- I tell you about the highly anticipated Hurricane Cat X engine that is under development by Dodge and what this could mean for the future of the brand.
We know how capable the current high output (HO) hurricane engine is already that is being put in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, so imagine how incredible the CAT X could be if it made 1000+ horsepower.

I'm a 392 owner, but this new engine looks to have great potential in a Challenger or Charger platform. Gotta go with what is being offered, anything is better than an EV.
No doubt😂
No it's called growing a spine and standing up and saying....no!....I don't have to take what is being offered when what we have works perfectly......if you don't buy they can't sell ....if they can't sell them they will either go under or go back to what worked...... and most buy them for the look at me look at me vanity and when that don't attract attention anymore you go out a buy the next newest thing.......
The EV model looks sick imo I own a Hemi as well so it doesn’t matter to me that Dodge is switching it up
@@ronaldmoparornocar9590Sounds like you have no idea why all of this is happening.
@@A1V124 well then enlighten me.........if you have the answers..
I like to stay optimistic like you when it comes to these hurricane engines because ultimately it's a way better option than EV. If Dodge does decide to use them in a production muscle car/sports car type vehicle I hope they do it right. My only concern with any turbo engine is how the turbos will hold up, how it will sound, and if there will be a good amount of lag. Realistically though, I still think nothing can touch that Coyote engine when it comes to making crazy power gains. That engine is really like a cheat code.
Yeah but getting parts for the coyote will be a lot Harder in the near future. Lot less of those built not as many spares floating around.
Porsche has been turbocharging their flat six for decades and have no problems!!! But then, Dodge is not Porsche !!!! 😂😂😂
@LWRC well said.
Dodge engineers- "we can build this to run with a porsche".
Dodge management- " we know, but we only need it to make it to the end of the warranty"
The 2JZ is certainly a legendary performance engine, I think Dodge's approach makes a lot of sense. It may not sound like a hemi but at least its not an EV either.
Exactly ! 2jz is still an impressive engine ! So I praise dodge for going this route
I was just thinking the same thing. BMWs M3-M4s make well over 500hp and that 2JZ is able to hold over 1000hp. I’ll take one as long as they don’t put it in a SUV.
@@johnkrucar2119you praise Dodge for going this route 😂. You realize they are simply giving you a less powerful motor and making it up with turbos because it’s more efficient for emissions and lastly they can make 1 motor to do it all. They sold out people don’t buy a dodge for anything other than what they are known for and that is racing. No body cares that it’s faster than the na v8. In drag racing the hemi still makes more power than everyone else that’s because of the v8 and the tech behind it. They went ev and then made an inline motor because bmw is sellable my like hot cakes and they are being fined for having big v8s still in 2023. And you praise them when simple tech that is given to 6 cylinders to avoid emission ie turbos instead get rid of it all together. Dodge are ram by Europeans now they love baby motors especially in a time where the ev is trying to take the world over. Guess what gay ford still makes the coyote and Chevy makes their v8s still. I guess the true Americans stay strong.
And you all are talking on this being bmw guys 🤣 thinking you know about the hellcat motor because if you did then you would all know the blocks can handle 1700hp. And over 1000 whp no build required. Bmw struggle to get to 1000 whp and so do 2jz’s shit the s55, b58, atlas 4200, and ford barra are all better than the 2jz and ev motors in terms of power delivery but none actually make unbelievable power without loads of work. Simple boltons on a cat will get you there. Maybe try turbos on the hellcat rendering the same advantage not like it needs it anyways because no inline car comes with that much power stock nor do you see to many competing past the 1200hp. It a business move that’s actually fucking you and nobody sees it 🤣. I guess dodge will just take all the bmw fan boys and children 🤣.
@@joshreynolds729 same as putting a super charger on a v8 to get horsepower you wish to get!
As a 392 owner there’s no replacement for the sound and feel but I do hope that they do continue to develop the I6 hurricane engine. (If there’s no other choice) If it can compete then it’s relevant. EV is definitely not an option for me personally because there are way too many unsolved problems for them to be a real option. I’m still really going to miss these Hemi engines.
Although I’m keeping my 392, I am curious to see how Dodge moves with their future lineup of vehicles and motors. It all sounds interesting so far.
A no markup dealer. That’s a beautiful sight! ❤
Racer X you convinced me to buy a 50th Anniversary Widebody Scatpack over a Hellcat. I appreciate All the info you provide. Especially new information about Dodge. Much Love, from Houston Texas!
