Back to the OG after an incredible 12/31/23 at MSG!!!
I have one more wish in my Phish wish dish, and it's that they release this on the rhombus vinyl that Annie golden was holding. Release the OG recordings or re-record it, I don't care. Maybe a 2 disc set with both❤
Yeah, me too had..Love it so much..
This is better than the MSG show, I have to listen to this one to clear my mind after all the revisionism :)
The religious allegory that the piece begins with intrigues me. Huge Phish head for decades, I never heard this. How nice that it became more known after msg23-24.
That AC/DC BAG is totally bonkers.
Mockingbird is clean too!
From this to full on Broadway style production 40 years or so later!
That was fucking magical
Dysfunctional bullshit! College thesis!? A children's book!? Puff the magic dragon!? Are you fucking kidding me!? 😂
Came here after attending the NYE 23. Fucking geniuses all four of them.
Imagine being a professor and receiving this masterpiece from one of your students
With a sarcastic roll of the eyes says. This band is going places. I kid. I love the story of Gamehendge and Wilson and Tela and Icculua and the freakin Book alright?
I don't want to be that guy but we live in an impossibly possible universe and you really think somebody has an already sent that to their professor thinking its gonna blow his little mind
@@bryndoe9495 Trey did. 😉 🦎

Masterpiece?
we finally got it after 30 years!!!!!!!! damnit i love phish! ❤️✌️🙌
This is Phish 101, a prerequisite to any other Phish courses.
40 years
And still the best
Oh my fucking God how is this the first time I am hearing this and I have been a hard-core fishing for over 30 years. Wow oh my God his voice oh my God we’re so fucking lucky. We are so lucky that we get to live on this earth the same time as Phish and Trey Anastasio!
Wow, no way! You are a huge fan and just got to hear this?? If so, that’s pretty lucky actually. The whole “gamehenge” world made up a great deal of their early material and other songs are part of it - I think Divided Sky may be, as well as Esther too, and anything about McGrupp. I find these early songs to be their best, just because they’re so inspired and charming. Really creative too.
@@b.w.22 lol no I meant this recording on CZcams. I took a trip to gamehendge my second show in 1993. I’m quite familiar I have a copy of the book I just meant start to finish on CZcams. I heard poor quality tapes back in the early 90s of this. So it’s been almost 3 decades since I heard it start to finish.😂
@@stacybenstockklein449 - Ah, that makes a lot more sense! Sorta too bad, though - I imagined you just found out that those early songs had this story that connected them together. :) Shoot, I didn’t know there was a book! Haha. But yeah, this is how I remember the tape that went around in the early 90’s, with the same funny errors, so I suspect a lot of what I thought to be copy errors was just part of the original recording. So great to hear it again.
@@b.w.22 do you want to talk about funny errors? For over a year in 1993 until 1994 I thought 2001 was called ZOOL because of the way it was written on my tape covers. #TrueStory. 😆 yes, Trey’s college senior thesis is the book I am referring to.
Busted out last night 🤯
I promise to cry profusely if this is ever played in completion ever again
I was lucky to catch it a couple times in 1994
T L What shows? I’d love to give them a listen. Charleston?
Don’t think it will ever happen again
Hahaha! Me too man.
I saw it the last time they played it. It was right before I moved to Chicago in 1994. I was alone at the show.... It was in Mansfield ma.
Bless the 4-track tape recorder!
My first show was 7/8/9 4 …. Great woods….. The last performance…. Blew my mind …
It all makes so much sense now! I needed to hear these in order. It all came together for me.
I remember the first time I heard this I felt the same
A reminder of the phun, intelligence, excitement, and explorations..all reasons why I fell in love with Phish in the first place!
Listening to this is insane. What an important piece of music history. Thanks for the upload.
I got a bootleg tape of this in 90s and I thought it was like Dead Sea Scrolls, like undiscovered knowledge. Haha, to be young
@@jthomeskillet yah its funny it should have stopped here maybe lol
@@jthomeskillet the existence of Treys Masters thesis…masterpiece, Gamehendge…was first played for me as an undergrad during the 90s, in what became a quasi ceremonial, near religious listening experience…just like that lol. Discovering the existence of this sacred sonic doctrine…an hour into an acid trip which may have contributed to that evening’s festivities, and questioning of reality. Like, wait, Prussia existed, right?when? is this a true story?? Ha ha yeah, Idk if I’d go as far as ascribing religious significance now, but there is something inherently magical about it, to this day. Cheers

