intro, which is really soon after Victor comes to coach him.

    • @Nemamka
      @Nemamka Před měsícem +5

@@imgayyyy2213 !!! And then, and then!!! Later in the last episode I think? It changes BACK to "I'm a dime-a-dozen figurestkater" but this time he says it very calmly and quietly, as if with some... self irony? As a little inside-joke? Or even as a sign of how he's more self aware now, but still would rather _choose_ to stay humble about his achievements and just chill out with his friends / skate for love and for the joy of community and not as a life-and-death commitment...
I love him so much :D

This is so educational haha! But I’m still having trouble understanding the importance of the retroactive reveal. Like, yes. Yuri’s view is limited by his ability to not see himself the way everyone else does- but is the takeaway that when Yuri’s uninhibited he’s the life of the party and that makes him charming, and in addition to his skating that’s why Victor fell for him? Sorry, I think that part goes over my head..

That episode 10 plot twist is the most shocking and successful plot twist I've ever seen. I'm serious. From the start, us fans knew there was something more going on to Victor's motivation and his feelings towards Yuri. And we dug hard for clues. We scoured over every episode, picked apart detail after detail. And yet, despite the fact that in hindsight there was foreshadowing everywhere, that dedicated community was still blindsided by the reveal. The true foreshadowing was hidden in plain sight so well alongside so many other potential clues (some intentional and some not, I'm sure) that despite the fandom's rabid dedication to knowing everything about the show, like the exact brand of lip balm Victor used, to the price of his outfits, to hunting down the real life hotels and restaurants the characters visited) I never saw anyone guess the true twist. Absolutely legendary. I'll never forget how that felt.

    • @milkflavored

I don’t mean to offend, but if it’s the ( 🍻) twist, it wasn’t successful for me - it left me confused! Like, all this build up, and THATS what the set everything in motion? It kind of cheapened things for me.. I guess I need someone to explain why it’s so significant (unless you mean that the surprise comes from Viktor being the one who fell first?)

I'm in tears. This was the most put-together analysis I've ever heard. It's been 7 years but I think it JUST now clicked into place for me why YOI impacted me so hard, and it was because indeed it's also very clever narratively speaking. It's its logical stucture that drives home the emotional message - like a program's components-elements telling a story! In and of itself so meta, gosh I never even thought to seek these answers and yet! I now profoundly understand my OWN love for Yuri on Ice. I'm geniunely amazed. Thank you for this video, I guess I only just now found it because the algorithm picked it out for me after the cancelation news :')

i discovered this show in early 2018. it was my second ever anime, and i had been in love with figure skating since i was really young, so seeing an anime about it made me really happy. it was at a time where i was struggling with how i identified, and the LGBTQ+ representation was and still is really important for me. as much as there is fan service moments, their relationship does build and grow, and isn’t there just for the views, and it (like you said) goes into depth about how their love for each other started and how it wasn’t as simple as love at first sight, and how it was something special for both of them that sparked heavy interest towards each other. the way the show as a whole towards Y and V’s relationship is also very heartwarming, as when Pitchit screams out about V and Y’s rings and how they got ‘married’. seeing everyone accept it was very new to me, especially in media, and it was a very special moment for me. not to mention Yurio and his build in character, from the angry competitive character which tries to get Yuri to retire, to then trying his best to beat Yuri in the grand prix final just so Yuri stays in competition for longer and doesn’t retire. all the characters are so special, and mean so much to the story. yuri on ice, you are a one in a million show that i wish i could watch again for the first time

    I liked your essay.
But I don't think Victor "fell in love": he was depressed and Yuri made him feel something (a chrush) and changed things up. So he chased the emotion and really fell in love over it. Think about it: Victor loves surprises - funnily enough he plans them in contrast to Yuri - but at this point in his career the only surprise he could do would be to loose and what kind of surprise is that?
What is fascinating is that most people don't realize that Yuri is to a certain way still running when he plans to end his career with a gold medal at the Grand Prix. Why? Because in the end as a top skater you should maybe win it but you will not really be remembered for it. The highlight of the season lies in the second half: Worlds. Only - as you said - it does not help that well with the narrative structure because it does not built and "only" has 2 skates maybe 1 to 2 days apart. It is also interesting that narrative wise we seem to be in a pre-Olympic year meaning the next one is actually the very important one.
You certainly will be remembered for an Olympic medal, less so for world medals and even less for Grand Prix.
Funnily enough you would have to be in I'd say the top 10 or Top 8 skaters of the world to get there. Let me demonstrate why I think it is more than Top 6:
In the season of 2017/18 - I think - we had another Winter Olympic season. In the Grand Prix in his first competition Javier Fernandez surprisingly messed up and did not advance because of it. But he did win bronze at the Olympics and - I believe - he was the current World champion. Yuzuru Hanyu won his competitions but ultimely had a foot injury and could not go to the Grand Prix. The GP has 3 skater slots that can advance to the competition f someone can't compete. Hanyu ultimly won those Olympics as well: Anime style. That man ultimatly landed his first quad after healing I think 10 days before the Olympics and had to take pain medicine. Nathan Chen - who won the GP - was rather shaky in his program but Shoma Uno had trouble as suddenly he had a chance to win gold. At the Olympics Shoma earned silver. Chen did mess up his short at the Olympics by landing none of his 3 jumps correctly. Like JJ he had 5 quads in free and became 5th overall just a hairbreath behind Jin Boyang and the year later the ICU kind of debated if the Chiese jury member overscored him. Not that that would have mattered much.
There is also something else I'd like to talk about: coaches.
The idea the story developed from was about a figure skater and his coach. That they fell in love is to a certain degree incental but oh so great.
There are a lot of coaches actually in the show: Celestino, Yakoy, the coaches of the other skaters. They all play a role and are distinct characters, too. We see them interacting with their skaters and trying to built them which is not always easy and sometimes miscommunications happen. Seug Gil is not talking to his, Leo is pumped up and Chris is rather laid back to name some interactions. In this sport they are very important.
Victor breaking Yuri is possible seen in the lense how he has seen Yakov work but also because we all see the breakdown coming. The likelyhood that it could be prevented or wait till after the skate is at that point pretty mmuch zero. And skating with that anxiety? would have likely made Yuri fail. By breaking open the conflict when there is still time they both can confront it. Even as Victor has no idea how to deal with it really. But Yuri opens himself up and that is actually a necesarity: That is how communcation works. And when Victor asks what Yuri needs that is actually important. Instead of keeping to himself Yuri trusts enough to spill what he really thinks. It may not be the best way to deal but sometimes you need to hit rock bottom to break from destructive patterns. It actually helps here.
(And there is the amusing fan narrative that thinks Yuri went to the university in Detroit when in all likelyhood he did Online-University with an university in lets say Tokyo. No. He was in Detroit for Celestino only, not education.)
    Sorry for rambling... 💜

