Greedy Dealers Have hit a new Low! 100K for Lugnuts? Demon 170 Buyers Beware!

  • After 7 long months of waiting, the 2023 Dodge Demon 170's are finally starting to arrive at dealerships; however, many buyers are now saying the dealerships are failing to honor their signed contracts on these highly sought after cars. Some dealers are demanding even more money than initially agreed upon, but they are concealing it from Dodge and the customer until the car arrives. Many are charging bogus fee's such as $100,000 for Lugnuts, so that they can claim that they only charged the customer MSRP. The lying and the deceit from many dealers has gotten completely out of control.

It’s time for franchise dealerships to go away and manufacturers to sell direct to the consumer. Most people would rather go to the dentist than visit a dealership for a new vehicle purchase. I was in the retail side of it for over 40 years and was lucky enough to work for a mostly honest dealer principal.
Saw a lot of shady deals from other area dealerships and talked to several salespeople that bragged about the last customer they had and were so proud to have taken for a several thousand dollar price gouge.
As more mom and pop dealerships go away and are replaced by large dealer network stores it will only get worse

I do agree but I think the issue is there isn't enough time. Dodge is ending production of all Chargers/Challengers/300's in less than 60 days. Good luck getting a court case going in less than 60 days unless you can get a lawyer to settle with the dealership. By then the dealership may have already sold and delivered it to another customer. I don't think a judge can force a customer who then bought the car to give it to the original person who had the contract. The dealership knows all of this so it doesn't care.
In the end these dealerships need to shouted out by name anywhere and everywhere to avoid them and why with proof. Once they start to see their new and used car sales diminishing they'll change their tune if they can before they go bankrupt. They may be winning the battle here and there but if they keep it up they'll lose the war one way or another.

When I ordered my 170 I went to the dealership with my damn attorney and she made up paperwork for the dealership to sign stating that they agree to sell me the car at MSRP. The owner of the dealership had no problem signing the paperwork. Now this is where it gets interesting.
So I knew the exact day my 170 would arrive at the dealership. So I saw the trailer pull in and watched them unload it from start to finish. Then I walked into the dealership and said “That’s my car”. A sales manager who happened to be new said “No it’s not”. I said yes it is. I already paid for it in full, which I in fact did. He tried to gouge me for an extra $75,000k. So I had to run home get my paperwork that was signed and notorized by the owner of the dealership and showed the manager. He said “I don’t care about that”. You clearly just made that up on your computer at home. I ask for them to call the owner. They refused. I then called the police and the chief showed up and even told them, to give me my car or he will start arresting people. They still refused. So finally my lawyer calls the owner who calls the manager and finally, after 3 hours, I loaded up the 170 onto a flatbed and brought it home.

I would be reasonable about this. I would give the dealers one opportunity to refund all overcharges immediately, even if the customer didn't mind overpaying. At the first refusal or hesitation by a dealer, his dealership is terminated, permanently.

Automotive companies should take note: anyone involved in vehicle sales (including car dealerships, banks and law firms) who fails to identify a money-laundering scheme may risk considerable penalties (and even criminal charges) under stringent AML regulations. Going to a dealership to buy a car is worse then going to a timeshare. At least with a timeshare you get 50 gift card and a 50 gas card lol.
I highly suggest you never and I mean never buy a new car when you can get the same model and features with less then 10k miles for way less.

Dealers were doing this crap on Hellcats when they first came out. One dealer I checked with had 3 Hellcats. All you had to do was buy the last year's model Minivan beside it for full sticker and sell it back to the dealer for a dollar. Then they would sell you a Hellcat. I haven't set foot on that dealer lot since 2015 and will never set foot on it again.

What blows my mind is that there are THIRTY THREE HUNDRED of these cars being produced. You'd think they're making 33 or 330 by the mania over these things. I have a 600LT McLaren in a rare color. Only 720 600LTs in total produced for US market. My Fistral Blue spyder is probably 1 of 10 or so. I also have an Inferno Orange C6 ZR1 (1 of 69). There were only 4600 C6 ZR1s made total across 5 years. Dodge is making nearly that number of just the Demon 170. I paid under 100K last year for my 10K mile ZR1 in one of the rarest colors made. The LS9 in the C6ZR1 can make 1000whp on stock long block reliably on an engine that stopped production a decade ago, and it can actually turn too. My McLaren is worth probably 250K. Why the hell are people willing to pay MORE than that for a Dodge that they're making thousands of? It's a cool car, not hating, but I just don't get it.

Big motivator behind not ordering a Demon was not only the markup/bidding war games, but also the uncertain future of the brand and poor build quality of their products. I experienced multiple quality issues over the years with Stellantis. Mainly interiors that come apart in garage kept vehicles and uneven panel gaps. Replacing a shoddy dash in five years laden with tech from a brand that might not be around anymore didn’t sound appealing. I feel like these Stellantis mopars are going to be maintenance nightmares in the not too distant future. I can see a lot of well cared for examples of Demons and Hellcats rolling around with ratty interiors and maybe a bank of mechanical gauges where the infotainment screen used to be. Anything seeing regular use will be a total basket case within a decade. They’re just not on par with the former Daimler-Benz versions.

If you decide to sue, you would have to get an emergency injunction to prevent the dealer from selling the car to anyone else till you can sort the issue out in court. If the car is sold then you can never fix that. Even if you get that car back it is now used and likely has miles on it. So there is an excellent likelihood you get it and they can't sell till the courts settle it.

As much as I hate the dealer mark-ups we are seeing, I have a funny feeling about saying it's wrong or banning it somehow. Our free market economy is driven by demand, and pricing of any and all goods is a function of what total cost was incurred to make it and get it to market by the manufacturer and make a profit, along with the mark-ups of everyone along the supply chain before it gets to the consumer. The Demon 170 is 100% a luxury item, it is not required to live, it is not like someone selling cases of drinking water after a hurricane for $100 to people dying of dehydration. The dealers are inundated with people wanting to buy one and they might only get 1 or 3. So what are they to do? Put yourself in their position, you have say, 2 Demon 170's coming in, and you have 10 people willing to pay $250k for them and 20 people willing to pay 200k, and you have 3000 willing to pay sticker. ASSUMING YOU HAVE NOT MADE A CONTRACT WITH ANYONE FOR EITHER OF THEM, would you not sell them for the most you can get out of them?
The bottom line is I cannot think of a single good that a retailer sells (at any price level) that the consumer can buy and then turn around and sell it for triple what they paid. If there was such an item, everyone would be buying the crap out it and reselling it for a big profit. What makes a car any different? I'm not a dealer, I own a heavily modded REWB Challenger and would love to have a new Demon 170 too. But I am also a small business owner, and I believe in the free market economy we all participate in where supply and demand determine a good's value. Just my .02 cents.

@@RacerX9you are placing blame on the wrong player. It’s the manufacturers fault for dealer markups. Manufacturers could stop this all by giving the customer placing a deposit for vehicle build the right of first refusal to buy vehicle. Instead the vehicle is shipped and belongs to dealer until the dealer sells it to the customer placing the order. Manufacturers have created this demand by making limited production vehicles you have to expect the market (ie dealer markups over MSRP) will occur unless the manufacturer stops it. Compare it to video game console manufacturers, Sony, for example they set the price for the new PS5. Retailers can’t charge over the set price. Period. Otherwise they won’t get any additional allocations and fines etc. at end of day this is the manufacturers fault not the dealers.
