Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon. Based on a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who encounter the eponymous Alien, an aggressive and deadly extraterrestrial set loose on the ship. The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. It was produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler, and Walter Hill through their company Brandywine Productions, and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. Giler and Hill revised and made additions to the script; Shusett was executive producer. The Alien and its accompanying artifacts were designed by the Swiss artist H. R. Giger, while concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the more human settings.

_THIS_ is an example of a strong female character. Ellen Ripley was terrified, exhausted and vulnerable. Yet she pushed through it and survived.

Yes, I agree. Women can be strong and still be feminine. Creating a "strong female character" should embrace the characteristics that make a woman unique and not just have her behaving like a man.

The roles were written to be non-specific and they read both men and women for all the roles, unusual for the time. This film would have been so much weaker with a different Ripley. Really, the whole cast (older, bitching about their jobs, sniping at each other, but competent) moved the film from good to timeless..

@@BareBandSubscription That is correct. Star Beast was written for 10 men, but, when it was changed and modified to be Alien, it's been documented that the roles were gender neutral. From an article last year in Collider:
"At the start of Dan O'Bannon’s script for Alien, there’s a note that few other screenplays contain: “The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women.” It’s a line that fundamentally altered the nature of the film, affecting everything from the presentation of its characters to the way Ridley Scott and his team approached casting, and it was certainly for the best."
It was in the script itself, so anyone who says it wasn't gender neutral doesn't know what they're talking about.

What sets 'Alien' apart from other horror movies is that we can relate to characters. They are just simple workers trying to make a living. All the dialogue, jokes, messing around with co-workers make them so relatable to us. You don't get that feeling with other movies because the characters are just meat to be killed by a monster.

I'm glad you saw this "blind", not really knowing what it was about. in 1979, the trailers for it showed absolutely nothing about it. not who was in it, what specifically it was about. all the trailers showed was an egg with a crack in it, eerie green light spilling of the crack, and the tag line: "In space, no one can hear you scream."
Everyone went to see it on the big screen blind.
and consider: this was all done practical. the only CGI were the graphics seen on the monochromatic computer screens on the ship.

An amazing movie. One of the things that I read about it, and it makes sense (from a certain twisted point of view), is that the writer and director intentionally created much of the visuals with as much disturbing sexual imagery and undertones in mind as possible (the face hugger symbolizing rape, the phallic design of the alien's head, the alien bursting out of the chest to represent birth) because they knew that our subconscious minds see sex as both a great but also potentially disturbing and gross.

Some other films released in the same year were "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", "Mad Max", "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century", "Meteor", "Moonraker" (which sent James Bond into space) and Disney's "The Black Hole".
If you're familiar with these movies, you might notice that (with the exception of "Mad Max", which was an Australian production) they could all be categorized as "space adventures", just like "Star Wars".
So when the people went to see "Alien", that's what they were used to. Heroes, villains and damsels in distress. "The Black Hole" is a good example for this kind of product, it's basically Frankenstein/Dracula in space.

This is why Alien is considered to be the best Horror/Sci-fi ever. Ridley Scott when he directed this film felt that most if not all of the emotional scenes were to be as realistic as possible. Like Blade Runner in the early eighties, Scott got his actors to show as much pain and intense emotional baggage as they could carry. Which is why most of his films are thought of as extremely gritty, visceral, heart pounding experiences one can try to imagine. Although the alien wasn't seen much through out the film its presence is what gave the movie its authentic aura of terror. That what lurks in the darkness isn't always a ghost or spirit, but a highly toxic creature with perfect defenses and ready to kill. Like the tagline reads - 'In space, no one can hear you scream' Veronica Cartwright testified that when she faced the alien in the cargo hold and although there was a human working the costume, she said that she never felt so terrified when the alien stood up staring at her. But that's what Ridley wanted to see in the camera lens. Pure and unbiased terror that a human can express. A fun fact, that if you haven't seen the trailer it's even as terrifying as the movie itself.

Film critic Maitland McDonagh made an interesting point that I still think about to this day when I watch Alien:
"It solves the ultimate problem of the haunted house. 'Why don't these people just get out of the house?' Well, in Alien, there is nowhere to go."

Movie fact: the director actually kept the cast in the dark about the chest burst scene except the one dying obviously. The reaction of the cast is completely genuine and they weren't expecting that at all.

Arianna - your personality is so much fun. I love the lobster or raptor hands to try to keep from touching your makeup. You had me rolling with your reactions. Ripley is one of my all-time movie heroes. Thanks for sharing your reaction. Stay awesome!

The twist in the tail is that at the time, Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) was an unknown actress while everyone else was famous. The normal, expected, trope would be for the least well known actors to die first with the best known just surviving or dying heroically..

The iconic egg chamber lights were borrowed from the legendary rock band, the Who. The band was testing out various lighting effects for their then-upcoming tour on the sound stage next door to the one where Alien was being shot. Jones cat used a German Shepherd dog and placed a darkened screen between the two. The cat couldn’t see the dog and the dog couldn’t see the cat. Then, to get the cat’s reaction for when the alien came down, they pulled the screen out of the way, revealing the cat and the dog to each other. This caused the cat to stop in its tracks and start hissing. Arguably the most pivotal scene in Alien is when the baby xenomorph tears itself through John Hurt’s chest. The scene was shot in just one take, with four cameras set up around Hurt. Ridley Scott's incredibly simplistic direction - is that none of the cast knew what was coming next either. It all started with Scott's desire for genuine reactions of terror. "[They] were going to be the most difficult thing. If an actor is just acting terrified, you can't get the genuine look of raw, animal fear," he mused. Once the creature was rigged up, they stuffed the chest cavity full of clams, oysters, seafood from a butcher's shop and a fishmonger. www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/john-hurt-dead-alien-chestburster-scene-ridley-scott-true-story-a7550656.html

Fun fact: The little run Ash does before going out onto the alien planet has technical significance, as he is a robot powered by artificial substances, he needed to do that to maintain his own functionality.

Her stress induced lobster hands is the most adorable thing I've seen all week.

When you discover Ash is a robot you realise why he ignored her advice as the safety officer or whatever she is and let it on board through quarantine, and why he was adverse to them harming it when it burst out of the other crew member when he screamed "no! don't touch it!" He was protecting it all along. Great movie.

My mates and I left the theatre in '79 and went for a pint and just stood there in shock......what a movie.

I remember seeing this with a pal and his wife. The gal sitting next to me covered her eyes just when Brett was taken by the alien. The gal's husband pulled her hands from her eyes. She laughed and said, "Do that again, and you're walking home!" Everybody who sat around us laughed. Seriously, Ridley Scott knew which buttons to push to maintain suspense and an overall feeling of dread. As a kid, I remember seeing a "B" Sci-Fi movie entitled, "IT! The Terror from Beyond Space." The plotline of "Alien" was based on the aforementioned 1950s flick.

You can't imagine what it was like seeing that breakfast scene in the theatre for the first time. I was 18 at the time and it really shook me.
