  • On this episode of Rock Rods Tech Tuesday Jake Burkey of the Busted Knuckle Off Road shop is going to teach you everything there is to know about Hydro Boost Brakes and why they are the perfect way to get better off road brakes on your rig. Hydroboost brakes uses pressure from your power steering pump to multiply your brake input. We sell a ported Hydroboost conversion kit for off road vehicles that features a laser cut brake pedal and Wilwood Master Cylinder. If you have any questions about doing a Hydro Boost Brake Conversion let us know in the comments.

    Classic Performance Products makes a pretty decent system. I’ve installed them in jeeps, pickups and cars. I don’t recommend using a stock master and reservoir, most the time the mounting ears don’t quite line up with the hydro boost, the reservoir holds half of what a oem/aftermarket hydro boost reservoir does, and the master piston body is half the size of a hydro boost. If budget is a concern. Go to a junk yard and grab one out of a 3/4-1 ton truck. Ford, Chevy, Dodge doesn’t matter too much they’re all basically the same dimension give and take here or there. Remember bigger is always better in the world of brakes!

    Will a bad power steering pump affect your hydroboost? And/or vice versa? What about low power steering fluid?

    • @DefectiveDetective420
      @DefectiveDetective420 Před 2 lety

      If the power steering pump is looped into the hydroboost, then yes, braking performance will suffer. If power steering fluid is low, you'll have a hell of a lot more problems than just suffering brake performance. You may find your steering gear and pump fail prematurely.

    • @andrewtaylor4754
      @andrewtaylor4754 Před rokem

      if you have low power steering fluid then you probably have a leak at your power steering pump or one of the lines. And yes you will have weak breaks due to the pressure not being able to build and hold if your power steering pump is the culprit.

    Hi awesome video - have a E-450 Motorhome with Ford’s hydroboost but with all the weight its stopping power is seriously crap so can’t let my petite wife drive as she can’t put enough force on the breaks for a hard stop not to mention emergency breaking, in fact i am far from being able to kick off the antilock on pavement too, do you offer any solution for increasing breakpower? I,e. turning cylinder to give it more pushing surface area to multiply the psi of the pump more? Desperately needing to improve the breaks, thanks in advance.

    how does this plumb in with full hydro steering?

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 Před 3 lety +1

      @Ole Coot > The power steering pump does double duty with the pressure valve determining the pressure. Rack & Pinion are 600-800 PSI while recirculating ball gear boxes use 1,400-1,600 PSI. The pressure hose goes from the pump to the inlet of the hydra boost unit. It has a fitting for a second pressure to the steering gear box. Both the hydra boost and steering gear have low pressure return lines. The pump will have two return line fittings for the factory or reman from box. It is common practice to help cool the P/S fluid on the low pressure side. From the gear box, the mount a correct size metal line that mounts vertical or horizontal under the radiator but behind the bumper & front valance panel. Cool outside air removes heat and the pipe makes a “U” turn, returns to short gear box line, then onto second pump return fitting. Double or inverted flare was common but gave way to o-ring type fittings. AN fitting use a single 33 degree flare to make it Bubba-proof the seal. Army-Navy fittings are installed by 19-25 year old kids, so to get a good seal & keep them cross-threading, they use the aluminum fittings. Different colors and beaded hose looks cool but just makes a wallet thinner. Hope this helps since it’s been a year. Now June 21, 2021. ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired
