I saw this in theaters in 1977 when I was 6 years old. It was so far above anything that had been done in a sci-fi film before and the first one that looked like everything in it was real.
Obviously, you were too young to have seen 2001, A Space Odyssey in a theatrical release or re-release.
Doug Trumbull's effects in Silent Running a few years before Star Wars were pretty good, as well.
@@dngillikin those space scenes were static. This ships just moved in one direction in front of a non moving camera. This was the first to have a you are there feel.
At this point, it should almost be recommended for someone to watch a movie or two from ‘72-76 prior, just to show the context of how SW ep4 changed … everything
78' for me as didn't come over to UK till then .
Hehe I was 1 month old when it came out. I didn't see it until a little later. I saw VI in the theater though.
It’s hard to explain just how incredible the impact of this film was, at the time I was a 10 year old boy and to see this in the cinema was amazing.
@Winters_Rath I was 11 ;)
Yup, 11 here. I was pretty sure the film industry were done making movies of any kind, cuz they were NEVER gonna top THAT. Glad I wasn’t entirely correct on that call.
i was -9 years old
I was 9 and when Luke revealed his face in Mandalorian I was 9 again.
I was nine and I was obsessed from the moment Darth Vader made his entrance
I think the guys already told you during the premiere, ...but there are not two "Moons" on the horizon of Luke's planet (Tatooine), but two "Suns" ;)
The three original Star Wars movies shaped my childhood and are still my favorite movies ever. Seen them literally hundreds of times and I know every word spoken and note of the soundtrack by heart.
The fact that George Lucas included the looks of Aunt Beru And Uncle Owen when Obi-Wan is mentioned and fear Owen mentions when says Luke is like his father becomes important for future films.
I’m glad you started with Episode IV, the BEST way to watch!
The only way to watch it... you have to watch IV for V and VI to make sense.
(there are only 3 Star Wars movies... the rest is just... crap)
💯

I saw episodes IV-VI in the theaters as a kid when they were re-released in, I believe, 1997. It was amazing even then.
23:10 Little funny story about that. This particular scene wasn't in the original movie, and was taken out after filming, but was added later for a 1997 rerelease. Back in 77, Jabba wasn't meant to be the slug creature we now have, and was more human-like, so Han was just walking AROUND him.
The small creatures are Jawas and the bigger ones are Tuskens. They are the natives of Tatooine. Since the planet used to be much more of an earth-like planet, it was covered by oceans and, of course, land. These two species were then one. After the planet dried up, they began to separate and continue their own evolution
So glad you started with Episode 4 -- watching the movies in release order is in my opinion the best way to watch them! The sequels (1999-2005) hits far deeper if you have already watched the original trilogy (1977-1983) and know the characters and the universe they live in. PS. The movie Rouge One (2016) is kinda Episode 3.5, it's right between Episode 3 and Episode 4. I highly recommend to see it once you've completed both the original trilogy and the sequels!
When people say "sequels", I believe you actually mean "prequels" (Episodes I - III). ;)
My dad introduced me to star wars on vhs when I was 5 in 1999. My favorite saga and trilogy till this day.
Emma, every planet: EARTH!
Hahaha
I was 13 Years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatres. The Special Effects were ahead of its time!
"Spesh effects"
Welcome to the Star Wars universe! Hope you enjoy the experience!
Can't wait!
I saw Star Wars in 1978 when came out in the U.K - Mindblowing! Us original Star Wars 70's kids were truly blessed to have experienced this fresh out the box! 🙏❤

I was about 16 when this was released - at that time it was just called 'Star Wars'.
I just wish that the pre-99 version was more available. The digital additions aren't near as realistic as it originally was.
Yeah, availability of the original editions would be nice. There has certainly been a lot of advancement since the special editions were done, though. I really wouldn’t mind if they had another go at them.
About 10 years ago I paid $80 for A New Hope on DVD with Original Theatrical and Digitally "Remastered".
It was worth it
Have a search for Harmy's Despecialized Edition - comes pretty close to the 70's release version of the film
"99 version"???? 🤦♀🤦♀
Well, Emma, you made that film really exciting all over again! Crazy cool 😊
Glad you think so!
I think R2-D2 the Swiss army pocket knife of the Star Wars universe is my favorite.
