Julia Hartley-Brewer: 'Snotty Attitude Of Many To St George's Cross'

  • Tom Slater and Julia Hartley-Brewer challenge the negative connotations associated with patriotism in the UK, arguing that these are rooted in misdirected snobbery and stereotypes.
Slater contends that middle-class, left-wing ideology views the country as inherently racist and xenophobic, while Hartley-Brewer highlights the pride that ethnic minority Brits have in the flag and notes that this patriotism is often overlooked in the broader national conversation.

I couldn't even buy a Flag around my area, Lewes, Brighton. I think they think we are far right and racists if we wave a flag. Asylum seekers are risking their lives to get here, we were a nation of carers and saviours to peoples in need. We now feel ashamed that we can't even look after ourselves. Do people feel ashamed of being English ??

White working class? Snotty? What utter tosh!! I am proud of my flag and I love my country. Why is it that we are not allowed to be patriotic? People who hate this country have the view that it's colonialism, or that it excludes others. That's missing the point completely. Am I proud of everything we have done in our history? No of course not. Show me a country that has never done anything bad or wrong in some way, all have. But I am proud of the good things we have done, and that's why I'm proud of my country and my flag. I am not proud of the way the country is being run but who we are as a people, not politicians, but the ordinary people and the good that people have done for this country and it's people, yes I am proud. So Happy St George's Day everyone!

It must be a generational thing- I’m the only person in my road flying the flag - and am proud of our country and history with all its faults and attributes- it makes me wonder about our large population- WHY WHEN EVERYONE HATES THIS COUNTRY aren’t they leaving ???????

I'm glad to say that you're wrong, Julie. It's not an awful lot of people who dislike the national flag of England.
It's only a very small minority probably only about 8% of the British people.
The problem is that we live in a minority rule clown world, and the minority has the way, and the means to shout the loudest to make themselves heard, making themselves seem like the majority, or the many.
The fact is the silent majority have been allowing them to get away with it for so long now that they actually believe that they are the majority and that most of the British people are on the same page as them.

If you were unfortunate enough to be on a Transatlantic slave ship in the 1800s shackled in chains below decks could you imagine the excitement when a Royal Navy Ensign Flag (featuring the Cross of St George) was spotted on a ship in the distance..... Yes, middle class lefties it was the Royal Navy who single handily STOPPED the slave trade.....
After the Atlantic trade was abolished they switched to the Indian Ocean and put an end to the very cruel slave trade where the Arabs would castrate all the Africans they captured.
We should be proud of what this flag represents! ......(not how the BBC/Guardian left wing alliance portray it)

Julia, I'm currently in France and you need to see the lengths they go to to celebrate St Georges Day here. It puts the UK to shame. Of course it may be our "National " flag but St George is also the Patron Saint of: Albania, Bulgaria, England, Ethiopia, Greece, Georgia, Portugal, Romania, Syria, Lebanon, Catalonia, Alcoi, Aragon and Rio de Janeiro. I'm absolutely thrilled that we all feel the brotherhood of St, George and welcome the unity of all those patrons from all those countroes with open arms. Hooray for some common sense at last.

It's been discussed in parliament on many occasions, usually in private members bills, the latest in 2016 by a Labour MP! I don't think any of them reached the voting stage.

We're experiencing the same issue in the US where our OWN flag is being mocked, and the Betsy Ross flag in particular seems to draw a lot of ire towards it (for some unknown reason) Be proud of who you are. I'm not even British, and I hate what Britain has become as of late.
