This week we enter the Command Zone to discuss the ins and outs of cutting and trimming your deck. Then we take a look at the very small and very mean Gaddock Teeg. Today we’re joined by good friend Alex Kessler from The Masters of Modern podcast!

Jokulhaups is an Icelandic word meaning "running glacier" for when a volcano erupts under a glacier and causes a flood (because that happens in Iceland). It's pronounced Yer-kootl-how-ps.
thecamodo Thanks! Although I will 100% screw this up the next time I say it.
thecamodo In America it's pronounced, Jock-Ool-Hops, had no idea that was wrong...
nomakym If you google how to pronounce Eyjafjallajokull, you can hear an Icelander say that. Jokull (glacier) is in both words, and haups is said as expected from a germanic language.
Who cares how's that mtg
So one of my rule of thumbs for including a subtheme or a card interaction, is it must interact with at the very least 10 other cards in the deck, otherwise it doesn't go in. There is some give and take, but it is a question I ask myself a lot. I.e. lets say I wanted to put Hakkon into a black white knight deck, i have to have at least 10 different ways to discard him from hand or reliably put him into the graveyard from my library, otherwise he gets cut. Kind of a basic rule I share with a lot of players just getting into the format
You all prolly dont give a shit but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly lost the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Junior Castiel instablaster ;)
@Matteo Gunner thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Matteo Gunner It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass!
@Junior Castiel happy to help =)
I like the discussion on board wipes. Fast rebuilding could also be a stradegy against board wipe.
lol shatterstorm not shadowstorm lol
If you have no limit on the number of any one card in your deck: 60 Chancellor of the Dross for the win.
Hans Melby No maximum deck size. Run 1000 copies of chancellor. Send a message
Original rules called for a 40 card deck, minimum, not 60. Arabian Nights made a stupidly powerful deck out of 40 Rukh Eggs. You would draw your cards and couldn't play anything, so you had to discard a Rukh Egg. As it entered the graveyard, it transformed into a 4/4 flying creature. A few turns later and your opponent was dead. I believe that this card was responsible for the 4 copy rule and the rule that a card has to be sent to the graveyard, instaed of just being discarded there to trigger its effect.
so the deck that can win turn 0 every time (assuming you could run as many of any card you want), can someone explain wtf they were talking about? And how was it not just a deck of 60 Chancellor of the Dross'?
Was hoping this would be more of a loose outline than a general discussion
could we get an update on this deck?
THe first thing I do is check on the prices of the individual cards and cut out those that aren't worth it in my deck. I also often cut expensive staples that don't really synergize with the deck. (e.g. I'd cut Sylvan Library from my deck unless the deck cares about the top card(s)). I also check the mana curve and cut where I see I've got too much from.
Pfffft hahahahha. You cut sylvan library unless you have miracle synergy? You sir are fucking dumb lmao.
This subject is what brought my interest in EDH to an almost complete halt... I was (and still am) tired of not being able to build good decks, so tired that I stopped building decks alltogether. I somehow feel that my decks are always sub-par no matter what I do. =(
Proxy.
Normal Guy Proxying in my group is like mentioning Voldemort. They cringe and reject the subject whenever I bring it up.
I wish you good luck.
Do to what? Budget restrictions, not including the right cards, meta problems?
+700NitroXpress imho, with enough Research, it's not too hard to build solid budget Commander Decks, cards like Frost Titan or Lorthos the Tidemaker are very powerful, Blue has cheap draw like divination, which im even using in my non budget mono U deck, and super cheap ramp like mind stone, everflowing chalice or dreamstone hedron:o
I feel like Jimmy's Mr. Teeg comment was underappreciated.
I put earl of squrill creature and squrill nest spell in my mono green commander deck
Lol there's no coverage at pro tours anymore. But good luck JIMBO! I'll be rooting for ya!
I guess I don't play Animar correctly since it is rare that my creatures are that cheap after turn 5. I also don't play counter spells or counter effects in the deck either.
43:56 FAIL... Supposed to show Shatterstorm, not Shadowstorm, lol.
+GhostCalib3r What a useless card too.
The secret shadowstorm tech
Nice thanks
Shatterstorm not shadowstorm. Good vid
This is a video you could probably revisit
I use single removal in my Lavaz because I don't want to wipe my lazav
I see doomblade as probably the best kill spell in the game
The easiest t0 win is a deck with only Chancellor of the Dross, since you draw 7 in your starting hand and always drain 21 life as you start the game.
thecamodo no. If it can't stand within the rules it doesn't count.
Automaton I can't remember what exactly they talked about with t0 wins in the podcast, but I'm fairly sure I only said this because they also stated something that was illegal.
Basic maths, anyone?
whar card is that art at 6:16 from?
It's called "crusade" It's an enchantment that gives white creatures +1/+1
Bane of the Living's Morph abilities get past Gaddock Teeg because Morph is different from casting when flipping.
Ixidron...dron rhymes with Tron.
Oooh... I thought people were cutting bits off of the cards... Who does that?!
whats the card at 1:02:55
High Market
Flusterstorm ;-)
Hi guys! Lol old vid :)
Competitive decks usualy don't play cards that cost more than 7 mana. The beatiful thing about the vastness of the card pool, is that you don't "need" cards that cost much for those big effects. For example, why run a Jin-Gitaxias, when you could just run Necropotence in your U/B deck? Why run Omniscience, when Rings of Brightheart+Sensei's Divining Top+Basalt Monolith wins much easier. Ramp is basicly there so you don't have to run as many lands, and that you can get to 5-6 mana quicker to win. 30-34 land with 20 to 30 mana rocks makes for an deck that can go off FAST.
B1gLupu You are making some gross oversimplifications here. First off are you talking about French 1v1 or just standard commander? Second, 20-30 mana rocks?! So half your deck is mana rocks and lands? This would fail miserably a lot and is no where near competitive. Saying competitive decks don't play cards with CMC 7+ is no where near accurate. Especially since many decks would just find ways to cheat out said cards. Its funny you mention Jin-Gitaxias because I can easily get him out on T2.
Darrell Sweet T1 actualy, takes only 3 cards and a land. Dark Ritual, Entomb, reanimate spell. I said "usualy don't play" don't get your panties in a twist.
B1gLupu "Usually"* isn't even correct either. Yes I know it can be T1.
If you are saying that 20-30 mana rocks is impossible, the you don't realy know anything about competitive EDH.
B1gLupu Hahahaha! Believe me I know PLENTY. I assure you... I have not seen one french commander deck that uses anywhere NEAR that many mana rocks. 10 rocks is the high end and usually its a maelstrom wanderer deck.
ITS IXIDRON Kappa
60 chancelor of the dross
Tuck effects in 2024: 🙃
2 hour talking about nothing. This could be put in 15 minutes.
