  • St. George's Day has always been a key date in the English calendar. Or at least it was. Over 30% of the population describes the celebration as "not important at all." We took to the streets to find out why. #streetinterview #stgeorgesday #england #englandhistory

    Look somethings die out doesn’t mean you’re anti English. I understand some feel like they’re losing their identity but it’s just a bit dated I’m afraid. I mean St George wasn’t even English and never stepped foot in England, then he killed a dragon. I know it’s not now celebrated specifically for those reasons but you can understand how it might not resonate with many especially the young. Like Christmas, Easter, coronations etc. If it was a bank holiday it would be celebrated more I’ll give you that but many would do so in the same way they do these other events- without true sincerety. Just looking at some of comments also gives a clue of what turns alot of people off.

    The interest is on the rise, make no mistake. If all cultures can celebrate their identity then so can the English. We have taken our nationality and culture for granted for too long but now as it is under attack and other cultures are being emboldened to impose their traditions, via multiculturalism, there is a change coming. Nationalism was never relevant when I grew up, but England is a very different place today and so I see the St. George’s flag in a whole new light and significance and that is all down to the radical left trying to remove such identity. The rise in sentiment in English identity is entirely down to the actions of the looney left fawning over foreign cultures and demonising everything English. It has had the opposite effect. Times are a changing

    • @davidmccann9811
      @davidmccann9811 Před 21 dnem

      Part of the reason for this is that racists often hide behind patriotism to justify their hatred. Look at the embarrassing people we get online calling themselves English or British Patriots. I doubt most of them know the first thing about English history or culture, and they probably have zero interest in either.

    Their plan is succeeding! It's alarming that so few people seem to care. Instead, they're engrossed in short TikTok videos, neglecting deeper engagement. It's baffling how, despite having access to vast amounts of information, we seem to be becoming less intelligent and literate. Perhaps that's the crux of the issue.

    The problem with England is that rapid demographic change has caused people to not care last census only 70% of people were English that number will go down every year as a foreigner living in England why would someone that isn’t English care about the history of England eg why would a Jamaican or an Indian care about the battle of Hastings or the Duke of Wellington people are tribal so when the native population becomes a minority which will be about 2040 why would anyone be surprised just for context in 1991 the native population of Britain was around 91% the demographic shift is remarkable in less than 30 years

    • @jonathanpaylor6006
      @jonathanpaylor6006 Před 20 dny

      True, England moves in and integrates those who choose to live here, who are also English or British as nationality has nothing to do with hereditary and never has.
      You mention the battle of Hastings etc well frankly wtf!!?? Small nations like Ireland celebrate massively their patron saint despite it being utterly ridiculous, not because they are prouder but they are more insecure, especially as they speak our language, play the sports we invented and have most of our culture.
      I'm very proud that we don't really celebrate St George's Day!!!

    • @jonathanpaylor6006
      @jonathanpaylor6006 Před 20 dny

      Everyone is descended from the same people! Nations are not genetic! And your argument about 'demographic' suggests all those who can't trace their ancestors to Elizabeth the first will have no loyalty and will be 'swamped' by those who just happen to live here .
      It is utter nonsense and slightly triumphant, yet it is also completely racist! The English/Irish/French/Algerian/Spanish...never were or have been a 'race' they are countries! Populated by the people who make their lives there and as such the 'native' population is completely irrelevant!

    There are too many negative connotations of the St George’s flag and being English. It has in recent history been hijacked as a symbol of the far-right the English Defence League, football, skinheads from the 80s and the lower classes. Further back in history England represented domination, colonialism and slavery.
    Unfortunately today patriotism for St George’s Day and England is tainted with racism and it doesn’t take long before the negative and often aggressive comments arise.
    So the general public in England don’t want to be associated with this ‘patriotism’ because of what it represents.