Star wars episodes 4-6 is basically a space opera
I was almost seventeen when this came out. I must have seen it six times at the theater and it was amazing to watch on the big screen. It was quite the phenomenom!
One of George Lucas’ inspirations for the film was watching Kurosawa’s samurai epics. Lucas saw that he could follow the story without needing to be told every detail about the world of feudal Japan. So he adopted that mindset for this film: keep the story moving, let the audience work it out. When this film came out, it moved very *fast* for the time, and is still pretty well paced for a film 50 years old.
It’s paced better than 95% of movies.
Joseph Campbell and 40s serials also
I watch a lot of reaction videos. I mean a LOT. I just want to say that this is a very well edited video. Specifically the edits of the actual film. You managed to encapsulate a majority of the film, in a very satisfying way.
Favorite part: Episode 5
Favorite character: Luke
This is by far my favorite film score! I bought the music for the Original Trilogy about 20 years ago!
Thanks. For sharing !!!!!
You know what's cool Emma, is that within just a few weeks you watched the 1976 Academy Award winner (Rocky), and now today the 1977 winner of the Oscar for Best Picture.
Err... I think you want to check the records for the Oscars. Star Wars won several Oscars in 1978 but Best Picture wasn't one of them. It was nominated but Annie Hall won that year.
Episodes I-II and III are a story about the birth of Darth Vader. Palpatine slowly eroded democracy and created the Galactic Empire. The prequels were a mess, but they developed a cult following with kids on home video. They also started a prequel/reboot trend.
The Other Side of Midnight and Black Sunday were hyped up in 1977. Damnation Alley and the English dubbed version of Master of the Flying Guillotine were getting released. Only 47 movie theaters booked Star Wars in June 1977. NBC News did a report when Star Wars fever started.
I went to the theater in 1977 to see this. In fact I was too young to drive (15 years old) and my date (older woman) had to drive.. LOL
Honestly, I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen this movie, and your reaction perfectly captures how I feel every time watching the Trench Run
I count it. Is see this exactely 98 times
I first saw Star Wars A New Hope right after I arrived in Colorado Springs went down to the Citadel mall and watched it at their theaters. Nothing that is I just Googled the mall in it still exists it's up and running and that was around October 1977. Still get homesick for it out there. Big huge difference between the smokies and the Rockies. That's what this movie reminds me of all of that. It's all good. And I forgot to thank you for all the good work you did on reacting to this it was fun wasn't it? But the editing part was probably a real chore.
I’m a 90s baby so I wasn’t around when it released in theaters but I remember my dad and I having a movie night when I was 5, my mom was upstairs so it was a boys night, he looks at me and says “son get ready to watch the greatest trilogy every made”
And I removed that day because attack of the clones just came out! I was too young to go and see it but I did go see revenge of the sith in theaters! I’m so excited for you on this journey you are taking!!!😎👍
You're taking your 1st steps into a much larger world
Amazing reaction, I love how into it and expressive you got!
Thank you so much!!
When I saw this as a kid it was just Star wars then I believe in 1981 he changed it to Star wars episode IV A New Hope. Sure looks like he didn't have any others planned "your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough" and there are other holes in the story that would suggest as much but still an unbelievable great series to watch.
Ya it was definitely viewed as a one and done when it first came out and Lucas thought it had a good chance of flopping so he picked the part of the story that he thought could stand alone.
CZcams recommended this video. I love your reaction to all the aliens, characters and world building in this video.
11:20 "Two moons."
Nope.
Two suns.
Tatooine is a hot, dry, desert of a world with two suns.
Saw this film in NYC movie theater at age 5 in 1977 and still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
You get so attached to the wise, mysterious and deep Alec Guinness character that it still shocks you when he dies.
20:55 Nice to see you enjoy the music in the cantina in Mos Eisley, The Modal Nodes is a great Jizz band.
Great reaction, it's always good to watch someone new begin the journey through the saga, hope you enjoy it.
Saw this first in 1977 when I was 18. Went to theaters 8 more times to see it. It was mind blowing at the time. Would have probably went more, but entered the Army. Watched the Empire Strikes Back first chance I had.
