I remember watching this as a kid. It was the one sketch that took up a whole Monty Python episode. And it was so funny. It finished with the traveller back in England, and saying, 'Now that was a lucky escape.'
Still one of my favourite (and most underrated, as it was in the last season) moments in Monty Python history. And also unusually for the TV series, the whole episode was this one story - so it's like a mini-movie.
It's pretty great, but it's also got some pretty damn racist stuff in there. "Housy Housy" and all that. Funny for quite how ridiculously over-the-top racist it is, but still racist.

That said, it's a problem not because it's "not PC", but because, well, unironically characterising Chinese people the way they do is pretty harmful. We're smart enough to know the difference between this and reality, but not everyone knows exactly where the lines are and that could cause issues. Not saying that people actually think the Chinese are as depicted in this episode, but reinforcing negative stereotypes is generally harmful anyway. I realise I'm overthinking it a little, but I don't want to just sit by an leave discrimination unchallenged. I'm a fan of old, offensive media myself, but it's important always to have a little asterisk next to it to say "while this is funny, but also represents some outdated and disrespectful ideas".

Actually a good majority of their sketches were lame... But the ones that are funny were fucking hilarious. Let's just put it this way, I've seen a lot more bad Monty Python sketches than good ones but the good ones made the bad ones worth it.

Incidentally, Rokossovsky would subsequently wear a pistol at all times, saying that he would not surrender if they came for him a second time. Recall that the Python crew were--and are--history buffs.
Over the years, Michael Palin has become my favorite Python. The dude just slays me. I mean, they are all incredible, but I just find him the funniest of all.
You should see his travel documentaries and Ripping Yarns. Even when he's doing something serious, he'd slip in a joke. In Italy he once said "Why do Italian men make you feel like Worzel Gummidge?" Brilliant!

The other two were "The Golden Age of Ballooning" and " The Michael Ellis Sketch". "The Cycling Tour" is my ATF and the one I recommend to people who've never seen Monty Python.

What's really funny is that those three words are never even pronounced by Russians when they execute someone. They may be saying "ready" and " fire", but they never say "aim".

This is a great satire of the "narrow escape" adventure dramas. Once he seems finally out of lives, we see "Scene Missing," then he's back in his peaceful England home, declaring what a fantastic escape that was.
I'm relying on a 40 year memory, but if I recall correctly, they finally did line him up for the next try, went through with the whole, "ready, aim fire" bit, then immediately cut to a scene of him far elsewhere saying something like, "What a miraculous escape!" Too bad they left that out.
Mr Gulliver came to his senses after a tomato hit him, then ran while calling for Mr Pither and climbed over a wall and then the soldiers attacked them with bayonets. Then we see the "Missing Film" caption. Maddening genius!!
Pither's friend came to the rescue, but found himself in the sight of the firing squad, which at this time was charging with bayonets, then it cuts to a "scene missing" cue card, and then cuts to them in the field like you said.

As you 'grow up' so to speak, Monty Python gets funnier and funnier, and you understand more why. I started watching when I was 14, and found it funny because it was silly and absurd and randomly odd, but now I'm 22 and I've been through more of life, I understand multiple reasons why each joke in each sketch is funny in different ways and various aspects of the pshyce. PURE QUALITY IN OTHER WORDS. .

What's really funny is that those three words are never even pronounced by Russians when they execute someone. They may be saying "ready" and " fire", but they never say "aim".

This is a great satire of the "narrow escape" adventure dramas. Once he seems finally out of lives, we see "Scene Missing," then he's back in his peaceful England home, declaring what a fantastic escape that was.

Pither's friend came to the rescue, but found himself in the sight of the firing squad, which at this time was charging with bayonets, then it cuts to a "scene missing" cue card, and then cuts to them in the field like you said.

As you 'grow up' so to speak, Monty Python gets funnier and funnier, and you understand more why. I started watching when I was 14, and found it funny because it was silly and absurd and randomly odd, but now I'm 22 and I've been through more of life, I understand multiple reasons why each joke in each sketch is funny in different ways and various aspects of the pshyce. PURE QUALITY IN OTHER WORDS. .

granted south park is filled with potty humour,but it also does some of the best topical,and political satire of the day. the most recent season has been an entire storyline about trolls on the internet (i'm sure we've all had our run ins with them),and the u.s. presidential campaign.