Wind from beyond the mountain
The trick was to surrender to the flow
like drop a deuce when you feel a movement?
actually, yup, your on the right track
Actually... the lizards learned their ways from the helping friendly book right? Well it told them to surrender to the flow. And Rutherford says the lizards died from doing things smart people do not do. Right? Or am I wrong that they are saying not to "surrender to the flow"
@@wetrat1120 fancy finding you here, my new theory is since wilson is a traveler he didnt understand the true meaning of the book as becoming a tyrant is not surrendering to the flow, the "extinction" came with Wilson's reign while the lizards "surrendered to the flow" so the flow may have it's spot but it may not be the thing "smart people" do when it leads to your own downfall
@cavan montgomery @@wetrat1120 The reason the Lizards died was because they didn't have the book. Wilson took it and imprisoned it, so the Lizards couldn't "surrender to the flow" and behold its wisdom. This is what lead to their downfall, since they stopped doing things smart people don't do after the book was confiscated.
I've wanted to hear this, in this format, for 27 years. Wish you could hear all the thoughts of thanks I thunk!!!! 🤙🤙
I love how the instruments set the mood for each scene.
This is why Phish is one of the greatest bands of all time. TMWSIY/Gamehenge RULES. Thanx for posting this.
I had this on cassette in the late 90's and i always thought my copy was horrible, but this sounds to about the same grade as what i had then. I am not dissing it, its still absolutely charming and wonderful. the contrasts between the music and the narration. These melodies flow directly in to Junta, and its all so amazing. the creation of a plot and narrative and struggle for control via an invented ideology and how the turmoil's of life intersect with that of the story. the uplifts in the story and the pull and push of emotions, and how the music follows. and then... THE FAMOUS MOCKINGBIRD!!! oh my this is making me a kid all over again. my soul is made of marble, but in her gaze i crumble to dust on the wind, the wind from beyond the mountian
wait a sec, that's the jam from Esther playing behind the intro of Col Forbin. Never realized that until now. Huh.
You're talking about The Lizards, not Col Forbin.
I was listening to this last night and had the same realization and thought that was awesome, it's such a beautiful progression

I remember listening to a boot of this tape about 10 years after it was recorded and man does this stuff hold up over time.
Oh Praise Icculus! A copy that doesn't have the cut into Wilson! Thanks very much for this!
I think I have this on a Maxell XLII-S somewhere. I got to dub it from a buddy when I was a sophomore at UVa in 1992. Only saw them 4-5 times over the years but loved them in my college years.
The beginning reminds me of Ulysses. The shaving thing. Perfect storytelling
Wow. The Christmas present that I didn't even know I received in 2012 until today.
Trey's voice makes me giggle hysterically every time he narrates. The most beautiful music I've ever heard is playing in the background and Trey's voice is so completely dramatic, yet completely deadpan. The background vocals get me too. It's all just too delicious. Wouldn't it have been great to see his Prof's face as he listened to this? I would love to have a copy of this. I'll check the interwebs but any tips/advice would make my day. Great track!! Thank you generous soul for this upload. You've made me a happy camper today. :)
It sounds very Dylan like to me during the narrations. Like someone doing an almost Dylan impression.
Phish is the most beautiful music you've ever heard?

Colonel Forbin stared up at the mountain
And wiped away the beads of sweat
That glistened on his brow
His tired feet were buried in the quagmire
And his bloodshot eyes saw all that lay between him
And fulfillment of his vow
And he felt his fingers wrap around a knotted root
And pulled his body upwards
To a sea green mossy boulder
And he dragged his weary carcass [or "shit-ass"] up the mountain
And he climbed so slowly
He climbed so slowly
Ahead
Ahead
Suddenly he heard the crack of thunder
And the rocks began to crumble overhead
And tumble down the mountain to the
Dismal swamp that lay beneath the jagged cliffs
through which his path had led
And the earth began to quake beneath his feet
And the mighty mountain changed before his eyes
And he stood amidst a sea of dust and rocks and stones
Cascading down the mountain
And a thousand birds were headed for the sky. Oh...
The sacred creed will be yours
And if you wait until tomorrow
The sacred creed will be yours
To devour
Yours
To seize
And to obey
Obey
When the dust had cleared, the colonel lifted up his head
And was driven to his knees by a blazing beam of light
And he saw the silhouette that stood before him
And he bowed in reverence
Trembling in the shadow of the mighty legend's form
Icculus the prophet stood before his eyes
Looking down on Colonel Forbin
Where he shuddered in the puddles and the muck
And he quietly addressed him
And he spoke so slowly
He spoke so slowly
Ahead
He said
Colonel Forbin I know why you've come here
And I'll help you with your quest to gain the knowledge that you lack
I call upon my faithful friend the mockingbird
To fly and seize the helping book and bring it to your shack
And a tree of knowledge in your soul will grow
And the Helping Friendly Book will plant the seed
But I warn you that all knowledge seeming innocent and pure
Becomes a deadly weapon in the hands of avarice
And greed
The sacred greed will be yours
And if you wait until tomorrow
The sacred creed will be yours
To devour
Yours
To seize
And to obey
And to obey
And the famous mockingbird swooped down out of the sky and landed on
Icculus's shoulder, and Icculus whispered into the bird's ear, and it flew
off toward Wilson's castle in the valley below.
Fly Famous Mockingbird
Fly famous mockingbird
Fly...
Fly famous mockingbird
Fly...
Fly famous mockingbird
Fly...
Fly famous mockingbird
Fly...
Fly...
Fly...
Fly famous mockingbird
Fly...
The next morning at the camp Errand Wolfe and Rutherford stood frozen in awe as the famous mockingbird flew out of the sky and laid the Helping Friendly Book at their feet. The quest for the book had dragged on for so many years that it's sudden appearance left the men staring in disbelief, unsure of what their next move should be. The shock wore off quickly though, and Errand Wolfe shot into high gear. He snatched up the book with one hand and the famous mockingbird with the other, and began to inform Rutherford of his plan. He would first kill Wilson, and then put the Helping Friendly Book to work for him. With Rutherford's aid he fastened the famous mockingbird to a pole, with glue and rubber bands, to insure the secrecy of his mission, and then set out to find the only man in Gamehendge who could handle the job of eliminating a King.
