My issue was a bad power steering pump. Started out as a whine when cold, got stuck in mud once and then it started whining at all times, getting air in system, and leaking. I couldn't tell where it was leaking, seemed to be from reservoir cap or power steering pump so I just hoped for best and replaced pump which took care of my problem.

Great video that I wish I had watched yesterday. I changed the pump and lines in my Duramax and didn't realize they had to be bled. I went straight to trying to flush the system and of course, the steering wheel had no power. I tried a couple of times and the engine was running for at least a full minute. Hopefully, I didn't ruin the new pump.

Bought a used BMW about a month ago. Steering was quite firm, obviously not enough to "steer" me away, but definitely on the firm side. Anyway last night I was testing my brake booster, and doing a fair bit of brake pumping. Power steering was absolutely not on my mind at the time, didn't raise the front end and turn the wheel or anything. Today I get into the car, back it out of the driveway and immediately notice the power steering is way smoother, like night and day difference. Did I inadvertently bleed something from my power steering lines to bring about this change? Its the only thing that's plausible, I also used some techron yesterday but that can't be it...

I replace my power steering because it was leaking fluid. I notice the hose leaking fluid and wasn't sure if it was just the hoses or the pump so decided to change both and not take a chance having to come back and change one or the other. However even though it was leaking it was steering easy and breaking perfect although after I changed the pump I noticed the steering was harder and after following this procedure I noticed I lost my brakes now I have to really step on them hard for it to work and it takes a gorilla to be able to turn the steering on my truck now even after following this procedure and doing 60 Cycles. Too bad they took my old pump as a core otherwise I would go back and put it back on. I don't know what to do now. I don't think it's my booster I don't see it leaking and I know there's nothing wrong with my master cylinder either. Any idea what could have gone wrong and how could I fix this situation now?

@@stitchthisditchthat259 not sure, new brakes , new power steering pump, bleed the system. Bleed the abs system , also I drove out on a dirt road and hit the brakes hard while doing pretty good speed. Abs worked as it should and brakes worked even better after that. The abs system needs to be bled using a abs bleed scanner or computer . Somebody told me to go on a dirt road and drive fast and hit the brakes and it should bleed itself . And it worked for me.

Ok is this procedure the same for Chevy as well? I only had to replace the pressure hose from hydro boost to the pump the dealership tech told me turn it lock to lock with the motor off 11 times and that will bleed it. They never said anything about pressing the brakes.
Also how do you flush the old fluid out? One video on here says to disconnect the return line at the hydro boost and run a hose from the HB down to a drain pan then start the truck, slowly press the brake pedal and hold it then turn the wheel 12- 3 in both directions, refill pump as needed his was whining badly, keep repeating until you see clear fluid. @Steeringproshop  Před 5 lety +7

Jon Dize aka DIZEMAN your reservoir cap is vented. I recommend bleeding the system with the cap off. It won’t suck air in because once the air escapes the fluid weighs heavier than air. I also like to be able to see what’s going on inside the reservoir, it gives you a good idea how much bleeding is necessary.

I replaced my Power steering pump, First my belt broke, after belt was replaced, power steering started pouring out trans fluid. I did the 5 cycles, 90 times, but with cap on, and it currently has a small whine @ ideal, and no power steering, and when I push on the brake, makes a loud whine, a little push back, but does stop Any advice ?

Thanks for the informative video. As you are going through the cycles and it keeps burping out fluid, can the fluid get low enough so you are sucking in air again? (Like with bleeding brakes) How often do you need to top up the fluid? It seems like when I add fluid, I loose it all again the next time I start turning the wheel.

I was able to do this with the battery and air box out. Then have the the door open window down. You can lean out the window and see the power steering reservoir. You can see the fluid bubble when turning the wheel. Thought this might be helpful for someone doing it by themselves. What if the power steering reservoir keeps puking fluid out?

Hugh Dugan when the reservoir is puking Fluid out it’s because air is escaping and pushing fluid out. It happens

Or is it to the left to the right left right left so total it would be three lefts 2 rights does that make it complete cycle or is it left five times until the right five times that would give a total of 10 unless I'm doing unless I'm thinking this wrong then you three steps down

Ellis McNeely you could. Is so hard to diagnose over the internet or phone but I HIGHLY recommend flushing out the house brand crap and use either AGR brand, Swepco715, or genuine AC-Delco Power Steering fluid. Even if it’s in a Ford! Fluid quality does wonders!

Good thing the Ford FSM states that the hydroboost system is “generally self-bleeding”. What that equates to is; “go ahead and drive the car sensibly for the next 2 days to let things bleed out.”

Great video ,I drive an Avalanche so I bottomed out in a hole yesterday . The brakes seized up it seemed ,along with the steering. After waiting till today I cranked the vehicle and the steering works but when applying the brakes I noticed the foot pedal wants to stay stuck down about half way so it takes my foot under it and pulling it out back to its normal resting position. So I'm asking will a simple brake bleed be the fix? Or am I possibly looking at purchasing a new booster.