5:39 Cruising around the streets in my 6 4. 😅. Yes Racer X said it.
I’m optimistic about the hurricane engine, hopefully they use them in the challenger platform in the near future and be affordable to blue collar class!
I hope they never put that foolishness in a charger or challenger platform just let them rest in peace and bring back the Dodge Stealth as a sports coupe and 4 door sports coupe and bring back the dodge colt as rebranded vehicle and the Dodge Monaco as luxury vehicle
Affordable coke on now that’s not happening
@@redhunnid5142 too late lol. Coming in 2025 with the Charger Daytona. Love it
Most Scat pack, hellcat, hellcat redeye and demon owners care about the hemi v8 experience and sound.
Until they keep getting their doors blown off by these? The used market will be full of Hemi's for sale.
Wow.. crazy is the Hurricane engine will be. I would love to see the Cat in action. Thank you RacerX for the informative video!
Racer x has become a corporate leach for stellantis
I think it’s impressive. I too am a speed and performance enthusiast, so yeah my favorite is a V8 but something with that much potential on basically stock internals able to handle that much power would make it really fun!
If the 6 cylinder could put out that much power at an affordable price, I would be interested, but keeping my hemi lol
When I had my 2015 sxt I was looking into a twin turbo setup. This appears like it would be awesome. Dodge version of the Grand national. If they bring out a new lighter chassis for the next iteration of the challenger and throw that engine in it. It would be a beast.
Grand National was V6 this is Inline6
@@Snarf_Le_Wombat both are 6 cylinder boosted engines . Inline vs V6.

Good Stuff RacerX!!!
Love the Enthusiasm!
I remember first hearing about Direct Connection back in the 70s and at that time since I had a 1973 340 Cuda, Ed Hamburger and his parts offerings came onto the scene.
I never had the capabilities to modify my engines over the years, running Factory Stock literally, although a buddy talked me into placing an Edelbrock Manifold on my 340, it didn’t go any further.
I don’t think that Mod made any difference.
Perhaps I needed to replace the Thermoquad too!
Well, I was about 20 years old then, but learned enough to carry 2 replacement spare parts: Voltage Regulator and Bypass Hose for the 340.
I had trouble with both and think I replaced both about 3 times.
That made me move onto the next car with the hope of it being more dependable.

Great report ... nice job on presented the facts...always great to see you!
It’ll be interesting to see how close the upcoming performance vehicle/vehicles with the inline 6 look compared to the giulia quadrifoglio since it’s based off that platform
I’m 70 years old now. I bought a brand new Ram 1500 4x4 Big Horn when I retired in 2010. First change I made on the 5.7 was install a Mopar CIA. A couple of years later I added a Carven ‘Competitor Series’ cat back exhaust. I can’t even tell you how great that HEMI sounds to me. I hope to keep it til I die.
So glad I pulled trigger two years ago on a HellCat . Love it.
FrankieD SRT in Germany 🇩🇪. Brother, you are a true salesman when it comes to this. If the community could get past the historic SOUND thing, and concentrate on Power, non the less to say, The Environment, we could be on our way to placing ourselves on another evolution or plateau with this motor. You are MOPAR‘S savior brother. Keep selling it. You’ve got my attention!!!!😮
Why does moe always look like he is about to say something but stops himself 😂
I think we hemi guys are mostly about sound but definitely can’t be mad at dodge for keeping the power
They are so much about sound they can't hear anything that isn't a hemi
I understand the excitement of the possible horsepower out of these hurricane engines. The only thing and I am torn about it won’t have that beautiful sound of a hemi V8.
Everyone thinking dodge won't go the way of Pontiac makes me giggle
I would like to see the engine block, the crankshaft and its journals. I need to be convinced that the engine is strong enough to withstand the power for 200000 miles.
I'm a diehard Mopar fan as most of you guys are in here, but it seems to me that people forget that Mopar made another great engine that was a 6 cylinder. The slant six. Even those engines had some aftermarket support. Anyways, what I'm saying is don't dismiss it because of the number of cylinders it has. It's still very powerful and it can prove it's weight in gold.
Awesome content buddy hope momma x is doing well praying for her 🙏

I was at roadkill, that straight 6 sounded just like a old 60s or 70s 6 with a 1 1/4" tail pipe.
