You made me think was it Haig's way of mincing ( chew up the millions in pointless assaults against machine guns ) the lower class to get rid of them , dirty , smelly flea and lice ridden Serfs
@Jonathan Williams As a percentage, sure. In total, I'm afraid not. However your point does disprove the initial claim. Such strategy will sooner rid GB of the upper class than the starving masses.
Haig was not really a bad general. He was probably a bit above the average. He was modernist, to his credit, and remember he managed to hold down the job far longer than French did. His main flaw was the fact strategy and tactics had not caught up with the state of warfare. However this was true for everyone. It was not until 1918 that this changed much, on both sides. And in this, Haig played a large part in inventing combined arms warfare, which was the basis for so called 'blitzkreig'. Furthermore more he was actually reasonably popular with troops, there are many indications he was affected by their sacrifice rather than a 'callous butcher'. It's only in the 1950's and later that revisionist history started to perceive him and British officers generally as incompetent buffoons, whilst the Germans were incredible (bear in mind the German commanders at the Somme literally had their base of operations in a Chateau. This stereotype was just as true for them as anyone else, perhaps more so).
Hardly ever mentioned is Rowans portrayal of the fictional French Detective Jules Maigret for I believe just four episodes, Brilliant for those of us who go back many decades, again with this character, he has the mannerisms etc spot on.

@@andyray89 I'm shocked and appalled.
Father Ted, red dwarf, peep show
People say "toilet humour" is low quality, but here we see a wondrous use of it. "Up your alley", "stirring", "final push".
it's positioned well in this instance
Yes Darling... Never gets old, funny every single time 🤣
One of the best comedy shows of the last 50yrs it can always be relied on to giving you a laugh😂😂
blithering general is just wonderful
I just got the "soft, strong and thoroughly absorbent" joke and "It's right up your alley" joke. British jokes are so cerebral it's hard to catch up sometimes.
No, you just need to know the slang, not much thought involved for comprehension.
Not that cerebral, but it needs a bit of context to be learned.
I wouldn't say that's cerebral, it's literally a poop joke lmao
@@11Survivor yes--but you DO need to know SARCASM, when you hear it. 'cause Melchet didn't.
The greatest comedy ever written.
Soft, strong and thoroughly absorbent - love it.
- and right up your alley!
Blackadder II, III and IV are as brilliant as a very brilliant thing on a brilliant day doing brilliant things.
I've just recently begun watching this series even though its been around and I'm hooked. British comedy has become my newest addiction!
We used to rule world, don't you know
... Also try Father Ted. 👍
The English wit is classical and can always cause a rise if you understand it.
@@Kraken54321 father ted isn’t British, would it still have the same appeal? I’ve heard it’s only funny if you’re Irish/aware of Irish culture.
British comedies are universal, whereas Irish comedies seem to be quite Irish focused (I do love Irish comedies personally, like father ted or killinascully, but I can understand people who don’t get Irish culture not liking it)
@@johntonssen7231 You only need a bit of context to understand Father Ted and a lot of it's inferrable. It's a bit more slapstick than Blackadder, but definitely worth watching.
"I thought it would be right up your alley".
Stephen Fry a genius in comedy with Roman. Captain Darling plays his part perfectly also.
Tim McInnerny, as 'Darling, was the only True trained actor of the bunch, He's often on stage Playing Shakespeare rolls.
I love the episode where they have a model of the battlefield that turns out to have a scale of 1:1 !!!
@Captain Sabertache most worms are little. Few grow large, beware those ones.
This was the best series by far
I thought it would be right up your alley 🤣🤣🤣
Blackadder was brilliant 👏 comedy,
Genius writing for a genius cast.
This serie is masterpiece of comedy genius .
After reading about World war 1, this is superbly accurate
You made me think was it Haig's way of mincing ( chew up the millions in pointless assaults against machine guns ) the lower class to get rid of them , dirty , smelly flea and lice ridden Serfs
Rusty Gold considering the fact that you were more likely to die as a junior officer or a general than as a tommy....probably not
@Jonathan Williams As a percentage, sure. In total, I'm afraid not.
However your point does disprove the initial claim. Such strategy will sooner rid GB of the upper class than the starving masses.
It's why we skip WW1 and go straight to WW2. WW1 was a silly place.
This stereotype was just as true for them as anyone else, perhaps more so).
still watching this. I have to say the comedy is gold
Hardly ever mentioned is Rowans portrayal of the fictional French Detective Jules Maigret for I believe just four episodes, Brilliant for those of us who go back many decades, again with this character, he has the mannerisms etc spot on.
It proved what a really great actor he is, watching him as Maigret I forgot all about his role as Blackadder.
As much as Captain _“Darling”_ is the butt of so many jokes, if memory serves me properly, he chose to *Go Over The Top* with Blackadder (& Co.) at the very end.
No, he was ordered to go by General Melchet
Wrote "Bugger!" In his diary
I called my cat 'darling' after this show...."hello Darling"
Cat: *Its Captain Darling to you*
But the shows called blackadder, or blackadder goes forth. Its a bit like me saying i named my dog Phil Mitchell, after the show. Anyway its 8 years later, hes probably gone over the top by now
@2:02
POV: You are watching VDV commanders plan their attack on the airport
O M G THE WRITING IS SO CLEVER, COUPLED WITH THE GENIUS OF THE CAST. ANYTHING ON AT THE MOMENT THAT COMES WITHIN A MILE OF THIS? VERY DOUBTFUL,
‘Donsense! Let’s hear the list in full!’ I do love a bit of donsense. E-e-e-exactly!