I think Monty Python invented trolling. Their sketches are a masterclass, and no one was safe.

The guards seize the startled Pither and drag him away. The senior general strides back across the stage avoiding Gulliver, towards the general who addressed the audience.
General: Shall I seize him too?
Senior General: No, I think we'll have to keep him, he's going down well.
General: He's more fun than he used to be.
Senior General: He's loosened up a lot. This is an old Lenin number.
Cut to Pither sitting in a cell.
Pither: (voice over) April 26th. Thrown into Russian cell. Severely damaged my Mars bar. Shall I ever see Bude Bus station again? (two Russian guards throw the cell door open) Oh excuse me... (they grab him and march him out of cell)
Cut to exterior of a door leading out into prison yard. The door is thrown open and Pither is marched over and stood against a blank wall. There are lots of small holes in the wall.
Pither: (voice over) What a pleasant exercise yard. How friendly they were all being.
Officer: Cigarettes?
Pither: Oh, no thank you I don't smoke.
Pither facing a line of uniformed men with guns, obviously a firing squad.
Pither: (voice over) After a few minutes I perceived a line of gentlemen with rifles. They were looking in my direction...(cut to Pither against the wall looking behind him) I looked around but could not see the target.
Officer Blindfold?
Pither: (very cheerful) No thank you, no.
Officer: (stepping clear) Slowotny! (the firing squad snaps to attention) Grydenka... (they raise their rifles) Verschnitzen.
Drum roll. The firing squad takes aim. A messenger runs frantically up.
Messenger: Nyet! Nyet! Nyet! (he hands the officer a paper)
Officer: A telegram? (examines it) From the Kremlin! The Central Committee! It says...'Carry on with the execution'. Verschnitzen... (The squad raise their rifles)
Pither: (voice over) Now I was really for it.
Cut to shot of officer with his hand raised. The same as before, only without Pither in shot. Drum rolls again. He brings his sword down. Volley of shots from the firing squad. The officer is looking in Pither's direction. Long pause.
Officer: (to soldiers) How could you miss?
Soldier: He moved.
Officer: Shut up! Go and practise. (to Pither) I'm so sorry. Do you mind waiting in your cell?
Pither is flung back in his cell by the guards, and the door slammed.
Pither: (voice over) What a stroke of luck. My Crunchie was totally intact. I settled down to a quick intermeal snack...
But he is bundled out again. Pause. Shots. He si bundled in. The officer appears at door.
Officer: Next time. Definitely! (to aide) Now then, how many of them have been injured? Oh God...
Pither: (voice over) As I lay dwon to the sound of the Russian gentlemen practising their shooting, I realised I was in a bit of a pickle. My heart sank as I realised I should never see the Okehampton by-pass again...
Mix to Pither's sleeping face, waking up, shaking himself in disbelief at finding himself in a beautiful garden, with the sun shining, the birds singing. He is in a deckchair, and his mother, having poured him a jug of iced fruit juice, is gently nudging Pither to wake him.
Mother: Come on, dear. Wake up dear.
Pither: Mother!
Mother: Come on dear.
Pither: So, it was all a dream.
Mother: No dear, this is the dream, you're still in the cell.
Mix to Pither waking up in the cell. The officer enters carrying a rifle.
Officer: OK, we're going to have another try. I think we've got it now. My boys have been looking down the wrong bit, you see.
Pither: Oh no, look, you've got to look down the bit there.
Officer: Oh I thought you had to look down that bit.
Pither: No, no, you've got to look down that bit, or you won't hit anything.
Officer: Alright, we'll give it a whirl. Guards, seize him. (they take him out)
Officer: (as he leaves) Listen. You've got to look down this bit.
Also reminds me of Black Adder, where Adder's about to be executed by a firing squad. The head shooter asks, "Is there anywhere you'd like to stand."
Adder replies, "I'd say on the other side of the wall would be just about right." God I love British humor. No "getting kicked in the balls" comedy like here in America.