It's called a muffler
Sorry but ford tried to get us on board with a V6 GT because it made more power than the 05-06 GT. The old one with the V8 is setting standing mile records year after year with more than 3000hp on the factory block while the 2017-2022 GT has a couple people maybe making 1000hp. I do think in every other way the new one is better but the engine is not
Big things to come for dodge
Very interesting to what these inline Hurricane engine lineup will be capable of what as
far as horsepower, the low end torque is always there in the inline six, it's the top end
horsepower were the difference, but that were the twin turbos came to play. It will be interesting.
Can it be put into a 3500-3700lbs-ish coupe or sedan? If so, I’m waiting. Great vid brother! 😎🤙

i wouldn’t mind that engine in the durango with awd it would be a good family car
If Dodge uses the new banshee body and stick a twin turbo Hurricane in it. I would buy it all day long, if it’s reasonably priced
People are going to find out, a FULLY brand new car wont be cheap. Tooling costs etc Thats why Dodge ran the L chassis an extra 20 years past Mercedes' timeline. Why put billions into a new platform when youre printing money by throwing on a bigger supercharger and a playing musical chairs with the hoods.
Spoiler alert, it won’t be reasonable
Wagoner luxurious interior exterior needs a remake in my opinion. Wayyy to boxy especially back side

YEP!!!
Got a ecobooosy f150 definetly going for the hurricane
I'm keeping my scat pack challenger, that V6 doesn't interest me at all, I cant believe dodge is crazy enough to go down this road
It’s not a V/6, it is an inline 6. More power and torque and a lot less weight. Less weight over the front end means much better handling.
I'd take one for a test drive. If it's as fast and as efficiently aspirating as you're claiming it is? I just might get one. We'll see what happens. Thanks for including what Dodge is thinking about doing with their performance cars though. I hope it's worth looking into.
Dodge should’ve kept that Direct Connection Challenger to themselves. It just looked so embarrassing. Just my 2 cents
I actually like the idea of 540 hp in a car or truck that doesn’t cost 100 grand
I also heard that Cummins is building an inline 6 for the heavy duty segment. It will be the 6.7 diesel engine but will be running on gas with twin turbos 13:06
And turtles can fly...
I've been wondering when one of these automotive manufacturers would bring back the inline 6, everything always comes full circle. The old chrysler 4.0 straight 6s are legendary, along with fords old inline 6. Of course with Dodge/Ram they're still using the inline 6 Cummins Diesel engine, which I personally own an 07 with a 5.9. Straight 6 engines are so much easier to work on and so much more reliable with the straight up and down piston movement vs the rod angles of the V pattern engines.
X first, I want to say I appreciate everything you do for the car community I do. On the other hand, feel like this is an apples and oranges type of comparison. If they threw the better internals and two turbos on a 6'4, yes it's going to cost more but comparing naturally aspirated to something that comes with twin turbos even with the power comparison in my mind is apples and oranges again. I will be interested in seeing how things turn out, sales, etc. But meanwhile I'll keep my modified 6.4 I'll hang on to my modified 57 RAM I actually considered a newer 3.6 VVT all-wheel drive Challenger. Just for the simple fact, I like to platform it's a shame they're doing away with an icon
I need that rho!
great vid btw !
Imagine taking these powertrains and put the same type hybrid system behind it that the jeep 4Xe has. Something like that with a few tuner upgrades from direct connection and aftermarket would really make the next generation performance cars truly epic!
Oh, that hurricane in Florida
Wait until Dodge fans find out the engine is made by BMW 😂
I’m actually waiting for the hurricanes to come out before I buy anything from Dodge. Really cool to hear about the options though. Very excited! What an awesome upload man. Great ideas and I’m looking forward to see how much horsepower we can get out of those. Awesome Mr X👊

@@RacerX9sellout
What a joke.. I don't sell out.. I don't need to .. I understand cars and technology.. Stop being so short sited and do a little research lol. Sellout WTF
Well RacerX, I can agree on some of your points. There are things, both present(as you've stated), and past that support a successful I6 motor. Go back 27+ years in technology, and compare the Ford 300 I6 to the 302 in a truck, or full size bronco platform. I had a 1990 full size bronco, w/300 and 5 speed. A friend had an '89 full size w/302 and automatic. The only place the 300 didn't outperform the 302 was acceleration and speed. The 300 was better on gas and easier to tow with.
