- BMW E36 recline gear repair diy. Electric seats are nice to have, but they do have a common set of issues that typically occur on higher mileage vehicles. Luckily, most of the repairs are quite simple to perform.
Replacing the recline gear involves removing the seat completely, and then opening up the gearbox to access the plastic gears.
The seat has two nuts and two bolts holding it down, and then there is some wiring underneath that must be disconnected.
The gear box lid has 6 torx bolts holding it to the gearbox, once you've removed the bolts the gearbox lid should easily pop off.
If you buy solely the plastic gear you will need to press it onto the rod. This can be done by placing the gear on a solid surface and then tapping the rod into the gear.
BMW E36 seat repair is typically pretty quick and simple, this repair took me about 45 minutes total. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
6 year old vid coming in clutch thx my man
Thanks for the video! Got my seat fixed. No more gangster leaning e36
Lmao same
Thanks to this video I just had a successful recliner repair...All went smooth. And like someone else commented, keep the E36 videos coming...
Damn, I was hoping it was the mechanical style seat! Oh well, now i can tackle power seats when the time comes. Keep making e36 videos please, theres not enough of them.
Nick Franklin thanks for watching! I don't believe the mechanical style is very different, I know the seat removal is the same.
Hard to add to this lesson. Thank you so much for taking the time. Saved me for sure. Couple of things. Perform task with seat back tilted forward as it allows access to those motors. Also removal of the back motor first makes access to the back screw for the front motor much easier. Hope these help your repair go easier.
Well here’s my dilemma, my seat can’t be leaned up because it got stuck in the all the way down position 🤣
Nice video, you saved me a couple hundred bucks!
where you buy the gear?
Thanks..
I have the same problem. Thank lord you made this video😁😁
Beautiful neighborhood!!
Thanks! To bad I downgraded to a DC studio.
legend!
Great video!
Nice n simple will be doing this project soon.
Are both plastic gears the same size? I’m planning on just changing both since I’m opening her up.
Any suggestions on what to do if seat is all the way back, and won't go forward?
any link to where you bought the new gear and rod
Great video but where can I find the rod??
Someone know the part number for the rod?
You ever figure it out?
I did this before. I got the BavAuto gear for like $30. That went out in like a year and now my seat won't move back to get to the main bolts so I gave up.
these motors are easily repaired... what happens is there gets to be a filmy grime buildup on the commutator where the brushes ride.. clean them with sand paper, and its fixed.. the motor looks like u cannot take it apart but u can.. very easily. pry the tabs up on both ends, then slide the top and bottom off.
None of the seat controls on drivers seat of my E35 are working -- passenger's side works well so I don't think it's a fuse... hoping it's a simple fix. Thanks!
Is it possible that a cable could stretch and it isn't the gear for one of these seats?
How long did each seat take you? From taking it off, repair, bolt back on.
Thanks for the video, can you provide a link for the part? ( The whole rod with the plastic gear installed ) . because i'm in the middle of this process and they sent me the green gear instead of the white i ordered .
Hi mate, could I get a link for the gear you bought please as I need one these swines?
Mine has a metal rod going to the gear box and can’t get it off

The blue convertible in the back is literally my car. if it's a '97.
It's a 98 325i!
Where can I get to buy the plastic gear with metal attached to it
Anyone find one? I need one.
Who else here for Zaxby
Why is BMW using plastic gears on a car? Actually, they use too many pastic parts. I have an e36 and e90. Same problem on both cars. And where can i purchase the gear? Thanks
Save money, I have seen a few people over brass gear replacements but the standard is plastic.
To save who money? LOL. :-)
@@BryanChance BMW, they do not care about consumers nowadays when it comes to repair & maintenance haha.
Human safety if you move with too much force you can do human injury.
Like I said...
All the selling is plastic my M3 98 plastic gear is really attached to it
I'm trying to get my seats out of my e36. I don't have a wrench that fits over these bolts. They're 16mm, but no wrench or socket I own fits. The screws nearly touch the rails. There is no room for a wrench. And the seat doesn't go far enough forward to get to the rear ones, but I can see no wrench will fit those anyway.
It is likely I will have to cut the seats apart and then drill or grind the screws out.
How much beer did these engineers drink?! This whole car is designed so terribly.
maybe you should just replace the entire piece of $hit seat! Its in really bad shape buddy! just saying!
The seats sell for 200$
