  • BMW E36 recline gear repair diy. Electric seats are nice to have, but they do have a common set of issues that typically occur on higher mileage vehicles. Luckily, most of the repairs are quite simple to perform.
Replacing the recline gear involves removing the seat completely, and then opening up the gearbox to access the plastic gears.
The seat has two nuts and two bolts holding it down, and then there is some wiring underneath that must be disconnected.
The gear box lid has 6 torx bolts holding it to the gearbox, once you've removed the bolts the gearbox lid should easily pop off.
If you buy solely the plastic gear you will need to press it onto the rod. This can be done by placing the gear on a solid surface and then tapping the rod into the gear.
BMW E36 seat repair is typically pretty quick and simple, this repair took me about 45 minutes total.

Nick Franklin thanks for watching! I don't believe the mechanical style is very different, I know the seat removal is the same.

Hard to add to this lesson. Thank you so much for taking the time. Saved me for sure. Couple of things. Perform task with seat back tilted forward as it allows access to those motors. Also removal of the back motor first makes access to the back screw for the front motor much easier. Hope these help your repair go easier.

I did this before. I got the BavAuto gear for like $30. That went out in like a year and now my seat won't move back to get to the main bolts so I gave up.

these motors are easily repaired... what happens is there gets to be a filmy grime buildup on the commutator where the brushes ride.. clean them with sand paper, and its fixed.. the motor looks like u cannot take it apart but u can.. very easily. pry the tabs up on both ends, then slide the top and bottom off.

None of the seat controls on drivers seat of my E35 are working -- passenger's side works well so I don't think it's a fuse... hoping it's a simple fix. Thanks!

How long did each seat take you? From taking it off, repair, bolt back on.

I'm trying to get my seats out of my e36. I don't have a wrench that fits over these bolts. They're 16mm, but no wrench or socket I own fits. The screws nearly touch the rails. There is no room for a wrench. And the seat doesn't go far enough forward to get to the rear ones, but I can see no wrench will fit those anyway.
It is likely I will have to cut the seats apart and then drill or grind the screws out.
How much beer did these engineers drink?! This whole car is designed so terribly.