That said, I think the hurricane motors will be a good fit for the suv's and trucks. And, I would rather have an I6 charger over a power wheels, but I'm going to wait and see what they have for us on the muscle car front. Right now I, lime others still feel a little bit abandoned.....especially seeing the new mustang offerings.
Finally, I hope your mom is doing better, hopefully you got enough messages to lift her spirits!
i had a 1985 r150 300 4 speed and a 1993 f150 300 with fi, this one i put 444500 mi on it and was still running when i sold it. the 93 with the 5 speed would run all day at 85 mph.
All these HP numbers are mind blowing. The biggest question is how long will they last. A NA engine will always last longer than a boosted engine. One of the reasons Toyota has extremely long lasting vehicles since they use mostly NA vehicles. I love performance but I still want to get some miles out of my $100k vehicles like that jeep.
Toyotas turbo engines also last long, so do bmw b58s which are pretty reliable.
I had 116k miles on my PT turbo when I traded it in on my challenger, and I ran 20lbs of boost on the stock 4cyl engine with factory upgrade pcm and injectors for nearly all of it.
Wow I'm impressed 👏 👌
Great video
If this becomes available in newer models in the future, I see a whole lotta challengers and chargers on the used market guaranteed .
I need that in my e36 for the next drift event 😂 3:10
Rumor from Detroit area is trans and rear end is staying the same so you can drop the 392 or hellcat motor back into the car Early 07 when commercial trucks went to pollution control manufacturers got around this by making Glider kits
I have two 6.4L Hemi equipped vehicles and a third vehicle that was originally dreamed up with a supercharged 6.2. That being said 🤔what you are saying sounds like an interesting option with a Hurricane drivetrain.
18 year old me would have been excited because of the fast and furious. But I'm too grown to settle for anything less than my scat.
Very interesting indeed and I'm one that will eventually follow change.
I work with the 1500 and the new high output trx is kinda of crazy
I’ve got the new ram 1500 hurricane and I have it planned to get 700hp out of mine in the future
The turbos look big on the HO version. If you compare them to the BMW S58's 750whp capable factory turbos, this engine should make around that, 750 wheel hp, if not more, which is bolt on Hellcat numbers out of a 500hp motor.
Crazy, a hurricane making SRT-10 Viper engine power numbers from factory in a freaking suv, and we don’t even think anything about it lol. Hopefully they put them in the ram, was always disappointed they never had a 6.4 1500!
Do you think you’d ever make a video review of a SRT 10 just for the fun of it? Not many great review videos of that truck out there!
Mercedes 2.0 4cyl 416hp 369lb trq. 208 hp per liter. Not bad!
sure, for about 5 minuets,,,
I like how no one is mentioning life expectancy. It is a very complex engine which means it will be very expensive to repair. Look at the ford turbo 6 and all it’s problems. Also, duty cycle! A smaller turbo engine works harder to do the same job a large displacement na does. Fuel mileage will be worse in the real work as well. I’ll keep my V8.
I'm so glad that the american market finally got its own 2jz
I'm looking forward to the hurricane engine and more curious of what they are going to drop it in besides the jeep.
The only thing the in-line 6 is gonna lack is the sound but an inline 6 with a burble tune sounds nice as hell imo. So I’ll be fine if they make in-line 6s they are faster than the v8s anyways I mean look at the M4
Meh, the v8 will still make more power than an inline 6
haha yeah because youre going to live at 6000 rpm all day in that V8 to make that peak power number.. everyone is going to get a lesson is how a inline style engine drives... TORQUE. I seriously doubt they'll make it a high strung 7-9000rpm like the 2JZ or the RBs... if they do, it;s going to be a fun plant, torque of the inline turbos for mid-high end
@@campbell0162
Besides, my dad could get their old 12v Cummins to chirp the tires on the 2-3 shift, that made 160hp and 400tq.
@@campbell0162depends on the v8 and i6 you’re comparing, how you’re looking at tuning, what handicaps you’re making for one versus the other, and if you’re willing to actually give the i6 a chance. “More cylinders + more displacement = more power” is a formula that works with NA engines. Once turbos enter the conversation, it becomes an exercise of desired outcomes and budget. If you MUST have V8 sounds, then no hp number from 2Js, RBs, Barras, B58s, or S58s will matter and I get that. BUT if the goal is to continue making ICE cars faster despite basic EVs existing that will trounce 90% of our cars at a drag strip; then an i6 is just as strong of an option as a v8.
