This movie is the gold standard for making a very unusual world immediately understandable by making everything look similar to things you already know or just having a character say it in two simple sentences.

While there are a few years between both movies, this must have been really noticeable to people who were used to Sci Fi movies (I know it’s technically Fantasy but…. Space) being quite the opposite because of 2001. I have seen that movie many times and I’m still not sure what the hell is going on for most of the movie.

I don’t want to talk down the cultural importance of starwars but people tend to act, as if there weren’t any high value sci fi productions before it.
2001 came out 9 years before Star Wars and I’d argue it has superior effects and visuals overall. What this did was update the adventure Genres for modern audiences (modern in 1977) and redefining what a Blockbuster is.

    A couple of things:
*This was 1977. Even Disney was **_very_** different, back then, and this was ***_no_* Disney movie.
*Princess Leia was such a strong female lead, they had to insert two male leads (Han and Luke), two male sidekicks (Obiwan and Chewbacca), two male villains (Vader and Tarkin) and two "male-adjacent" droids (C-3PO & R2D2) for comedy relief, just to balance her out.
*You're watching the _Special Edition,_ which was "enhanced" by George Lucas for its re-release in the mid-90's, before the Prequel Trilogy came out...There is still a lot of 'controversy' over the SE, which I'm not going to go into here -- although I did go out of my way to find the original theatrical-release DVD's...Also: _Han. Shot. First._
*Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) was 7'3". Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) was 5'1". Their heights were so different, the original idea for Chewie to get a medal as well just couldn't be made to work on the set, so they just gave medals to Han and Luke.
*Note that it is estimated that virtually every single, little element of the Star Wars universe - characters, stories, tools, weapons, droids, worlds, etc. - have at least a 1,000 word entry on Wookiepedia.
....And this is just the beginning -- it gets seriously mental from here on.....

24:29 I just want to point out the _leadership_ traits Han displayed, in this scene. For _years,_ I didn't _notice_ them.
Leia used a blaster to _open_ the garbage chute, but Han didn't respond to this change in circumstances by pushing everyone _else_ out of the way so he could _escape._ He's a _leader,_ and leaders think primarily of their _team._
As a leader, his priority became making sure no one was left _behind._ That meant bringing up the _rear_ and covering everyone _else's_ escape. The situation was dicey, but _courage_ is a leadership trait, _too._

It took me a few watches to spot little details, like the conversations between pilots cutting from the one speaking to the one listening mid sentence... they didn't need to do that, but Ben Burtt is a wizard who created so many great soundscapes over the years.

It was a quantum leap in visual effects technology, due to its perfection of Motion Control Photography, achieved with a computer-controlled camera crane. A few decades later, here we are with our cellphones, enjoying the computers made available by the boom in technology. Video games, music videos in the early 1980s, and new film editing styles all emerged from the changes ushered in by this film. I love to watch people discover Star Wars for the first time and start to get a glimmer of an understanding of why so many of us became obsessed in our childhoods over this. There was nothing else like in movies OR in TV at the time. Sci-fi back then was cheap and plastic looking, with everyone in spandex and looking more like they belonged in a 70's glam-rock band than anything close to real life. But George Lucas wanted his galaxy to look like people _lived_ in it. The Imperial sets are all quite sterile; metal and glass and other shiny surfaces. But all the Alliance/Rebel locations are based in nature, their bases are made out of natural elements, and Han's ship _looks_ like the kind of vehicle where that character lives most of his life. It's his home, after all.
Glad you liked it, and I can't wait to see your reaction to the next one. Empire Strikes Back has always held the top spot for fans for the best movie, and I think you will love it.

Hi Nia!🙂EXCELLENT reactions for the original Star Wars film!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽The creatures that look like CGI were added to the film years later. Also, the explosions of the planet, Death Star, and other things were enhanced years later too. The theatrical version of the original trilogy was only seen in theaters and on VHS tape. George Lucas chose not to release the original versions after VHS. George Lucas was an independent filmaker when the original trilogy was made. This is many, many, years before Disney acquired his company.

I can’t wait to see you reactions to the later films; especially The Empire Strikes Back.
Something that should be noted here. As stated earlier in the thread, in 1997 this film along with The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were given a Special Edition treatment of enhanced special effects; digital backgrounds and CGI technology were being used here as a test to see what could be done when they were going to make the prequels starting in 1999. For Empire, they didn’t do too much as far as new effect shots, but they did make changes to correct the original John Williams score for the film.

    1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part.
    2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤪
    3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted.
    4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to.
    5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub and the scene with Jabba the Hutt. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977.
    6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over.
    7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford forgot his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked.
    8. Wookies don't take rewards. That's why Chewie doesn't get a metal.
    9. The Disney products suck. The next two are the best of the series. Enjoy!

The attack on the Death Star is iconic and something you never forget. George Lucas lifted the scene from the 1955 movie "The Damn Busters" which is a war film based on the British WW2 Operation Chastise in 1943.
In Operation Chastise, the British dropped a special bomb from an altitude of 60 that would skip along the water over top of the torpedo nets, hit the dam and then sink before detonating. The lower hit increased the water pressure.

