2024 Charger Daytona Twin Turbo vs S650 Mustang GT V8

  • I give you my thoughts on the recent spy photos of the 2024 Charger Daytona which reveal all the makings of an internal combustion offering despite Dodge only stating that it was going to be an EV. This will make for an interesting comparison between the 2024 S650 Mustang GT with its 486 horsepower V8 and Dodge's new 2024 Charger Daytona, which will likely come equipped with their new Hurricane inline 6-cylinder turbo engine making in the neighborhood of 520hp and be all wheel drive.

    I’ve been a Mopar diehard LONG before the L-cars and the Gen III V8’s ever existed. I’ve built hot slant-6 Scamps, turbo 4.0L I6 Jeeps, and numerous 80s & early 90s Turbo II cars; they were all magnificent, and way different than anything else on the road. Yes I’ve had several insane Mopar 4-cylinder cars as well- 1st gen Neon ACR’s, R/Ts, a sleeper Neon Highline with a stroked 2.4 with a massive turbo, etc. Nevermind the SRT4’s that I also dabbled in. Hell I even supercharged my 00’ Dakota RT.
    Mopar has and is so much more to me than two outgoing full size cars and their V8 engines. Mopar Inline 6 engines are bulletproof, they just last forever- boost or no boost.
    I’m excited and fully invested in Dodge releasing new product finally- and to have TT I6 gasoline engines in that mix should light the fire for Mopar Diehard fans the world over. These turbo engines are equally at the roots of Mopars rich history, as much as the V8’s from the 50s & 60s; let’s not overlook the fact that Chrysler Corp. was at the forefront pushing the envelope in the 80s to build great rare performance machines when GM was pumping out and installing impotent 5.0 V8s in every RWD vehicle they built in the 80s.
    Hell I’m rooting for Dodge- I HOPE the Charger Daytona EV is a kickass high performance EV that gets the sales to compete against the high performance Teslas. I know the Hornet NEEDS to find customers in regular people wanting a fun, efficient commuter crossover.
    The sooner Dodge gets back to being a full line automaker selling MANY compliant cars to the masses-, as it once did but ceded all of its market nearly a decade ago- the sooner we get cool limited halo-cars with killer engines. The ONLY reason the V8 is going away is because the GEN III’s just aren’t emissions compliant- and Dodge sells nothing else to generate the capital needed to invest the cash needed to develop a new high end engine family for its cars. Stellantis invests in Jeep and RAM- the Hurricanes were developed for Jeep & RAM, so Dodge as a consequence gets that engine family.
    Dodge doesn’t generate the kind of money for Stellantis to invest that kind of money for specialized V8 engines for a couple high-hp muscle cars that sell in numbers under 100k/yr. The V6 models even the last few years still accounted for nearly 58% of all Chargers, Challengers, 300’s, Durangos and Grand Cherokees built.
    Dodge needs to establish other models and get its CAFE way up. Dodge has pulled off miracles before, and it can again. Dodge needs to get that minivan mojo back too- it all helps get the brand get back to building its wild engines once again. There is still time- GM and FORD both continue to invest in their V8’s- but they also sell many different vehicles to offset those V8’s.

      I am a very long time Moparite. I had and still have a love affair with the Slant Six. It is terrific to see Chrysler putting some eggs in the straight six basket. My wife has a Pentastar Cherokee, I would expect her next car would be a Hurricane Hybrid to suit her type of driving if such a vehicle becomes available. She is already making noises about the Wagoneer but we have a couple of more years to go before we replace her Grand Cherokee L.

    Great video, good food for thought RacerX. You touched on some good points from the performance point of view. My take on the forced induction engines is how long will they last? I purchased a 2006 charger Daytona R/T torred red brand new (divorce present) lol. I still own this car to this day 314k and counting. (Original drivetrain). I also purchased a 2021 scat pack brand new. IMO the naturally aspirated engine hemi will have a longer service life than the twin turbo engine offerings. I don’t know why people are talking like production on this vehicle is confirmed….let alone for 2024. It’s still very much in the development stage. The new year is two months away. Stellantis would be heavily promoting this car if ANY version of it was going on sale for 2024. All they’re hyping is that rebadged Alfa Tonale. A lot of wishful thinking going on here.

Until their CEO publicly admits the power crystal (any system wherein a consumer has to pay extra to use features or capabilities that are already built into the vehicle they own) is a mistake that insults their customers, and apologizes for not firing the person who suggested it, I'll never buy another.

    A hybrid turbo i6 would be a great used car for tuners. That setup could easily push 550hp with a tune and bolt-ons. If you can picked up a used one in 10 years for $15k that would be a great value

  • @bonbon1286

    I could be wrong but the 2.0l 4xe would be the most ideal powertrain for a entry level gt charger, stepping up the 420hp hurricane SO in an R/T and probably a 525hp HO hurricane-6 in a Charger Super Bee. The Charger is going to be an all around better car than the mustang especially with some direct connection upgrades, jailbreak packages and so on. I know people are saying about the prototype truck being a TRX but strategically speaking it would seem to lend itself more to being a rebel than a trx. Reason I say that is a hurricane is closer to the output of a regular raptor whereas the trx and raptor r are really the two trucks that compete. It would make sense for the Rex to continue on with a cleaner hellcat powertrain, leaving everything else move forward with a hurricane-6. Just my thoughts.

    • @Timmer2022
      @Timmer2022 Před 8 měsíci

      You bring up some interesting points. I think it's way too late for them to try and develop a cleaner hellcat platform thou especially if it would only be used in the TRX since everything else hellcat powered is going to be done. They could do something similar to the raptor thou and offer the TT I6 in the standard TRX and still use the hellcat platform in a higher trim or special edition model. Keep production numbers low to where they would have a minimal effect on their CAFE numbers. That's the only way I see a supercharged V8 staying in the picture thou.

Check CJ pony parts makes a video comparing the s550 base 2015 which was the lightest to base s650 and premiym. The base s650 is 3740lbs while the premium with brembo package s650 is 3780 n base s550 is 3780lbs. It is not heavy amd yes the performance is similar is simply s550 with added goodies on it.
