BMW E30 Sport Seat: Unlocking Back Seat Mechanism Broke Fix

In this video, I will briefly guide you through the process of removing your driver's seat and replacing your inner seat hinge as well as replacing the front seat unlocking rope. I initially saw the replacement of the rope as impossible, but then found that simply bending the soft metal rod was the only option. Therefore, the best method of replacing this rope is to bend the rod to remove it from its arm and to bend the new rod into place. Overall, it isn't difficult, but it can be a pain.
Also, the notorious L bracket failure of the sport seat meant that finding a replacement was quite the endeavor. Once I found a replacement I quickly phone a friend who could reinforce the seam of the L. After it was welded I was able to reinstall both hinges and put the seat back together.
Also, as a reminder: be sure to lube everything, especially the reclining seat gear. Once I installed the new (used and unbroken replacement) hinge, I could not get the seat to recline. This was merely the gear had become so dirty that it could not recline. Thus, a few shots of PB Blaster and the seat easily reclined. I believe it is necessary to keep these seats lubed to prevent failure.

Seat Hinges are NLA so Ebay or R3vlimited seems to be the best place. Remember, the driver's side inner hinger is the most difficult one to find. There are plenty of outer hinges (w/handle) so be patient.

Were your seat struts in good shape? My recline release cable seems to be fine but I ordered new struts to install. Thinking of just doing the cable now too while I have it all opened up

Thanks for watching. The struts were tolerable, but ultimately need replacing. I agree, since it’s open, refurbish what you can. Hope you’re project goes smoothly!!