@@campbell0162This video literally disproves that, Dodge's 6.4 can't touch the high output version of the Hurricane engine, and this engine can be tuned to 1000hp and beyond. No NA hemi will touch these.
this mans eyes are majestic
I think you thought of a perfect engine for their new platforms. Let’s pray they see this video and get some ideas
I’d like to see dodge do something different like a newer body style charger and a challenger with the new engine
That would be the EV have you been listening to dodge?
I'm a big fan of inline engines like the inline flathead 6 that Chrysler had from 1924 to 1964 and the slant 6 they had from 1960 to 2000. They were no powerhouse engines but they were very reliable and very tough engines that were very hard to kill and if the Hurricane is anything like inline engines of the past they should be very good and have lots of torque. The only thing I don't like about turbo engines that you have to have the turbo spooled up before it makes power so the take off I assume will be sort of slow until it hits enough RPM for the Turbo's to shove the air down it's throat to take off unlike the supercharged engines that make power from stop to go.
BMW showed what a straight 6 can do. They are naturally balanced and put out power. It is at the limit of crank length I would think. That is why straight 8's had problems, especially with rpm. Strong block, high flow head, turbos, what's not to make power.
I am sure that cruising the gas mileage goes way up also. The motor is always running on some pressure.
I always saw potential in the inline 6. Torque monsters
Hey Racerx, I tried to PM you I believe it was Saturday I got a message from Todd on the demon 170 site and he said your demon 170 is in production congratulations go mango
I can see Stella coming out with a dual overhead cam v8 in the near future …
“They started quietly investigating in Hydrogen Fuel ⛽️ There is a good chance they do this smaller displacement & maybe even a new 7L for nostalgia sake they’re just getting the whole portfolio updated to make room for other stuff imagine the hype in a few years”
“Kuniskis said the last of the V8 powered “L” cars new platform new fuel new possibilities”
I still think inline 6’s sound great. I had a cammed Ford inline 300 that sounded pretty raspy. I’ve also heard some of the 2JZ’s that sound great. In terms of vs V8, to me, it doesn’t matter. It’s whatever puts a smile on my face. I want to see how this new Hurricane does.
I own a Grand Wagoneer with the 510 HO Hurricane as well as a Durango and Ram 1500 with the 5.7. The Hurricane has some great power when you are at speed, but the turbo lag is significant if you are used to a NA V8. Dodge (Jeep), if you are listening, this thing needs lower 1st gearing and/or an electric hybrid motor to get it off the line with some authority. At speeds over 20, highway cruising, its amazing.
Exactly! The low end response is lackluster!! Everybody thinks I'm crazy when I say that! I work on these things and I can feel the difference when jumping from one vehicle with any type of Hemi to a Wagoneer with a Hurricane! The SO is waaaay worse...
4.7 superchared sounds good to me and i call it a hemi spark plugs go thru the valve cover
I think they could already be showing us what they will be doing because of the wagoneer. They will keep the hemi (the 5.7 or the 6.4) but it will be the base engine in the lower trims of the car and the hurricane engine will be in the higher trims and that will keep the most people happy. Sounds crazy but I think Dodge would be crazy enough to do it lol.
Fantastic video, Racer X! I am excited about the potential of the Hurricane, HO! Tuners and modders are going to love this new engine! 1200+ HP is insane! Hopefully we will see some performance vehicle offerings from Dodge with this new engine soon!
My question is durability. So much power, through so many moving parts, on a mass production bases, etc.
Would like to see Australian built Barra inline 6 up against the Cat
tis could be a good competition to BMWs s58 inline 6 engine.
Honestly I don't care about the make there are many amazing vehicles out there. I'm planning on looking for a hellcat because speed is my drug of choice and the sound they make is awesome. Hoping when I retire in April I can find a challenger decently priced.
Keeping the Hellcat!I will say though my new GMC Canyon with the 2.7 turbo 4 banger isnt bad.Curious how reliability will be?
These will be a recall nightmare
Dude! I called this a year ago. I commented on one of your videos that the new Charger has a hood that looks like it could house a inline six or buy a create engine from Direct Connection. But shouldn’t we see some 24 models yet?
But you can’t beat the sound of the 6.4
Eargasam..
Direct Connection regarding the straight 6 Hurricane: "Comfortably make over 1000 horsepower" ANYONE who isn’t encouraged by that should look at the power AND longevity of the 2JZ. I understand the 2JZ is less expensive than the Hurricane but if it's "all that" the Hurricane should be celebrated!