Yuri on ice is so well-written despite the amount of episodes which was only 12... IT DESERVES A MOVIE OR A SEASON 2, MAPPA WHEN???

Yuri on ice and Love Stage are two of my favourite anime. They are the ones that made me realize that BL/yaoi isn’t all just adult stuff. It can be super complex and amazing in its story telling

YOI is my favorite anime and this analysis is beautiful. ❤️
I'm still hopeful for the movie and a 2nd season to expand on the characters. For now I live in the realm of fanfic. 🥰

I came to YOI a coiuple years after it aired. I've always complained (quietly) that there was too much time diverted to side characters and their skating programs at the expense of Yuuri and Victor's storyline. But with your insights I see how each character is a reflection of Yuuri's growth as a character.
But I still think some of the sequences focusing on side characters' skating programs went on too long, carving a big chunk of those very short episodes that could have been used to fill the holes in Yuuri/Victor's and Yuuri/Victor/Yurio's thru-line. :)

Maybe this is controversial, but I feel like canceling the movie *may* have been the necessary thing to do. I think after so long of leaving such a dedicated fanbase waiting around, the expectations were just too high. YOI is the exception, in so many ways that it's hard to properly articulate - it's inspiring, it's fun, it's visually stunning, for starters. Us as a community hold YOI to such a high regard that maybe the team just didn't know how to properly follow it up with something just as fulfilling and powerful. It's obviously way more complicated than that, but a thought to chew on.

This was a really nice analysis on YoI, but I remain unsure abt how i feel towards this anime. Within these 12 episodes happened so much which made me struggle to keep up with the pace. It didn't feel horrible while watching, but in retrospect it is hard for me to relate as their relationship and character development (mainly for Yuri) came by so fast. Also, i just am not convinced yet that anyone besides Yuri rlly had a good character arc in this series, they totally missed out on everything we could have gotten through Yurio, as well more actual character traits to Viktor as he had many moments where you just couldn't comprehend him at all. While later on it made a bit more sense, he remained a complex character without ever being truly explained in actual ways you can understand. While that you touched upon, saying you feel like you understand him while actually getting "explained" why he is how he is, I still feel like the series had a lot of strong points it missed out on: the pace, the many characters (many of them mainly meant to portray one aspect of character development Yuri went through in one way or another which just gives us this extreme focus on him and his character arc, making the show miss out on more of its wide cast) and the relationship between Yuri and Viktor. I just couldn't buy it... the concept of love in itself is hard for me to understand, but it felt very random and just "love on first sight" with the drunk dance party - going over to many ups and downs in their time of coaching and being together. While the latter is totally normal, it still gave so many situations in which their issues just never got actually picked up again, resolving themselved by mere time and occurrence. Yuri and Viktor were meant to be relatable in one way or another as well as likeable, but i can't help but sigh while thinking about endless ways of how they could have been more. I truly do not hate YoI, but besides Yuri's character arc (and i guess the visuals and ice skating) idk for what other reason i could recommend this series to anyone...

I just finished watching YOI a couple of days ago and irrevocably fell in love with it. (I know I am beyond late to the fandom but at least it's better than never having arrived).
I loved the essay and I agree on a lot of points. Thank you for putting a lot of things into perspective.
I wished the anime had more episodes though, not just because I wanted to see more of their story but because the pace seemed rushed. I had to watch the show twice to better relate and make sense of things. I really wished the creators had more time on their hands and we could have better character study's of the other characters.
Nevertheless, within the time crunch the anime managed to make its mark. 🤍
