    I'm French and I've got to say, the British are the absolute masters of comedy and satire. So clever, so refined, and so hilarious. I love the razor sharp wit of the classic BBC comedy shows, especially Black Adder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, and let's not forget all the great shows Jimmy Perry, Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft made. Don't ever let people start censoring this great British institution. Laughter and satire are some of the greatest tools of enlightenment, they freed Europe from radical religion and absolutism, and are poisonous to extremist ideologies. Only tyrants are afraid of satire. Vive le Royaume-Uni!

      It's a sad fact and disturbing fact that the British army executed 309 of it's own men during ww1 some of the boy soldiers amongst its ranks. Their 'crimes' ranged from nothing more than desertion due what we would call mental breakdowns.The term LMF low moral fibre was used as an excuse to ensure execution. constant shelling and combat would almost definitely have brought about this .Sadly the senior high command would have had given instructions that men of a low military standard would almost have certainly been made an example.The use of fear to keep the rest in line. The age ranges of thses soldiers ranged alarmingly from boys in their mid teens to men in their forties The relatives of the men shot at dawn have campaigned for many years to successive British governments to have their names pardoned .

    • @chrisholland7367
      @chrisholland7367 Před 5 lety +66

      @@DavidBrown-cp2vm Have you ever studied or looked into this subject. Do you think their crimes warrented the death penalty .Do you think that every individual that was executed by the British army in ww1 deserved to die .How would you have coped day after day under a hail of bullets and artillery fire up to your knees in mud and filth or seeing your mates blown to bits in front of your eyes and not been effected by it .I don't know what kind of an effect it would have had on me because tens of thousands of British and Empire troops did it for us including my great grandfather, you realise those men were shot by men of their own platoon with men from their own company used as spectators.The court's martial system was usually a formality so the trial was a farce and a decision by the senior officers had probably already been made before the accused had even had chance to state their case .'case closed' The trials and subsequent executions were designed to strike fear into the British army to prevent whole sale mutiny understandable since the French army had muntined. A protest against the appaling leadership and shocking level of slaughter . The British high command struggled to cope with the technology of industrlised warfare, they were no longer fighting colonial actions of bygone era. I don't understand your logic when you think that men under extreme conditions are weak and break mentally.

      @chrisholland7367 Před 5 lety +24

      @@MrDaiseymay I get what your saying.But 100 years after the end of ww1 this is still a contentious issue. They were as you've stated different times although large numbers of the French army muntined because of the sheer waste of life on pointless battles such as verdun. The British army remained loyal ,disciplined and stoic as they've always done throughout history. To maintain a level of discipline and maintain control the senior high command needed the threat of the ultimate sanction should soldiers step out of line although there are cases where men it would appear were picked at random and case made against them. Even with strong mitigating circumstances the presiding judge had probably already made up his mind and the courts martial simply went through the motions. This will always be a emoutinal issue the families who's relatives were shot at dawn.

    Absolutely genius to make the firing squad leader such a jolly good old fellow and it's also a brilliant satire about your basic infantry man. Joking and humor is a big part of staying sane on the battlefield and at the same time it's completely absurd to crack jokes amidst all the horribleness of war, as this scene demonstrates.

    Really great scene, and a classic example of British Humour and it's best. I think the fourth season of Black Adder set during World War I was probably the high point of the entire series - certainly the final episode is sheer genius, completely unexpected, and like all great humour, reveals more of the truth of a situation than any direct drama might.

    • @Iason29
      @Iason29 Před 7 lety +3

      No Im sorry but i disagree...In your motivating the students part you have a point. But the number one lesson I learned in my history class first year of high school was the word "bias". The child learns for the first time in his life that official authority is not all love and gravy and that there are official lies out there, not just the ones made by bad people.
      Watching that series during class time is a bad idea as it is full of stereotypes, and has nothing to do with history at all. I can only conclude that the teacher is either not good at his job or he is a crank, or member of the crank community using amateur brainwashing tactics to promote anti-imperialistic beliefs to 13 year olds so a generation can share his private selfish beliefs, which simultaneously receive patronage from his government.

    As an American anglophile, I sometimes get a charge out of seeing actors from series long ago pop up on a series I am watching currently. "Hmmm, where have I seen that actor before?" Just saw the corporal's actor in a bit part on the late Richard Griffith's series "Pie in the Sky". Even more amusing to have seen my kids experience it in reverse, they see actors they were introduced to in Harry Potter and Lord of the rings/Hobbit seen later as younger actors when they walk into the room when my wife and I are watching an old Britcom.