I was 17, and had just graduated from high school when I saw Star Wars. I was blown away. It made me feel like I was 10 again. I remember the whole audience cheering when Han Solo came back to save Luke.
Imagine 1977 😂🔥🥃
The sand locations you were referring to as Egypt were actually filmed in Tunisia, so not that far off. They used the same location again in the prequels.
I was nine, saw this in the theater ant it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Instant fan and still am. Glad you enjoyed this. Among my favorite films! Please, watch the series! You will love them!
After you watch either rogue one, episode 3, or both, you should watch "scene 38 reimagined" on CZcams. It's a fan made remake of the escape from the death star, using modern techniques and choreography to make the fight between Vader and obi wan more modern. It's very good in my opinion
Yes,,,,when this movie first came out,,,,it blew our minds. 👍👍👍💥🤪
This movie changed the paradigm of movie making worldwide. It invented tech thatnhad never existed. It was influenced by Joseph w Campbell's "a hero's journey" on mythology. Also 1940'movie serials.
It was amazing! let's enjoy another part this Sunday !!!
I loved so much your reaction Emma. Welcome to a GREAT universe!!
The Death Star had a millions people on board, officers, gunners, Pilots and enlisted personal along with hundreds of Droids/Robots and thousands of Stormtroopers (the white armored soldiers)
Love the R2D2 impersonation
It might not seem so fancy today, but back in '77 it was lit.
The skeleton is the remains of a Krayt Dragon.
She's so cute looking for the Earth 🤣
Darth Vader's suit it a life support system. without it he will die. the heavy breathing is the suit providing him oxygen
Oh, now I see!! Thanks!!!
Most of the man characters have their own theme music
I was 18 years old when this film came out and I still love these films. Empire Strikes Back is my favorite in the series.
It was fun watching the live stream with all the comments, you should definitely keep on doing that!
There is no specific character that is a favorite for me, it is a collective of heroes for humanity!💜
I love that a lot of new viewers keep questioning what happened to Obiwan. Ben did tell Vader "If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can ever imagine." And he meant it. Obiwan had reach inner peace, and had already become one with the force by the time of this film. When a Jedi (and I think even Sith) is one with the force, upon their passing, instead of leaving a body they vanish completely becoming physically as well as mentally one with the force, and despite their deaths, they often also have learned other skills that allow them to communicate with those they knew who also are strong in the force. His strength in the force is so strong, that as he gets used to being a spirit tied to the force, Ben will eventually be able to form himself as a visible force ghost for others like Luke to see.
The guys in white are imperial stormtroopers. They are human/humanoid. Welcome to the greatest movie series of all time! Well before the dark times, before Disney!
Your energy, enjoyment really came across the camera. The music is done by probably the most famous film/tv composer of all time John Williams who has done of all the main star wars movies, Jurassic Park, all Indiana Jones movies, Jaws, Home Alone 1 and I have only scratched the surface of his work. I am going to watch your reaction to the Empire Strikes back which I think is the best of all of the Saga.
I am going to a star wars concert on 4th May which I went to before and it was epic, especially with a group of fans/cosplayers called the 501st Legion who raise money for children's hospitals by dressing up as storm troopers, imperial officers and Darth Vader.
The original trilogy is 4, (A New Hope) 5, (The Empire Strikes Back) and 6. (The Return of the Jedi) Then the prequel trilogy, with 1, (The Phantom Menace) 2, (Attack of the Clones) and 3. (Revenge of the Sith) And then, there is an in-between movie, with Rogue One.
Ben (Obi wan) Kenobi disappeared physically, however when in hiding for 19 years while watching over Luke Skywalker grow, he learned how to transcend his physical form to the force!! and thus when Vader’s lightsaber blade went through his cloak he transcended from the physical realm to the spiritual
✨✨✨
As a kid we would go to the matinee over and over again. I saw Star Wars 12 times
14:28 in this explanation he was having several flashbacks from episode 1-3 and the clone wars series
The moive Rogue One, which wasn't released until 2016, was supposed to have take place just before this movie.
Love how you look like Leia with the hood up and earphones on.
7:59 this planet is Tatooine
I've been wondering for some time how much of an influence Luke had, in the long term, on Han. the two times in this movie han did the right thing were influenced by Luke. The first, helping on Leia's rescue, was direct persuasion, and in the second time, helpingthe destruction of the Death Star, Luke guilting him into the right thing surely ad an effect.