Thanks so much for leaving in the initial chase of the huge Imperial cruiser chasing Leia's small ship. When I saw this in the theater on the massive screen, my jaw dislocated and fell to the floor. So many reactors just cut that off in favor of getting right to the "human" action. :)

All your questions can be answered as you continue watching the movies as well as reading some of the novels and comics.. George Lucas signed off on many creations from other writers who added adventures and characters to his Star Wars universe. Sadly though, many of these stories have been retcon-ed officially. Still, there is plenty of 'space' for more heroes, villians and fascinating planets to visit. I hope your journey finds something new. I've been in the Star Wars fandom since I was six years old and have not yet seen everything. Here's a fun fact: We'd have no theater quality sound (THX) on video and DVD if it wasn't for Lucas' company making Star Wars. I should also suggest bookmarking Wookiepedia for descriptions and facts on anything Star Wars related. These days, reacting to Star Wars is a great starting point for new CZcamsrs. Best of luck and MTFBWY!

6:06 that is a post release addition. There is something called the Special Edition which Lucas film added new scenes/effects into the older films. Since then though it's been very difficult to find the original unaltered cuts of the films. Lucas film only sold them once on digital format and all versions you find on stores or online retailers are sadly the Special Edition versions. So you will see scenes/effects that sadly were not part of the original 1977 versions of the films.

James Earl Jones did the voice for Darth Vader while another actor wore the suit. I forgot why Jones refuse credit for his role. If you look up the movie on websites, he's not listed. Obi-wan Kenobi is played by Alec Guiness. He was in another great, long movie called The Bridge on the River Kwai. It's loosely based on a historical story but mostly fictional. It's about POW's forced to buid a bridge by the Japanese in WWII.

"Don't they get a medal?" They got metal, but no medal. :(
Star Wars was truly a cultural phenomenon. Space Sci-fi had always been present, since the early days of visual media, but it was never as huge as it became, after Star Wars. Much of the effects techniques were pioneered, for that film. Now, I will say that the film does look spectacular for its time. HOWEVER, I should mention that there was a time, just before the turn of the century, when the creator took the original film, and made some [mostly] cosmetic updates, using the cutting edge technology of the time.
They made some of the space battle footage look a bit better. You can see the fighters hovering, as they're taking off, instead of close ups on the cockpits. Also, some of the creature footage you were talking about was added/enhanced. The most famous change was a bar scene, where the entire conflict with the lizard guy was changed, with a sloppy edit. Apparently, the creator didn't like the idea of Han taking a preemptive move against Greedo, when it became clear that his life was in danger.
I am glad that you are tackling this series. You are pretty insightful with your guesses, as you are probably aware, since you have already seen the second film. I am glad that you like this. I am also glad that you haven't had that much exposure to the franchise, and have been able to come into the series mostly fresh. Now, I will see what you thought of the next one...

The killing of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru included torture.
The fact that they were incinerated down to skeletons almost certainly indicates that the Stormtroopers used a technique called The Burning.
It was described in another book sanctioned by George Lucas describing the early adventurers of Han and Chewie.
The Burning involved setting a blaster on its lowest power mode and searing the flesh from the victim’s bones a little at a time. It seldom failed to get answers from the victim, if answers were to be had. In this case, Owen and Beru would have had little information to give.
As Han observed on the barbaric practice, those who employed such methods didn’t deserve to live.
    Down with the Empire indeed.

Can you imagine what it was like having to wait three years between each one? That's what we did. George Lucas took awhile to decide to do the prequel movies and show how Obi-Wan's pupil became Darth Vader. Back then, no movie studios would not bill the budget for this classic. So, George Lucas created his own studio, LucasFilm. He also created different aspects of his studio such as Industrial Light and Magic or ILM, special effects company for the special effects on 1977's movie. Then Lucas shopped the movie for distribution. Only 20th Century Fox agreed to distribute the film. Rest is history. Lucas had group of companies until he sold them to Disney in 2012. But Lucas still advised other filmmakers in standalones and sequels, and series.

"Clone Wars" is an animated series that takes place in between episodes 2, "Attack of the Clones" and 3, "Revenge of the Sith" with exception to the later parts of season 7 which takes place at the same time as and just after the events of episode 3...
This series consists of 133 episodes, just under a half hour each, with exception to the "Pilot" special, which is an hour, 40 minute movie in itself. If you want to learn more about Star Wars, then this series will really explain not only the force better, but also develops and fleshes out many characters, good, evil, and everyone in between.
There are many great and memorable episodes, but also quite a few "Filler episodes" as well. Overall, The series gets better and better as it progresses. Just don't start watching "Clone Wars" until you have watched at least episode 2 and episode 3 before watching season 7... But first, watch the rest of this trilogy before starting the prequels...

One of the things that a lot of people forget because of the sheer number of films and Star Wars properties... is that at it's core Star Wars has always been about rebelling against an evil empire (fascism/authoritarianism). The reason for the rebellion and even Luke's heroes journey is the brutal and inhumane behavior of the Empire.
When people say "get politics out of my movies" they are basically ignoring why movies and shows exist... politics are always part of media, the two are intertwined.