Hell, I wonder if Luke used the Force on him without noticing. It'd be an interesting wrinkle on the story.
Classic
So you have been STAR WARSED. Enjoy the jerney, with episodes V VI in order of release then episodes I II III then Rouge One a Star Was story, followed by Solo a Star Wars story. Then episodes VI VII IX. Trust me, I may be 64 years young & have all of the Star Wars on DVD & have been a fan since 1977 😉🤨👍👍👍
Such a sincere, brilliant reaction. Loved it. Please continue!
Jabba the Hut was never in episode IV in the original release. The scene with him was added later... it really shouldn't have been.
Great reaction! So glad you’re starting this Star Wars journey!
I love how she got more invested as it went on. We all did!
"...Think we outta know a little more about his father".......... 😏
🤔😆
I love that the Hoodie you're in the intro makes you look like a Jedi. 👍
Great reaction Emma!
Favorite Part: Darth Vader's first appearance. Following the ferocious chase and breach and firefight, strewn bodies everywhere, Darth Vader walks into the devastation, the troops all snap to attention, he looks around, then he strides on, the soldiers falling in behind him in formation. Epic entrance. Actor David Prowse, Lucas, other actors (one know the names of the other actors in that scene?), and crew setting the cinematic bar for villains and villain entrances.
Favorite Character: Darth Vader
Now that you've seen it, can you imagine movie theaters full of kids and teens as excited as you are when the Death Star explodes?
When I was a kid I wasn't that bothered about Star Wars. it wasn't until Episodes I, II and III came out that I took to it.
Before the Dark Times, before Disney+
i always thought that scene of 3cpo wondering alone in the desert was an interesting thought
Emma….The Force will be with you…Always!
Thank you 🙏
You have started on a long journey into Star Wars galaxy far far away, good luck and enjoy your adventures.
Be aware that the special effects and some of the alien creatures I’ve been enhanced in recent years. It is in some ways different, then, from the original 1977 release.
If you continue the story, watch in release order - four, five, six, one, two, three. “Rogue one,” one of the more recent movies, might also be worth watching, if only for the closing scene with Vader.
Absolutely fan-tas-tic video 🎶👍💯😉🎥Warm greetings from Japan 🌏 Ep.V is my favourite part 😊👍😊👍😊👍
A tall actor wore the suit. The voice is James Earl Jones. He's a famous movie. He was in Dr. Stranglove about a plane he was in ready to drop nuclear bombs. It's a comedy with lots of other star actors. He also played in a boxing movie The Great Hope.
He was also in Sneakers, a heist movie with Robert Redford, as well as Field of Dreams, a movie about a baseball field.
@@Fishmorph I remember that movie. I haven't seen it in years. It was pretty good.
That tall actor's name was David Prowse. He was a bodybuilder before he was cast in Star Wars. He was also in A Clockwork Orange, which was made by the same guy who did Dr Strangelove.
you should have seen the videdo game that was in the arcades a couple years after this came out...on the run in to blow up the Death star they managed to get the force involved...you had to play it really loose...over control didnt work
Might want to catch Space Balls next
Emma, like Obi-Wan said, “You’ve taken your first step into a larger world”.
My favorite character in the original trilogy (4, 5, 6) Is Han Solo. In the prequels (1,2,3) is Obi-wan Kenobi, and a close second is Qui-gon Jinn. In random other movies, series? Depends on which one. I could make an entire book of favorites if I were to list each movie, series separately.
hmm, never realized they had darth vader's breathing continue while he was speaking :D
I'm going to start calling them "robos" now. What's a "droid"?? 😅
The moving gunner seats in the Millennium Falcon was copied from WWII planes.
Nice outfit :) You almost look like Princess Leia with those headphones.
Oh thank you!
Darth Vader is asthmatic...... Peace!
May The Force be with you... always.
Thank you 🙏
Hmm... Favorite episode used to be part VI, as a kid, but as I've gotten older, part V is nearer and dearer to me. Favorite character has always been Luke Skywalker for all his trials and mis-steps.
6:23 these guys are “Jawa” desert scavengers who find/steal and sell to live
